I TOLD YOU. I told you Anne Hathaway was the best candidate in the alleged field of women rumored to be auditioning for the new Batman film. According to the studio’s official press release (via HuffPo), Anne has been cast as Catwoman in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. Oh, and Tom Hardy’s in the mix too. Let’s all bow down and give thanks that Jessica Biel or Keira Knightley or Naomi Watts didn’t get the role. Although… there was another rumored woman I did like a lot too – Eva Green. Damn, Eva would have made a really good Catwoman too, wouldn’t she?
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”
In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I know some of you think Anne is rather squirrelly, but ever since I saw her in Rachel Getting Married, my respect for her has grown and grown. She’s one of the best actresses of her generation, and she’s also one of the most diverse. She can do hi-brow comedy (The Devil Wears Prada, Love and Other Drugs), low-brow action-comedy (Get Smart), straight drama (Brokeback Mountain, Rachel Getting Married, etc), period drama (Becoming Jane), and now she’s trying a comic book adaptation. I think Anne can handle it. I’m really happy for her. And you know she’ll look good in the catsuit. Please.

I think it can work. Hathaway can act and should be able to reveal the complexity of that character. That’s what Nolan looks for.

Not too sure if Anne can pull it off, but I do trust Christopher Nolan…Katie Holmes was a big mistake, but he replaced her with Maggie Gyllenhaal, so I hope that means that he is getting better at casting female roles.

Also-everyone ripping on her looks, if she and a few others weren’t in Hollywood we’d have a bunch of average typical beauties with no range. I’ve only seen a small part of Hathaway’s filmography, and from that I don’t have very much believability she can bee a femme-fatale ALONG with an anti-hero.
But, I’m ok with this, totally. Out of all the rumored choices, my top pick was Eva Green, and Hathaway was my second. The rest seemed like shitty actresses that were just pulled out of a hat.

Eva Green would have killed that role. Too bad. Hathaway doesn’t strike me as the type for this role. Granted she has done some decent work in more serious parts.
Who knows maybe Nolan wants it that way? Maybe her character is supposed to be a foil and only act as a catalyst in the story? After Ledger’s performance as The Joker, I doubt she has what it takes to be a truly sinister adversary to Batman. That’s my two cents anyway.

I just can’t contain! I LOVE the Batman franchise, and I was REALLY hoping for a bombshell sexy actress to rock this role. Anne is WOODEN! Has a horse-face – a worse toothy-tile smile than Hilary Duff! This is just as bad as the whole Maggie debacle. EPIC FAIL! I am SO SICK of seeing these same ‘ol actresses cast in every part! A gorgeous, smokingly hot, sexy newcomer would have been perfect. Now it’s just going to be: Oh look, there’s Anne Hathaway, trying to look sexy as catwoman. So much for losing myself for an hour in fantasy. These roles are bought, or bribed, or something, because don’t tell me there we not a TON of alternatives that blow her away. And last thing – she’s a huge awkward clunky she-beast!!! Michelle and Halle were puurfect for the role (yes, Halle had a shitty script, but she rocked the part – so badass). Catwoman is supposed to be sleek, FELINE! I’m a LEO – I KNOW.

To me, Catwoman/Selena Kyle is a woman who is very smart and strong in her everyday life, but with a kittenish sexiness. Teasing and playful, but still tough and smart. Anne just doesn’t have that.
When she puts the catsuit on to go burgling, she’ll fit into it nicely, but that’s all I can say for her… Guess we’ll see if she can convince us naysayers.

To me the best actress who ever played Catwoman was Eartha Kitt. she had that inherent feline quality about her. Even her natural voice, graceful gestures screems : kitten. More souple, gymnast ballerina like than athletic.
A few years ago, someone like Lucy Liu would also have been an interesting choice.

Agree that it would be nice to have Talia al-Ghul, a more interesting character than Selina Kyle. But Catwoman is one of the most popular characters. I just don’t see Anne having any chemistry with Bale, but Nolan doesn’t seem too interested in romance.
I’m still waiting for a Birds of Prey film, or at least a Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle franchise. Never going to happen though because of stupid, sexist Hollywood.

Eva Green probably would have been a better choice, as she has that kind of ‘cat like’ quality about her, but I think after Anne proving that she has sex and star appeal in that Golden Globes dress I think she will do well.
As long as she doesn’t make her performance OTT and cheesy which I have a terrible feeling that she could do, but with Nolan directing I think he will get the right stuff out of her.

I’m intrigued…I think Nolan is a genius..so I’ll let him see how he develops the character. His interpretation of the characters in the Batman movies are unique, so I would think this is not the typical “Catwoman” a la Halle Berry.

Well…not my first choice. Anne has never really played any “dark” characters, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.
I could see Eva Green or even Scarlett Johanson as in the role for Catwoman. Scarlett has already proven she looks good in a catsuit.

I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m not a huge fan of this reboot of the series in general. I don’t get the appeal of Christopher Nolan. Inception was very good, I’ll give him that. But, the rest of his movies are so dark that I find them boring. Heath Ledger and Michael Caine were the only reason I got through the last Batman movie. Also, I’m ITA with Jenny. Nolan never includes strong female characters, and I have very little hope that this movie will be any different. No matter who plays the role, she will only be there to advance a male lead’s story line.
That said, I also find Anne to be over rated and totally boring. She isn’t sexy. She isn’t dynamic. She isn’t anything to me, other than just there. Rachel Getting Married was easily one of the most uninteresting, pretentious pieces of self congratulatory garbage I’ve ever been forced to sit through in years. You could practically hear everyone involved prepping their speech for the oscars in the background. Ugh, awful! Honestly, I can’t even think of one time when I’ve enjoyed watching this woman in anything.
Finally, there is one more thing I need to b*tch about before I end my rant. Christian Bale… UGH, Christian Bale! Worst Batman EVER! Well, no, Clooney was admittedly worse. But still, I cannot stand Christian Bale as Batman. Does he need to voice Batman as though the character is constantly constipated? I suppose the fact that Bale comes off as such an insufferable douche in real life adds to my dislike of his acting as well. But, mostly, I dislike him because his interpretation of Batman is just terrible. Playing a character as stoic is one thing. But, playing a character as a a lifeless robot with IBS is quite another. I realize that the true personalities in Batman are the villains. But, seriously, that doesn’t mean that Batman has to come off as totally dead inside. In the last movie, I would have been 100% behind the joker killing off Batman. That’s how uniteresting I find Bale in the part.
Oh, and also I’m ITA with Miss Odie2. I love Batman Returns, but I don’t need to see a new version 2.0.
