True Blood renewed for a fourth season (spoilers for past episodes)

trueblood_ericsookie
There’s good news for True Blood fans. HBO has announced that the popular supernatural series will return next year for a fourth season with a full 12 episodes. This comes after news that the premiere last week was up in viewership 38% from last year’s opener.

Spoilers for last episode of True Blood, mild future spoilers below
True Blood was back in fine form Sunday with a more even pace, better plotlines and the introduction of several new characters. My favorite was Tara’s new love interest, vampire Franklin Mott, who helped her kick a couple of rednecks’ asses outside Merlotte’s. Mott is played by underrated British actor James Frain, who I distinctly remember from the cheesy 2000 film Where the Heart Is with Natalie Portman. He’s had solid work in television ever since and I hope this role will help raise his profile. As much as I dislike Tara’s self-pitying storyline, it could get very interesting now that she’s hooked up with Mott. The scene where they met was genius. When Franklin asked Tara if she was a waitress, they had this pithy exchange. “I’m a bartender and I ain’t working tonight.”
Then what are you doing here?” he asked.
Honestly, I’m trying not to kill myself.”
How’s that going for you?”
Well, I’m still alive.”
Makes one of us.”

Also in this episode, Sookie’s brother Jason helped Andy bust a meth ring in Hotshot, where he got a glimpse of a beautiful blonde lit up through a clearing. Spoilers for future episodes here. In the book series this is Crystal, Jason’s new love interest and a member of a mysterious shapeshifting community.

We met Lafayette’s mom, Ruby Jean, played by Alfre Woodard. Ruby is in a psychiatric assisted living facility and has lost her mind. Lafayette revealed his motivation for selling drugs while taking Tara to visit Ruby as a kind of warning after her suicide attempt. “You know how much it costs to keep her here? More than two legal jobs worth, that’s how much.” Ruby was being attended to by an attractive male nurse, Jesus, who had a mild flirtation with Lafayette.

Some of my favorite lines in this week’s episode came from Jason, who marveled when Sookie told him about the existence of werewolves. “There’s werewolves? Bigfoot is he real too? Santa?” Jason also had some humorous moments with Andy, who was telling him to put his nose to the grindstone. “You’re a good guy, Stackhouse. You’ve got a lot of heart. You’re prettier than most girls. If you just applied yourself right you could accomplish almost anything.

There was an incredible scene between Jessica and Hoyt in which she tried to push him away primarily because she was afraid he’d see the dead guy she had stowed under the house. Hoyt tried to convince her they could make it work but she closed the door in his face. They ended up crying on either side of the door, each pining for the other.

Sookie and Eric had a flirtation as Eric arrived to protect her from the werewolves. Eric pleaded his case. “You’re going to invite me in, so I can protect you. Or have passionate primal sex with you.”
You’re not going to distract me by talking nasty.”
I already have.”

Eric confided in Sookie by revealing an experience during World War II in which he’d encountered a werewolf that was made by a vampire and powered by vampire blood. The vamp-army weres were fighting on the side of the Nazis, but predated that time by centuries. This is a conspiracy plotline introduced by creator Alan Ball that doesn’t follow the books, much like the “V” drug dealing plot. It’s hard to tell where he’s going with it.

Bill was held hostage in the fabulous mansion of the king of Mississippi in a plotline that also varies from the book series. In the book Club Dead, Bill was kidnapped by his maker, Lorena, and then taken to an outbuilding near the mansion. On the show, he was captured by werewolves who were (allegedly) disobeying orders from the king by feeding from him. At the end of Club Dead, Sookie saves Bill from Lorena by killing her. The outcome is probably the same as Bill threw a lantern on Lorena in the closing scene when she showed up unexpectedly during dinner. We see Lorena screaming as flames engulf her, although the episode ends without revealing her fate.

Which were your favorite moments this week? I feel like I left out so much, particularly Sam’s reunion with his birth family and rivalry with his brother. There’s also the issue of the King of Mississippi’s motivations for kidnapping Bill and offering him a sheriff’s position. It doesn’t add up for me that he would kidnap Bill to get to the Queen of Louisiana, but that’s probably because I’m still focused on how this played out in the books.

  1. Kaboom says:

The scenes where the guys speak German were hard on the ears, they could have used some vocal coaching. The werewolf girl however was a native.

  2. Sara says:

The first few episodes are SUPER cheesy with some bad acting but it gets better in the middle of the first season and the second season is fantastic.

