Carey Mulligan declared ‘Best Dressed of 2010’ – does she deserve the title?

wenn5440926

Carey Mulligan was just named the “Best Dressed Woman of the Year” by Harper’s Bazaar UK. I believe the list is just made up of British women, or women who live in England, because the list is funky as all hell. The second best dressed woman was Victoria Beckham. The third best dresses was Yasmin Le Bon, whose name I haven’t heard in years. And of course, the list included people like Alexa Chung (gag), Sienna Miller (boo) and Stella McCartney (hack). No Americans, from what I can see.

Now… amongst all of the British girls who could have conceivably “won” this title, would you pick Carey Mulligan? I wouldn’t. I like her red carpet looks sometimes, but you can tell she’s totally still finding her style, and wants to be able to be funky and eclectic, even though she also wants to be polished and smart-looking. You can also tell – from interviews she’s given – that she has mixed feelings about people caring about her clothes. She wants to be An Actress, not a Fashion Girl. She does not want to be Jessica Alba, or Sienna Miller, or someone who is just known for walking red carpets.

Good thing, too, because in my opinion, Carey is still learning and making sketchy fashion choices. Remember the mullet dress she wore to the Oscars? Remember the mullet dress she wore to the BAFTAs?!? Remember the Charlie Brown frock she wore just a few weeks ago? None of it was horrible, granted, and she’s still cute as a button, but she still has a ways to go. Now, I’m not saying every younger girl has to wander around jacked like Megan Fox – I’m really not saying that. But Carey should try some cleaner looks, and leave the fussy old-lady gowns and mullet dresses in the trash – if I was her stylist, I would be putting her in lots of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Narciso Rodriguez.

Talk about poor and lack of taste.

  2. carrie says:

i know her since only one year and i yet am tired of her and her style(dull)

  3. flourpot says:

Yikes! Most of those outfits are hideous.

  4. Mingy says:

what! i mean shes cute and all but.. no way…

  5. Hautie says:

The only dress that I don’t care for is the white one with the red/black stripe on it. And those shoes are too much for it.

Otherwise I don’t see any truly tragic dresses here.

In all the other dresses… she is wearing things that fit. None of them are trash-tastic hooker clothes. No boobs hanging out or flashing anyone her panties. I like all the shoes paired with the dresses.

She looks cute and doesn’t seem like any of the clothes are wearing her… if that makes any kind of sense.

So I can see why she made the list. And as long as Victoria Beckham and her ridiculous pose-harding… didn’t make the #1 spot. I can live with it. 🙂

I agree that Carey is only just finding her style. Most of the time, the clothes wear her. She mostly looks like a little girl wearing her mommie’s dresses. They overwhelmed her. She has more misses than hits. Off the red carpet, she dresses like an ordinary young woman without much style or awareness. That pixie haircut doesn’t do much for her either.

I’m sure she will find her style eventually but she’s just not there yet.

  7. Donna Wingfield says:

What did the Worst- Dressed woman wear? These choices are bad!

  8. kelBear says:

    This is a joke right?

  9. bellaluna says:

    Um. No. No, she doesn’t.

  10. devilgirl says:

I think her style suits her, and if that is what gets you Best Dressed, then I guess she deserves it. Do I personally like her style? No. I would never wear most of the styles she does, but it works for her.

  11. D says:

I love her style. It’s nice to see someone her age NOT trying to look like a tramp or Stepford wife.

  12. Marjalane says:

I don’t understand most of her choices; She’s such a petite girl and most of her dresses look way too big on her. BUT, I really like her and she’s much more interesting than your basic vanilla cover starlet. (can you say Jessica Biel?)

  13. serena says:

    um, not really.
She’s cute, she dress nicely but she’s absolutely NOT the best dressed. And some of the outfits up in the pics can demonstrate it.

  14. Emily says:

I think she looks great. And I love, love her new hair color.

Though all stars should take note not to do the foot cross pose in long dresses because it looks like her feet are on backwards in that last photo!

