Natalie Portman in Lanvin at the Governors Awards: gorgeous or tired?

Last night was the Governors Awards, the awards ceremony for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ – the technical Oscars, basically. They’ve started doing this ceremony earlier, and they’ve really started encouraging bigger stars to come out for their behind-the-scenes crews and teams. It’s nice. Coincidentally, this could be the reason why there was only B and C-Listers at the MoCA event – all of the A-listers were at the technical Oscars. Anyway, Natalie Portman was one of the bigger stars there, and she decided to go for a much more “wintery” look, as opposed to her strange Easter look for last week’s Black Swan premiere. I really love the color on this Lanvin – it pops, and I have to give it to Natalie: she isn’t afraid of color, and for the most part, she sticks to the jewel tones that compliment her coloring very well.

Shoe porn – but it’s bridesmaid-y because the shoe matches EXACTLY. Also, I think Natalie has a planter’s wart? UPDATE: Wow, you bitches know a lot about planter’s warts (insert warty side eye). Yes, it probably is a blister.

Other fashionable women – Marisa Tomei wearing curtains from the 1970s. I mean, Vivienne Westwood. Damn, I guess this dress was even too ugly for Helena Bonham-Carter.

Don’t even ask me what Hilary Swank is doing. I have no idea. The dress is Marchesa. Ugh. She really needs a new stylist, stat.

Diane Lane & Josh Brolin. Diane and Heather Graham are wearing variations on the same dress. It looks like the same fabric too! Ugh.

Jesse Eisenberg & Andrew Garfield, just thrilled that they get to go to one industry event without Justin Timberlake chattering incessantly about his potential Oscar nomination.

I don’t know exactly what’s happening in this photo, but I know Sam Rockwell is f-cking me with his eyes.

Natalie has been a little off key in her dress choices but they aren’t horrible just not as good as usual. However, Ryan Gossling is SO hot and his mom looks good too.

  2. Praise St. Angie! says:

love the color, but not the style, of Portman’s dress. I like that the shoes match, but she needs to buy shoes that fit her. look at that gap between her heel and the back of the shoe!

nice Godfather reference…funny story, the priest at my church is named Tom Hagen. and yes, we DO call him “the consiglieri”.

  3. Rianna says:

Can we discuss how Heather Graham never ages?!?!? She always looks so incredibly great. Natalie Portman’s dress is fine…I think gold shoes would have been better. She was INSANELY good in “Black Swan.” Girl locked herself the Oscar.

  4. photo jojo says:

I think she looks great, but the shoes look WAY too big for her feet.

Side note – when did George Lucas turn into Jabba the Hut?

  5. sara says:

Not a plantar wart on Natalie’s foot. Looks more like psoriasis or another similar condition. The plantar is the sole of the foot, and plantar warts are invisible though painful and hard to remove. They’re embedded deep in the plantar and have to be gradually burned off with acid most of the time.

Please stop with the speculation about people’s possible medical problems unless you check out your guesses. Spreading medical misinformation is…yeah, uncool.

  6. LolaBella says:

I like the color of Natalie’s dress but not the dress itself.

Diane Lane looks classy as always; love her dress.

Elle Fanning’s dress is very cute and age appropriate.

I actually like Marisa Tomei’s dress.

  7. Carrie says:

The color of the dress is lovely- Natalie does look great in deep jewel tones.

As for her feet- I’m surprised they are not more jacked after all the ballet she did for Black Swan.

The poster above who suggested gold shoes was right on- gold would look better. But Natalie is known for her assy taste in shoes (and her hideous vegan line of them).

  8. GeekChic says:

Sorry to be a geek (can’t help it, and it is in my username, after all), but it called a “plantar wart,” not “planter’s.” They are named for the fact that they tend to be located on the plantar surface of the foot (the sole of the foot). Not so sure that’s a wart on her foot — looks to me more like a callus or abrasion of some sort.

And wow, Heather Graham looks stunning. ITA with Rianna that she never seems to age.

  9. Strawberry says:

Kaiser: re Natalie’s “wart” – looks to me like a badly healed blister.

  10. Jen D says:

That’s Ryan Gosling’s mother?! She could easily pass as his sister.

  11. gabs says:

“Jesse Eisenberg & Andrew Garfield, just thrilled that they get to go to one industry event without Justin Timberlake chattering incessantly about his potential Oscar nomination.”

LOL. I hope justin not being there means the academy realizes hes not worthy. It reminds me of when Beyonce thought her crap acting in dreamgirls was gonna get her an oscar too.

Ryan Gosling is so adorable to take his mom! aweee

  12. Ron says:

I like Natalie’s look–would love to see if from the back. Hilary Swank looks like she was being attacked in a ribbon factor and ran. WTF?

  13. Carrie says:

Speaking of Ryan Gosling and his mother, do you remember when he was on Ellen and talked about taking his mother to the Oscars?