I love this show. The dialog is so witty and always makes me laugh. Plus everyone is sexy. It’s very entertaining and I can’t think of another show that takes place in South.

  3. Sara says:

Ha, whatever, you try speaking German and see how well you do.

I doubt you can’t tell from tv if someone is a native speaker.

  4. snowball says:

I have no idea if this is spoiler info or not, so I’m adding spoiler space anyway.

Stephen Moyer was on Chelsea Lately last week (?) and he said the entire cast signed 7 year contracts. I suppose it’s up to HBO to renew or not, but they’re chained up for 7 years; now I guess HBO decides if it’s worth it and Charlaine Harris keeps on churning out material. I’ve never watched a full episode, just the last half hour of the last season’s finale.

Honestly, I have all of the books sitting on my shelf staring at me and I only read the first one right when it came out and haven’t touched any of them since, although I keep buying them when they are released (I have no idea why, other than my OCD and a vague memory that I liked the first one so I should really read the rest). So I don’t have a clue what’s happening, other than now, when I read them, I’ll have gap-toothed Anna Paquin in my head when I read about Sookie.

  5. Siren6 says:

Heck, I’d happily sign up to watch 2 hours of Alexander Skarsgård do pirouettes and high kicks while mangling German, or Swedish, or any other Indo-European Germanic language he wants to speak in. Count me in!

  6. autotron says:

Are you seriously insinuating that we shouldn’t expect quality accents because THAT SHIT IS HARD, Y’ALL. Why not just hire some actors from the south, then? I caught a glimpse of another episode, unfortunately, not long ago – it was no less cheesy. Also, vampires and anything related are inherently cheesy.

  7. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

My father is German and Alex’s German sounded fine to me.

  8. KittySchmitty says:

Oh, how I am so excited. I didn’t get to see the whole episode last night, I was packing for VACAY!!!

I can’t wait to see how this plays out. AND, I love love how Ball is keeping the book readers in suspence, with the new plot lines. Frankly Charlaine Harris was way out-dated with some of her story lines… 😛

  9. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Tara isn’t self pitying. Its obvious she has a hard life and that her family is plagued. Tara is struggling with all she has went through and she is trying to find her way through the world. I get super irritated when I hear people downplay Tara’s struggles with life, like there nothing, why does that one line from A Time to Kill always go through my head when I argue the fact Tara has a hard life and its understandable she is a little screwed up.

Anywho, I am looking forward to the expansion of her story line and it looks like in the next episode Tara and her new love interest grow much closer. Yay and that guy is super hot. Love him in movies, his British accent is sooo cute.

  10. Dorothy says:

CB, I am guessing that when Bill threw a lantern on Lorena it was a fantasy. Only because Bill has to go through all the bad stuff with her (I won’t spoil it by saying) in order for Sookie save Bill and then be betrayed by him and then the stuff that happens in the trunk of the car -for her to break up with him.

One of my favorite line was when Sookie said she kept waiting for Bill to walk in the bar and say “Sookie” She said it just like he does – lol

LOVE the show, but I have to say the books are still better.

  11. padiddle says:

I died laughing when Terry was telling Arlene the story about the Armadillo he rescued! Hahahah!

(SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED EP. 2)

This episode was so much better than the premiere. Can’t wait to see what happens with Franklin and the dead body that Jessica “lost” lol

  12. RHONYC says:

    yo!

when bill lit lorena’s ass on fire, that was…well…

    fi-yah!!!

so fuggin awesome. that b%tch had it comin’ in spades.

i love this new season so much.

i am just afraid to find out why bill had an ‘entire-fu%#ing-FILE’ on sookie dated back to like kindergarten in a hidden panel under his drawer. creepy.

    duh-duh-DUH!!!

    stay tuned.

favorite line: talbot – “johnny, bring in the thai boy…”

favorite dish: the blood gelato. lol 🙂

  13. lena says:

    favorite parts

when bill makes fun of “cooter”..

when sookie was making fun of the way bill says her name

when franklin helps tara beat up the red necks and gets turn on by her kicking some a** …sidenote…he’s sexy but not sexy…if that makes any sense lol

  14. SolitaryAngel says:

@ Sara: Another show filmed in the South is Justified starring Timothy Olyphant….man do I LOVE that guy! The show is good, too. 😀

  15. tooey says:

The books are great and the show diverges enough from the books that you don’t feel like you’ve seen it already and can predict every outcome. Also Alan Ball has added characters or expanded on characters, so that keeps it interesting as well.

