Raven-Symoné lost weight, gained attitude

tinkerbell 201008
Raven-Symoné, former “Cosby Show” child star and star of Disney’s now-canceled “That’s So Raven,” has lost a lot of weight and looks great. She sounds pretty snotty about it, though, although she’s always sounded that way. The last we covered Raven, she’d lost about 35 pounds in 2009. Now she’s lost even more weight, but says that she thought she “looked fabulous before and nobody else did.” She explained that she wears “bigger clothes” now “because I don’t like the way people stare” now that’s she’s thin. Why are her tits hanging out then? You think she would cover them up too if it bothered her so much.

If there’s one thing Raven-Symoné never lacked, it’s self-assurance.

The former Disney star, 25, who once contently called herself “thick and fabulous,” showed off a decidedly slimmer look at Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards. Strutting her stuff in a cleavage-bearing, all-black leather ensemble with thigh-high Louboutin boots, Symoné says she was never one to consider herself unattractive when she was still heavy.

“I thought I looked fabulous before and nobody else did,” she tells PEOPLE. “So, whatever.”

If anything, Symoné, who just shot an ABC Family pilot called The Great State of Georgia, is not yet entirely comfortable with her new look.

“Actually, now I wear bigger clothes because I don’t like the way people stare at me,” she says. “I liked it before. Now, you’re just looking at me for the wrong reasons. Before, you were actually looking at me for a real reason.”

Either way, the onetime That’s So Raven star says she’s breathing a sigh of relief over no longer having to deal with her show – the strain of which, she says, contributed to her weight gain.

“That’s what stress does to you,” Symoné says. “I’ve been not stressing. I’ve been in my own house, decorating and finding hobbies.”

[From People]

Good for Raven, but she could tone it down a little. I get that she’s defensive because she got a lot of criticism when she was heavy, and she definitely struggled with that. Debbie Allen even called her a “little heifer,” but it was meant in an affectionate way. It must have been hard to be a larger person in the public eye. Raven made one more important change to her appearance. She fixed those jacked eyebrows.

  1. Eve says:

I’m more surprised that she fixed her eyebrows. She looks good.

  2. HEB says:

She probably said that because she was hungry and thus irritable.

She looks like Christina Milian’s twin now.

  3. Kiki says:

I always thought that girl was beautiful but her attitude sometimes put me off.

  4. Roma says:

She probably has a lot of stretch marks and showing off the ladies is the easiest way to be all “look at me” without people, you know, actually getting a look at her.

Good for her for losing the weight. But I still think she’s a spoiled brat.

  5. Squirrel says:

Well she already spent her childhood years strutting about a tv-studio doing little else than garner affection from all other actors (mostly for still being young and cute). Mr. Cosby as role model will not have helped, more strutting about and thinking he’s the bees knees. Whatever she’s wearing here could cover any size of arms, and exposing saggy mammaries surely does not make people look for the right reasons. Good on her for losing weight and looking (and possibly feeling) better. Now wrap ’em up and learn how to dress the figure well.

  6. nycmom10024 says:

She was an adorable precocious little girl who reallly has become a pretty young woman. She has been in the spotlight almost continually since was 3 years old.

This woman made it through the Disney machine and has apparently survived not only that craziness but sharing her first grown-up apt with Lohan.

There are so many wrong turns this Raven could have made and she has seemingly avoided them.

I say congrats to her and her parents.

  7. Saphira says:

Awww, she does sound a tad uppity but I’ve always liked her. She looks great but why is she still sucking it in during poses?

  8. malachais says:

    She looks good, fierce outfit.

  9. Darlene says:

oh, I love her. She does the best she can with her “flawed” eyebrows. I liked her thick and fabulous and I like her thinner and fabulous. Go Raven-Symone!!!

  10. sasa says:

She reminds me of Nicole Ritchie now. Looks great, well done to her!

  11. Arianna says:

ugh, i have never liked her.
please dont act like you dislike people checking you out… gimme a fucking break.

you look good, own it and embrace it, dont seem like it’s such a burden now that you’re healthier

  12. mln76 says:

She looks great but what an attitude problem. And yeah she had it when she was heavy too. I really can’t stand her. But how adorable was she on the Cosby show??? BTW I don’t think her ego can be blamed on Cosby none of the other Cosby kids have that kind of ego when they do interviews. I think it comes from being a Disney brat just like Miley.

  13. maria says:

She doesn’t have an attitude problem. She has a dry sense of humor and tons of self esteem. There is nothing wrong here, so stop hating. She looks gorgeous.

  14. fabgrrl says:

Thank God she lost that weight. She is a very talented and beautiful young lady. It was sad watching her balloon up like that, at such a young age.

