Leonardo DiCaprio does some old-school shirtless pics for Rolling Stone

leo2

Over the past few years, I’ve really grown to like Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s not one of my imaginary lovers, like Clive Owen or Gerard Butler, but I respect Leo as an actor, and I like who he is as a celebrity. He’s interesting most of the time, but he keeps most of his stuff on the down-low, which is good too. He’s been doing totally solid work too – he was a very solid lead in Inception, although… here’s the thing: I buy Leo as the lead in a thriller, a straight drama, even an action film. But even though his most famous performance was as a romantic lead (in Titanic), I just don’t buy it. He rarely has chemistry with his leading ladies, and I’m not buying it. Anyway, Leo is the cover boy for the new issue of Rolling Stone. The cover shot (below) is nice and brooding, but it’s still good to know that Leo can pull out the old-school Teen Beat shirtless-on-a-bed pose to sell himself (above).

In the box office smash Inception , Leonardo DiCaprio spends most of his time inside people’s dreams. But what’s going inside DiCaprio’s head in real life? In the new issue of Rolling Stone, on sale at newsstands today, associate editor Brian Hiatt finds out. “[My stomach churns over] really stupid stuff,” DiCaprio reveals. “Things that shouldn’t make you anxious whatsoever. It’s crazy how your mind will become this database to make you worry about things that are so arbitrary. I have a well-organized life, and I’ve put a lot of thought into the things that I do, and then, you know, my stomach will be…I’ll just be sitting there, totally anxious about something ridiculous.”

In one of the most intimate portraits yet of the intensely private actor, DiCaprio relaxes enough to smoke a few cigars, have some beers, sing the Cheers theme song (badly) and open up on everything from his wild youth as Hollywood’s hottest heartthrob to a recent brush with death:

On growing up:
“I was essentially a dwarf with the biggest mouth in the world. I would talk back to anyone and be up for any fight, and when you tell a kid that’s three years older than you to shove it, you’re going to get your ass beat…I was a real punk, there’s no question about it.”

On partying in the pre-TMZ age:
“I got to be wild and nuts, and I didn’t suffer as much as people do now, where they have to play it so safe that they ruin their credibility. I didn’t care what anyone thought…. It was also about avoiding the tornado of chaos, of potential downfall. It was, ‘Wow, how lucky are we to not have hung out with that crowd or done those things?’ My two main competitors in the beginning, the blond-haired kids I went to audition with, one hung himself and the other died of a heroin overdose… . I was never into drugs at all. There aren’t stories of me in a pool of my own vomit in a hotel room on the Hollywood Strip.”

On dating:
“I had better success meeting girls before Titanic. My interactions with them didn’t have all the stigma behind it, not to mention there wasn’t a perception of her talking to me for only one reason.”

On dealing with his Titanic fame:
“It was like there was a separate entity out there,” he says. “Not to use a James Cameron reference, but it was like being in a little bit of an avatar.” He cringes. “That’s going to sound extremely self- indulgent. It’s going to sound like, ‘Oh, I was a frickin’ avatar,’ give me a break, I’m already vomiting.”

[From Rolling Stone]

Oh, yes, Leo has such a tough life, what with all of the supermodels and the huge paychecks and everything. Woe is Leo. No, he doesn’t seem that self-pitying, but it’s there, a little bit. Mostly, I just think Leo spends way too much time thinking about all of the negativity Titanic brought into his life, rather than all of the opportunities it gave him. Eh. When will Leo ever answer my questions about his dirt-lip?

Would it kill this dude to do a comedy or romance film once in a while? His brooding, SeriousActor schtick is getting old. We all know how much you want an Oscar, Leo.

  2. fugly says:

can’t find this dude hot. not ugly at all-just not hot.

  3. nnn says:

I don’t like him shirtless. He does not have the body to pull it off, the physical magnetic presence to do that.

He looks more like the intellectual type who should be fully dressed in pictures.

Great actor though, through and through.

  4. Jeri says:

I like him & think he comes across as honest. I’ve never heard of him bad mouthing others publicly. A gentleman for our times.

  5. kelbear says:

I feel awkward looking at him shirtless for some reason.

