  1. normades says:

George Clooney is Cary Grant, and Cary Grant was bi

  2. brin says:

I think she meant Carrie Fisher.

  3. crazydaisy says:

    nice bod. 🙂

  4. mln76 says:

I like Jake (except for the whole weird showmance with Taylor and the strong possibility that he is Toothy Tile) but there is not any comparasion to Cary Grant. Natalie is committing unforgivable blasphemy.

  5. Sigh. says:

    @ brin —

X*D (<= me with a tear in my eye from laughter).

Soooo sick of actors proclaiming another is a reincarnation or extension of an actor (actress) whose hard work and persona/image has STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. It cheapens the legend, and makes both of the actors look needy for validation. Let the AUDIENCES draw that comparison/conclusion. I’m VERY protective of my Old Hollywood studio system stars, so shut that sh!t up, Nat.

Cary Grant = class and versatility personified (with a GREAT head of hair, from jet black to cloud white in his later years).

Gyllenhall = Quirky McQuirk. He’s good. Not Grant good, though.

  6. Kaboom says:

Jake always gives the impression that he had a recent concussion. At least he’s prettier than his sister.

  7. bagladey says:

@Kaboom Maggie Gyllenhaal is plain but she’s a good actress. Jake however, is no Cary Grant.

  8. truthSF says:

    @ Brin:
Ding! Ding! Ding! Winning post of the day 🙂

That baby must be taking all of the intellect portion of Natalie’s brain. Jakey is the Cary Grant of our generation…WTF?!!

  9. Tess says:

    Kaboom and brin: hilarious.

And so is the comparison with Cary Grant. There just is no comparison between Grant and this boy-man Gyllenhaal.

And that’s not to get into their sexuality. Grant set up housekeeping with Randolph Scott…but let’s not go there.

The point is, Grant was intelligent, suave, debonaire, sophisticated, subtle. He seemed BIG in a way that Gyllenhaal does not.

  10. Bubulle says:

“Jake Gyllenhaal is the Cary Grant of our generation? Um… that‘s what Natalie Portman said. For the last time, Cary Grant wasn‘t gay!”

I’m kind of offended by this sentence. Jake G is not the new Carey Grant because he doesn’t have his charm and screen presence. It has nothing to do with his sexual orientation.

  11. Kitsie says:

Nobody will EVER equal Cary Grant – he epitomized class and style. Best movie ever for me was Notorious with Ingrid Bergman – the kissing scene on the balcony overlooking the beach at Rio – smokin…..

  12. Elfie says:

I don’t get this… When he was doing promo for Prince of Persia everyone was over him, I think he was even in HGF but I’m not sure. But now, everyone keep saying he is gay and all. I know that showmance with Taylor killed his hotness but.. yep..

And I still love that shirtless photo.

  13. Riley says:

I kind of wish I could have JG haircut in the top picture. It gets hot where I live in the summer and I think that would be the perfect cut for me. Also, I’d like to say Way to Go Barbara Bush. I think that is kind of spectacular.

  14. KJ says:

Um, the answer to that riddle is NO.

For someone who went to Harvard, Natalie Portman has a habit of saying really dumb things. I don’t think she’s a dumb lady – she’s obviously educated – but she definitely has that kind of celebrity hubris that tells her she can say things without actually thinking about them first. Just because he called you Audrey Hepburn (another dumb comment), doesn’t mean you have to fellate him in the press with an off-base comparison. Just call him a great actor and friend and call it a day. Jesus.

  15. guesty says:

Didn’t Jakey just compliment her eyebrows & say she was so Audrey Hepburn? So now she’s returning the compliment. *gags*

  16. jane16 says:

    brin, ROFL!!!

What a ridiculous comparison. The weirdest things come out of Natalie Portman’s mouth.

  17. Truthzbetta says:

The bi part, sure. In no other way does any part of that comparion make sense.

Jake’s never looked gayer than the shirtless pick, my ‘dar is off the charts.

Main thing: Grant was suave. Born broke and learned how to woo heiresses and make it look like he lived in a tux when he wasn’t tanning poolside cracking witticisms. Ultimate star. Call Jake G suave and someone wil hand you a dictionary.

  18. Mshuffleupagus says:

    Bubulle:

I’m pretty sure Kaiser was making a …*checks website*… joke.

  19. heatheradair says:

    BLASPHEMY.

Agreed that Clooney is about as close as we’ve come, but Jake…..?!?!?!?!?

Natalie – I’ll cut you a break cuz you’re flippin high on HORMONES, but no, love, Jake G is NOT our generation’s Cary Grant.

  20. Rita says:

I’d appreciate someone recommending a good movie with this Cary Grant guy in it. Is he European?

  21. Mistral says:

Stella is so pretty. Hopefully she takes after her dad in the brains department.

  22. mln76 says:

@Rita he’s english but in most of his movies he plays a suave american.
I can’t narrow down one film a huge chunk of his work is brilliant some of my favs are His Girl Friday, The Awful Truth, The Philidelphia Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace.
I also highly recommend his work with Hitchcock each one of which is a classic-Suspicion, Notorious, To Catch a Thief , and North by Northwest.

