Willow Smith debuts snippet of her new ear-bleeding single, “21st Century Girl”

fp_6607739_smith_willow_coq_06_35

These are photos from the LA set of Willow Smith’s latest music video, “21st Century Girl”. This will be Willow’s follow-up to her wildly successful debut “Whip My Hair”. I actually liked “Whip My Hair” – I could understand the appeal of it, I thought it was a decent debut single. But I just listened a 15-second snippet of “21st Century Girl” and it makes me hearken back to the old days, when Willow would have been a one-hit wonder. Instead, in this new music paradigm, Willow is going to be forced down our throats for the next decade.

It’s back to the dance floor for Willow Smith! Following the runaway success of her debut single “Whip My Hair” last fall, the 10-year-old pop star shot a video for her second single, “21st Century Girl,” in Los Angeles this week, as dad Will Smith and mom Jada Pinkett Smith looked on.

She also debuted a snippet of the club-ready track in a video post on her Facebook page on Sunday.

She sings: “21st century girl/I do what I like/I’m takin’ you for a ride/Yeah I’m gonna live it up, just live it up.”

Smith, who calls the new song “a dance record,” is also hard at work on her album, reportedly due this spring, for Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label.

“It is very cool, because Jay really welcomes me and makes me feel like the record label is a place where I can have fun and talk about my career,” Willow told Vanity Fair’s February issue. “He and his people make me feel like I’m a part of something. And I love Beyoncé – she’s awesome!”

[From People]

Someone tell Willow that it’s time for her to “retire” from her music career to concentrate on her fashion lines, which I’m sure are forthcoming. I could handle Willow as a tween fashion designer – she seems more punk-influenced than jailbait/Gossip-Girl-influenced, thank God. But this musical career needs to die. Don’t believe me? Scratch out your eardrums with this 15 second snippet:

wow…that sounds like a cross between Paris Hilton and Katy Perry.

    in other words, NOT GOOD.

  2. mln76 says:

She is adorable but she doesn’t need a career in fashion, music, etc until she finishes High School.

  3. Bopa says:

Good luck Willow but I wouldn’t suggest investing a dime in her music career until there’s some evidence that she’s getting an education.

  4. Vi says:

god. that’s horrible. go to school little girl!!

  5. denise says:

This Creature has no talent in music or fashion.

  6. jinni says:

The song is the same generic crap you hear from most of the popular “artists” today.

For a minute after reading the title of the song I thought they had remixed T-Rex’s “20th Century Boy” and turned it into someting for this child to butcher. Thankfully that is not what happened.

  7. Quest says:

Willow’s outfit – not quite clear
Hairstyle – wasn’t sure what she was going for
Education – does not seem ready
Ripping my eardrum to shreds with this single – heartless

I wish Willow the best but please just stop.

  8. Whatever says:

“Instead, in this new music paradigm, Willow is going to be forced down our throats for the next decade.”

So true. I honestly don’t know who her audience is. My kids and all their friends hate Whip My Hair and even the 10 year olds are talking about how she is only famous because her parents got it for her. Someone needs to send Will and Jada a video camera and tell them to record this shit in the living room and bore their friends with it at parties!

  9. someone says:

What in the world is she wearing???? I don’t think she should hold out a lot of hope of being a singing star..go to school!

  10. Ani says:

She needs to go to school and live her childhood. Period.
Can someone tell that to her parents?

  11. nn says:

I just realised that she looks like this Will Smith’s fish from Shark Tale movie and without any special effects.

  12. Steve's Mrs says:

How can you call a 10 year old a “Creature”??? That’s just wrong. Not nice at all.
So she’s having a go at music, so what!!! I can almost guarantee that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are all over their kids education and allowing them to express themselves, whether its music or acting.
Nobody else went to dance classes, or music practise, or any clubs???
Give the girl a break. At least her parents are there backing her up and helping her!!!

  13. anonymous says:

Listed to the snippet of her new song, seriously somebody needs to send ths screeching brat back home.

  14. devilgirl says:

Good God! Make the Smith’s stop!

  15. brin says:

Ahhh, nepotism rears it’s head again.

  16. Lisa says:

@Denise- I was thinking the same thing.

  17. Leticia says:

There is something creepy about this.

  18. bunkins says:

that makeup on a 10 year old? a bit much.

