Katherine Heigl deigns to put herself up for an Emmy nomination

One of the first moments most of us had on our multi-year realization that Katherine Heigl is an insufferable diva was a little incident that happened almost two years ago exactly. Dame Heigl released a public statement in June 2008 about how she was withdrawing her name from the Emmy nominations because, in her own words, “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention… In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.” She threw the Grey’s Anatomy writers under the bus, plus she’s so conceited that she insinuated that she would probably win if nominated, and she wanted to deign to give another actress a shot.

After that, a lot of sh-t went down, and Dame Heigl has only reaffirmed (in my mind) her bitchy, holier-than-thou, conceited diva ways. In my opinion, she felt like she was too good to be on Grey’s, and was trying to talk her way into getting fired. It worked, kind of. In the 2009-10 season, Katherine was only in a handful of episodes in the fall, with the idea that she would come back in the spring. She didn’t. But that’s not stopping her from submitting herself for an Emmy!

Though she sat out more than half of the season of Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has submitted herself in the supporting actress category for this year’s Emmy race, her representative confirms. There is no set amount of episodes that an actor must appear in to be eligible for either the supporting or lead actor categories.

Heigl only appeared in a handful of episodes this year before her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, was last seen around Seattle Grace in January. Heigl was due back on the set of the ABC drama March 1 but she never showed up. Heigl told EW that “rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue.” ABC Studios said it was mutually agreed upon that Heigl would end her run this season.

Nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmys will be announced July 8. As for the rest of the Grey’s stars, Ellen Pompeo submitted herself as lead actress, while the other ensemble members — including Patrick Dempsey — will duke it out in the supporting categories. To vie for the best drama prize, Grey’s submitted the two-hour finale, as well as the episodes “The Time Warp,” “Suicide is Painless,” “I Saw What I Saw,” and “Give Peace a Chance” for consideration. NBC will air the Emmys on Aug. 29.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Perhaps I’m unfamiliar with the way Emmy campaigns are run (I’m more familiar with Oscar campaigns, honestly), but it was my understanding that it’s the show runners, producers and network/cable company that does the majority of determinations for Emmy nominations and Emmy campaigns, rather than the individual actors and actresses. Granted, I don’t doubt that an actor can wage a one-person campaign, but it seems like the most effective campaigns are going to be with the explicit blessing of, you know, the show, the producers, the other cast members. A lot of money goes into these campaigns, and I doubt ABC and Grey’s producers want to spend money waging a campaign on behalf of Dame Heigl.

Anyway, I hope whoever does the determining of Emmy nominations (a committee? Emmy pre-voters?) hands Heigl her ass on a platter. Oh, and you know how Dame Heigl left Grey’s because she’s a big movie star because she’s focused on being a mom? Well, the movie star stuff isn’t working out quite as she planned. The Killers, her movie with Ashton Kutcher made a paltry $16 million on opening weekend, coming in third. My guess is that it will have something like a 70% drop in the second week.

I guess the writers work was finally up to her high standards! Sheesh. That’s when I really stopped liking her – not only did she feel the need to slam the writers back then, but took the time to plan out a press release on what to say. She could have simply not said anything and just not submitted herself, but instead chose to make a big stink about it.

I’ve been coming around on her a bit lately, she seems like she’s chilled out and took responsibility for what she’s said in the past, but I think there’s still something unlikable about her.
I thought the producers and such chose for the show, but actors could chose what to submit for themselves? I’m not sure.

B*tch needs to get over herself already!

Agree wholeheartedly with Lisa, I like her during her years on Roswell and was so happy to see her in Greys, I cannot still understand why she had to follow up such good fortune with everything she did. Just baffling. Maybe its her mum as a manager though, my mother bless her heart means well but she can be so bossy, as most mums are, if I said every bit of advice she ever gave me verbatim it would be pretty disastrous.

I hope the TRUE leads actors of grey’s anatomy will win. And she’ll shamefully go into a corner crying her eyes out.

Heigl’s behavior has had the nice side effect of making everyone else on Grey’s look dignified, humble and appreciative. I dare say she’s even made us forget that Isaiah Washington is a phobe. Nice work, chippy. Oh and by the way, what was the look she was going for at the Killers premier – nerdy 13 year old circa 1988? Because I KILLED that look back in the day, lady.

confused. if you have to submit yourself then why do was she nominated before when she didn’t want to be?

My understanding of Emmy nominations is that each individual actor/actress or more likely, their agents/managers, submits them for consideration for a nomination. You are allowed to submit one episode, so even if she had only appeared on one episode of Grey’s this year, she could have submitted that for consideration. The show itself and the directors, writers, etc. would also submit for those categories. Once submitted, the categories are narrowed down to 10 and eventually 5 (sometimes 6) nominees are determined based on a panel’s vote. There is lots more on this at the LA Times site, the Envelop. The Emmy’s notoriously reward veterans, and those with big-name recognition – so it isn’t inconceivable that Heigl could be nominated for her brief stint on Grey’s this year.

As for her actions – completely without class as usual. She might have the right to submit, but I personally think it is in poor taste given her actions over the past couple of years in trying to get out of her contract with the show. I appreciate that she has tried to make efforts of late to own up for her previous ungrateful behavior, but the fact of the matter is that this mea culpa is only in an effort to further her image now that she needs to retain fans if she is going to be able to keep a movie career afloat. Likewise the use of her daughter as her reason for leaving Grey’s when she filmed a movie during her parental leave from the show and is obviously leaving to pursue a movie career, is gross. As is her media campaign to whitewash herself in “mommyhood” to absolve herself with the public. It would be a shame if Heigl were to take away a nomination from someone who is equally as deserving and actually is appreciative of the shows that made it possible for them to have a career.

From the sparse choice she had, I’d love to see the episode she felt was so good it warranted consideration for a nomination.

    I really dislike this one.

I’m not a Heigl apologist by any means, but I think she was screwed either way with this one. If she didn’t submit herself = DIVA HEIGL SPITS ON GREYS WRITERS YET AGAIN, HASN’T LEARNT A THING!! Even if she kept a super low profile there are still mags who would jump at that story. On a shallower note, she should stay the *bleep* away from that hairstyle and colour, her face is ENORMOUS and really scary looking.

  10. skibunny says:

Actually she was one of the reasons I quit watching Grays. Couldnt stand watching her try to act.

  11. picopink says:

I liked her character in 27 Dresses and Greys An. But that was tacky when she announced she withdrew her name from the Emmys due to “lack of material”. I agree that since her movie career is stalling, she is trying to get back into Grey’s good graces, but it just comes off as extremely tacky esp since she was in so few episodes. Also, she needs to: 1. go back to blonde 2. get some proactive 3. stop wearing her hair scraped back. She looked pretty in the recent mag spread.

  12. Carrie says:

    Two things:
First, a good breakdown of her career and antics, and how her costars feel about her: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/06/katherine_heigl_career.html?f=most-commented-vulture-7d5

Second, she was on some talk show after the whole Emmy withdrawal had happened, and the host said something like “How would you have felt if the writers sent out a press release saying that they withdrew their names from Emmy consideration because Katherine Heigl’s acting wasn’t up to par and didn’t show off their work well?” and she sat there flummoxed until finally saying she would feel really badly.
Anyway, it felt at the time like she might have had a little “AHA!” moment, but her actions since then seem to indicate that she has not.
Rom-Com queens need two things: to be pretty, but not too pretty, and to be really, really likable. She’s going to find that all of her unpleasantness is going to bite her in the ass!

  13. Jeri says:

I don’t think (hope) she could possibly win. Her EGO has no bounds.
