Dr. Laura is going to end her radio show after N word rant

LOS ANGELES, CA - APRIL 14: Dr. Laura Schlessinger speaks during the American Women in Radio and Television 2010 Genii Awards at the Skirball Cultural Center on April 14, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)
A few days ago, I listened to the infamous “N” word rant that Dr. Laura Schlessinger spewed while on the phone with a black woman who asked for advice dealing with racist acquaintances that her white husband refused to acknowledge. (The audio is below.) I was frankly shocked that Dr. Laura was such a bigot. (Probably because I haven’t paid much attention to her up until this point, although I did remember that she’s a homophobe too.) She spewed the N word 11 times, which wasn’t directed at the caller but still sounded very hateful, and used the tired old argument that black comics and shows like The Wire use it and therefore it must be ok. She accused the caller of having a “chip on her shoulder” and told her that if she couldn’t handle some questions pertaining to how her entire race behaved that she shouldn’t have married outside of it. It was outrageous and hard to listen to.

Now Dr. Laura has told Larry King that she’s going to end her radio show when her contract is up at the end of this year. Good riddance, you old bigot. Here’s more:

“My contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year and I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore,” Schlessinger told King, who also happens to be on his way out this year (for less incendiary reasons).

“The reason is I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that.”

She’s not retiring or quitting, she added, but rather, hopes to be “stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for people in this country.”

Schlessinger apologized for her verbal gaffe the day after it happened, admitting that she did “the wrong thing.”

“I didn’t intend to hurt people, but I did. And that makes it the wrong thing to have done…I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the N-word all the way out—more than one time. And that was wrong. I’ll say it again—that was wrong.”

[From E! Online]

At least she admits that she was wrong, but of course it’s all about how the caller was “hypersensitive” and how “special interest groups” are impeding her “first amendment right” to spew racist epithets and tell a woman not to marry outside her race. And she’s being “attacked” for attacking someone else in the first place.

Here are a couple of the ways that Dr. Laura has been “helpful” to people in the past:

Calls being gay a “biological error”
“I’m sorry, hear it one more time perfectly clearly: If you’re gay or a lesbian, it’s a biological error that inhibits you from relating normally to the opposite sex. The fact that you are intelligent, creative and valuable is all true. The error is in your inability to relate sexually intimately, in a loving way to a member of the opposite sex it is a biological error.”

Claims more gay people are pedophiles
“Well, according to Dr. Aarden VanWeg [ph.], an expert in homosexuality and other forms of deviant sexual behavior in Holland, that although numerically there are more paedophiles that are heterosexual, percentage wise in a population, it is much greater in the homosexual community. So there is some relationship. No, not every homosexual is a paedophile. Obviously not. But it is a greater percentage, much greater.”

Claims gay people are “deviants”
“The debate over gay rights. Rights. Rights? For sexual deviancy, sexual behavior, there are now rights. That’s what I am worried about with the pedophilia, the bestiality and the sado-masochism. Is this all going to be rights too? To deviant sexual behavior. It is deviant sexual behavior. Why does deviant sexual behavior get rights? I don’t understand that…”

[via Stop Dr. Laura, where all quotes are sourced]

Dr. Laura also said that slain teen Matthew Shephard, who was killed in a hate crime over his orientation, could have avoided being murdered if only “he had simply gone home with his friends instead of thinking he was gonna get a little [sex].” (You can read that entire quote on this page.) Now that I’ve read more of what this woman regularly spouts, my question is why has she been given a platform for so long? I guess so many of us have been trying to ignore her, just like the caller’s husband was trying to ignore the stupid things their friends and neighbors said. Ultimately those ignorant attacking words can hurt people though, and those people needed to be called out for their behavior.

Here’s the audio of Laura’s rant, and a link to the full transcript:

  1. Wif says:

    Wow, that audio was awful!

And I don’t think the caller was being hypersensitive.

  2. Praise St. Angie! says:

I didn’t even know that she still had a radio show.

which tells me that she has been pretty much marginalized…I mean, it took a disgusting outburst like this to put her on anyone’s radar, so it’s not like she’s got major recognition anymore.

    in any case, good riddance.