  6. Bite me says:

Can’t recall the last Leo film that I viewed, I don’t think he is aging well and he needs to spend more time at the gym

  7. Zoe says:

I don’t know why an entertainer can’t be allowed to be honest about their personal experience and admit that growing up in that world is difficult without people crucifying them for it. It’s a HUGE miscalculation to think that people who are famous or have money are problem-free or have these charmed lives the rest of us can only dream of and that it entitles them to shut up and suck it up because they are ‘lucky’. This guy worked hard his whole life and sacrificed his childhood to work in the industry and grew up in a very tough place with little boundaries. That he survived at all is a miracle, that he continues to work is a gift. I lived in LA for years and worked in the entertainment industry long enough to know that the idea that fame and money solve your problems are B.S. Entertainers grow up in a world of access and excess and they pay immense prices for it. Their lives are no better than ours, people need to let go of the delusion and accept that these people are far from perfect and deserve a complaint every now and then as much as anyone else. I’m proud of Leo for surviving and for continuing his commitment to his craft without destroying himself. Far worse things in the world people could be focusing on here.

  8. Emma says:

Any thoughts on the two competitors he briefly mentioned in his interview?

My first thoughts were of Jonathan Brandis (who committed suicide by hanging) and Brad Renfro (died of heroin overdose).

  9. dj says:

I just mentioned the other day how I thought Leo was THE most interesting actor in Hollywood today. He and his projects seem intensely well-thought out and his commitment seems huge. He is one of the few who doesn’t seem to be re-hashing the SAME damn movie plots over and over in his career (Titanic 2, 3, etc.) Each is creatively different and working and bringing in new ideas to Scorcese (who doesn’t just work with anyone, except DeNiro). I respect him and his work. How refreshing!

  10. tooey says:

@Zoe, I agree. I would never, ever want to be famous and have all that scrutiny and chaos swirling around me. But the money they make is the trade-off, I guess and I hope most of them get that – nothing is free in the end. The ones that are famewhores (the Lohans, for instance) who DO nothing except parade around for the paps and then complain about the “invasion” – they are the ones that piss me off. The Leonardo DiCaprios of the world at least contribute something and he doesn’t strike me as one that lives his life for the paps…

  11. Schozzle says:

@Emma, I definitely think one might be Brad Renfro. I also think it was extremely tacky for him to even mention it like that.

“doesn’t seem to be re-hashing the SAME damn movie plots over and over in his career”

Uh, as someone just mentioned on ONTD, all his last few movies have been basically the same. “My wife is crazy and my life sucks because of it woe is me boo hoo”

  12. Lori says:

Love him. He is going to get an oscar eventually. Maybe not for Inception, but it is coming. He really can do no wrong in my eyes.

  13. elusive says:

one is definatly River Pheonix…the other I’m not sure

  14. meme says:

Classic old-school actor. Leo always makes interesting film choices and works with the best directors. AND he doesn’t whore himself out whenever he has a film opening and he keeps his private life private. I respect that. BTW the competitors are Brandis and River Phoenix.

  15. Lori says:

Pretty sure, he was talking about River Phoenix as well as Brad Renfro.

  16. Mari says:

@Lori- yep, River and Brad definitely.

Call me crazy, but I like him a little plumper like this…maybe because the concave chest look gone.

  17. passer by says:

I am so in love with him

  18. blaugaro says:

Schozzle, yes, it’s totally tasteless to mention the deads of brad and river, specially in these terms, like “yes, they messed up: their bad, my luck”. What an idiot.

  19. Lulu says:

I am not a fan of his but he’s a great actor. I love Catch Me if You Can and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
He was amazing as Howard Hughes too.

Okay maybe I’m a teeny tiny fan but that being said–

The top photo got my attention!

  20. Riley says:

@ Emma= Definately Jonathan Brandis. Brad Renfro good possibility. River Phoenix no way.

  21. Sashi says:

I love him through and through, I mean I don’t know him of course but all his movies, his interviews, the way he handles everything, I hope he gets an Oscar soon

  22. Audra says:

I go back and forth with Leo. Like him, then he bugs, then I like him again. He is one friggin’ gorgeous, interesting looking man. Kelbear – I think you feel uncomfortable looking at him shirtless (cuz I do too) b’cuz he kinda looks like my little brother. I hope he continues to do good work – I thought Stutter Island was awesome. Still though, my fav is Arnie in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. “Gilbert….Gilbert!”

  23. Schozzle says:

@Mari, exactly. That grosses me out. “I’m so lucky I didn’t kill myself.”

    STFU.

  24. JJ says:

I also thought of river phoenix at first but then i remembered leo saying once that he admired river and that THE FIRST TIME that he saw him, he was about to go up to him and say how cool he thought river was and then in that moment river fell on the ground,(and then eventually died) this was in a club.

So it couldn’t be river cause leo said he used to go to the auditions with this blonde kids.

  25. Shi-gatsu says:

    Niiiiiiiiiiice! 🙂

  26. Dejasade says:

Love him. You’re right – he’s not sexy like Gerard or Jake Gylenhaal, but he is an amazing actor, so that alone makes him SEXY.
He seems down to earth too.