  19. Raven Sparrow says:

I’m sure she’s getting an education, I don’t see Will letting go of that that easily. I really hate her “whip my hair” song. Really really hate it. But this one seems fun, has a good beat to it. Sure , it’s not a super song but it’s not that bad. I think she’s enjoying herself and she should because she has that chance.

  20. teehee says:

I just had the dishonor of hearing “Whip My Hair” for the first time last week.

    Its an atrocity.

  21. Maud says:

I’m sick to death of tweens and teens singing. Go to school, get out of your own arse, and ‘sing’ when you’re an adult.

  22. sharylmj says:

They are letting her go way too fast. But I have to say that she was on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to promote “whip my hair” and she seems pretty grounded SO FAR… I hope they don’t wreck this sweet little girl by pushing her too hard too fast.

  23. Maud says:

    Or join a choir.

  24. Roma says:

What ever happened to artists having to struggle for their craft?

I’m going to go listen to Bad Religion’s 21st Century Digital Boy instead. Still one of the best workout songs ever.

  25. gabs says:

Willow could teach Rihanna a thing or two.

This sounds like a riri song don’t it?

What disturbs me is the part where she goes “I’m taking you for a ride”. I mean, maybe my heads in the gutter but…seriously? Ri-ri songs as well as other popstar songs use “ride” in a sexual way so its hard for me to see it in a clean way.

They should have stopped with whip my hair and let her go to school. Theres time to be a popstar later! Sheesh. I used to love Will Smith but this bad parenting and nepotism has lost me as a fan

  26. Snackysnaxx says:

I think that “Boys Need Training” shirt is insulting and assumes all boys A. behave like animals and B. exist for the use and benefit of girls. If there was a boy wearing a “Girls Need Training” shirt, especially a FIFTH GRADE boy, everyone would be losing their collective s**t.

  27. Lady D says:

Maud, LOL at her joining a choir. Wonder what her CoS parents would think of that one?

  28. sickofit says:

her parents want her to end like la lohan right? theres no other explanation for this… just sad.

  29. Liana says:

For a minute after reading the title of the song I thought they had remixed T-Rex’s “20th Century Boy” and turned it into someting for this child to butcher. Thankfully that is not what happened.
    ************

cosign. I was scared for a minute.

As for her education – she said: “I never really get to go to school because I am always on tour or with my father. There is a tutor most of the time, but usually I am working so I never get to do the lessons. The worst thing about math is all the kids are ahead of me because they go to school.”

So yeah, not so much “all over her education.”

  30. The Bobster says:

No-talent manufactured “star” thinks his no-talent spawn is talented.

Just let the kid go to school and play with her friends.

  31. Nanea says:

Not only doesn’t Willow get any kind of proper education, the little she gets is sanctified by the $cientologists that run Will&Jada’s school. They all adhere to the principles of $tudy Tech and similar utter bull$**t, as long as it costs tons of money and sounds good.

  32. Catherine says:

What ever happened to talented musicians?

  33. mary jane says:

Neither Will or Jada are casual in their approach to anything……. Willow is their next project.

Jada doesn’t spark much curiousity in the masses so she’s using this little one. I’m guessing they’re hoping for the next Michael Jackson. Broad, global fanbase. Androgynous look. It’s already mapped out.

  34. Rio says:

@Roma- “I don’t know how to read but I gotta lotta toys!”

Wow, she looks JUST like her dad.
That’s…that’s not especially a great thing for a little girl.

  35. Vi says:

@ whatever: DEFINITELY. we should all club together and buy them a video camera. and sign it from “everyone who can hear”

  36. Cherry Rose says:

I like those boots with all the chains.

Otherwise, her fashion sense it atrocious.

  37. Marina says:

Jesus! In that second to last pic she looks just like Will, those are some poweful genes!

  38. WhiteNoise says:

    Ugh. This family….

  39. Runs with Scissors says:

it looks like the 80’s threw up on her.

  40. flourpot says:

Used to be sports and ballet were the after school thing. Now it’s dressing foolishly and masturbating to auto-tune. Pathetic. I’ll happily sit in my little corner listening to indie music instead of the industry-generated shite.

  41. orion70 says:

gabs makes a point with the rihanna thing really. I have a bit more forgiveness for a kid putting out something that sounds like this, rather than a grown “artist” relying on this formulaic crap.

btw, Adam Ant wants his look back.

