Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman on Oprah: too sappy or just sweet?

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were on Oprah yesterday, and I think recent coverage of the slightly additional movement in Nicole’s face has been accurate. She still looked like a delicate porcelain doll. Both Nicole and Keith have projects to promote, with Nicole promoting her new movie Rabbit Hole, out in limited release December 17 in the US, and Keith promoting his upcoming album, Get Closer, out November 16. They each said some very emotional, personal things about each other and their daughter Sunday Rose, two, and I was struck by how alike they are. I’ve found Nicole to be affected and overly flowery, but she seems to have met her match in Keith. They come across as deeply in love and more than willing to share it with the world. Here’s some of what they told Oprah. Keith also read a love note to Nicole, which is included in his CD liner notes:

Keith on how Nicole saved him from addiction early in their marriage
Reality hit home when Nicole and a few close friends staged at intervention for Keith. “It was really a profound moment in so many ways. Then, the way in which Nic handled that moment was just perfect,” Keith says. “Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together.”

At first, Keith says he questioned whether he should go to rehab so soon after getting married. “[I thought], ‘Surely let’s give it a few years so we’ve got some solidity, because this kind of thing could tear us apart,'” Keith says. “‘This could just destroy us.'”

Ultimately, he decided it was time to get help. Keith left the same night as the intervention for treatment. “I just said, ‘I don’t want to do anything but go,'” he says. “I didn’t care about anything else.”

On how Nicole opened his heart
Early in his relationship with Nicole, Keith says they went to a park. While sitting on a bench, he says he asked her, “How’s your heart?”

“I didn’t know why I asked that question,” Keith says. “I’d never asked anybody that before. I don’t know what answer I was expecting.”

She answered, “It’s open.”

“It was not only beautiful because it said so much about her, but it instantly made me ask myself: ‘Is mine? Is my heart open?'” Keith says. “‘Or is it 80 percent open, but I’ve got a little exit strategy? If I do, then why is that?'”

As anyone who’s ever loved and lost knows, once you’ve had your heart broken, it’s hard to love again. For this reason, Keith says he was scared. “I looked back and realized that I stayed in this pattern because I wasn’t really loving,” he says. “I hadn’t met the right person. I wasn’t the right person, but I wasn’t really giving myself fully. I was holding back because I was scared.”

His love letter to Nicole in the liner notes to his CD
“Nicole Mary—I continue to be brought to my knees by this love of ours… I am in awe of how this blessed family we are creating stretches and fearlessly opens my vulnerable heart…and I just want to be a better man, for you, and father for our heavenly Sunday Rose and have you go to sleep every night knowing that no one has ever, or will ever, love you as much as I do…and all we need is faith.”

Nicole on her marriage
“I think marriage is about, every day, trying to make it better and working through things and when things are tough, saying, ‘I’m going to come to you and talk,'” Nicole says. “We’re just very tight, and we stay really tight.”

Nicole on Keith’s love letter
“He’s got a way with words. The thing that really touches me is that he says, ‘Let me put it into action.’

[From Oprah]

It’s all very sappy to me, but if that’s how they roll and they’re both deeply committed and in love good for them. It’s like Keith is even more of a romantic than Nicole, and she seems to eat it up. I don’t remember hearing that Nicole staged an intervention for Keith to go to rehab. It must have been a tough thing to deal with so early in their marriage, and seems to have made their relationship much stronger.

    Definitely sappy but in a good, real way. I’m glad they found each other & she deserves to be happy after all that crap she went through with Tom Cruise.

  2. auntie says:

    If a spouse stands by the other spouse when things are tough, such as with addiction, it is something to be thankful for daily.

    That is why he is grateful and sappy,imo. She said she would walk away if he did exactly what he did and she didnt…she stayed and they worked it out.

  3. Marjalane says:

    Oh gag me. Oh course, he’s sappy. It’s in his contract to be sappy whenever Mrs. Kidman tells him to be.

    Unfortunately, I’m old enough to remember how hideously sappy and barf-inducing, Nicole and Tom were over each other. “It was magic.” Nicole Kidman is a GOOD actress.