  23. Angel says:

That’s her opinion, and everybody has right to have their opinion.

But no matter what she says some people who don’t have anything smarter to do will laugh. And not beacause it’s funny. That’s sad.

Because they are evil and mean ewww

(And they never heard for karma) Hahahah

  24. KJ says:

So if you make fun of the people who make fun of Natalie Portman for not having anything smarter to do, does that mean you’re even LESS smart and MORE sad for not having anything smarter to do than poke fun at them?

If a big dumb tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?

  25. Rita says:

    @mln76

Oh, that Cary Grant. Thanks love.

  26. jzhz says:

Wait a second. These people are way too early in their careers to be proclaiming things like this. A woman who just starred in that POC movie with Ashton Kutcher has enough clout to call someone who dated a tween a “modern day Cary Grant?” Whatever.

  27. Megatrona says:

I wouldn’t touch him with a sterilized ten foot pole, gross

  28. whatevergaylord says:

That fug gaylord should just off himself and get over with. Please spare us.

  29. Marjalane says:

    @truthzbetta
I thought the same thing- that shirtless pic looked like it belonged on gay match.com!

  30. Nicky says:

I know I’m going to get a new a-hole torn in me for this but whatever. I know the guy’s perceived as being gay because of rumors or because in some people’s minds he may fit a certain stereotype but none of us know which way he swings and we’ll probably never know. Some of the Jake posts lately seem like an excuse to be vindictive about his sexuality and it’s gotten worse since the whole Swifty thing. Fine, the guy screwed up by faux-mancing a singing Barbie doll with a banjo and it backfired and everyone’s entitled to their opinion about him but can we cut him some slack? Seriously, some of the comments left in these posts are plain homophobic and it’s not helped when lately almost every post written up about Jake seems to emphasize how gay he is when no one actually knows either way.

  31. jzhz says:

    @Nicky – well said!

  32. Camille says:

Puleese, Clooney *wishes* he was Grant. There is no comparison between either of those guys with Cary.
Cary Grant is in a league of his own.

  33. icantbelievethis says:

@Nicky ITA and we wonder why actors stay in the closet.

This is why I can’t stand Ted C and others. And I think its funny so many people believe Ted C’s ‘stories’. Yes, JG is gay and has a hidden baby (toddler now?) with some OTR star.

As for the comparison to CG, no clue, never watched CG. However JG didn’t compare himself to anyone, it was just Natalie’s opinion and he did kind of look like CG in the Vanity Fair picture (which is what I think they were going for).

  34. Nancy says:

All you gay guys can think about is making fun of women!! Jealus, Jealus!

  35. Bubulle says:

@niki I’m also more than annoyed with all the homophobic comments around here and surprised none seems to care. Though I’m convinced Jake he’s gay and wish he could stop with all this fauxmances I though he was better than that.

  36. Crash2GO2 says:

    LOL @ Rita!!

  37. galaxy.girl says:

No one can Compare to Cary Grant, he was so suave, talented, agile, artistic, amazing.

John Barrowman from Torchwood is the closest I have seen. Please add him to HOT FRIDAY. Where do we make hot friday requests? I love Cary Grant.

  38. susie says:

Actually, George Clooney is the closet we have to Cary Grant, no? A younger version could be Zac Efron maybe.

Jake is today’s version of a young Rock Hudson, if the rumors are true.

  39. Quest says:

Is a guy gay because he hasn’t knocked up some chic or haven’t married? I honestly don’t think he is gay, but he is a good actor

  40. mln76 says:

@nicky I agree with you on some of the comments there is a big difference between questioning sexuality and whether he is lying to the media (perfectly fine gossip fodder) and making homophobic slurs(despicable).

  41. lilred says:

@ whatevergaylord: Totally harsh and uncalled for, no need to suggest someone kill themselves to spare you/us.

  42. Str8Shooter says:

Where do they come up with this shit? He’s no Cary Grant! There will never be another like him…George Clooney probably comes close, but Jake? Seriously??? Looks like an overgrown frat boy!

He’s an OK actor. That’s about it. And I’m pretty sure Cary Grant, who was the epitome of class, graciousness, male beauty and an amazing actor would NOT have done back to back movies based on a videogame or an erectile dysfunction drug!

  43. Ally says:

I join the Um, No chorus.

Gyllenhaal barely registers with the moviegoing public as a Star! and he has none of Cary Grant’s charm, charisma, comic genius, and lovable, effusive onscreen energy.

I love me many Cary Grant movies, but this is one of my favorites of his onscreen moments. Watch from 5:22…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5IK5KlW42Y&feature=related
When he walks across that hall, I almost pass out every time.

Jon Hamm in his Don Draper garb + the comic talents he displayed on 30 Rock could approximate the effect. The problem is, no one anymore is writing/directing/editing the kind of dozens of marvelous movies Cary Grant got to star in. It won’t matter how marvelous an actor you are, when the material is so mediocre.

  44. crtb says:

George Clooney is today’s Cary Grant.

  45. Ari says:

I miss his Donnie Darko look

  46. It’s certainly refreshing to find a nice little blog such as this where we all can share personal problems without fear of ridicule. I’m fairly sure a number of my friends will definitely be glad after I tell them all about it as well