  42. JO says:

Can not stand Jada, and begining to hate Will too… Jeeze… this kid is terrible.

  43. Str8Shooter says:

No surprise the crap this lil’ Smith is churning out, given the lameness of her Daddy’s ‘music’ and the fact that she idolizes the boring, monotonous Beyonce.

    Stick to your day job…school!

  44. serena says:

    Well it’s not that bad.
I bet all the kids and teenagers are gonna love it.

  45. Hakura says:

I find her annoying… & her songs are seizure inducing. I have to give her credit for being brave in her fashion experimentation, even if she does come out looking like a hot mess.

I’m sure she would never have gotten her foot in the door if she weren’t the child of a celebrity, period. Probably not in any other medium she’s currently working in right now, either.

The girl is only 10 years old… I think Will & Jada have made a huge mistake allowing her into the business this young. They should know better than anyone what sort of things she’ll be exposed to, how difficult it is… She even admitted that her parents don’t make her do school work, because she just ‘doesn’t have time’.

  46. bluhare says:

She’s a good rebuttal to the Scientology based child rearing methods that state you never tell your children “no” and let them do whatever they want, lest you stunt their growth or something. (Vis a vis Surly Cruise.)

Her parents not only should have said “no”, but “HELL NO!!”.

  47. hairball says:

    PUKE.

@Raven Sparrow, I doubt education is a high priority for them. Wasn’t there some article saying she didn’t have time for math because she was so busy?

I am SOOOOOOO SICK of these celebrity kids. Whatever happened to actually earning respect and success through hard work and talent?

  48. Ms_Fu says:

    @Snackysnaxx
I was waiting for someone to mention that. It is offensive, and she shouldn’t have worn it. Double standards abound…

Anyway, this newest song is okay. It’s not my cup of tea and it is definitely generic. She is hard to look at because her clothing and hair is so garish. My sense is as she becomes a little older, the Smith family will continue to put her out so she’ll be like the Kardashians – everywhere.

  49. Praise St. Angie! says:

Hakura, I get what you’re saying, and in the cases of celeb kids that are NOT trying for a public career, I agree.

    however…

she is putting herself out there as a “musician” or “singer” or whatever. she is looking for public consumption, and the public (here, at least) doesn’t like what she’s offering (as a singer), and we have every right to knock her product.

I agree, though, that calling her a “creature” is not very nice, and very unnecessary.

  50. Kim says:

Her last song was terrible- i cant believe she is still making more bad pop music.

I would give her Kudos if she had talent but her voice is so processed by ccomputers/auto tune and still sounds bad that i cant give her a thumbs up. She just doesnt have the chops.

  51. GirlyGIrl says:

Great, now I envy the deaf.

  52. hellen says:

Reminds me of that famous Marcos family party video where Imelda butchered We Are The World. Just STOP.

  53. Kimmy2 says:

There is a rumor that Will Smith and his production company are going to remake “musical Annie” and star Willow as the Annie. I so hope that it’s not true they need to leave the classics alone and it’s sad that he has to produces movies for his kids instead of them trying out for a roll like every one else.

  54. Bopa says:

I think Jada is living her music aspirations through Willow

  55. mymy says:

So the bashing of the male continues via a 10 year old. I have been reading how this is going on in 90 percent of children and teen programing. Girl beats up boy, girl humiliates boy etc and so on. I am sick of it. Would it be alright to do it to any other group? Oh yeah fat people. Men and fat people. The PC crowd has to hate on someone.Glad the Smiths have ties with what they want via mind control of the masses. JZ in known to be on board and she is in his fold. This message is not innocent and this girl is being used by her parents

  56. KsGirl says:

I’m not going to hate on a 10 yr old, no way. At this age, if there is any ‘blame’ to go around, it rests squarely on the shoulders of her parents. I don’t know, everyone has different ideas about child rearing and what’s good and what isn’t, but to me she just seems way, WAY too young to be playing this fame game already. And her parents seem so crazed about it, too.

  57. kiko says:

i don’t have the mental strength to listen this.so i’ll just comment on the damn parrot green eyeshadow that she is wearing.WTF?

  58. JenJen says:

Flashbacks of Madonna. Wait til little Jada starts giving out advice how to be “all that” too. Ugh, I used to like Will.

