Tom Cruise’s lawyer compares Dr. Drew to Nazi Goebbels

Tom Cruise can launch a fancy website touting his 25 years of success in film, go on Oprah with tons of celebrity supporters, and tote around his adorable toddler and beaming wide-eyed wife all he wants. All he has to do is get defensive and the public is reminded that he’s the pint-sized spokesperson for one of the worlds most dangerous and prolific cults.

Today Tom Cruise’s lawyer compared popular television psychiatrist Dr. Drew Pinksy to notorious Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels after Pinksy dared criticize Cruise for his involvement in the cult. Tom Cruise himself has been compared to Goebbels by a prominent German WWII historian, and calling anyone that practices psychiatry a Nazi is typical Scientolo-speak.

In next month’s Playboy, Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” says: “A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood – maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.” Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, told us: “This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels.”

[From The NY Post]

Cruise called psychiatry a “Nazi science” in a 2005 interview with Entertainment Weekly, and cited a bunch of supposed connections between psychiatry and the Nazis that could be considered tenuous at best, and weren’t even true.

Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard blamed psychiatry for all crime, said it was founded by the Nazis, called psychiatrists murderers and said they “destroyed every great civilization to date.” One of the main goals of Scientology is to eradicate psychiatry and outlaw all psychiatric drugs.

Cruise’s lawyer should have used their tired old defense that any criticism of Scientology is somehow religious intolerance, but instead he resorted to that ridiculous Nazi comparison and reminded us why Cruise fell out of the public’s good graces in the first place.

I wonder when that shitty Valkyrie film will finally come out. All it will take is one former Scientologist sitting in the audience to point out how much of L. Ron’s doctrine is secretly hidden in that film. Once that movie tanks and it’s pointed out that it’s a vehicle to disseminate Scientology Cruise will have to do a lot more than smile and show off his family to save his image.

The vaunted Mr. Hubbard had it in for psychiatry since his first visit to a shrink unveiled what ludicrously egocentric, manipulative, screwed up person he really was. L. Ron died a virtual criminal, on the run from U.S. law, hounded by countless lawsuits from those he had bilked or harassed with his new founded COS, his brain swimming in a sea of high-grade psychiatric drugs.

You can judge a person by the heroes he makes, so what does this say about Tom Cruise ?

  2. UrbanRube says:

I love Dr. Drew and am no fan of Scientology or Tom Cruise’s “touting” and “toting” antics, but I agree that it’s unprofessional for Dr. Drew to speak out in the media about someone he’s never met. If TC were a client of his and he spoke out, he could lose his license. But publicly diagnosing someone and possibly reopening early childhood wounds in the media is bad juju.

  3. geronimo says:

No argument with Dr Drew’s comments or perspective on scientology but he could have made his point without actually citing Cruise himself here.

Suggesting publicly that Cruise is the product of a neglected, troubled, abusive childhood is very questionable, even if true. It seems highly provocative and unprofessional from someone who makes his living dealing with the mental health well-being of others.

  4. Donaldo says:

Dr. Drew has every right to make Cruise a target, since it was Cruise himself who started uttering all those ridiculous things in public (such as psychiatry being a “Nazi science” and attacking women with PPD).

Cruise made himself a target with his ignorant rantings. Why do you think Dr. Drew didn’t attack John Travolta, who is also a Scieno? Because Travolta hasn’t made stupid, intolerant statements about things he can’t understand.

Tom Cruise publicly proselytizes for a dangerous cult that tries to convince people to stop taking needed psychiatric medication. Last time I checked, Cruise didn’t have a medical license.

  5. elisha says:

I think Scientologists are against Physciatrists because if any of their members went to one, they’d realize they were crazy to be a member. So it’s like, a safety, to have them hate psychiatrists. Cuz you have to be crazy to be a Scientologist.

  6. headache says:

    Tom Cruise is a hypocrite.

Explain to me why it is some sort of crime that a learned and experienced man would point out the issues presented by Tom Cruise’s increasingly batty behavior. But when Tom, who has no medical training or background to speak of lambastes an entire segment of the population dealting with mental illnesses or imbalances without knowing ANYTHING about them, it’s perfectly permissible.

