Angelina Jolie actually called a “saint” by Bosnian refugees

wenn8913631

First – these are new photos of Angelina Jolie in Budapest yesterday, while she worked on her feature directorial debut, which is still untitled. Question: Is she drinking coffee from a Budapest McDonalds? Anyway, the print edition of Us Weekly has the funniest sycophantic story about Angelina Jolie this week. Back in April, Angelina and Brad visited Bosnia as part of an official UNHCR goodwill mission. They traveled to refugee camps and met with people who have been refugees for more than a decade. Shortly after their trip, a number of the refugees they had visited were granted a $500,000 housing donation courtesy of the United States government. Coincidence… or sainthood?

The next Mother Teresa! For years, Angelina Jolie has won praise for her humanitarian work, but the 15 residents of a Bosnian refugee camp took it upon themselves to canonize her, calling her “Saint Angelina”.

Why the honor? They say her April visit prompted a $500,000 US government donation to house them after the region’s war in the 1990s left them homeless.

“Is it not a miracle that she came to give me an apartment?” Goran Markovic asks Us Weekly.

Radomir Jovicic, mayer of Rogatica, tells Us he spent years lobbying but only got the funds after Jolie and Brad Pitt toured the refugee camp. Adds camp resident Borka Mandzo, “I’d kiss her feet.”

[From Us Weekly, print edition]

Look, as I’ve said many times, I admire Angelina enormously for her UNHCR work, and for the time and money she gives. She raises awareness and raises money, and the profile of international refugee crises is raised by her work. But these refugees should really give a little more of the credit to America as a whole, right? Sure, maybe the government wouldn’t have given the money if Angelina and Brad hadn’t made the trip and brought the ongoing Bosnian refugee issue into the news – but the government was the one to give the money.

One last thing – Saint Angelina certainly has a cute leading man, right? Damn.

    I don’t think she’s a saint but I’d still kiss her feet if she’d let me! 🙂

  2. devilgirl says:

    *peeks in, backs out slowly*

  3. DD says:

Yes that is one cute leading man 😉 and Angelina is looking really cute and happy in these photos.

  4. DD says:

lol devilgirl, it’s too early to engage in war. I think things are still safe in here.

  5. Miss says:

    Oh pleeease.

  6. mln says:

Uhm I love her,but she isn’t a saint. I think they were just using that as an expression. Also, although US gov’t gave the money it’s been a long time since the war ended and it took Angie to advocate for them. I don’t think they would have gotten the help from the gov’t without her.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

    Me to Sarah…I am jk…mmmmmmmmmaybe

I find it really hard to believe US Weekly has actual reporters in a 3rd world countries or overseas. I just think its bullsh*t. They are gonna make up the story and put their own spin on things anyway, why would anyone believe they actually sent someone there to do an interview. Its all lies.

The lead actor is effing stunning. OMG soo hawt. Can’t wait to hear more about him.

  8. Mairead says:

@DD oh no, Devilgirl is right to proceed with caution. This sort of thing regularly becomes a horror show. Shall we start taking bets on the most regular, and ideally unsupported comments? I place €10 on “She hates America” being used in one of its forms at least once.

On the subject itself – this sort of thing sticks in my craw. In the past when I’ve dealt with grants, the people who were entitled to them got them, and got as much as could be spared. And the process was made as easily as possible for them. But you’d get politicians coming in with their representations that only caused more work and had no blasted effect in the end. But you had to sit through the clients singing their praises. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve lots of time for most local representatives especially as I know how much hard work they do – but there are limits. I’m just imagining this/these civil servants processing the payments and making tough decisions on who to support and by how much, and sod all thanks there is for them.

  9. sharylmj says:

If that trip did spark the funds to be given.. then GOOD JOB!! that’s why she does what she does and raises awareness. It’s her goal to help these people. Looks like she’s getting something accomplished. She puts a lot of time and effort into her humanitarian causes. It’s probably nice for her to actually see some tangible results. I hope she continues with her good works of compasion. GOD BLESS Angelina and Brad and anyone who is trying to help others and make a difference.