  59. MrsKrabapple says:

“I can almost guarantee that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are all over their kids education”

How do you “almost guarantee” something? “Almost” means “not really” right? So you’re saying you don’t really guarantee that the parents are “all over their kids education.” What does that mean?

You ever hear these Scientologist speak in pseudo-intellectual terms? Like “the single source of aberration of psychosomatic illnesses, stress, fears, worry, things like that have to do with the reactive mind, and in that part of the mind is different words and commands that can come back to affect you later in your life.” It sounds like they’re saying something, but when you actually go back and look at it, it’s gibberish.

Scientologists really bug me. I waffle between pitying them because they’ve been brainwashed and I suspect most need actual therapy instead of a cult, and being annoyed by their stupid gibberish and pimping their kids out for public attention.

  60. clorismetchum says:

she’s a cutie! and i dont usually say that about those kinds of kids.

  61. Mary says:

Must this little girl insult my eardrums for the next few years. Please go back to school and be a little girl!!

  62. orion70 says:

@Kimmy2…. I think this is the Hollywood equivalent of the parents who parade their kids out during parties and get them to sing or dance, much to the delight (not) of their guests.

  63. hannah says:

nepotism is destroying hollywood in every way possible. i’m not a singer, but for sure, i can sing better than she can, and so can most drunk girls singing karaoke, and they aren’t using auto-tune…so what does that say about this kid? it just is so annoying watching these talentless brats use their last name to get not only a leg up, but given fame and success. I think being spoiled and not having to lose or suffer makes you an incomplete person.

  64. original kate says:

she’s 10 – she should be concentrating on school, not recording crappy songs. if she wants to be in the music industry, fine; she can learn an instrument and sing in the choir or something. she is going to be a spoiled monster if her parents aren’t careful.

  65. e.non says:

must be just great to be a back-up singer/dancer to a friggin tween — and one whose allowance is more than you make in a month.

  66. Rachel says:

Pretty sad that they’re trying to shove this 10 year old girl down out throats. Not only is autotuned voice awful, but she is a totally stylized produced kid who isn’t going to last and probably doesn’t have the life skills to accept that. I wonder if the Smith’s even visit the real world. JAY Z WTF are you thinking.

  67. Ruffian9 says:

    go HOME little girl.

  68. JM says:

Not to sound mean or anything but I predict rehab in this child’s future. Stop trying to be famous at 9! Go to school and enjoy your childhood. You have the rest of your life to be pimped out by your parents.

  69. Canada Guy says:

Let’s not forget that she has people, ADULTS, following her around telling her that everything she does is perfect! That her poop don’t stink.
Pretty much any 10 year old would be soaking this all in and doing exactly the same as her, because she doesn’t have anyone teaching her real values.
She just doesn’t know any better.
    Her parents should, BUT…

  70. Patricia says:

This poor child. Aren’t parents supposed to prevent their children from making fools of themselves??? Jada and Will should be ashamed. This belongs in the privacy of their own home movies and should go no further. I can only imagine what kind of idiot I’d have made of myself if I had been given this much freedom, encouragement, and money at the age of 10. How embarassing…she won’t need to be good at math to figure out her sales figures suck. That ought to make her feel good. Talk about being set up for failure. I hope she grows up to be happy and successful. Her parents are f-ing morons.

  71. blinditemreader says:

Keep making money, little Smith child; you’re going to need it for your therapy bill when you’re 20.

Poor kid has misguided parents with screwed up priorities.

  72. tex says:

Autotuned rubbish. Hardly an accomplishment – even a barking hyena could become a pop star using this software.

  73. Mikunda says:

This last pic is eerie – I had the feeling that it was Will Smith dressed in drag.

Sorry, didn’t mean to be obnoxious or anything, it’s just that the resemblance is… uncanny.

  74. Brittany says:

Dammit, leave it to ‘fashion’ to ruin a beautiful Korean dress by screwing it up and putting it with combat boots.
    (Google Hanbok)

  75. GradStudentEatingHotPockets says:

In a few of those photos she looks JUST like her dad. Like a mini Will but with long, colorful extensions.

  76. ezra says:

She should be playing with her dolls.

  77. lucy2 says:

    Rachel #66 I co-sign your whole post.
I really feel like her parents are pushing this, and it makes me sad. She should be in school most importantly, hanging out with friends, and listening to music and singing for fun, not a career – she is TEN. And they’re hugely wealth, it’s not like this kid is their meal ticket. I really worry for these kids, being pushed into careers in the spotlight before they are old enough to truly understand all that comes with it.