  27. Miss Thang says:

Holy crap! We saw Inception over the weekend and I was thinking how I haven’t been this attracted to him since his days on Growing Pains!!

  28. bellaluna says:

I’ve never gotten all the fuss over him. Yes, he’s been good in most of his roles. Yes, for the most part I like his choice of characters/movies. Is he hot? No.

Someone who is secure in their own being (career, personality, life) does not use others (especially others who’ve made mistakes and/or are DEAD) as a ruler for his own success.

  29. Jeri says:

I don’t think he’s tacky. He was just pointing out it’s not so “easy” as everyone thinks to survive and succeed in the acting profession. Lots of critisim & very little appreciation expressed.

  30. fee says:

Leo was my first big celebrity crush-I was at the prime age for that when Titanic came out. 😛

I think he has turned into an amazing actor and he picks really good projects-definitely not the flash in the pan a lot of people thought he would be.

  31. Miss Thang says:

Brad Renfro was definitely not blonde.

  32. elle says:

I love, love, love that he hasn’t done anything to his face. His face is more appealing and interesting than some other male actors with the melted wax look.

  33. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

I’ve loved him since Romeo and Juliet and have seen just about everything he’s been in since then. 🙂

I like him because he doesn’t try to be famous, paparazzi-wise. He hasn’t done anything scandalous. He just lives his life and does his job without the constant paparazzi scrutiny. Actors can avoid it if they don’t want it and he has done a magnificent job of not becoming another paparazzi famewhore.

Also, how is he supposed to talk about two dead actors who DID make mistakes in their lives which lead to tragic deaths? With reverence? He doesn’t have to have survivor’s guilt in relation to those two. They effed up and he feels lucky that he didn’t get sucked into the crap that they did. I’d feel pretty damn lucky too if I was a child actor and still had his career and hadn’t flamed out, killed myself, gone into serious debt or had a drug overdose.

  34. Erin says:

OMG he is SO botoxed out. He has the same expression EVERYWHERE lol.

  35. buckley says:

He has stayed classy. Great actor, but agree with someone upthread about he’s not the need to take shirt off guy.
well..at least he didn’t the fully clothed jump in the pool photo shoot that just about everyone else has done.

in other news: I just got this yesterday and it was all wet…hmmm

  36. BeeCee says:

    ……Thank you

    🙂

  37. Melanie says:

I am a little older than Leo, but I must say in the last five years I finally get what the fuss was about. He is a damn fine actor. My husband swears he is gay though. Whatever. I think his gaydar is busted because he also thinks Clooney and Pitt are gay. Not!

  38. Bodhi says:

He is talking about Jonathan Brandis & River. Brad Renfro was alot younger than Leo & wouldn’t have been compeating for roles with him

  39. missmilly says:

I never thought this guy would be so good looking….major hotness…something very quiet and sexy about him….yikes–plus he’s a great actor..I love the films that he’s in.

  40. Scarlet Vixen says:

Jonathan Brandis was only 2 yrs younger than DiCaprio and was pretty big in TV around the same time that DiCaprio was doing TV.

River Phoenix was already well established and quite possibly beyond auditioning at the time that DiCaprio got his start in showbiz. They’re only 4 yrs apart, but Phoenix got famous way younger (and died shortly after DiCaprio even started getting roles).

Brad Renfro was sort of blond when he was younger, but he’s 8yrs younger than DiCaprio, so I don’t know if he’s who DiCaprio was talking about either. But then again, DiCaprio played roles way younger than his actual age for years, so it’s quite possible they were auditioning together.

Just food for thought because I was curious, too. I didn’t find anything wrong or insulting about what he said. I think he was just being truthful and trying to explain the many pitfalls that exist for young people in the industry. It’s not like Lindsay Lohan is the first child star to f*ck up. It’s been happening for decades–even way before DiCaprio came along.

  41. Hepzibah says:

Never like Leo when he was young. Titanic was an awesome movie, but I thought he was horribly miscast. He looked about 12 years old.

Now, though? He’s HAWT!! I’d hit it in a New York minute, but I’d make it last all afternoon like a good Southern girl.

  42. GatsbyGal says:

It’s been so neat to watch him grow up for the last 15 years. He still looks so young, too. I’m sure he hated his babyface before, but as he gets older, I’ll bet he’s glad for it.

I really think he’s going to be one of those great, iconic actors as he continues to grow as both a person and an artist. Like Clint Eastwood or something.