  10. Praise St. Angie! says:

so, some people are appreciative – that’s a good thing, right?

…yes, calling someone a “saint” is usually an exaggeration, but haven’t we all referred to someone by that term at some point?

like “she’s a saint for putting up with him” type of thing? I know I have…

but more importantly, is McD’s coffee any good? never had any as I’m a Dunkin’ Donuts kind of girl…

  11. mln says:

@Love Angelina actually it is very easy for them to pick up local stories. I think the fact that they are quoting the mayor of the town and not “sources” means it is less likely to be bullshit. It could be as simple as them reprinting an article from a local newspaper that came up on the wire. I am pretty sure Hungary isn’t a 3rd world country.

  12. DD says:

I surprisingly love McDy’s coffee. They switched brands many years ago and since then the coffee has tasted much better. Lol Mairead, I can go ahead and make a list of how this thread will derail… but I don’t want to be accused of starting it. I will double bet you something along the lines of : Look how much happier she looks in these photos when Brad’s not around!

  13. Roxanne75 says:

    She dresses like a nerd.

  14. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Uhhh MLN Us Weekly will quote the family dog saying it saw Zee beating up Pax. Just because they typed someone said this or that doesn’t make it true. I can’t count how many countless times they have claimed to have spoken with someone. Unless you have seen this officially reported by the AP or another accredited news source its MORE likely BS. I wasn’t talking about Hungary being a 3rd World Country, I was talking about Bosnia, which some consider a 3rd world country from what I have read anyway.

  15. BethL says:

It’s amazing that no matter what Angelina does or in this case doesn’t do it gets blownup a thousand times. The saint comment is probably just an exaggeration. People say somebody is a saint or angel all of the time but because Angelina is involved it’ supposed to be taken literally.

I haven’t tried it but McDonald’s switched to Newmans Own a few years ago and supposedly the coffee is much better.

  16. mln says:

this article has the same basic facts quotes the mayor and lists AP news as its source.
The information has been out there for a week or so US Weekly just picked it up and didn’t credit the AP.

  17. teri says:

I like Angelina alot but I don’t consider her a saint. She’s never addressed herself as being one, far from it, but to me she has a heart of gold. Angelina walks the walk and talks the talk I guess that’s why I like her. For the people wanting to make a stink of it Mother Teresa worked endlessly towards the sick and poverty and wasn’t given the proper attention when she passed it was Princess Diana who recieved that honor for whatever reason.

  18. spinner says:

I don’t know about sainthood but she sure is a walking skeleton. Yikes!!

  19. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Thanks MLN for the link. I do notice that Us Weekly added in the “I’d kiss her feet” line which isn’t in the article you posted or the one I found from searching the AP website.

    http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_BOSNIA_ANGELINA_JOLIE?SITE=DEWIL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Also how fu*king shady is that Us Weekly pretended they were there talking to the residents and interviewing them when they weren’t even there and stole a story from another news source. Disgusting. Can trust a freaking tabloid I tell ya.

  20. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Again, BARF!

She gave out pot brownies and told everyone that was her name… SAINT.

    LOL

  21. Cheyenne says:

@Love Angelina: USWeekly makes shit up but they are nowhere near as bad as Star, OK, Life & Style or In Touch. They’re all tabloids; inventing bullshit goes with the territory. Nobody with half a brain would take any of them seriously anyway.

  22. mln says:

According to this article US Weekly has the highest overall accuracy at 59% with a 35% cover accuracy
    http://gawker.com/5638480/which-tabloids-lie-the-most
the caveat is that the brangelina story has a lower accuracy for all tabs http://gawker.com/5638479/
Again there are usually tells when a story is absolutely false or kind of sorta true, or real. The tell in this story is that the mayor of the town(a public official who could be contacted) is named as opposed to the ever present ‘sources’ .

Why drink McDonald’s coffee in Budapest? The coffeehouses have much better coffee!