  4. anti says:

    if it’s genuine, i’m all for it.

  5. Atticus says:

    I thought they were really lovely in their interviews. Keith especially seemed just very genuine and candid. The pictures of them together, the love between them is almost palpable. Best to them!

  6. Delta Juliet says:

    I don’t know. It’s sweet and all but I think it kind of cheapens it a little bit to let it all hang out there. If my husband was thoughtful enough to write a love note, I wouldn’t want it plastered in an album for the world to see. How special is that?

  7. Cel says:

    I can imagine Tom being romantic and then once he draws a girl in, stating how things on going to be from here on in (all his way, with his weird beliefs).

    Keith seems like a good match for her, I think they are sweet.

  8. RHONYC says:

    hot.
    buttery.
    sweet.
    australian.
    hotness!

    go nicole, you deserve it.

    what a hunk of a man.
    he man’s up to his faults and fixes them with the help of his strong woman behind him.
    plus, that accent drives me batty. love a hot aussie accent.

    *SWOON*

    loves it. 🙂

  9. Deeta says:

    I think she is a great actress.. know nothing about him. But I am glad they are happy and in love

  10. TG says:

    Why would she date a man addicted to drugs? Didn’t she have her two kids to think about? But I guess there are exceptions to every rule and maybe he is one of them and she was able to see beyond that.

  11. Glee says:

    Only some a–hole who doesn’t know what love is would think it was too sappy…….Keith & Nicole , Angie & Brad YOU Rock………..

  12. shayrlmj says:

    They have been through a lot together and it shows!! She is reaping the rewards of standing by her man when times got tough. They seem real and deeply in love with each other and very thankful for all of their blessings. I love this couple and their sweet daughter…

  13. mln says:

    It was definitely too sappy I was actually watching yesterday. I will admit when he told the story about his heart being open I teared up a little bit that part seemed genuine to me. But I could tell Oprah wanted to ask more because they were so glossing over the cheating scandal etc. I also wanted Oprah to ask about the older kids, but I think Oprah is afraid of Nicole does anyone remember how Tom & Nicole ignored Oprah at the Oscars one year?

  14. PrettyTarheel says:

    @TG-her kids are contractually obligated to remain within Tom’s clutches 90% of the time. *Scientology shivers*

  15. Megan says:

    good for them!!! everyone deserves to be happy!!!

  16. Mollyb says:

    It would seem flowery to me, too, except they have both been around the block and seem to have been a little battered and broken, so I am happy for them.

  17. Stronzilla says:

    Actually, you had to give her props for dating Lenny Kravitz. That must have really chapped Tommy’s hide.

  18. Tuatara says:

    @RHONYC — Keith Urban is a New Zealander, not an Aussie. But maybe you are talking about Nicole. Not sure. Either way, he is a Kiwi, she an Aussie.

  19. ghostbuster says:

    you know i never really got the whole botox thing, i guess i never paid attention, so i watched part of the interview. i didnt realize she was crying at one point until i saw her eyes were misty. she blinked, moved her mouth and and eyebrows. that was it! it was very interesting to watch. shes such a beautiful person and feel bad that she wants to be more like a wax figure than her normal beautiful self.

  20. Jayna says:

    It was such a beautiful interview. And he didn’t start out gushing, like Tom Cruise does in interviews. It was more Oprah asking probing questions. It was very moving and his love seems so genuine and deep and thankful. Nicole once said in an interview they were two lonely people who met each other at the right time. Keith is a great guy and glad to see he kicked his demons. I think he and Nicole have a lot of gratitude for finding each other and won’t muck it up.

    And, Ghostbuster, I thought her face was beautiful. It definitely moved and didn’t look wax-like at all imo. She had more color than usual and I loved her hair color and glad to see her lips are back to looking normal because she has a gorgeous smile. You didn’t realize she was crying because she was trying to holding back the tears and not give in to it.

  21. Tazina says:

    Keith was more open than Nicole. It was cute though. Oprah of course eats that stuff up. As for Nicole’s face being frozen, who cares. It’s her deal and no one else’s.