  15. Jean says:

I find Carey Mulligan to be a breath of fresh air and think she deserves the title.
I do not get the hoopla about Victoria Beckham though. Have you seen her before she hired a stylist? She took WAG-style to new extremes.
I cannot take that woman seriously, and every time I hear or read about her “fashion line”, I have to wonder which designer she knocked off this time.

  16. chris says:

I’ve seen her look lovely. These pics are awful though.

  17. kiko says:

    hell no!!

  18. spooge says:

TINY HEAD. TINY HEAD. TINY HEAD!!!

  19. roguesiren says:

As much as I love Carey Mulligan, I don’t think she deserved the title. I guess the British didn’t have much to pick from. The only stylish Brit I ever see in print is Victoria Beckham. Other than that, they don’t have too many choices. I like Liz Hurley (even though she’s always flashing boobs). The WAGS from across the pond are not stylish or classy at all.

  20. Deeta says:

That is what a good PR agent does for his/her client

  21. terryo says:

Bet she has perky boobs! She should show more flesh!

  22. Kristin says:

    stop hating

  23. Stronzilla says:

When you consider her competition she wins hands down. Who wants conformist fashion? Considering other women her age dress, with hem and neckline meeting in the middle, she’s postiviely puritanical! Besides, ya gotta love a chick who can hang at the Best Western because she likes their sweet potato fries.

  24. Amanda says:

I think she has beautiful style. Her choices are unique and different. I liked the black mullet dress! Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren for Carey Mulligan? Oh, no, no.

  25. Nanea says:

I like Carey a lot because she never comes across as trying too hard, but Best Dressed?

    Uh no.

  26. Brooke says:

I am still not sold on her. While she looks cute from time to time, those occasions are more a fluke than anything. Whoever styles her seems determined to make Vionnet happen (but it’s not on the cards, I’m afraid) and when that fails, they just stick her in a Prada/Miu Miu frock and style it f-cked in an effort to appear edgy. Maybe this award is for being a try-hard? It sort of makes more sense that way, what with VB at No. 2.

  27. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    She’s covered, I appreciate that.

    That is all.

  28. lu says:

I don’t know anything about fashion but she is cute.

  29. Tammy says:

Keira Knightley is the best dressed Brit!

  30. original kate says:

i like her style, but best dressed? hmmmm. oh well, at least she is always well groomed and wearing undies.

  31. Sally G says:

She’s adorable! I think her style is edgy without trying too hard, and very fashion forward. I think she has a great future in film; she strikes me as a true original.

  32. Marianne says:

I like her style, its cute and quirky. Plus she always look classy. I wouldn’t say that she was “The Best Dressed”, but she definitely not one of the worst dressed.

  33. Kazoo81 says:

    her face bothers me.

  34. Ally says:

I just guessed that title would have been granted by Harper’s Bazaar or Vogue. Their stock in trade is kissing designers’, um, rings, and hawking $4,000-$10,000 dresses. Naturally, they would bestow the title on the youngest, skinniest & most willing girl to slap on any such dress, regardless of its attractiveness generally or on on her. Mulligan’s look in eveningwear would be better suited to a Park Avenue fiftysomething dowager. Congrats on being a fashion victim, Carey!

  35. DrM says:

I like her style…a lot. Not many women can get away with that ‘severe’ hairstyle (having had short hair for YEARS I am not putting that as an insult…) and those quirky kinds of clothes. Most Interestingly Dressed yes…and I would say Best as well in many ways. It is nice to see someone who dresses with imagination…

  36. Anti-icon says:

We must have the same stylist, ’cause I agree with everything you said. She shows Enormous fashion sense. But first and foremost, she is an actress…with style and flair.

British women with good style: Helen Mirren, of course.

  37. cruiz2 says:

Best dressed? I don’t care – I like her! She’ll figure it out.

  38. mimi says:

No she doesn’t deserve the title at all! She dresses in frocks fit for an older woman most of the time…Why is Kate Winslet not #!? She’s looked so fantastic this year traipsing around with her new boyfriend!!!