I had two favorite scenes: the first being the German flashback. I know it’s wrong but Eric in that uniform and speaking German looked and sounded very fine to me. And of course, the second was his offer of primal sex. Whew! Had to fan myself…

  16. Kolby says:

Does anyone else have the feeling that Alan Ball is trying to jam way too much into this season? I mean, seriously, the folks from Hotshot? We’ve already met so many new people already – I don’t need the Hotshot shifters when I’ve got King Russell, the STUPID STUPID V storyline, the Jason and Andy Comedy Hour, Jessica and Hoyt’s troubles, Sam’s roadtrip to WT heaven, and Tara’s boring ass. No time for more shifters – save it for Season Four.

  17. Kolby says:

And we haven’t even met Alcide and Debbie Pelt yet!!!

  18. lucy2 says:

I’m really enjoying this season so far. I read the books after last season ended, so I’m sort of anticipating what’s happening, but the show usually twists in a different direction, and adds a lot more than the books, especially with the supporting characters.
Lafayette has been my fave from day 1, and I love that it looks like he’ll have good story lines this season.
The Eric/Sookie stuff is so much better than the Bill/Sookie!

  19. Tia C says:

    @ lucy2: What you said! I couldn’t agree more.

I haven’t read all the books yet, but I’m enjoying working my way through them. Not surprised the show got renewed again! Alan Ball and Raelle Tucker are taking the best of Charlaine Harris’ ideas and enriching them in True Blood. The books can be a little hokey at times, and they put a modern spin on them and spice them up. I think the best decision they made was to keep Lafayette. He’s always been my favorite, and IMO the most entertaining character. Also, Eric has grown on me, although I don’t have the Eric-lust that some other fans have. I wonder what they will do with the Franklin Mott storyline. In the books he is not nice to Tara. Can’t wait to see more!

  20. Iggles says:

I love Eric, but I think they’re being to heavy handed with the love triangle! Emo Eric is annoying. Why does he have to be mopey and “vulnerable” for Sookie to like him??? I just don’t buy Eric showing up on Sookie’s porch to confess his weary soul to her! Felt too forced.

I not a big fan of Bill and Suckie but they way they developed felt more natural than suddenly Emo Eric.

They did the same thing with Damon and Elena on Vampire Diaries. Ruining a kickass character but making him suddenly “weepy” and “emo” around the girl they want to pair him with. Ugh. Lazy writing.

Edited to say: LOL @ my typo for Sookie’s name!

  21. Persistent Cat says:

Eric looked so hot in that episode. Damn. Stupid question but if his character is Nordic, shouldn’t it be Erik?

Regardless, even if his German accent wasn’t good, his character isn’t German. I speak French but my accent sucks.

@Kolby, I’m with you. There are too many plotlines and way too many characters. They gotta tone it down a bit. Big Love did that tooan it’s annoying.

I too find Tara extremely annoying. The second season took place in the span of what? A week? Two? Not worth killing yourself over some guy you barely know. Bu her scenes include Lafayette so it’s all good.

Oh Jason, you beautiful, stupid piece of delicious looking man meat.

And yeah, Terry talking about the armandillo made me love him.

  22. Beth says:

I guarantee that Eric’s German was perfect, since he’s a native Swede, and the two languages are incredibly similar.

Sunday’s episode was so funny. Loved Talbot, Jason, Terry and “Sookeh.” HAHAHA.

I agree they’re cramming a lot into each episode, but I don’t mind. I love it! (Except Tara. She annoys me.)

If you’ve read the books, you’ll know why Bill had all that history on Sookie, but I won’t spoil it for you here.

And that shirt Eric was wearing in the last scene? Totally could have been from the Gap! HAHAHA. Good observation.

    I love this show.

  23. Persistent Cat says:

Forgot to mention, the dinner scene was beyond fromage. Like bad high school theatre.

And not to be a pain but the subject for the post is spoilers for the past “episodes.” Maybe you can make a separate post for book spoilers for those of us that don’t read them? I haven’t read them and doubt I will since I’m watching the show (and my brain is confused enough with the plethora of characters and plotlines).

Oh, and to all commentors and writers, if you want to start each statement off with, “hooker,” that’d be totally cool with me.

  24. lucy2 says:

“I too find Tara extremely annoying. The second season took place in the span of what? A week? Two? Not worth killing yourself over some guy you barely know.”

