Reese Witherspoon and her happy, non-controversial engagement news takes the cover of this week’s People Magazine. People didn’t even get a real interview with Reese, unfortunately, but I know this cover was sanctified by Reese. There are some suspiciously pointed comments that are directed at one or both of Reese’s high-profile exes, although I’m not really sure who Reese is trying to hit, Jake Gyllenhaal or Ryan Phillippe. Your guess is as good as mine:

The actress, 34, hit Paris with three of her closest girlfriends for a whirlwind pre-wedding weekend on Jan. 20. Gearing up for her nuptials to showbiz talent agent Jim Toth, 40, Witherspoon – whose Parisian getaway included wedding gown fittings, says a source – has made it clear that she is eager to begin her new life with the low-key Toth.
“He makes her laugh,” an insider tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “She’s truly enjoying her life right now.”
After revealing her heartbreak following her split four years ago from ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, 36 – with whom she shares custody of their kids Ava, 11, and Deacon, 6 – the actress has embraced finding love again with Toth.
“He’s a grown-up who’s really ready to take the next step,” says a Witherspoon friend. “He’s a family-oriented guy, and that’s all she ever wanted.”

“He’s a grown-up who’s really ready to take the next step” – that sounds like it’s directed at Ryan, right? Like, Ryan needs to grow up and stop screwing around. But it could also be directed at Jake too – like Jake wasn’t “ready to take the next step.” Also: “He’s a family-oriented guy, and that’s all she ever wanted.” As in, Reese’s exes were not so family oriented…? I could honestly do this all day – it’s like Ryan Phillippe sending his congratulations to Reese and referring to her as “the mother of his children” – which I over-analyzed to great effect. I could literally talk about these quotes from a “friend” for two pages.

She strikes me as a very intelligent woman…who picks extremely boring roles, for the most part.
But she’s a good mommy, and she deserves a good man. Way to go, Reese.

Im going to go with Jake for the hit…… Ryan is the father of her kids and I think she will always want him to do well since he sets an example for the children and she seems like a smart person in that respect. How much more obvious can it be that she is speaking of Jake since he rebounded with teen Taylor

I want to like her but she seems like an overbearing, control freak, see you next Tuesday. I’ve thought that Ryan was considered a good dad, so that would make him family-oriented, right? If he’s a shitty father, why is she sharing custody? Next, I thought she & Jake broke up b/c she was the one that didn’t want to take the next step. & if the “grown-up” is a dig at that dumbass Taylor, well, that isn’t very “grown-up”, is it?

I am happy for her. I think they were probably dating longer then the official party line indicates because I don’t think she’s the kind to rush into marriage. Is she a hard-ass absolutely but she is also a smart lady and I wish her well.
yeah, she is a control freak, but the good kind….. and arent we all (at least those of us that work for a living) I think her breakup with Ryan was evident because she married him young and shot-gun. Also, He couldnt handle her fame when she won the Oscar and consoled himself with Abby. Im sure Ryan would take her back in a heartbeat. As for Jake…..he is the most annoying male in the business and he was just boy-toy material for someone like Reese. I kinda think she is the real deal or as real as they get in LA.
jrt, ITA. We can only speculate as to why Reese broke up/divorced her exes, but overall she doesn’t really talk about her personal life. I think her “source/friend” was trying to take jabs at her exes IMO.
Good for her. Reese knows what she wants and has her priorities straight.

I think she’s talking about both of them. Jake when she refers to “taking the next step” and Ryan with “family-oriented man”. A family oriented man wouldn’t allow his penis to break apart his family and that’s exactly what Ryan did.
I have always liked her. She has always seemed intelligent and serious. Wonder what she sees in this guy though. Aren’t agents working and focusing all their time on their self-absorbed clients? How does he have time for her? Of course I am only getting my info from Entourage so what do I know.
I was under the impression that Reese was the one who wouldn’t want to “take the next step” with Jake, ie, marriage.
He was always photographed with her kids, going to their games and vacations with them. But maybe it was just a ploy. Who knows.
Love Entourage…….and love Ari Gold even more……..maybe Reese was a fan and let Art flow onto her life….if only life were as fun at that show!!!

@ dread pirate – Because, in the state of CA, “Nothing short of him fornicating with his girlfriend in front of the children, and even, maybe, not even that” will get his “joint custody” reduced to “sole custody.” Hate it, but that’s the way it is in this beautiful, no-fault state of ours (insert heavy sarcasm here).

She seems like a sweet, classy, level-headed lady that puts her family above all.
Typical passive aggressive remark coming from Reese’s camp. When she admits any of her own flaws they always sound like the kinda response you give during a job interview when they ask, “What would you most change about yourself?” You always respond something like, I work too hard, or I’m too creative and am always thinking of new ideas. But when it comes to poking her finger at her ex’s, it’s always a lot more negative. jrt, I don’t think Ryan would have her as a gift.

I like her. She is an admitted control freak (i.e., her production company is named “Type A” productions). Whatever, she is an Oscar winner, appears to put her children first and doesn’t seem to introduce them to numerous “uncles” like some actresses. She deserves as much as anyone to be happy and be her usual homebody self. Plus, I think it was a swipe at both the past guys. Who of us has not said something like that when we met the right one and went “oh, that’s what he is SUPPOSED to be like.”

Ugh… Reese’s camp needs to shut up. She needs to take responsibility for her own short comings and stop pointing the fingers at everyone else. Ryan was all of 24 when she pulled the ol “oops I’m pregnant” baby trap. She led Jake on for years and just wasn’t that intrigued by him because she prefers a guy who’s a pompous a&&.
Perhaps she realized that outer beauty can only go so far. Ryan and Jake are good looking guys. Jim, maybe not so much. However, Jim may have high intelligence, family values, a decent moral compass, loyalty and maturity. All these characteristics way are better, IMO, than being a pretty boy.
Ryan Phillippe has been a consistent loving father for almost 12 years. He was young and probably didn’t want to get married but he did and he did his best. Reese only takes the stick out of her ass long enough to smack him with it. Then she reinserts it. She should try talking about her “blessed life” without taking a swipe at the father of her children. Bitch.
