Carey Mulligan in violet Prada: gorgeous, adorable or meh?

wenn3159676

These are some photos of Carey Mulligan at the Palm Springs International Film Festival over the weekend. Her dress is Prada – isn’t it pretty? The perfect amount of sparkle, not all assy and booby and trashy. I love this dress on her. And I even like the kind of awkwardness of her hair – it doesn’t look as adorable as it did a few months ago, and it’s obvious she’s trying to grow it out a bit. I’m kind of in love with her anyway, so it’s not shocking that I find everything she does to be adorable.

At the film festival, Carey spent a little time backstage with Jake Gyllenhaal, apparently. He was there to promote… Love & Other Drugs, I guess. And he’s fresh off his breakup with Taylor Swift. At the age of 25, Carey is only 4 years older than Taylor Swift. But it’s an important four years, and she and Jake would be an appropriate match, if you’re trying to set him up with someone. Lainey at LaineyGossip is trying to make it happen. I’m not feeling it, though, mostly because my opinion of Jake has fallen so far with this Swifty junk, and I don’t want his douche anywhere near my girl. Carey needs to be with someone more substantial, in my opinion. Perhaps an older man… oh, no, SHE NEEDS TO BE WITH RYAN GOSLING. That’s it. That’s who I would set her up with. Oh, and she and Gosling just worked together on Faster. Gosling needs to get on that. Especially because Blake Lively is little more than a giant time-suck, relationship-wise.

Classy, classic, would want to wear it.

  2. Isabel says:

I have no interest in her whatsoever. I don’t even think that she’s adorable. Maybe something’s wrong with me?

The dress is OK. I am not blown away by it.

  3. malachais says:

beautiful, but I think darker hair would complement her skin tone.

  4. Lori says:

Love it! Although I think someone attacked her with an eyeliner pencil.

  5. Mia Girl says:

Love her, love the dress… not crazy about the belt.

  6. Hautie says:

When I say this I am really making a blanket statement.

Ladies, if you are going to wear a great dress and great shoes. Wear a pair of super sheer great hose/stockings. It makes all the difference in the world.

The only time a girl can leave the hose behind is Summer time. When the dress and shoe are a obvious summer choice.

A beautiful sheer hose is the finishing touch for a great dress and pump.

And I like this dress. Rather pretty with good cut to it.

  7. Vi says:

love her! love the dress, not crazy about the shoes

  8. samihami says:

    Meh

  9. PrettyTarheel says:

    @ Hautie:
Speaking as someone with Carey Mulligan’s skin tone, it’s impossible to find appropriate hose. I either have to wear white tights (who wants to look like a nurse), sheer black hose (which look ok, but not phenomenal) black tights (which would totally overload this dress) or nude hose (which are seven shades darker than my skin).
I have the option of saying screw it and wearing pants all winter, which I do with one exception, but Carey doesn’t. Therefore, I support her bare-legged, pale-as-paper gams with my whole heart.

    Sincerely,
A woman so pale I can’t find foundation white enough.

  10. Kasey says:

Meh. I’ve heard her name around and believe it was when she was linked to Shia. The dress is ok but she’s so meh to me that the whole thing comes off as meh. Help me understand why you want her with Ryan Gosling? She’s so meh and forgettable. I honestly think that if I see her again, without her name attached I won’t know who she is. I have no clue what she is famous for or why people find her celebrity-attractive. She channels that not cuteness that Kirsten Dunst does to me, only Kirsten is more striking. Perhaps its the hair color but she looks so blah.

I can totally see her with Jake. She is so his “type”-skinny and blond. The fact that he has a type coupled with the fact that he dated Reese is the ONLY pause I have to believing he plays for the other team. I would be VERY okay with she and Jake because I don’t care about him either way. I hate people duping me and perhaps I hate even more people attempting to dupe me but failing oh-so-miserably i.e. the Jaylor fauxmance/showmance.

  11. Ron says:

I like it, but it really looks like a Mad Men costume.

  12. The_Porscha says:

Hautie, I totally agree. I think Carey looks wonderful here, but sheer hose never hurt anything. It’s a very easy way to make a look very crisp and defined. Anyway, the girl is super cute and I love the dress.

ETA: Isabel and Kasey, have y’all seen An Education? Bam, after that, I was all about the Mulligan. She’s wonderful, and I find her very talented, although I’ve only seen that and Never Let Me Go. I refused to waste the money or the time on Money Never Sleeps.

  13. guesty says:

her dress is very june cleaver…so meh.

she’s very eclectic tho & that’s why it works for her.

  14. Mari says:

Never thought much of her physically…but the dress is cute.

  15. Chicoulina says:

I’ve noticed that all the celebrities are wearing everything 365 days a year without panty hoses. When did they disappear all of a sudden? When did they become a fashion faux?
I’m also very pale but after searching a while I found a great nude panty hose.Kind of pricey but worth the money. No shine at all and very thin it looks like I’m not wearing any.

  16. xxodettexx says:

as someone who has given up wearing hose since the 80s, i personally do not mind the “new” trend of no-hose… rather like it as it seems the opposite of fussy and hot [one of my pet peeves on hose-wearing when i was a child, i always felt like my who-ha was boiling, and yes ive lived mostly near the equator!] edited to add: and i like naked limbs! i think its just so much nicer, but again: IMHO….