  25. Jeannified says:

Is that the guys “costume” or is it what he wqears every day? This IS Bossnia, after all. That jacket looks like a girls AND like it’s too small (short) for him. Poor guy!

  26. OtherChris says:

She looks great here. She always looks better w/out makeup.

  27. Faye says:

I agree with OtherChris. She looks good.

  28. ghostbuster says:

the title made me laugh. i think she does great things and brings awareness where ever she goes. i do wonder if she laughs at herself when people call her a saint. hopefully she does and not let it fill her head 🙂

  29. Jeri says:

Saint. Angies’s been telling us this for years.

  30. You're An Idiot says:

This has got to be the dumbest Jolie-Pitt post on this site in months. First of all, the US government didn’t just wake up one day and decide to give this particular group of refugess half a million sawbucks. They got the money because Jolie lobbied Congress on SPECIFICALLY on behalf of this particular set of refugees because she was told about their inability to secure funding for housing when she and Pitt were there in April.

Secondly, the guy Jolie is talking to in the picture isn’t the leading man. Goran Kostic is blond and older. Stop believing everything in the photo agencies’ blurbs. Duh.

  31. lu says:

He kinda looks like Christian Bale, doesn’t he?

  32. happygirl says:

I agree that she does great things with UNHCR, and that’s awesome. But a SAINT? Are you kidding? She broke up a marriage just like LeAnn Rimes did, and we bash LeAnn all day long. Don’t get me wrong, I know they are NOT the same person, by a long shot, but I think people tend to put Angelina on a pedistal for some reason. Love her movies…but I just don’t get it. **Just my opinion**

  33. mln says:

@happygirl LeeAnn Rimes broke up a longterm relationship that lasted 13 years and involved children. There reason to believe Brad and Jen had a lot of problems BEFORE Angie (and all three of them have denied there was any actual affair). And since there were no children involved there is not one reason why Jen or her fans can’t move on by now from whatever did or didn’t happen 6 years ago.
And no Angie isn’t a Saint but I do think helping refugees and devoting herself to humanitarian work does trump the triangle B.S.

  34. postaldog says:

Honestly, with the Angie bashing. After seeing what a pathetic mess Jen’s become, is there any reason why we should be second guessing Brad’s decision to leave? He’s happier with Angie, get over it.
And the ambassador stuff — I suppose Angie could just sit around Hollywood like a self-entitled bitch and whine and preen like 99.9% of the other “stars” there. But no, she goes out and does real humanitarian work, as does Brad. They don’t have to, but they do, and the fact that they keep it fairly low-key shows that it isn’t simply a publicity thing. So quit your hating. jeez

  35. Camille says:

😆 Hilarious, cute story. Love her though, but the girl is no saint lol.

  36. happygirl says:

@#33 (sorry, your name is over the number and I can’t read it)…totally agree with you about the kids. And I’m not a Jennifer Aniston fan. My apologies, I read an interview at some point that Brad actually finally admitted they had an affair while he was still married. I wasn’t trying to compare LeAnn & Angie as people, just trying to make a point that while she does a ton of humanitarian work (which I agree is selfless and much needed), she does do things that aren’t saint-like. Wasn’t trying to upset anyone…just wrote what came to mind.

  37. mln says:

@happygirl the name is mln, no worries I don’t take this stuff too seriously. And I agree she isn’t a saint, just a person who does good work with her vast resources.

  38. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Praise: The actual coffee is still a little weird and crappy but the fun mocha, caramel and sugary stuff they do with coffee is like crack.

And it is great that she managed to lobby the government for some funds but I agree with Mairead. She might have started the ball rolling on it but the actual people who ok’d it and got the money distributed properly and through the proper channels are not being thanked.

Angelina Jolie is not a senator or house committee member or someone who decides how the US government’s money gets spent. All she did was bring it to the attention of some people in Washington who had to do the real leg work and paper-filing. And it’s great that she brought attention to it, but let’s thank the people who really did the work.

  39. kiki says:

@happygirl. When did Brad admit to an affair? I don’t remember that?