  22. OtherChris says:

    I am truly glad for them. She deserves someone decent after years of crazy with Tom Cruise. It sounds corny, but they really seem like they complete each other.

  23. Aqua says:

    They are a great couple,well matched.They went through a lot early on in their marriage and seemed to have made it through,so I wish them nothing but the best.

  24. devilgirl says:

    I like them, and they seem happy. Good for them.

  25. Imnothere says:

    Which time when he went to rehab? I guess detoxing doesn’t really count as rehab, but I’m pretty familiar with some people who have had to deal with his detoxing BS on quite a few occasions.

  26. gabs says:

    Nicole REALLY wants an oscar nom this year. Eh, she deserves it. I truly think shes one of the greatest actresses and if Oprah has got her back then shes probably getting a nod.

  27. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    YAY, There really is love out there.

    I want it.

  28. RHONYC says:

    @ Tuatara:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    EVEN BETTER! 🙂
    i’ve had a thing for New Zealander accents since listening to Lucy Lawless of Xena.
    i love their exaggerated vowels. lol.
  29. Courtney says:
    yes Nicole does have a gorgeous smile. it’s so nice to see a modern day hollywood couple stick together through tough times most don’t
  30. Kiska says:
    Nicole deserves to be loved. Esp. after living with TommyGirl and all. People make fun of her but I think she has been classy all the way. I hope their marriage lasts.
  31. Raven says:
    I watched this yesterday. He was genuinely embarrassed when Oprah asked him to read the love note even though it was on the album cover. I get the sense that they are both pretty shy or private and are doing a lot of things that they are a bit uncomfortable with to promote their current projects.
    He was a great performer on stage. I’d never seen him before.
    As far as cleaning up, he looks pretty clean and sober to me. I’m glad she stayed with him, and that the intervention was private. Apparently, both have a few friends or family members who are like Sandra Bullock’s friends and family–they don’t need to sell stories to the tabloids.
  32. Tuatara says:
    @RHONYC — nice to hear that about my fellow countrymen! I was trying in my head to put together an NZ hot guy Friday. Keith Urban, Karl Urban, Russell Crowe, Flight of the Conchords .. jeez, I don’t know. We might be a bit thin on the ground.
  33. francesca says:
    What makes me believe in their sincerity is that Nicole stresses they talk about everything. I really believe that would make the difference. You have to talk to each other – even about the hard stuff – or it makes your relationship very vulnerable.
  34. mln says:
    Keith lucked out that this happened way before Tiger/Jesse James it was more than drugs and alchohol he was a sex addict and was sleeping with half of Nashville. Everyone has forgotten about that part.
  35. PJ says:
    Keith Urban was born in New Zealand but moved to Australia when he was a small child.
    That’s how he and Nicole met — at a G’day Australia event honoring prominent Australians in the U.S.
    They have a lot in common: Both Catholic, Australian, in show biz, gorgeous, have parents who are still married. And now sappiness!
    I think a lot of country singers are sappy, the words to country songs are often too sweet for my taste.
  36. Rachel says:
    @ TG, if I remember correctly, it wasn’t drugs. He’s an alcoholic.
  37. Jayna says:
    Rachel, he said cocaine and alcohol in the interview.
  38. Jeri says:
    I hope they’re really happy and will remain that ways for many many years.
  39. TG says:
    I thought I read in his interview on some website (not sure which) with Operah that he was addicted to cocaine as well as alcohol and I wouldn’t bring an alcoholic around my children either. Anyway, they seen fine now and like I said there are exceptional people everywhere and this might be the case, but in general someone with substance abuse problems is not what I would want my children to be around and I would certainly not let my ex let my kids around that person either.
  40. Camille says:
    Its too sappy and yet very sweet at the same time. I still don’t care to hear about it, can’t they keep that stuff to themselves?
    @Tuatara: Great minds think alike! I was hoping for a ‘Down under’ HGF recently myself. Definitely need some Karl Urban (he’s from Star Trek etc) on here.