  3. bizzy says:

to regain her “first amendment rights”

STFU. i’m not actually american, but seriously, i want there to be some big fat penalty for people who invoke their first amendment rights WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT THE FRECK THOSE ARE. “congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech.” CONGRESS. a maddened mob with pitchforks and torches may prevent you from expressing yourself, but they are not impinging on your first amendment rights, because your first amendment rights refer to what CONGRESS can do to you.

  4. Dorothy says:

    She is repulsive.

  5. Lway says:

It’s a GREAT time for this old bat to retire.

There is no room for racism in our world anymore. She;s from the stone age though and hence why she cannot wrap her pretty little head around it.

Also – homosexuals are PEOPLE at the end of the day. I know tons of homosexuals and they are FAB despite their sexual preferences. It’s their lives and their decisions and should be respected by the rest of society.

  6. Jane says:

Yes! Finally! I can’t wait until she is off the air. Whenever I am changing radio stations and I hear her voice it makes my skin crawl.

  7. canadianchick says:

What an ignorant beeyatch-of course she was fired.

  8. Moore says:

I had no idea she was that way before this caller. I didn’t pay much attention to her either but man, I’m glad she’s out! I can do without her crap and I’m pretty sure just about everyone else can too.

  9. nnire says:

the terrifying thing is that she has a huge audience. maybe she did get some sort of reprimand from her employers, as LK pointed out last night that her show had some big sponsors that dropped her.

however, the fact remains that she does have a significant following, and she will no doubt find some other platform that will allow her to continue spreading her prejudiced views to the masses.

  10. eja102 says:

I also had no idea who she was until this article. and now I can’t get that 2 minutes back.

  11. Jackson says:

I didn’t know this crazy-ass, nasty woman was still on the air. I hope she just goes away and no one ever hears from her again.

  12. Jackie says:

    This hateful women is awful!

I used to go to protest for her in Boston, back when her first anti-gay comments were made.

I knew she was still around, and was glad she didnt really have a large following, but now knowing she is ending her show, is GREAT news.

I really hope she never comes back. The world doesn’t need anymore ignorant and hateful people with a means to spread it.

  13. Eastbay says:

Ugh. I can not stand that bitch. My mother is an avid listener and actually took parenting advice from her, which led to a very strained relationship between us for many years. I am glad this pig will no longer be on the air.
She’s a fine one to be preaching, didn’t she steal her husband away from his first wife??

  14. guesty says:

who knew she was still around???? good riddance.

  15. denise says:

It would be nice if black people abandon the ‘N’ word too.

And yes she is an a-hole. But I bet she will be back again on the radio soon enough, just like Imus. SMH.

  16. lena says:

Okay, I’m going to put it there before anyone pops into this thread and says “well I agree with her, it’s a double standard that I can’t say it and black people can”. DON’T GO THERE. This comment enrages me and screams white privilege. SOME black people use this word…not ALL of us! Do not be hung up on not being able to say a hateful word because you are white and people will kick your a** for it. If you feel this way get
off of your fu****g high horse.

This “Dr” spewed so much hate and bias in this call I don’t even know where to begin. It’s truly disgusting that she basically told this woman that she shouldn’t have married outside of her race if she can’t put up with racist remarks from her husband family/friends. She’s disgusting.

  17. lena says:

Damn I see I’m too late.

    @ Denise

Do not lump all black people into the well they shouldn’t say it either category, because all of us don’t. And before you come back and say well I didn’t say this…your comment implied it because you didn’t type some, or a lot. You simply typed black people.

  18. lucy2 says:

I didn’t know she was still on the air either! I thought she was discredited and sort of shoved aside years ago when all kinds of dirt on her came out.
She’s disgusting and needs to just go away, live in her own little hate filled world, and stop trying to spread that hate and make everyone else as miserable as she clearly is.

  19. Maddie says:

“”It would be nice if black people abandon the ‘N’ word too””

Yes all us black folks use it everyday, so glad you called us out on it.

That’s the usual excuse for bigots to spout, I’ve never said this word towards another black person in jest or in anger, so no most black people don’t use the word, just because Chris Rock and rappers use it, does not mean the whole community of black people do.

