Helen Mirren in gold Jacques Azagury: adorable or dowdy?

These are photos of Helen Mirren at the London premiere of her film, Brighton Rock, which is apparently a remake. Anyway, Helen wore this pretty gold Jacques Azagury dress with a simple little black cardigan. Plus, she was showing off her newly shorn hair. I caught a glimpse of Helen’s haircut when she showed it off at the Golden Globes, and it honestly looked like she had taken a weed-wacker to it. But at the premiere, it looked much better, so I’m not hating the hair. The Daily Mail has more:

Helen Mirren showed she still likes to live her life at full throttle when she revved up on a scooter at the London premiere of Brighton Rock tonight.

The 65-year-old was was looking glamorous in a gold Jacques Azagury dress gown and matching gloves and stilettos as she posed on the machine to promote the film, which is set amongst the battles between Mods and Rockers in the resort in the Sixties.

After posing for photographers, Helen, who landed an Academy Award in 2007 for her portrayal of Her Majesty Elizabeth II in The Queen, tipped Colin Firth for Oscars glory this year for his role in The King’s Speech. She told reporters: ‘I think he deserves it, and I think he will get it.’

The actress – who plays tea shop manager Ida in the remake – joined other stars of the film on the red carpet including John Hurt, 71,and rising British stars Andrea Riseborough, 29, and Sam Riley, 31.

The movie is based on Graham Greene’s classic 1938 crime thriller, but unlike the 1947 original film adaptation that made a star of Richard Attenborough as Pinkie Brown, the action has been moved forward to 1964.

[From The Daily Mail]

Ooooh, she thinks Colin is going to win the Oscar! Of course he is, but now he’s been anointed by THE QUEEN. I wonder if Helen and Colin run around in the same circles? Probably not. But that would be lovely.

Regarding Brighton Rock – apparently, Helen really pushed for this remake, and this one might be truer to Greene’s book…? I’ve read some Graham Greene, but not this book, so I have no idea what else to add. Here’s the trailer:

I love her soooo much…she looks great, who can really hate on this woman, she is unbelievably adorable – an iconic beauty.

  4. Tess says:

She should avoid standing in this outfit… very dowdy when upright.

But on the bike, I like…colors good, hair good, makeup good.

  5. SolitaryAngel says:

She seldom gets it wrong…but when she does, YIKES.
    >_<

  6. lilred says:

Not feeling the cardigan. Otherwise she looks lovely.

  7. Maud says:

Bad. The gloves leave me speechless. Anyway, I thought the rule was that only Joan Collins could ever wear gold anything.

  8. baum says:

    dowdy? never

  9. Anna says:

Minus the cardigan, it totally rocks. I love the gloves!!

  10. Hakura says:

Ugh. I’d like to see it without the gag-inducing gloves. They’re just so 80’s… & gold… I’m physically opposed to them. Otherwise? I think she looks lovely.

  11. happygirl says:

I adore this woman! I think she looks fabulous, and I LOVE the shoes! You go girl!

  12. gabs says:

Its Helen Mirren. Doesn’t she get a free pass on fashion for being such a badass for so long? I love the pic of her on the bike!

  13. Frenchie says:

as long as she doesn’t talk, I’m OK

  14. serena says:

except for the gloves, it’s beautiful.

  15. devilgirl says:

    Horrible outfit.

  16. Jackson says:

Dowdy. But she is still beautiful, and the shoes are great.

  17. Solveig says:

She looks like the Tin man from the Oz’ movie, only in gold. Even the nose is the same.
    Love her, though.

  18. Emilie says:

I hate the gloves, and I don’t like the flared skirt. It might have been nicer as a straight skirt? But I think the gold color looks fabulous on her. Especially the shoes!

  19. khaveman says:

Weird gloves. Otherwise not too bad. She has gorgeous hair, so why so short? Anyway beautiful lady.

  20. Arianna says:

    bleck the gloves…

  21. spinner says:

She is magnificent & can do no wrong in my book.

  22. Vi says:

can’t stand helen mirren. something about her just screams vanity to me.

  23. scout says:

@gabs – in total agreement with you!

I love the outfit (well, except for the gloves IMHO.) And she dresses age appropriate – which does NOT have to mean boring! So, she jazzes it up with some glitz – good for her! She looks great and we can all only hope! 🙂

  24. guesty says:

    dowdy.

  25. Donna Wingfield says:

    Hate the gold.

  26. Stubbylove says:

    A rare miss!

  27. kathug says:

I would like this outfit a lot more if it didn’t have the gold gloves to go with it. But I do loooove the shoes! Girl knows how to work ’em heels

  28. Bodhi says:

ditch the gloves & it would be lovely! Not that the gloves make it awful… She Helen Mirren & can do no wrong!

  29. SassyOne says:

Ghastly. Every single thing about it. Just dreadful.

She herself, looks great though, par usual.

  30. Lynda says:

Love it all but especially the shoes.

  31. Nanea says:

Don’t like the gloves and would have preferred a straight skirt.

    But hey, it’s the Queen!

  32. KLO says:

    This outfit sucks.

  33. Mistral says:

Don’t like the gloves with no pantyhose look. (At least, I don’t think she’s wearing hosiery). It’s a nice outfit except for that.

  34. Patricia says:

The hair, makeup and jewelry are gorgeous and absolute perfection as usual.

The outfit would have been better without the gloves or the black lace thing. The dress is enough.

But as my mother says…she’d look good with a turd on her head.

I just love her no matter what!!!

  35. mdf says:

How weird is it that I’m 33 and I have girl crush on this woman? She’s proof that women can still be sexy beyond 50! LOVE her.

  36. Reece says:

Get rid of the gloves and it’s perfect.

  37. Pirouette says:

I never considered the relationship between gloves and hosiery. Are they mutually inclusive? Does anyone wear “pantyhose” anymore?

  38. REALIST says:

    Strange-not her style.

  39. Tee says:

Love the whole thing. She always talks about wanting dresses that hide her upper arms (which probably explains the cardigan). This looks great on her, it’s different and original but at the same time age appropriate. She works it 😀 She could wear anything and I would still love her.

  40. Jenny says:

FABULOUS! I wish I could wear gold glives every day!

  41. I really like and appreciate your blog post.Really looking forward to read more. Great.
