Michelle Williams shows off her cream of wheat styling in Venice

These are photos of Michelle Williams promoting Meek’s Cutoff at the Venice Film Festival. Ugh. Like a big bowl of cream of wheat. I guess the color is technically “pale grey” or “eggshell.” But it just looks like a big steaming pile of bland. And taken with Michelle’s short, platinum hair… this is just a horrible look. Michelle turns 30 years old in a few days. That’s a “3” and a “0” in case you thought she looked like a grandma in this dress. She seriously looks a little Meg Ryan-esque, and I mean that in the bad way, as in she looks like a fading star in her early fifties who is trying to cover up some botched plastic surgery. Michelle has a cute figure too – I don’t see why she felt the need to wear something so unflattering and old-ladyish. Not only that, but that dumb bow looks like she just tucked a tissue into her collar. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

As for the film, I actually thought that Michelle was promoting Blue Valentine, the romantic drama that Michelle did with her maybe-part-time-lover Ryan Gosling. Instead, she’s promoting this Meek’s Cutoff, which Variety describes as “a low-budget period Western with a bracing feminist spin. Re-creating a desolate stretch of the Oregon Trail with a meticulous sense of physical detail, this beautifully hand-crafted picture welds… subtle political concerns and eye for rugged American landscapes to a spare yet classically involving tale of a wayward wagon team.” Eh. You couldn’t pay me to watch it, but I can’t stand Westerns, nor Western-revisionist histories, so I’m not the target audience.

Speaking of Michelle’s part-time lover, Gosling was performing with his band Dead Man’s Bones over the weekend. I prefer him with some scruff – but he does look very cute in these photos:

I really love her haircut .

That dress does her absolutely no justice , just because she’s turning 30 yrs old doesn’t mean it’s time to hide the décolletage and wear such bland clothing .

  2. MooHoo says:

She’s still pretty though despite unusual dress. She is also quite talented and way classier than a lot of what you see on the red carpet.

  3. lisa says:

I like her haircut a lot.. but that color is wrong wrong wrong..

I don’t like her clothing choices either..She is a really good actress though..just horrible style

  4. Lady Jane says:

I think she looks great. A bit Mia Farrow-esque but at least not a cookie-cutter actress with (yawn) hair extensions and an LBD. Maybe I just feel sorry for her because she plays the tragic figure well, but if that is, so be it.

And I like cream ‘o wheat.

  5. CIdee says:

Sorry, I think she looks beautiful. Her hair is perfect and, though the neck isn’t my favorite, the dress isn’t THAT bad. She is so pretty.

  6. Vee says:

Such a lovely actress with the worst styling and taste ever. The dress is awful. And sigh, Ryan, he is so nice to look at. I have no clue about his music, but I could stare for hours at him!

  7. canadianchick says:

Cream of wheat makes me want to throw up..oh wait, Ryan Gosling and his Corey Hart shades have settled my stomach. He’s the Tums of Celeb culture…ahhhh.

  8. bb says:

Did anyone else think this was Carey Mulligan at first?

I love the creamsicle hair but I agree that dress is granny-ish – hate the shapeless wasteline; makes it look like she’s hiding midding age spread.

  9. Zelda says:

Hate the dress, HATE the film title.

    But what a cute haircut.

  10. Tazina says:

Bad hair color and style, bland dress not flattering to her figure. She needs a stylist or something. She could look stunning but this isn’t it.

  11. toto says:

hello all, will uplease help me , i just can’t get over hoe much she look like the actress who drawn in water natalie .. for first time i notice this just lookat the face n imagine black her n make her lil softer

  12. toto says:

i think she would be great as marlin monro

  13. Susannah Leigh says:

I seriously have no clue what you’re talking about. She looks great, the dress is great. Why do professional gossips flip out when a celebrity steps out of Mom-approved line and wears something unusual and truly fashion-y? (And Michelle Williams’ dress isn’t even all that outre.) Don’t they sell Vogue where you live? And then when you guys freak about the style choices of Helena Bonham Carter or Tilda Swinton–uh, do you really think they were trying to look the way you want them to and somehow REALLY missed the mark? No. They’re wearing what they want, but if it doesn’t happen to look like what’s in your very safe dream wardrobes it’s “dumb, dumb, dumb.”

  14. annaloo says:

It’s THAT BOW. It’s awful. She should have shown up with Ryan Gosling wrapped around her neck, not that bow.

  15. Lynne says:

From Rachel. Mcadams to that, what a step down

  16. serena says:

oh god, that’s some horrible fashion. Why did she feel the urge to dress up like an old lady?

  17. jemshoes says:

    Not her best look 🙂

  18. PrettyTarheel says:

Kaiser, you have to warn us when you’re going to hit us with some Gosling first thing in the AM. I have barely woken up-how am I supposed to function the rest of the day?
There needs to be a Gosling alert prior to the jump, just so I can prepare myself for the hotness.
Oh, and she looks bland, but pretty. If she’s really sleeping with him, then she looks like a hideous bitch and I hate her. 🙂

  19. Ycnan says:

wow, usually agree with you on style but i absolutely love the way she looks. love love love her hair and while the dress would not work on everyone, i think she really pulls if off.