  20. RobN says:

What’s appalling is that so few people can tell the difference between using a word as an insult and using a word during a discussion about that word.

  21. susanne says:

Pleasepleaseplease don’t let her go into politics. That’s just what we’d need.

  22. fizXgirl314 says:

This bitch has been spewing sexist crap all throughout her career and NOW she’s being removed? Goes to show you how much people care about women…

  23. denise says:

    @ LEna

DO not get offended.I am simply saying that they should set the precedent. White people should never use the ‘n’ word. But I hate the fact that black people still use it on each other. It’s a degrading horrible word, and it should be banned from the English language completely.

    @ Maddie
Good for you on not using the word. And please do not imply that I am racist or bigot, because those two things I am not.

  24. Cheyenne says:

About why black people call each other the N-word but get pissed off when whites do it:

Some things are best kept “in the family”, know what I’m saying? It’s like somebody outside your family calling your wife a bitch. She may be a bitch on wheels, but you’d resent anybody else calling her one.

  25. annaloo says:

Good riddance to that old cow!!!

And the caller was not hypersensitive…I, too, get sick of people asking me what Asian people think of a subject. All I can think “how is it that you think I can speak for what every Asian person thinks?”

The caller was sick of stereotypes, and was calling her husband’s friends out on it, and “Dr.” Laura wasn’t even listening… she just went off on her own tangent, with the N-word.

    TERRIBLE

  26. Feebee says:

Hey well on the bright side at least the stupid bitch acknowledged that homosexuality is BIOLOGICAL and not some trifling “lifestyle choice” that some people make in order to be harassed and discriminated against for.

I didn’t listen to the audio, I’ve heard a bit and don’t care to hear any more from that shrew. I too wonder about the double standard regarding the word but it’s not my place to take a stand on it, the standard’s been set. It’s an inappropriate word for valid reasons.

I can’t believe she suggested the woman shouldn’t have married outside her race (amongst other things obviously). Then complains that she should have a right to say what she wants (which she does and she does) but without people getting angry. Forget biological, is this woman on the same planet as us?

  27. mln says:

The origin of the N word was it was the way white slave owners reffered to their property so its’ particularly harsh coming from white people.

And yes it is ignorant and wrong for rappers and so called comedians to use the word but not all of us in the African American community condone that. I do make an exception for the Wire and any realistic television show that is depicting a culture.

  28. Lulu says:

What doctor goes by Dr. Laura? silly!

Never liked her! didn’t listen to the audio. Why give her anymore attention?
But good Lord- look at her saggy neck! yuck!

  29. OhCamille! says:

    This woman is repulsive.
People who live in glass houses eventually blow themselves up. She’s filled with hatred and disgust for all people, not one group in particular. Oh, and noone believes that bs story that it was her decision to move on, B*ch got fired, hahahaha…..loooooooosah!

  30. lena says:

@ Denise, I get what you are saying, but you came right back and said the same thing again. You keep implying that ALL black people use this word….and we don’t. I think it would be wise if people stop letting comedians and rappers speak for the masses as if we all talk the same way.

  31. denise says:

I think it would be wise if people stop letting comedians and rappers speak for the masses as if we all talk the same way.

    @ Lena
I’m am aware that not every one in the black race uses the word.
Unfortunately the ones who often use it are in the entertainment industry and have lots of influence on our impressionable youth.

  32. Claire says:

I understand not ALL black people use the N word, but the majority of people who are in the spotlight do. It is impossible to ask rappers and comedians to refrain from using this and therefore they represent a large portion of black people. Regardless if anyone says it or not, if a white person says it rather than a black person they are scorned but it would be exceptable for a black person to say it.

Once again, here is a perfect example of why racial matters cannot be discussed because everyone gets offended right away and does not want to hear what the truth of the matter is.

  33. Catherine says:

The sad fact is that so many people listen to this kind of ignorance on the radio and actually fall for it.

  34. denise says:

    @ Claire

    Well said, I agree.