    Nice to see another Kiwi on here 😀 .
  41. Bitter fruit says:
    She was born in Hawaii.
    Cold fish and gay dude. Tragic.
  42. Henriette says:
    Are y’all kidding me? They aren’t all gooey in love. This is Nic, remember – she who played sappy spouse for a decade while bearding for Tommy. She learned publicity manipulation at the knee of the master – Tom Cruise – before he imploded and fired Pat Kingsley and accused Matt Lauer of glibness. Nicole is able to play this game with the added bonus that she is ice cold and so will never, ever implode like Tom. She plays the public like a violin, making gooey eyes and pretending to be so in love. Puh-leeze.
  43. Emily says:
    What a load of wank. If someone asked me how my heart was, I’d say “still beating”. Seriously, who says shit like this? Ugh.
  44. slymm27 says:
    @emily….lo! Lol!…what a silly interview. How can anyone believe this crap? Omg!!, get a grip ya’ll, i see divorce headlines soon for these two, as soon as the ho’s he is bonning on the side start needing more, then there will be big trouble. Sappy! Sappy! Sappy!…so not real.
  45. Crash2GO2 says:
    Wow. The last four posters on here have issues methinks! lol
  46. FRAN says:
    Too sappy? Really, I don’t think it is anyone’s business. This couple is in love and they have been through a lot together. It is absolutely disgusting that people make rude comments about their love-sappy or not sappy? Who cares? It is a breath of fresh air to see this couple who clearly seem to treasure one another.
  47. Ruffian9 says:
    “What a load of wank.”
    Can I use this?
    Anyhoo, I do think they’re pouring it on a bit thick. Real love can be/should be private. No need to emote all over the friggin’ place. It’s like Jada Smith and her “me & Will, we sex it up ALL the time” spiel; It gets to where we start thinking you’re making it up.
  48. Chris says:
    I can hardly believe either the extreme love or the extreme hate for any celebrity. What really do we know of any of them from sitting in front of a television set watching an interview or computer reading some gossip site? I very much hope Nicole and Keith are in love and happy, but its much in the same way I hope any other couple is in love and happy. Hey folks, in fifty years most of us will be pushing up daisies, so lighten up and care or not care about something that matters.
  49. Dannnii says:
    They felt genuine to me. Both seem to have had years of upset in their lives. Nicole is still super shy..after all these years? Wow.
    Oh, and she is so pretty!
  50. Vee says:
    I love these two. I wish their family tons of happiness!
  51. ghostbuster says:
    @jayna- thanks for a different perspective i really appreciate it 🙂
  52. cruiz2 says:
    They obviously have some common sense about raising their child. Don’t see her paraded around as a Toy Ploy Pap Attention Getter – like someone else we all know and see constantly!!!!
  53. kelly says:
    Excuse moi while I eject my callous, cynical lunch into the designated bucket.
    If it’s all magically, amazingly true, then at the very least, they’re oversharing something that should be fundamentally private.
    And if it’s erm… massaged or cough, scripted, by a team of expert handlers, then pteradactyls should overcome the time space continuum and bear them screaming to the particular hell that awaits lying famewhores who stop at nothing to polish their public personas.
  54. bellaluna says:
    I think their story is sweet; their happiness deserved. Both have been through struggles, and to find your true love (especially after thinking you already found him) is a real treat. You know, someone who stands by you no matter what. I’m speaking from personal experience, so if I sound sappy too, then so be it.
  55. Listerino says:
    Happy for them and all but he needs to get a new haircut and she needs to lay off the botox cause I don’t care what anyone says she looks like she really has to force her face to co-operate just to smile.
  56. Majosha says:
    Chris: Great post!
  57. Rosanna says:
    That’s what true love does! I’m happy 🙂
  58. Trippin says:
    Sorry, not feelin it. They’ve got to be one of the most boringest, lackluster couples out there. No sparks between them, a couple of cold kippers. She lacks color, too alabastery and he lacks that ruggedness that most country singers have.
  59. Not Buying It In Nashville says:
    That’s the great thing about actors. You never know when they’re acting. These two are all about PR &a nothing more.