  43. Dingles says:

I disagree that he never had chemistry with his female leads. I completely bought him and Claire Danes (in an interview he admitted that they were very attracted to each other in real life) and every time I watch “Titanic” I see the kindness in his and Kate’s eyes towards each other. I enjoy watching him as a romantic lead.

  44. p3rp3tu4 says:

His gaze is so intense I think I would shiver if he looked at me

  45. Dear goodness… he looks like a better version of my ex-boyfriend. LOL! 😀

  46. Camille says:

Zoe: Well said! I agree with you.

  47. Chris says:

“It’s a HUGE miscalculation to think that people who are famous or have money are problem-free or have these charmed lives the rest of us can only dream of and that it entitles them to shut up and suck it up because they are ‘lucky’.”

I agree, Zoe. I bet the people who say stuff like that feel like their lives are hard sometimes even though they have charmed lives compared to people who live in third world countries.

  48. Rhiley says:

This is the last guess I will make about the child stars he is referring to. J Brandeis is definately one I feel certain. Brad Renfro is a good guess but the age does seem off. I don’t think it is River Phoenix because Leo mentions in an Esquire interview he did not meet him until the night of his death, when Leo was 18 years old. And to say River died of a heroine overdose is technically not correct, I don’t think. I am wondering if it isn’t Bridgette Andersen he is referring to— the young blonde headed girl who was in one of my favorite movies, Savannah Smiles, and died when she was 20 of heroine overdose.

  49. KatScorp says:

“My two main competitors in the beginning, the blond-haired kids I went to audition with, one hung himself and the other died of a heroin overdose…”

My first thoughts were Jonathon Brandis (sigh, whimper, tearing up) and River. But I’m from Australia and SeaQuest seemed to coincide with my Dolly magazine doing a “OMG! Like OMFG! River’s dead!!!” article and I was clueless about any boy named River – we got everything a year later Down Under. Sigh, again. But it does seem that River died early in Brandis’ adolescent career… sure he was acting as a preteen but “sparkly eyes” or no, wasn’t River to in-demand to audition by the early 90s?

    Brandis. Sigh.

  50. Jello says:

I sure wish there was more of this type of star watching pleasure coming out of Hollywood.

    Thanks Leo.

  51. trashaddict says:

I never would have guessed that he and Mark Wahlberg would have turned out so well.

  52. insidescoop says:

yum yum yum, you just made my day. I was in love with him when I was 13 and in love with him still, drool.

  53. Mouse says:

I’m a fool for blondes and he has a broody sexiness to him, but I’d like to see him walking towards the camera unbuttoning his shirt, pulling off his tie, tousled hair, doing the sexy intellectual thing. I love how natural he looks, interesting eyebrows.

  54. DetRiotgirl says:

Call me crazy, but I have never understood why people find him attractive. He’s a pretty good actor. But, there’s something about him that rubs me the wrong way. I’ve always gotten a bit of a self important douche vibe from him.

I do think it was tacky of him to bring up the semi-blind item everyone is guessing about. But, at the same time, he does have a point. He’s been in the business a long time and he seems to have his big head screwed onto his shoulders fairly securely. So, I will give him credit for that.

  55. Angel says:

Oh, Leo, please don’t make me love you again. It was so hard getting over you the first time.

  56. serena says:

Back then, with all the Titanic chaos, I didn’t like him.
Now, I find him more mature and so damn sexy. Yeah maybe he had a filthy mouth and was spouting about his fame but he was right. Being attached to a role by a group of teenagers really sucks, isn’t it?

  57. serena says:

So watch it, Robert Pattinson 😀

  58. I Choose Me says:

I think he had great chemistry with Kate Winslet and Claire Danes and whatsherface oh yeah, Vera Farmiga in the Departed. Always thought he was good-looking in his younger days but a little too pretty and smutty little boyish for me. Now though I think he’s grown into the hotness and he is definitely a great actor. Just wish he didn’t take himself soooo seriously all the damn time.

  59. UrbanRube says:

I just don’t get the appeal. I think he’s a talented actor, but he just looks like a spoiled-rotten baby boy to me. Not attractive in any sense of the word.

  60. RS says:

River Phoenix and Jonathan Brandis. I didn’t think him mentioning them was tacky at all, I’m not sure why people think it was. It was part of his life, auditioning against these other talented kids – they took different paths – he chose the path without drugs, and they didn’t. Its just a slice of his life and I’m sure he thinks about that at times.
No different than someone thinking about that plane trip that they were going on, then they changed plans at the last minute and the plane went down.

  61. Mercutio says:

DiCaprio should play the role of a junkie. Change it up.