  35. sunshine says:

What a hurtful spiteful hag. Many of her former affiliates had already dropped her sow years ago

  36. MissyA says:

She’s a disgusting old coot. Racist, homophobic and misogynistic. Pay attention Ann Coulter, this is your future – friendless and fired from the public eye, long after you’ve faded into obscurity.

As for the “N” word – I don’t like it, I never use it, and I reprimand children for saying it (regardless of their age or skin color). I’d encourage others to do the same.

    It’s a hateful word.

  37. Kiska says:

That woman *sputter sputter* makes me physically ill. I’m so upset that she has a platform to spew her venom. I remember years ago, starting a new job and I drive with another colleague to a conference. Not only did this woman tell me HOW to drive, she insisted we listen to Dr. Laura on the radio because she is SO wonderful. Let me tell you, it was the longest drive of me life. I honestly wanted to drive off the road at one point.

  38. Bec says:

Is this really turning into a discussion about who’s allowed to say the n-word (or any other slur for that matter)? If we all want to be honest here, we know that word is hurtful and causes harm. Ask yourselves how often you say it in public? I would guess not often. Then also ask yourselves why you would want to use it? Lots of people do and say hateful things everyday, do we justify our own bad behavior using this same logic? I know lots of people in the gay community who use slurs against one another. Italian Americans as well. I don’t question why I “can’t” use the word. I choose not to because I’m a thinking person. Nor do I believe that any of these people represent an entire group. They’re individuals. Just like you. The use of certain slurs within a particular group is a cultural tactic intended to defang a corrosive word devised to harm. Whether you believe this tactic works or not is a legitimate topic of discussion. Unlike the idea that it’s somehow “unfair” that YOU can’t use one of the most divisive words in the English language. Really? How would you incorporate this word into your everyday life? And why would you want to? What’s the root of this burning desire to use this particular slur as opposed to another? Because some black people use it? That’s pretty meager. Of course you can use the word. But it’s sure to convey more about you than you might want people to know.

  39. pookie says:

@Bec – Wow. Quite possibly one of the best posts I’ve ever read on this site. I feel exactly the same way, but could not have stated it as eloquently and intelligently as you did. Thank you.

  40. pookie says:

Oh, and Dr. Laura is ugly because she lives and breathes ugliness and hate. Takes it’s toll on a body! Good riddance to this piece of trash.

  41. Roxi says:

Commenter #38, I can’t see your name, but THANK YOU! I think you have hit the nail on the head with your very well-said comment.

  42. gen says:

I can’t believe I use to listen to this woman (some 15 years ago). She is so blind & angry & pathetic. I hope she rots in hell & that is all I gotta say about that.
P.s. Listened to the whole racisit call…”Dr”Laura was totally wrong

  43. Sns02215 says:

Fucking skank is all I can say. I honestly believe that people like this hateful hag, Ann Coulter, Rush, et al. serve absoluely NO purpose as human beings except to incite hatred and violence against minorities. I hope she gets hit by a fucking bus.

There. That’s MY First Amendment right in saying that!

  44. Mrs. Claus says:

I take it she didn’t vote for President Obama.

  45. Karin says:

    Dear Dr. Laura:

In your radio show you say that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination … End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God’s Laws and how to follow them.

    1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    3. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

    4. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

    5. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

  46. Wif says:

@Bec – I’ll say it again: AWESOME post!

  47. LisaMarie says:

Thank god!!! This woman has been spewing hate and anger under the guise of “helping people” for far too long. Ever look up her wiki page? She’s got so much sh*t that she’s done in her past that she just smooths right over when she’s ranting at people. She is a deplorable human being. Ugh. She disgusts me.

  48. California Surfer says:

OMG this chick looks just like Rachel Zoe!

  49. GatsbyGal says:

I just read the transcript and I gotta say, Dr. Laura not only sounded crazy and full of hate, but she didn’t even really address the woman’s problem.

And really, who is Dr. Laura to tell this black woman what is and what isn’t racist? If those comments made by her husband’s friends and family were making her feel uncomfortable, that’s the only thing that matters.

And Dr. Laura’s whole “you people have a black man in office, stop complaining of racism” attitude was unreal. How this woman managed to stay on the air so long is incredible to me.