LOVE the dress, but i do tend to like odd fabrics and dark jewel tones

  17. Alaska says:

I love her dress! I agree she’d look nicer w/ darker hair, but I think her skin tone is beautiful and the dress really flatters her.

I’m a hose hater… in the winter, I just wear pants, or tights. I never wear pantyhose. I’m also a pale person who has a hard time finding the right shade, so I just let my white legs display to the world!

  18. Anna says:

I swore this said “violent Prada” and wondered WTH that could mean! Love the dress, hate the belt, and what is up with the eyeliner?!

  19. Roxanne75 says:

Cute dress, I love it! Classic–nothing exotic more simple, classic and looks great on her!

  20. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Hate the dress and keep her away from Jakey. She’s too sweet to deal with that mess.

  21. buell says:

It looks like Prada skinned a bedazzled Barney and made it into a dress. And would it kill her to smile? Why do these actresses always look like they have been sucking on lemons?

  22. Maria says:

I think she’s cute in an average way. I know that she’s young, but her face looks prematurely old for some reason.

  23. WOM says:

Dress is pleasant. Shoes are meh. Hair colour is hideous.

  24. Lydia says:

    Love everything about her look.

You wouldn’t catch me dead in any kind of hose. I loathe hose…

  25. original kate says:

i love her and i think she looks very pretty. i despise nude hose – they always remind me of old ladies in nursing homes wearing baggy pantyhose and slippers. black tights or nothing, IMO.

  26. jzhz says:

I’m still trying to figure out how someone so young can also look like someone’s grandmother. Seriously, she’s the oldest-looking young I’ve ever seen.

  27. lrm says:

she’s in palm springs-even if it is january, it’s not exactly super chilly there..i am in so cal, and i dont own a pair of hose….and have not in decades, even when living in colder climes….

anyway, CA is more relaxed fashion wise…for better or worse.

But i dont think no hose is a problem here…though i could say hose with pumps is a must. pumps w/o is a little off. particularly old school pumps such as this.

i think that dress would be cool with some tall snug boots with a wide/medium sized heel, personally.

  28. Anna says:

WHY are people into this girl, she’s not that pretty, she wears whatever ‘vintage’ shizzle is out there for her, and it usually looks old and frumpy.

  29. Anti-icon says:

    Gorgeous!

  30. luls says:

@maria. i agree. its her katie holmes JOWLS that make her look older.
Poor thing, imagine what shes going to look like at 35!!

Also, her smile is sort of frownish (like the corners of her mouth point downwards)
That type of smile really bugs me.

I really dont find her anything more than average-common cute looking…

  31. Kim says:

The dress doesnt fit her properly esap in chest. I do appreciate at her age that she isnt in some see thru Spandex dress & has class in the way she dresses.

  32. Kim says:

Hey Jake – Wolfman Jack called and wants his look back =(

  33. Jacquie says:

She looks hungry. The hair is awful the dress is pretty but she’s starting to look like the rest of Hollywood instead of being an individual.

  34. lachica says:

i personally think that this girl’s beauty is overrated. she’s not all that. actually she’s very little IMO.

  35. TeeTee says:

she looks cute BUT her hair color washes her out.

I agree, sheer hose would have been fab..Saks sells them, reallllll thin and hardly any color too them..its hard to tell you have them on..they are kinda expensive but worth it.

just finishes the look, especially since the dress is so low key elegant.
she looks nice and I like her acting, she’s pretty good.

  36. Kat says:

Love the dress, hate the belt and her hair that blonde.

  37. Hakura says:

I like the dress, I’m just not crazy about the ‘tulip puff’ style skirt thing.

And I definitely don’t care for the hairstyle. It looks a bit odd and young (when she already has a young face).

  38. Glyrics says:

I’m tired of her pout, her look of “I don’t want to be here.” DON’t GO! Stay home, knit. Just take that sullen look with you

  39. beth says:

mad men style is the latest trend, havent y’all heard?
i think she went too dark here with the eye makeup and the auberginish black dress – those colours would better suit an olive-skin toned brunette.

actually, with skin like that, if she dyed her hair darker, and went more extreme with the eye makeup, and punked up her clothes a little – she’d look goth, and she’d look great goth!

alas, the goth look suits me not

  40. Ari says:

Tis sad when the dress that is on the verge of fugly is still better looking than the wearer :L

  41. jayem says:

I like the dress okay, but I’m mucho meh on the actress.

And I’m sorry, but pantyhose are so outdated, they’re only in fashion for bank robbers. You guys are complaining that she looks old, but hose would have aged her another 20 years. I think in this day and age, they’re only meant to cover varicose veins. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the people mentioning them are, ummmm, older.

  42. Ruffian9 says:

    The dress is gorgeous!

“Nude” pantyhose are an abomination. Unless they’re an absolute perfect match to your skin tone and completely sheer , they will age you 20 years.

  43. enya says:

I don’t think “gorgeous” and “Carey Mulligan” belong in the same sentence. She sometimes looks cute, but that’s as far as that ship goes. And even then, it’s being hauled out by a tug.

  44. enya says:

And ditto on the ‘no pantyhose’ belief. Pantyhose haven’t been fashionable for two decades.

  45. Mrs. Harrison Ford says:

50s housewife, but she looks cute in it.

  46. senpolia says:

Thank you for the good writeup. It actually used to be a entertainment account it. Look complex to more delivered agreeable from you! By the way, how can we be in contact?