  15. granos says:

To me she will always be Olivia, wearer of clown inspired rompers & death knell of The Cosby Show.

  16. Abby says:

She looks great. And ditto to the person who said she survived the disney machine with her sanity!

  17. LittleDeadGirl says:

Really? I didn’t see anything wrong with the interview, maybe there was more to it but I thought she sounded cool and confident and I was glad she didn’t say “oh I feel so blessed now I’m 30 pounds less” as if that changes your whole life and when you weight a little more you might as well kill yourself.

  18. Bodhi says:

I don’t think she sounds snotty or uppity; I think she sounds like a confident young woman.

  19. Kaye says:

I think she is very pretty but I wish she would get a good stylist.

  20. RHONYC says:

the more weight she loses the more she looks like lil’ olivia again from the cosby show.

she will always be adorable to me no matter what. 🙂

  21. jessica says:

She is very Nicole Richey in the black jacket and pants outfit!!

  22. Alexa says:

WHERE is this supposed “attitude” you all are hearing? She’s one of the few celebrities that seems to have her head on straight – PLUS – she’s extremely talented (dancing, singing, acting -GREAT COMEDIENNE!) If I had to accuse any Disney entertainer of being a role model – I’d choose Raven!

  23. Lukie says:

Me thinks someone’s been rummaging around Ciara’s closet…

She looks fantastic. Glad she didn’t get too skinny. The weight made her look like a linebacker.

Before I catch sh*t for that, I am built exactly like her. The shoulders and back are gorgeous, but it’s always a struggle to keep those things in check when you are a boobalicious, thick chick…

  24. Obvious says:

i liked her better with some meat on hr bones. she was attractive and it was great seeing someone out there who wasn’t a rail. but her brows look better. but i will say i wish she wasn’t so skinny, she looks funky to me.

  25. jaye E says:

None of what she said sounds snotty. Not what she said about her weight loss and nothing she said in the previous quote you linked. She’s a confident girl who refused to let what other people said or thought define her, even if it did get to her at times. Now she’s a young woman who has lost weight and is still processing how it has changed how people perceive her and maybe how she perceives herself. Cut the child some slack.

  26. nnire says:

i agree with the commenters saying that this article fails to show her with a big attitude.

having experienced extreme weight loss myself, i also personally felt very exposed when people suddenly started noticing me more.

it’s like my weight was some sort of invisibility cloak and people looked through me, not at me, and when i started to become more “attractive” people who would never have noticed me before were suddenly interested in looking and talking to me. i found this very frustrating because it’s not like i became that much more interesting or intelligent or funny–the only thing that changed was the size of my @ss!

people who fail to get why this is frustrating to Raven should put on a fat suit for a day and see how suddenly invisible you become when you are 75lbs+ overweight. the world treats you like a different person.

  27. Johanna says:

I think she’s trying hard to sound as if she doesn’t want to put heavier people down now that she’s lost weight. Mama looks good. 35lbs. is an accomplishment let her enjoy the moment without trying to dissect her comments.

  28. MissyA says:

I’ve never been dramatically overweight, but I know how good it feels to drop those nagging 5-10lbs. You definitely carry yourself differently when you feel strong and sexy.

My best friend lost around +50 lbs over the past year and looks freaking awesome! I’m hesitant to gush over her to her face, though, because I don’t want her to feel that she wasn’t worthwhile when she was bigger. (I compliment her on consistently kicking my ass running, instead. )She’s still the same wonderful person, but now she has more energy and more confidence – and it’s the confidence that makes you appealing!

  29. ReallyRosie says:

@MissyA: You seem like a very insightful person and a really good friend.

I have recently slimmed down a lot and I am having severe emotional issues. I am being treated differently and totally feel like I was considered less than worthy when I was heavier. I avoid seeing friends that I haven’t seen in awhile because I cannot handle the way people react.

I also wear baggy clothes and hide my body because I am not comfortable with it yet. And I am very uncomfortable when people check me out because that never really happened before and I have no practice on handling that.

  30. jzhz says:

@MissyA – I wish more people were as sensitive and thoughtful as you are!

@ReallyRosie – Good for you for getting healthy. That is awesome, and I feel for you, because it must be a real mindf**k to have people treat you sooo differently just because you slimmed down. It’s sad, but we are a deeply superficial society. You know who’s not worthy of your energy? People who treat you differently only because your appearance changed. Unreal.

Raven looks pretty great – healthy, glowing and I don’t think she has attitude.

  31. Tomas says:

I’m sure she had help from her plastic surgeon…as with most of the celebrity weight loss stories.

  32. meg says:

Ugh! I call BS. There’s true confidence, then there is trying to make ppl THINK you’re confident. She sounds like the latter. Plus, she has the face of a muppet, so I’d revel in the stares if I were her…

  33. June says:

Gosh, look at me, just lost weight, got a new bod…think I’m gonna wear a puffy ruffle bird to show my new shape.