  50. OhCamille! says:

    @Bec & @ Karin
Your posts were so well written and thoughtful. Wow! I’m impressed!

  51. Miss. Thang says:

    @Bec: Fantastically put!

I don’t think Dr. Laura gave the lady a chance to state her point, and maybe she wasn’t doing the best job of doing so. I can completely understand not wanting to be a novelty, especially in your own home. It sounds to me like when her husband’s acquaintances came over they were only interested in talking about her being black. I don’t think there’s anything inherently racist about that (though I can imagine that it would *easily* go there). There is a possibility that those people were genuinely interested in her culture, but they also sounded disrespectful. I have been in situations where one physically obvious aspect of me was a constant topic of conversation, and it’s difficult and hurtful to feel defined by one physical aspect that has no bearing on your personality. Race is such an emotionally charged topic that I imagine it was significantly worse for her.
I feel really bad for her and it sounds like Dr. Laura jumped to conclusions without really listening to what she was saying. Though I doubt she could have actually helped her even if she had.
How does a woman with so little pateince keep a talk show going for so long?
I agree that it’s time for her to retire and I hope it’s a true retirement where she lives her days out quietly away fromt he spotlight so we don’t have to hear from her again.

  52. Praise St. Angie! says:

Karin, I think I love you.

  53. lena says:

@ Claire…how did you come up with comedians and rappers representing a large portion of the black community? This is an extremely ignorant comment. It would be like me saying that the Jersey Shore kids represent Italian Americans. This is the problem with some people, people say something or act a certain way and people for some odd reason are unable to realize that one person does not speak for an entire group of people. What’s so hard about undertanding that?

Furthermore, why are you upset/concerned that you can’t use the N word without being attacked for it? The question you should be asking yourself or others is why do you want to use the word? You and others being upset over not being able to use a hurtful word speaks volumes….disgusting, white privilege volumes.

And what was the truth of the matter? Did you even listen to the tape before you commented? The caller was talking about her white husband’s friends/family saying ignorant sh** about Black people in front of her,… No one even bought up the “N” word except the so called “Dr.” The truth of the matter is this “Dr.” is a disgusting human being.

  54. original kate says:

“It’s a degrading horrible word, and it should be banned from the English language completely.”

@ denise: it is a horrible word, but it should not be “banned” from the english language- no word should. banning racist speech will not help heal the race relations in this country, anymore than banning the C word will help heal sexism. also, banning any word is a slippery slope into nazitown. instead, we need to use our language more carefully and thoughtfully.

as for dr. laura i can’t believe people still listen to this leathery old freak. i thought she retired years ago.

  55. Miss. Thang says:

Actually lena, the caller brought up the N word.

  56. Bubbles says:

I vote for getting rid of the “N” word, the “C” word, the “F” word, and the “D” word. Are there not other adjectives in the English language that could substitute to get a point across? Gosh.

  57. kim says:

I think we should ban B**ch, I hear woman and men refer to woman with that horrible offensive slur.

  58. Audra says:

    She has an icky neck.

  59. TaylorB says:

Hot diggity dog, I wrote a post that was so offensive it got the axe.

That being said Dr (not a med or psych doc by the way) Laura is about as qualified to dispense psych advice as my butcher, Dr Laura is full of crap and a bully. There is a way to make a point without being rude and disrespectful to a person coming to you for advice. Why is it that people do not know that woman has NO background in mental health education? She has a PHd in phisiology, which is great for high end Gym Teachers and sports team managers. I must confess when it comes to getting advice from the gym teacher I would prefer that they stick to athletes foot or jock itch, not psych advice at all. This is just my opinion, but I don’t diagnose humans, MD’s shouldn’t diagnose my patients either, and a phisioligist should not pretend to be a shrink that is just wrong and in some peoples opinions unethical.

  60. denise says:

    @ Original Kate

I know , I know, you are absolutely right. Banning a word would be an infringement upon our freedom of speech, and I’m all for freedom of speech.

    @ Lena

I don’t think anyone is disputing the fact that Dr. Laura is’ a disgusting human being, of course she is.
So glad she will not be on the air anymore, and to think , that she has written childrens’ books. Just gross.