What I do know is that he told Jen he was attracted to Angie. That’s what Courtney Cox told the press. Sure, it’s hurtful, but it’s not an affair when you tell your spouse you want out.

And, how long can people hold a grudge? It’s been like 6 yrs and 5 kids ago. I agree Angie’s no saint, but she does some good with her time.

  40. happygirl says:

    @ mln – agreed 🙂
@#39 (my computer is f’d so I can’t read the names)…I can’t remember exactly, just that he let it “slip” after denying it for so long that they were actually seeing each other while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. And if they didn’t have an affair, then I agree. I also agree it’s just as easy to tell your spouse you want out BEFORE you cheat. (Again…all hearsay..who really knows). I’m not holding a grudge, I know it’s been a long time, just saying she’s not perfect, that’s all. And I do think she’s come a long way since her self-admitted darker days and has made a positive impact in the world. Not trying to hate. LOL

  41. BIte me says:

Right he let I’d slip… I heard he let it slip that aniston was really born a man and that’s y they divorced (kanyeshrug)

  42. Kim says:

He never admitted having an affair with Angie before the split. RS asked what his fav film he said MMS because he fell in love on that one .In LA Times Mag he mentioned that they were still filming re shoots for MMS after he and Jen separated in Jan 2005.Did they have a relationship before the divorce was final of course but so did Jen and Vince.

  43. Tawana says:

The pope or someone should make Ange a saint already. What are people waiting for?

  44. I Choose Me says:

    Nice sh*t-stirring Kaiser 😀
I know, I know you just report the news and I love you for it. Seriously though, anyone know who’s the hottie in the tan jacket with the dimples? I’d love to know more about him.

*settles back to enjoy the crazy on this thread*

Edit: Wow, gotta say so far, so tame. Could it be? Are people finally over this TEAM nonsense or are we just all bored and eager for HGF? 🙂

  45. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

I Choose Me: HOT GUY FRIDAY!!!!

  46. roguesiren says:

I’m not even touching this one today.
*Door hits ass on way out*

  47. Mairead says:

I know, I Choose Me – they just don’t breed ’em as completely hatstand as they used to (remember nan, Snowblood and Lola?)

  48. Cheyenne says:

@happygirl and mln: How do you single-handedly break up a marriage, children or no children? If Brad wanted to be with his ex-wife, he’d still be with her. But he didn’t, and he isn’t.

@postaldog: Thanks for a very intelligent post, but I’d better warn you there are a few haters on here who would say it’s all Angelina’s fault that Brad’s ex-wife has become a pathetic mess. As if she was a Barbie doll with no mind or will of her own.

  49. hopeso says:

Speaking as one of her biggest fan, in my eyes she iiiiiisssssssss.

  50. Kim says:

Sad because they are getting fame and money mixed up with being a “saint.” Im glad they got homes but sad that it took someone famous to go there for them to get them.

  51. Newbie says:

    ugh.

  52. Bobby the K says:

I guess the saint thing is all relative. Maybe for these people who had their lives blown apart from war and who still continue to suffer, she is something like a saint.

It’s again funny how we tolerate so much hate and let it slide when people are called satan or hitler and never called out for it.

She’s flawed like everyone, but i expect would be a great conversationalist, interesting, creative etc.

I never noticed how long her fingers are.

  53. mln says:

@Cheyenne I never said anyone single handedly broke up a marraige. I think LeAnn Rimes got involved with a married man who was already cheating on his wife and because of her narcissism had no concern for either her husband or EC’s wife or most importantly the children and handled the situation in the worst way possible.
I said was it was unfair to compare her to Angelina Jolie because the situations were not at all alike.

  54. Sara says:

Look, I know too much sun is very bad for you, but some sun every day is important for Vitamin D which is responsible for so many physiological mechanisms in the body. These pasty white celebrities need a little sun, its called a healthy glow for a reason. I am not saying to suntan all the time, but a little sun every day isn’t dangerous and in fact very healthy.