At least in Dr Drew’s case, he has Tom Cruise’s very public behavior and statements to base his thoughts on. Plus, Tom has spoken openly in the past about how abusive his father was and how hard his mother worked.

Lastly, Dr Drew’s entire public career is based on giving his opinion on what might be the underlying causes of certain behaviors.

P.S. why are scientologists obsessed with the Nazi Regime?

  7. geronimo says:

Well that’s the whole point, the medical qualification! Cruise doesn’t have one but Dr Drew does which is why it’s his judgement that’s at issue here. Professional responsibility! Cruise doesn’t have any professional medical (or any other kind, for that matter) responsibility and can make all the demented claims he likes – there is no weight behind his insane ramblings.

It’s the doc’s professional reputation that’s at stake here and I think he’s made a serious error of judgement.

  8. headache says:

Geronimo, Dr Drew spends five nights a week dispensing medical related advice to people he’s never met and is not treating. I think Loveline has been on what? at least 13 years at this point.

  9. geronimo says:

Are these not people who seek out his professional opinion?? There is no comparison here. He could have made exactly the same point without ever mentioning Cruise. Stooping to Cruise’s level is a highly dubious justification in my opinion.

  10. Donaldo says:

P.S. why are scientologists obsessed with the Nazi Regime?

It’s a case of psychological projection…if the Scienos took over the world (which they want to do), they would have SPs (suppressive persons) exterminated.

An SP is anyone who’s not a Scientologist.

Oh, by the way…Scienos would also have gays and folks with mental deficiencies killed too.

  11. headache says:

Have you ever listened to Loveline?

  12. geronimo says:

We can go around in circles on this. Can you tell me why Loveline (which I’ve never listened to – in UK) and him dispensing advice on it to strangers is relevant to this? I’m trying to understand what I’m missing here. This is not a pro-Tom or pro-scientology position I’m taking here!

  13. devilgirl says:

Dr.Drew is only saying what many people in Hollywood and the world have thought for years. Comparing Drew to a Nazi is like comparing Cruise to a great actor. Not relevant. Cruise does need help, he is sick and he and his Scientology bulls%$^ can go to hell. I am in a mood today!

  14. Ron says:

If the Scientologists killed all the gays, what would they wear?

  15. Donaldo says:

Check that link for more info on L. Ron Hubbard’s psycho plans for anyone who isn’t a Scieno.

    http://www.solitarytrees.net/racism/dispose.htm

  16. headache says:

I know, geronimo. You are a reasonable person and not a loonie. LOL

Loveline is, I’m sure you’ve guessed, a call in advice show that deals mainly with sexual questions. But Dr Drew usually brings up mental and addictive issues as well. Sometimes people call up about their questions and it will become clear that there is an underlying condition not necessarily in them but in their girlfriends, parents, etc.

Plus, not every caller is asking about themselves. Maybe they have a girlfriend who is acting strange.

He has often brought up celebs and other public figures, television shows, familiar situations, etc to use as an example.

  17. laurie says:

    “This unqualified television performer…”

We’re talking about Tom Cruise right? 😉

FYI: Drew Pinksy has a MEDICAL DEGREE from the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA! While I am no fan of the Trojans, that is a damn good med school – tier 1!!!

  18. Kaiser says:

So, to follow Cruise’s logic, the only way to surpress the dangers of psychiatry by: locking up shrinks, burning pyschiatriac books, and treating people who believe in anything related to psychiatry like second class citizens.

Jeez, who are the Nazis again?

  19. devilgirl says:

Dr.Drew is an actual doctor trained in the field of psychiatric medicine specializing in addictive personality disorders.

  20. Jen says:

Yeah, because the “religious persecution” that Scientologists claim to experience is just like the atrocities committed by the Nazis against Jews, Gypsies, and the mentally handicapped/ill.

And if you read the Scientology literature, it is eerily similar to the views of Hitler’s Final Solution and Nazi dogma.

    L. Ron Hubbard just thought of it later.

It is a cult, and it is frightening…and for the life of me, I cannot figure out how anyone can be stupid enough to believe this hateful tripe.