  61. Miss. Thang says:

    @kim:
What I find disturbing is that somehow (!) some women have convinced themselves that being a b*tch is not a bad thing!! WHAT!?!?

  62. Crash2GO2 says:

Good grief. No wonder my mother is crazy – she has adored Dr. Laura for years. I had no idea Dr. Laura was like this! Truly, I didn’t. Dear God, it explains so much…

  63. lovelylaura says:

Audra – I thought the exact same thing, too! (shudder)

I used to be a nanny for grade-school kids, but once a week I would come in early to clean the house while they were in school. I used to listen to Dr. Laura while cleaning for one reason only: She would make me so mad, I would scrub the floors and countertops till they shone! Plus, I could get the house done faster than if I was actually listening to music.

She is a miserable woman who just wants others to be as unhappy as she is. She should have been off the air years ago. I say good riddance to bad rubbish!

  64. Bee says:

Sayonara Dr.psycho! And don’t let the door hit your skinny racist a** on the way out.

  65. Cakes says:

Thank you Bizzy! Its a shame that Americans have no grasp on our amendments. You are dead on about the first amendment.
She implied that the caller was being hyper-sensitive and basically said “deal with it” to her husbands friends comments.
We all know of ugly things to say and names to call other races. But just because you can say them, it doesnt mean you should. Its a shame that we cant seem to close the racial divides and let go of the name calling and the hatred. If you dont like someone for who they are thats one thing. But to be ugly to someone soley because of how they look is, frankly, pathetic and it only widens the racial divide.

  66. Cakes says:

On a totally superficial note- shes starting to look like Iggy Pop.

  67. Jeri says:

Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Sarah Palin should go on a speaking tour together – they seem to be on the same wavelength, although Sarah hides her prejudice a little better.

  68. canadianchick says:

@Karin, awesome, well written post. I’m Canadian and not for sale till September, lmfao 🙂

  69. freckles says:

Wow… I knew about her hateful attitude towards the gay community (sexual deviants?? SERIOUSLY???) but I had no idea she was so racist.

I do sometimes think SOME black people can be hyper-sensitive about race, but I also know that much, MUCH more racism goes on that a white person can even imagine. It’s not just saying something racist (i.e. calling someone the N word in a derogatory way), but racist attitudes show themselves through one’s actions in ways you may never even realize until the shoe’s on the other foot. And I feel HORRIBLE for this poor caller who has been feeling like the object of racism for years and who finally reached out for help, only to be slammed by someone probably even more racist than her husband’s relatives.

This whole thing is just terrible.. I couldn’t even listen to all of the audio. How awful to think that racism is still (clearly) such a huge issue in this country, and people like her clearly think they have a right to say offensive things in the name of “free speech.” And I love that us having a black president apparently means that racism has magically disappeared… what an old lunatic.

I have to stop now… I’m just ranting at this point. Lol!

@Karin, I saw that the other day! There’s more to it if anyone’s interested, http://www.humanistsofutah.org/2002/WhyCantIOwnACanadian_10-02.html

@Bec, Karin and Lena – AWESOME, INTELLIGENT POSTS. I copied and saved them in a word document so I can pass your words along to those who need this knowledge. Thanks!

@freckles – excellent letter in that link, thank you.

If Americans loved their constitution so much (and well they should), why did EVERYONE let Cheney/Bush/Rove etc. wreck it with the Patriot Act (I & II)?

“Doctor” Laura is a disgusting piece of biological waste. I used to listen to her show about 15 years ago, and within a few episodes realized that she blames the victim in almost every single scenario. Got raped? You must have done something wrong. Get murdered? You must have done something wrong. Unfaithful husband? You must have done something wrong. People using completely inappropriate and insulting racial epithets? You must have done something wrong. She is a hateful, spewing venemous snake.
She makes ridiculous and asinine assumptions, like telling the woman caller that it’s okay to use the N-word, because ALL african americans use it on eachother (which is simply NOT true). And even if it was true that all african americans use that word, that doesn’t make it okay for an outsider to come along say those things. My friends and I used to call eachother “stupid whore”. All of us in the group knew that 1) we were not actually stupid, 2) we were not whores, and 3) it was said as a complete joke amongst best friends. By “Doctor” Laura’s rationale, it would then be 100% okay if some other person who didn’t know me well came up and called me a stupid whore. Believe me, it would not have not been perceived as a joke to me and any one of my friends. They don’t know me. . they don’t have the latitude to make the assumption that I would not find that extremely offensive.
Basically “Doctor” Laura calls the woman hypersensitive and blames her for marrying a man of a different race.
She is disgusting and she should have been removed from the airwaves a long time ago.

