Billy Ray Cyrus talks about Miley’s Vanity Fair photos

Billy Ray Cyrus has talked about those pictures of daughter Miley. The Vanity Fair ones, not the myspace pictures of her with various boys and lifting up her shirt.

“I didn’t know they were gonna strip her down and wrap her in a blanket,” Cyrus told Meredith Vieira on “Today” Tuesday in New York, referring to the shot of his 15-year-old daughter taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz. In the photo, the “Hannah Montana” star appeared to be topless, covered only by a sheet she clutched to her chest.

Though Cyrus doesn’t approve of the photograph, which Leibovitz defended as “a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup,” he said that heeded his dad’s advice on the situation.

“My dad always told me the more you stomp in poop, the more it stinks,” Billy Ray said. “So I was just, ‘OK, this happened. We got to deal with it.’ ”

And what about that other photo of Miley in Billy Ray’s lap, which also raised more than a few eyebrows?

“That’s just a daddy who loves his daughter a whole lot,” Billy Ray explained, laughing off the question about the pose that Vieira thought made them look like more like girlfriend and boyfriend.

Los Angeles Times

I know a lot of people think Miley should have been more carefully supervised at the photo shoot, but you don’t drop your 15-year-old daughters off to work as babysitters and supervise their shift, maybe they were trying to give their daughter some normalcy at work. Posing for photos and publicity is what she does for a living to promote her show and music.

I also thought that the pictures of Billy Ray and his daughter were nice. The matching clothes bothered me, not the pose. I think anyone that suggests that there is something inappropriate in their relationship is way out of line, particularly when it is based on a photograph.

Any photographers working with Miley in the future are probably going to give the Cyrus camp the power of veto over what gets published.

  2. Hillbillies! You can just tell Miley will age poorly. Imagine what the parenthesis will look like around her mouth if she doesn’t get them fixed by age 20!

  3. Now I’m not saying that there is anything inappropriate with their relationship. I just think that the pose and clothing are fairly proactive. But who know what it might be like for them. When you are marketing a 15 year old you are bound to cross boundaries that in a larger social context would probably be deemed inappropriate.

  4. Miley should ease up or we will have another Britney on our hands. One is enough in our life time.

  5. Sorry, Helen but I disagree with nearly everything you write, particularly this. A modeling shoot is not a babysitting job. Plus, it may have been some time ago but I don’t recall anyone questioning their relationship from the pic. Many of us just found the picture more representative of a bf/gf than father/daughter.

  6. Yeah, agree, that was never the issue. It was the suggestive nature of some of the pics; if you didn’t know who they were, you’d have assumed bf&gf, not father and daughter. Also, I think everything that needed to be said about this whole story was said at the time of the shoot.

  7. Victoria: Miley is a attention-seeking whore, fullstop.

And you have the Disney corporation to thank for foisting her image upon the public consciousness. Blame the disease at its source- not the girl.

  8. I actually agree wholeheartedly with Helen, particularly about the father-daughter pose. I think the people who are reading things into the poses are the pervs, not Billy Ray. It’s like, ew, sickos, why do you look at a father and daughter that way?

  11. I think the ick factor of the father/daughter pics is due to the way she is posed - why does her shirt have to be hiked up and her hips thrust forward? A portrait with her dad wasn’t a good place to try to inject a little sexy, if they’d have kept her shirt on properly and sat her up a bit there’d be no issue. Just my two cents.

  12. Jaundice Machine:

    So very, very, creepy . . .

I love my daddy very much, but no amount of money could ever persuade me to pose with my head near his crouch, my hips thrust forward suggestively, or my mouth wiiiiide open.

    Creepy.

  13. I think that miley is making a mistake  by making a show that was basicly made for children If she couldn’t take it. She know that one day she was going to be older and not want to be know as the little girl from disney channel

Well all i have to say is if you dont want the show any more then take it off air beuase i have a little sister that looks up to you :?:

  14. Miley has the right to do whatever the hell she wants, it’s her life and her choice. And to all of you retards who are concerned about your younger family members looking up to her…how about you just don’t let them watch her show anymore and stop bitching about it. If you all were actually good paretns you simply wouldn’t let your kids watch her show since you’re that concerned about her exposed back!

  15. I kind of lean both ways on this issue really. Miley is just a 15 year old girl, you as we can may have made some mistakes, but hell she 15, and who is really perfect anyway, I made mistakes at her age, there are kids out there doing far worse things. I do agree she should make wiser decisions because she is in the public eye, by choice she knew what that entitled. As for the picture with her dad, its a good picture, I agree the shirt should have stayed down lower, and then it would have been a great pic. THe second picture is adorable, nothing wrong with it, it looks like a daughter laughing at her older, and sometimes embarrassing father. As Miley gets older hopefully she will mature more and make better choices. Thats all that we can hope.