If you haven’t seen it, you must: he’s charming and funny and has a great Meryl Streep story.

Dorffism: Ability to create an optical illusion that one is not diminutive, as long as one avoids teens, small directors, and items with well-known form factors, such as iPhones, DVDs, and Swingline 747 staplers.

  15. dj says:

Diane Lane and Heather Graham are gorgeous in red and schooling the younger ladies at this event. Looking good. Elle Fanning looks great as in NOT looking like a 40 year old stripper (Thank God) when she’s 14 or whatever.

  16. serena says:

Gosh, Elle Fanning is so cute..
Anyway, yes, Natalie looks tired but her dress is beautiful.

  17. normades says:

Natalie: you should never exactly match your dress to your shoes unless you’re a bridesmaid.
Gosling: Man can this guy wear a suit or what!!!!??? HOTTTTTTT

  18. Mia says:

Natalie has a shoe problem. I know she’s vegan & therefore wears non-leather shoes, but damnit…wear the correct size!

Elle Fanning is going to be a stunner. I love how she dresses. Age-appropriate, but still stylish.

  19. Raven says:

Some of these are just bad photos. For example, that looks like a beautiful dress on Patricia Clarkson, but that pose makes her look funny. Same with Sharon Stone’s dress.

Hillary Swank looks like a giant Christmas present. It’s too bad that she has never developed taste. Natalie Portman’s dress had real potential, but it fits so badly. It hangs funny as well and makes me think that she was belted wrong.

Heather Graham and Diane Lane both look stunning. And I agree that Heather never looks like she ages.

Tony Bennett and Eli Wallach. They alone would have made the event worth attending.

  20. girl says:

Stephen Dorff looks like he accidentally got locked in the tanning bed or something.

Is Natalie Portman’s dress really not hemmed? I don’t know if that is normal when people wear designer dresses but that seems weird.

  21. Amy says:

“I don’t know exactly what’s happening in this photo, but I know Sam Rockwell is f-cking me with his eyes.”

    Love it. Love him!

  22. lucy2 says:

I like Natalie and Diane’s dresses. Hilary Swank’s is not good.

I can’t wait to see Black Swan, looks really good.

  23. Taurus says:

@Carrie thanks for the clip! Now I really wanna marry him. Ryan is so hot and charming.

    MJ FOR HGF!

  24. Tess says:

Plantar’s Wart Trivia: Duct tape, believe it or not, is all you need to treat it. Keep the wart covered with clean, dry duct tape, which deprives it of oxygen, and the wart dies in a couple of weeks.

No doctor, no high tech treatment needed.

Regarding Portman, I think the color is a little too intense for her and drains her natural coloring.

  25. Mingy says:

dont like natalies dress at all

  26. bagladey says:

I love Natalie Portman but her dress is bleh and that sure looks like a plantar wart on her foot. I do like Marisa Tomei’s dress, Heather Graham looks gorgeous and Justin Long is smokin’; he seems to be getting better looking as he gets older.

  27. maria says:

It looks like Natalie borrowed the dress and matching shoes from someone larger. Neither fit her.

I like crazy Sharon’s dress – pretty and classic.

I love Sophia’s shoes, but they look kinda casual for this event.

  28. Amanda says:

    Heather Graham looks amazing!

  29. kate 2.0 says:

    I didn’t know Dorff was a f***ing midget

  30. kelly says:

Heather Gs hair looks fucking brilliant! Sometimes a slightly whack colour really does things for people, and that’s a great example. I actually love both versions of that dress too.
Portman looks just okay; it IS too bridesmaidy, the whole darn thing. The bodice looks a bit old ladyish.
Shouldn’t Elle Fanning be in bed by now??? What is she, twelve or some shit?

  31. B says:

@ “Dr.” Sara. Thanks for your omniscient medicinal insight. *Eyeroll* Perhaps the definitions for ‘geek’ and ‘ego’ are transposed in your medical dictionary.

    P.S. Heather Graham seems like she’s a she-douche, IMO, Heather’s Eve.

  32. Dannnii says:

She may have gotten another nose job….her face looks different, and not just some restylane here & there different.
I like the dress and she wears it well but the colour does not suit her skin tone at all. That’s the problem.

  33. Ferguson. says:

    tired.

dont like the dress, dont like the shoes.

  34. Alexa says:

I LOVE Hilary Swank regardless of her fashion hits or misses! Her talent and spirit supersede any potential fashion faux pas. There is just no way she can look bad in my eyes. She RULES!

I actually like Marisa Tomei’s dress on her — looks very chic, and the bangles add to the high fashion look.

  35. I Choose Me says:

Sam Rock looks smoking hot in his tux and I’m so loving his ginger-ish beard. Love Diane Lane’s dress and the way it drapes – fabulous!

  36. Crash says:

I really don’t get the appeal of Natalie Portman. I’m sorry. I keep reading about how “gorgeous” she is…but I just don’t see it. Average pretty. Non-descript. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?