    @ denise

I’m black and one of 14 kids. I have a very large family even outside of my immediate family. I can’t recall ever hearing anyone in my immediate or extended family use the “n” word. Most of my friends are black and I’ve never held a conversation featuring the “n” word. I don’t hear the “n” word in my world. I’ve heard it used by white people more often than black people personally (I’m not counting TV shows, movies, or music because that’s not real). I can’t control white people using it so what makes you think black people can control other black people using it?

  77. Steve says:

Glad she’s gone. Let’s hope she quickly fades in to obscurity.

Is it really any surprise she’s a racist? She’s a homophobic, sexist, hypocrite and always has been.

  78. I Choose Me says:

Without having heard the audio, I initially didn’t think this was a huge deal. (Seriously, shame one me) I just thought based on CNN clips that she was repeating the word to make a point and not actively referring to anyone as the n-word. I knew nothing about her radio show or her history of hateful speech. (Again shame on me for not investigating fully). Having heard the entire audio and read the transcript as well as her previous quotes I have but one thing to say. F-ck you lady! (And I use that term loosely) and all you stand for.

At beck and Karin. Wonderful posts! Wish I could have been as articulate and thoughtful. Still too angry though.

  79. piedlourde says:

Karin, great post. Isn’t the Old Testament/Tanakh just the yummiest pick ‘n’ mix EVER? I get a sugar rush just by thinking of all the juicy bits that suit my particular palate!

This woman is not about politics right or left or in the middle, she is about ratings and in her warped world being cruel to a caller is ratings. She is a well educated gym teacher who knows that shock value and offensive comments drives ratings, like Jerry Springer, Rush, Imus, Beck, Oprah, and the king of them all Howard Stern. I would bet if you sat down with this woman, who is while not a shrink a very bright person in other areas, you would find out one of two options, either she is a normal person bulking up her horrid comments for ratings and isn’t actually the homophobic, bigot she seems to be or she actually feels that way and well… that is just depressing.

    Ann Coulter’s future.

  82. Kate Dooley says:

“Ouch” said Dr. Laura as she removed her foot from her mouth. I have to say I enjoy seeing a phony baloney personality open her mouth and make a very large boo-boo while the world is listening. I think her sponsors wanted to put some distance between them and the “Doc”. And so she “decided” to end her radio show. What a coincidence! I have never listened to her and her mien…and by the way, I consider her comments about President Obama as racist and ignorant. How about a little respect for the guy that’s trying to dig us out of the huge crater Bush left us in. Don’t dis our Prez…

  83. Katija says:

Confession: I knew that Dr. Laura was a really, super-tough advice radio person.

I had NO idea she was a gay hater or even a conservative/Republican. Huh.

  84. Katija says:

Just listened to it. This woman is going to say that she was booted for expressing her point, but she’s an idiot. She could have made her point – It’s not fair that blacks can say it and we can’t (her opinion, not mine) – without saying the word over and over again. Also, saying “don’t NAACP me” is just vile. Good riddance.

  85. Twez says:

She and “Dr. Phil” can both kiss my ass for using their academic title when their doctorates are completely unrelated to psychology or counseling. They are both frauds and Schlessinger is should carry her 5,000-year-old ass off to the conservative lecture circuit with Sarah Palin.

  86. abby says:

She did NOT lose her first amendment right! Did the government come in and interfere with her job? No. All that happened is her BOSSES told her that she was inappropriate. They pay her, so she needs to respect what they expect her to do/say. But that is not a loss of her first amendment rights. When I go to work, I know what I can and cannot say, is that a violation of MY rights?