And the song sounds like so many others – over produced pop nonsense. Not to be mean, but it’s not like they’d be depriving the world of some great talent if they held back her career for a few years.

  78. Hakura says:

@Bluhare (46)- Is Will a scientologist? I got mixed answers when I tried to look it up.

@Praise St. Angie! (49)- “she is putting herself out there as a “musician” or “singer” or whatever…and we have every right to knock her product.

You’re definitely right in that statement. I think that’s just one more reason I think her parents are making a big mistake putting her out there this young.

@mymy (55)- I totally agree, about the gender double standard. I know it originally came from an attempt on the part of women to spread the message of ‘girl power’ (a sense of strength as a woman), when the rules of society changed to make women equal.

But… the pendulum has swung too far the other way.

@e.non. (65) – “must be just great to be a back-up singer/dancer to a friggin tween — and one whose allowance is more than you make in a month.

She’s not even a tween…I think ’10’ still falls into the category before ‘tween’, ‘child’.

  79. Jazz says:

She’s ten years old, she shouldn’t be whipping anything, dammit!

  80. Paige says:

she is so manufactured, that could be anybody!

  81. jemshoes says:

Too much, too fast. Every instinct in me screams NO, and I haven’t even listened to any of her songs. She’s a kid – her parents should teach her that being a kid means staying out of the spotlight even if your parents are HW celebrities. Putting her out there / letting her be put out there as a product / brand when she’s so young just seems so misguided and irresponsible.

  82. Someone Else says:

I’ve mentioned Calabasas before (where the Smiths live) — if you’ve spent time there, you’d understand that life revolves around being Most Popular.

It’s truly disturbing how people will go out of their way to out-do each other on any level possible (example: $20,000 on a seven year old’s birthday party). It’s what motivates the people like the Kardashians & the Smiths, so it’s no surprise they’ve wh*red out their children.

What gets me is the arrogant vibe these kids give off. I’m not into child abuse, but I really want to slap that smug look off both Jaden & Willow’s faces, and slap Will and Jada for giving it to them.

  83. RJ says:

To all the people saying “she looks just like her dad”, etc: she’s 10 years old; it’s ok that she’s not pretty like some little pageant queen. Not every musician has to be a model. Not hard to tell which of you were the mean girls in school.
And no I’m not a bitter fan! I’m not even a fan period.

  84. Rio says:

    @RJ

I wasn’t CLOSE to a “mean girl” in school. I was the punky nerd who was always in advanced classes yet the first in class to get tattooed/dye my hair green/etc. The only reason I didn’t get picked on in HS was because no one could figure out my stereotype.

I don’t think it’s so awful to say that- judging by “modern” beauty standards, the fact that Willow looks like her Dad is so bad. Should we be commenting about a 10-year-old in the first place? No. Should a 10-year-old be in a position (ie the public sphere) that there is potential to comment about him/her? NO.
Will Smith is- male or female- a damned GOOFY lookin’ fellow. His daughter, for better or for worse, is being pushed onto us as a commodity with all that entails packaged in. Unfortunately, her looks play into that. Unfortunately in that way, she looks like her dad.

  85. Hakura says:

You do have a point, Rio. It’s been mentioned a few times that making their young daughter into a commodity is opening her up to all kinds of judgment & criticism. That’s the very *core* of all the businesses she’s getting into.

Again, a huge error on the part of her parents.

I too managed to avoid being picked on in highschool, as i didn’t fit into a stereotype either. I hung with a *slightly* gothic (anime-loving) crowd, my very best friends were openly bisexual… I think most people assumed I was too. (I wasn’t, but its not like it’s anyone else’s business anyway.)

  86. RJ says:

    @ Rio
I don’t dispute that she looks like her dad. My problem is with people implying that that makes her unattractive. Having said that, I don’t think that children are all beautiful, and I do agree that there’s something slightly icky and MJ-ish about this girl and her brother going into show biz at such a young age. My problem was with the catty nature many of the remarks seemed to embody, basically, “listen to how shitty her music is, and she isn’t even pretty.” I also find it hard to read such comments and not think of the long history of black women being characterized as mannish or even animalistic. To me, lots of children look somewhat androgynous.