  21. geronimo says:

Thanks for that, headache, much as I figured.

But what he might say on Loveline to strangers and about strangers is very different than him talking about a specific person in the very specific terms that he has. It’s not that he’s not right, it’s not that it’s not what everyone else already thinks, it’s that a reputable professional doctor/psychiatrist would say publicly that there was neglect and possible abuse in Cruise’s background, with all the implications inherent in that.

I’m think I’m going to remain shocked and I think you’re going to remain puzzled by my being shocked!

  22. velvet elvis says:

C’mon y’all. Quit picking on the Scientologists. We need them. If you recall…in the event of a car accident they are the only ones who can help.

  23. Ben says:

You know what makes Dr Drew qualified to offer that medical opinion?

Maybe he just reads Parade Magazine. Back in 2006, Cruise told them the following about his dad:

“[He] was a bully and a coward… the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life — how he’d lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang!

“For me, it was like, ‘There’s something wrong with this guy. Don’t trust him. Be careful around him.’ There’s that anxiety.”
    ************

That was lifted from another blog somewhere, I can’t remember.

Why do people have such short memories? Are people just THAT lazy they can’t be bothered to remember something or at least google it?

  24. Obvious says:

I see no problem with Dr. Drew. All he did was make a point. He took comsone whom we all know and recognize as insane had made a point. It’s known that was he is syaing is theory since A) he’s not Cruise’s doctor and B)He would have lsot his licence-much Like Dr. Phil-Fatso should have.

Besides Dr. Drew isn’t trying to convert the world to his brand of lunacy. More power to Dr. Drew.

ANd Tom Cruise needs ot go hide under a rock until he gets real priorities. I mean come on they lock Suri under the stairs (Don’t bleieve me, it was on Oprah when they toured their house check for yourself). That man is seriously deranged and that child should be taken away from him. all of his children should be.

  25. Kevin says:

In an unrelated question,,,is that eye patch in the picture a prop or is it the result of fellatio gone horribly wrong? Screwing someones eyes out wasn’t supposed to be literal I always thought.

  26. Laurie says:

Hey Ben, what qualifies Dr. Drew to give advice? A MEDICAL DOCTORATE AND YEARS OF TRAINING IN PSYCHIATRIC MEDICINE AND ADDICTION. The Dr. isn’t just some BS media hype, he has a medical doctorate.

  27. Wil in Mpls says:

Jesus .. I wish these Scientologist hacks would come up with a new analogy for their “attackers.” As far as I know, no one wants to gather the Scientologist into box cars, take them to camps and kill them. It pisses me off every time these *ssholes equate their “persecution” with the murder of the Jews.

    👿

  28. Vince says:

Its insane how they hide behind the first amendment considering how aggressively they try to stifle critics.

The unfortunate poster child of the 1st amendment is also one of its greatest (private) threats.

  29. Every Right says:

Dr. Drew has every right to call out Tom’s outrageous behavior as an example of what can happen if you deny childhood trauma. In fact, Dr. Drew is doing a PSA for those that feel lost and might turn to a cult to fill a void they might feel in their life. I guess some of you have forgotten that scientologists have killed(my fervent belief)and destroyed people that have left the cult or disagreed with them. Dr. Drew’s critical observation seems quite harmless compared to that.

  30. Diamond Dog says:

Hey Tom! You look like a turkey!

  31. gg says:

    I agree with ‘Every Right’.

I think it’s high time a qualified professional doctor of Psychiatry weighed in on the Psycho Dum Cruise and just why anybody would join a ridiculous organized crime group for fear of their soul being in mortal danger.

“After receiving his undergraduate degree from Amherst College and his M.D. from the USC School of Medicine, Dr. Drew was awarded the position of Chief Resident at a USC facility. Both a board-certified internist and addictionologist, Dr. Drew is also the Medical Director of the Department of Chemical Dependency Services at Pasadena’s Las Encinas Hospital and the Chief of Service in the Department of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Drew is the past President of the Pasadena Medical Society and the former editor of the Los Angeles County Medical Association magazine.”