  34. Kim says:

Shes wearing a leather bra with her sagging boobs hanging out BUT shes doesnt want you looking at her for the wrong reasons! Oh Brother!!!!

I think shes wearing bigger clothes because she really didnt lose all that much weight and the Spanx type underwear she has to wear after the lipo will show in tight clothes.

  35. jaye E says:

I lost a lot of weight last year and I know how it feels to not just be looked at, but it’s almost like people are dissecting you. People constantly staring at you, telling you how good you look, which is nice but there are also those people who congratulate you on the weight loss in one breath and point out a new flaw in the next. Someone upthread described it as a “mindf**k” and I think that is the exact right way to describe it. Your fat makes you invisible and you are dying to be seen, then you lose weight and people start to look at you, but it’s not at all what you thought it would be.

  36. Lynne says:

Lets face it, nobody cares about fat people period! You don’t look good, you look abnormal. EVERYONE judges you by your appearance and they are lying if they say they don’t!

  37. beanie says:

    She looks great! Go Raven!

  38. jaye E says:

@Lynne…no, not everyone subscribes to the thought that fat people are abnormal and there are quite a few people who don’t judge people based on their looks. People like you who make blanket statements speaking for everyone but you are really only speaking for yourself. Own your prejudice.

  39. Aspie says:

What’s wrong with her comments? She was being honest about her feelings on her weight before and now. She doesn’t sound like a “diva” at all!

I think @Maria had a great point when said that Raven has a dry sense of humor and tons of self esteem, which may probably not translate well in written press form so some may perceive her as being a “diva” when in fact she’s not.

She’s a rare successful and well adjusted woman who hasn’t encountered the same road blocks that have befallen other former Disney Stars yet she’s criticized for having an “attitude” problem when she simply has high self esteem.

Go Raven, you looked great before and now!

  40. crtb says:

I think shes wearing bigger clothes because she really didnt lose all that much weight and the Spanx type underwear she has to wear after the lipo will show in tight clothes.

The only attitude I hear is from posters the posters. Why would you say something so obviously false? You don’t think she really lost the weight? Then where did she hide it? I have no idea what kind of undergarments she is wearing however some people have flabby skin and lack muscle tone when they lose a lot of weight. So just maybe, The spandex has nothing to do with lipo.

  41. Crash2GO2 says:

Did Debbie Allen really call her a ‘little heifer’? That’s not affectionate. That freakin’ passive aggressive and bitchy.

  42. Kim says:

Crash2Go2 I disagree like Debbie,I’m from Houston and I’m Black and often refer to be cousins, friends etc(both thin and fat ones) affectionately as a heifer. In the same way ” bitch” can be used with affection amongst friends .It depends on the context.Debbie is like a second mom to Raven.

  43. Trippin says:

Loses weight, gains weight BFD. Talking about weight gains and losses are sooooo boring.

  44. Isa says:

    Her eyebrows look awesome!

  45. Hakura says:

She looks gorgeous (though I don’t at all care for what she’s wearing… it’s like flamenco dancer gone wrong.)

I sort of get the feeling she’s overcompensating a bit with the ‘self assured ‘I’m so hot I can’t stand it’ type comments. If someone goes through a long period of time being very uncomfortable with themselves, a lot of the uppity comments are just them trying to convince *themselves* that they’re beautiful.

Regardless, she’s beautiful! (She worked hard for it, she deserves to gloat a bit.) =)

  46. Camille says:

Her face reminds me of Nicole Ritchie’s now. She looks great, good for her.

  47. Victoria says:

so um..er …when is she gonna come out of the closet…? eh..

  48. julia says:

    MAGNIFIQUE ! SUBLIME !

  49. Limabean says:

I totally agree with those DEFENDING RAVEN. I am an ex heiffer too and I feel exactly the same as she does. It’s hard to find real friends and a boyfriend when you’re “supposedly” more attractive because people can be very shallow and not see what’s underneath. Raven has proven herself over the years with her talents etc so she every god given right to say how she feels in which ever manner she feels. At the end of the day we all agree that she looks just amazing.

  50. Erica says:

I love Raven she is one of the only Disney stars that did not end up messed up. She is a great role model for other young women. She does not sound snotty she’s just trying to make the point she was pretty when she was bigger, but other people are only now noticing it. I am very proud of her!!!

  51. ND says:

I’m sorry but I have never in my entire life EVER heard of anyone using the word “heifer” in an affectionate manner. If someone ever said that about me at 135 pounds I would not ever talk to them again, let alone as a bigger girl. That’s like telling someone with acne they’re a little “pizzaface”