I was feeling that way too, P.Cat, but then after this episode I kind of got it. There is some serious wackiness in their family, and for someone already standing on the edge of the cliff, it’s easier to jump off. She doesn’t see things the way most other people do, it’s all extremes.
I like how Lafayette is determined to save her from all that, but I do hope they tone it down for her at some point. I really like the actress, but the character can be grating.

  25. kp says:

Sara- Friday night lights is also filmed/based in the south

  26. rundee says:

Just to get it out of the way: Eric spoke german with a strong, very swedish accent. And as I´m german who speaks swedish I might add that the languages differ a lot in the pronunciation. But his german was better then any german in other american movies I´ve ever heard. But who gives a fuck anyway: He didn´t play a german but a swede, so he has to sound swedish!

Anyhoodle, I´ve totally fallen for Eric Northman, the vampire-viking, so much I prefer watching it alone in case I´m drooling.

So even if Lafayette is great and his lines are really kick-ass “Hooker is you feelin me? *fingersnap* We clear? We got it?”

And Taras mom is also a extremly well-played, believable and thought-out character that -for me- presents everything that´s wrong with modern american christianity

And Terry is so sweet “I have a diploma. In anger management. Where I learned talking about your feelings is a manly thing to do”

So even if everything´s really really sweet,
I´m still totally hooked on Eric and Sookie having sex:
“Mr.Northman, will you please come in”

  27. bellaluna says:

I loved Terry making a list of why he could be trusted w/ Arlene’s(?) kids and reading it to her as she threw up in the bathroom – priceless! Terry is such a sweet character and I just adore him. I really hope it works out for those two.

I also loved Lafayette’s speech to Tara about how they’d been fighting their mothers’ insanity ALL their lives, and he wasn’t going to let her succumb. And if she did, he’s making sure the guy “spooning you peas isn’t HALF as cute as Jesus there. You feel me?”

  28. rundee says:

Oh and btw I don´t find Tara´s annoying! Eggs was really really hot, I´d cry over him!

  29. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Rundee thank you for not finding Tara annoying. I can’t believe some people some time. She may not have known Eggs a along time but it was clear they were in love. I just don’t see how people can find a girl with all her life problems annoying, its really insensitive. Eggs dying was just one more bad thing that happened to her that made her wanna end it all. Its not like he was the sole reason.

  30. bellaluna says:

@ RHONYC – The werewolf wasn’t at Bill’s house, he was at Sookie’s. The family history was Gran’s. That’s why Erik strongly encouraged Sookie to invite him in – the king of Mississippi is willing to use any family members still amongst the living to “encourage” Bill’s cooperation. 🙂

  31. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

Favorite line from this season, so far:

Sookie:” Pam, I am not in the mood for any of your lesbian weirdness tonight”

  32. Twez says:

I’d much rather see Sam naked in someone’s bed than dealing with his long-lost white trash family. I’m already bored.

  33. rundee says:

oh for anyone forgetting why tara´s crying for eggs:

    http://www.afterelton.com/sites/www.afterelton.com/files/tb301img6.jpg

  34. Erin says:

I also agree that the Lorena-lantern thing is fantasy…don’t think her character would go that quickly in the films.

Love the line about Eric and the sex – that was hot!!

VERY excited it got renewed for another season 😀

  35. Roslyn says:

bellaluna, I do believe the file was in Bill’s house, I know Sookie’s house is torn up but it looked like Bill’s house to me. And it wasn’t a werewolf who discovered it. In the next scene, after introducing Mott, they pan down to show he’s wearing the same boots as the snooper.

  36. RHONYC says:

    @ bellaluna

    ___________________________

i’m gonna check it out again on ‘ondemand’ tonight, but i think me & roslyn’s right.

that file on sookie was definitely under a hidden panel beneath the drawer.

gran kept sookie’s pics all over the house. i don’t think it was gran’s house, but bill’s.

i believe he (that brunette new vampire that’s gonna hookup with tara) was going through bill’s house and then he (off camera) took that body jessica was hiding.

    anyway, i’ll watch it again…thanx. 🙂

  37. RHONYC says:

    @ rundee

    —————————-

    nuh-uh!

not if he’s gonna chop down sookie like he was wearin out that stripper in his dungeon. he was like robof%ck.

    no thank you.

sookie’s too soft & pink for that kinda rough stuff.