Dr. Drew versus Tom Cruise, uneducated actor idiot. Oookay, yeah – Cruise is right, Drew’s a nazi. Never defend, always attack … 😆

  32. Donaldo says:

Cruise’s lawyer has resorted to the tired old Nazi fallacy, which means he has no other way of arguing his “logic”. Check this out”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum

  33. Ben says:

um laurie, I was supporting Dr Drew. Giving evidence that he DOES have some background on Tom Cruise and wasn’t just making baseless comments. I thought the fact that he had a medical degree was obvious to anyone who knows what “Dr.” stands for.

  34. WHY? says:

Have you ever wondered WHY?! all these
stars who profess to want to ‘save the
    world’…and are dripping money like
sweat in the Sahara…relish in making
the most deviant and violent flicks
possible? If Mr. Cruise “knows psychology”, then why doesn’t he stop
making movies that cause young people
    to emulate violent characters? Why
does he keep making movies that cause
    the viewers ‘psychological anxiety and
    sickness”???

    How do you define HYPOCRIT???

  35. lola says:

This Drew character wanted some controversy to raise his profile. I s Cruise the best example he can give when we have celebs who have been to mental institutions and wore vials of blood?

He will never even have the success Tom Cruise has in his little finger 😆

  36. lola says:

Dr.Drew is an actual doctor trained in the field of psychiatric medicine specializing in addictive personality disorders.

    _______________________________________

He better start acting like one. Real doctors are above such cheap stunts. 🙄

  37. lola says:

Now I know why this man attacked Tom Cruise, Scientology disses his profession and what better way to make people not listen to them than attack their poster boy. Pathetic that he could stoop to that.

  38. gg says:

Scientology disses psychology because psychology disproves it, and $ea Org knows that. The guy was simply doing an interview, and it’s now blown to epic proportions. Good. The more attention The Cult gets, the more people will wake up, and stop the organized crime and abuse.

    Pathetic is right. $$$$$

  39. Nan says:

Dr. Goebbels was the minister of propaganda. He was an ‘ardent diarist’. There are at least 10 books of his journals. Some of them were buried in a trunk on the side of the road, yet to be found. This is some of the best writings for some who have an obsession with all things ‘propaganda’. You will learn to see the propaganda in today’s current world by reading his diaries.

  40. Nan says:

Tom is bi polar with manic episodes. He’s sick and needs medication. Religion cannot cure chemical imbalances.

  41. lola says:

Nan, you are sick too if you think diagonising someone you have never met is ok. Tom hasn’t stopped you from taking your anti depressants. You don’t have to listen to him. This twat was out of line. That apology is not enough. I can’t wait to see him pay. He will pay!! 😈

  42. Kaiser/ Hippacrat says:

Hey, Lola – Will you still be against Dr. Pinsky knowing that he did talk negatively – er, “diagnose” – Jolie in the same Playboy interview?

    Is your world crashing down?

  43. sallysitwell says:

I was looking up information on therapy techniques for a paper and found a site with all these videos of people talking about how therapy had ruined their lives and things. I didn’t watched them, just kind of rolled my eyes. At first, I thought it was from some fundamentalist Christian group so I checked out the about. Oops, I should have known. Scientology at work again!

Scientology is, and always will be, a cult.

  44. loli says:

Dr. Drew did not make a definitive diagnose on Tom Cruise; he simply made an observation based on what he knew about Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise, on the other hand, made a definitive diagnosis on Brooke Shields, when all he knows about psychiatry is propaganda.

  45. lola says:

Kaiser, I would if Angelina had not been to a mental asylum for two weeks back in 1999 taken there by her own mother. Her father too thought she was mental, so did her ex husband BBT. Apart from a couple of videos out of context and couch jumping saying Cruise is insane is malicious and cheap. If all bad childhoods made people mental, then the whole of this country would be full of mentals. 🙄

  46. shut up, shut up, shut up!!! says:

why are you so obnoxiously obsessed with Jolie, lola? she is not the subject of this post. i wish doctor drew could diagnose you, you mental headcase. of course, since you’re probably locked away in the scientology compound, working the computers on “anti-scientology blog counterattack” detail, i guess he won’t be able to prescribe you the medication you so badly need.
