The Green Hornet trailer – can we buy Seth Rogen as an action star?

Below is the new trailer for The Green Hornet, which isn’t coming out until January 2011. Entertainment Weekly likes it, but Gawker hates it. Well, Gawker thinks “We have seen this movie so many times before.” Sure, it’s formulaic. It’s an action-comedy based on a comic book! Of course it’s formulaic. But I have a bigger question – will people go see a comic book action-comedy starring Seth Rogen, who looks like he barely does anything action-y?

The Asian man (character Kato/actor Jay Chou) bothers me. Not because he looks bad or anything, just the stereotype that I already see forming is bothering me. Is that character true to the comic book? Does the source material have a sullen, resourceful, technically brilliant martial arts expert Asian as the straight man/sidekick? Eh. And Seth Rogen doesn’t appear to be doing the same formulaic shtick as other action stars – he seems to be parodying his own one-note slacker character. Oh, and Seth’s father is a media mogul? That’s bad luck, because the days of media moguls are over, unless you give the 80-something dude an Australian accent and a hot Chinese wife (coughRupertMurdochcough).

But if Christoph Waltz and Tom Wilkinson are in it, that does give me hope that this might actually be a decent film. Although the fact that Cameron Diaz is grossly miscast as the love interest/His Girl Friday does not give me hope.

Cameron Diaz and Seth Rogen join forces to film the Green Hornet in Los Angeles, on September 5, 2009. Diaz professionally sticks by her co-stars side to watch the last takes under the shade of a production tent. Seth Rogen on the other hand kicks back, loosens his tie and grabs a Diet Coke to maintain his new trimmer physique. Fame Pictures, Inc

I don’t think that I will pay money for this Seth Rogan is not an action hero, and although he is a very funny guy he doesn’t have the charisma it takes to pull off a superhero movie

  2. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL It looks really funny. I think Seth can do it. Maybe it won’t be Christan Bale Batman series action hero but more Iron Man because I didn’t see RDJ playing a super hero and so did a lot of people and look how awesome it turned out.

Also according to Google an Asian person was usually the Kato character. I am not sure why it bother you but he is cute and was very funny in the trailer. “I will go with you, but I don’t want to touch you.” LMAO

  3. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

I love Seth. I cannot get enough of Pineapple Express. I am sure he can pull this off.

Michael Keaton was not supposed to be good as Batman, I think he was the BEST Batman.

  4. Deniz says:

I would like to know what was behind hiring Seth Rogan to play the Green Hornet. Was the director going for a parody? The movie seems to confuse me. I’m not sure if I’m suppose to take it seriously (like The Dark Knight) or be amused (like Batman Forever)??

  5. Iggles says:

Just watched trailer. A few thoughts..

1- Why is this in 3D??

2- Kaiser, I share your concern about Kato

3- Seth Rogen isn’t a convincing playboy, let alone a HERO

4- Seth Rogen needs to get his teeth fixed. They were a bit distracting for a billionaire playboy

5- No way am I inclined to watch this crapfest

  6. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Deniz think of it as Action/Comedy. It looks its gonna be like how Iron Man has action but there is a good mix of comedy in it as well. Its nothing like the Batman series.

  7. Anna says:

I really wanted to see this and I wanted it to be good for Seth. But… the trailer does not make the film appealing to me at all. I don’t see a Hornet film as something that is essentially a Seth Rogen comedy with some super guns. I also thought Seth was so good and so funny in all he did before. Now I question whether he has anything but his type of funny in his repertoire. Plus, it’s never a good sign when the sidekick is way cooler and has nearly as much screentime as the main character. I predict a fail, unfortunately.

  8. meme says:

that would be one gigantic NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. yuk

  9. di butler says:

Reading the post and comments leads me to believe that you guys never read the Green Hornet comic books. It seems pretty true, to me.

  10. lucy2 says:

I don’t really care for him, his voice bugs me. I’m thinking the same thing Deniz – serious or parody? If it’s serious, I can’t see him in that role.

Cam is almost 40 – trying to decide if I feel bad for her for STILL being regulated to the “girl” role in a comic book movie, or if I’m glad the studio didn’t hire some lame 20 year old to prance around in tight clothes. I’ll be optimistic and go with the latter, I guess.

  11. a says:

    what about pineapple express?

    seth? i’d see it…
but diaz is a big no for me.

  12. Emma says:

The Green Hornet = The Poor Man’s Iron Man?

  13. jen says:

    Stink-O-Rama.

  14. Bunny says:

Wow, this looks kind of lame. Seth makes the same faces in every roll he’s in.

  15. Obvious says:

Why is Cam the girl? I mean I understand that their breaking the type casting roles by putting an older (i am in no way implying she is old or anything) woman with a younger man, whom as a rich play boy could conceivably be with 5 20 somethings. it makes no sense to me.

Not to mention that in recent years she bugs the crap out of me.

  16. RhymesWithSilver says:

    Cameron Diaz?!

  17. Novaraen says:

The worst casting ever. Probably won’t see it…even when it’s out on video.

  18. Allen says:

Is Seth Rogan the new Jack Black?

All of a sudden he’s everywhere.

I don’t know what people in Hollywood are smoking but this is was the worst casting choice ever.

  19. scotchy says:

    agreed, this looks bad.
very bad, and not all that funny. ouch.

it’s in 3D because that way they can charge more money and come on who doesn’t like 3D explosions?

  20. Captaine says:

Seth? Oh rly? Fuck outta here.

  21. Toe says:

Before seeing the trailer: What the Hell? Seth Rogen? the fat funny guy?? Uuhhhh NO

After seeing the trailer: Hell Yeah!! I’m going to watch it. (not in 3D)
Like others said, the movie is not dark like Batman, it’s like Iron/Spider man.

  22. irishserra says:

    I don’t buy it…

  23. Anna says:

I won’t buy Seth Rogan period.

  24. Geebers says:

RDJ is an actor. Seth Rogan has a schtik.

  25. CB Rawks says:

The Greatest American Hero was kind of nerdy and unlikely. Is that what they’re going for here too?

  26. Jag says:

Seth Rogan as a hero? Nope, can’t make me watch it. Cameran Diaz as the love interest? Even worse. At least it wasn’t Goopy or “I’m too beautiful to get a part,” but it’s still a “no.”

  27. ViktoryGin says:

For some reason, I’m am inexplicably attracted to Seth Rogen. I have been since 40 Year-Old virgin. Don’t know why? He said himself in the movie “I’m ugly as fuck by conventional standards”.

With that said I agree with your reservations about whether or not he can carry a lead like this. Though he is generally interesting to which Seth Rogen has this kind of “character actor who got mistakenly cast as the lead” feel about him. We’ll see.

The Kato character. Of course. Asians are the most stereotyped, type-casted
ethnic group in Hollywood. Lucky that the casting director can absolve himself of poor judgment by pointing detractors toward the original comic.

And Cameron Diaz is just too abysmal to warrant comment.

  28. NayNay says:

I believe that this dude can pull it off. He is funny as hell, so yes, he can definitely do it!

  29. Milan says:

erm, no…he’s got dorky narrow shoulders. As for RDJ, no one thought he could pull off iron man….but er when he came out ripped as f*ck, with a 12 pack, and an epic bitch face that said…’WHAT!’ i think people took him seriously after thatand they all generally STFU.

  30. buckley says:

I’m tired of this actors playing the same roles over and over.
I’m looking at you Seth, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Jesse Eisenberg, and in my opinion (don’t hate) Angie Jolie

  31. Jenny says:

Its like rush hour but the guy isnt jackie, and the guys not black. 😀