  20. susanne says:

I think she pulls it off- it’s her style, completely. It’s different, but fuck, isn’t that what Hollywood needs? I think we’ve become trained to view just one aesthetic as beautiful. Really American in a bad way if you ask me.

I haven’t had coffee yet. Maybe I’ll be less snarky after, but I think you people need to broaden your ideas of pretty.

Now I need to watch that video of the kid singing Katy Perry again.

  21. aenflex says:

Dead on. Dress is ugly, wrong genre, bad texture (oatmeal or whatever), it’s just hideous. She can do so much better.

… if it had no sleeves and no bow, maybe. oh, and a different color. so basically change everythig and turn it into a plum colored sheath, and she woulda been rockin.

  22. Katie says:

Love Ryan instensely. He is one of my ultimate top favorites and has been ever since I first saw him in Murder by Numbers years ago. That was on over the holiday weekend and he was so young in it. Young and hot.

I like Michelle but I don’t like the platinum hair. I think a more honey blond looks better. Don’t really like the dress either but it looks like it could be better in person but doesn’t photograph well.

  23. gem says:

Love the hair hate the dress it creates bad lines on her good figure

  24. Lenore says:

I don’t mind the colour scheme – she’s too lovely to be outdone by beigery – but something’s a little off here.

Remove the sleeves and get rid of that hideous cutesy bow-thing round the neck, and I think she’d be perfect.

  25. Kitten says:

Gosling is so insanely adorable. The cute little smile..*sigh*

I love Michelle. The dress isn’t my favorite but I don’t care because she is just completely fantastic.
    LOVE.

  26. Mel says:

Got a lot of love for Michelle. I think she’s both talented and beautiful. I like her style, very quirky…original. Much prefer her with pixie cut but colour needs darkening. Love the dress.

And anyone who thinks Ryan would be stepping down has no taste. I’d love to see them as a permanent couple.

  27. Laura says:

HOW much do I have to pay Ryan Gosling to wear those tight, Mad Men suit pants every day in every picture?

I’m not loving the hair but I have secret love for the dress

  28. TeeTee says:

I think she looks rather nice, not the same ole cookie cutter look.

  29. Delta Juliet says:

I too love her hair, the cut and color (it would suck on me but she pulls it off)

The dress itself is not that bad but as others have said, the bow sucks.

  30. melinda says:

I think the color of her hair is too platinum, needs to be warmed up a little. The dress would be a lot cuter if it was shorter. The top of the dress is conservative and needs something to make it less grandma-ish, like being cute and right above the knee, or maybe just below.

  31. Raven says:

She might look good with one of those pixie cuts like Emma Watson got recently. She definitely needs to update her look. She ought to find someone whose look she likes and hire her stylist at least for a few events. She doesn’t seem to have an awareness of how she looks.

  32. Rosi says:

She can wear whatever she wants, she is such a lovely person. It’s time she gets more famous than Katie Holmes… she deserves it for her acting much more!

  33. cprincess says:

Ive done platinum hair and it was way to high maintenance fir me-had to do the roots like every 2 weeks!
It looks great on her and the hair cut is great too…
She was amazing in Brokeback Mountain…

  34. lucy2 says:

She can pull of the haircut, but the color is too white blond for her. Don’t like the dress, but Michelle has a very quirky, retro style, so it does kind of suit her.
I like her a lot as an actress, she’s one of the few who I think does it for the love of acting, not the paychecks and fame.

  35. spooge says:

TINY HEAD!! TINY HEAD!! TINY HEAD!!!

  36. Ruffian9 says:

I think she’s lovely, actually. While I’m not in love with the dress, it is nice to see an actress without her tits hanging out screaming LOOK AT ME. She seems sweet & conservative, which is just fine. Her skin absolutely glows…I’m jealous.

  37. Crash2GO2 says:

    Nice pants Ry. yum

  38. I Choose Me says:

I really like her hair and make-up here. And I love the style and fit of the dress just not the colour, which I agree is very ‘oatmeal.’

  39. Mistral says:

I actually think she looks cute. I like the hair and makeup. I think it is cute that you can kind of see her belly a bit. She’s cute. She and that Carey Mulligan could be sisters.

  40. Camille says:

Ryan G = Major Hotness. Love him.

Michelle is pretty, don’t care for the neckline/sleeves of the dress though.

  41. Shy says:

I bet people in Venice and in other places come to her and say: “Miss Carey Mulligan – can you give me autograph?” 🙂 I will not be surprised if even some journalists or photographers in Venice will mistake her for Carey. Bad choice for haircut.

  42. dovesgate says:

I love this dress! There are a couple problems with it but not what everyone else is saying. I love the sweet bow over a lady-like decolletage, the sleeves are fine.

I just hate that the hem is ragged-looking and that it looks like she should have been wearing long line Spanx that go up under her boobs instead of ones that cut off at her belly button. That or its a long tank bra type thing that comes to just above her belly button. Either way, it seems to be an undergarment issue.

  43. Ally says:

I’m surprised that’s Jason Wu; it looks like a Chanel knock-off.

However, she can do no wrong. And her style is always genuinely 60s gamine (Twiggy, Mary Quant), so this is consistent. Like Kirsten Dunst, she has her own style vibe, and it’s more interesting than your average HWood stylist’s taffeta parade.
