Fox’s ‘Fringe’ vs. ‘Bones’ (mild Bones spoilers at bottom)

The new Fox series Fringe got a lot of buzz as the second coming of The X-Files, and is getting pretty good ratings so far.

It helps that Fringe has the primo timeslot Tuesdays after smash-hit House. TV Guide reports that Fringe retained 90 percent of House’s 14.8 million viewers.

Fringe’s success is coming at the expense of Bones, according to Bones star David Boreanaz. The crime drama stars Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan and Boreanaz as Agent Seeley Booth, and used to have that coveted Tuesday timeslot. Bones now airs at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, followed by the limp comedy ‘Til Death.

Bones won its timeslot for its 2-hour premiere on September 3, averaging 9.7 million viewers. It was the highest-rated season premiere for the show.

Despite the strong ratings, Bones’ Boreanaz, formerly the vampire-with-a-soul on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel, is not happy about the switch.

National Enquirer reports David is so unhappy he’s jeopardizing his job, but he doesn’t care. “David is mad as hell,” said a network insider. “He feels betrayed and is telling everyone about it.”

Bones has had steady ratings since its debut in 2005, but Fringe comes from proven hit-maker J.J. Abrams, creator of Alias, Lost and Felicity.

Fringe follows a misfit team as they examine paranormal phenomena, like The X-Files but without the aliens or David Duchovny.

Mocking FOX’s decision to move his show to Wednesday night for the untested newcomer, Boreanaz said bitterly: “Let’s pimp Fringe, which makes no sense, about some disease that’s taken over an airplane!”

Then, he added sarcastically: “Cause that’s unique!”

David realizes his harsh words could come back to haunt him.

“They should’ve just kept us with House, the outspoken actor declared. “That was a great combination.”

[From National Enquirer, print edition, September 29, 2008]

Enquirer got these quotes from an interview Boreanaz gave to Entertainment Weekly, adding the adverbs “bitterly” and “sarcastically.” David continued to say, “Now, we’re the lead-in to ‘Til Death. God, what a mess. But they have to spread us out because they have to develop new shows, I get it.”

————–Bones Spoilers————–

Boreanaz says he wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not brought back for next season. Hopefully, Booth will at least get to finally sleep with Bones before he’s killed off.

Plans may even be in the works to ease in David’s replacement.

Brendan Fehr, recently of Samurai Girl, has been cast as Booth’s younger brother Jared on the November 19 episode. TV Guide reports Jared “gets on Booth’s nerves but hits it off with Brennan.”

Unfortunately, neither show is all that good. Fringe has no spark like The X-Files or Lost, and Bones jumped the shark with last season’s finale making Zack a psycho, and jumped it again with the lame season premiere with Bones and Booth in Britain.

Fringe is a very entertaining show so far. Not quite as good as X-Files, but it’s got a lot of potential. Good acting, tight writing, and an intriguing conspiracy-theory plotline that advances each week.

I’ve never watched that other show. Looks like another CSI type show to me.

  2. anony says:

When the hell is CSI Vegas back on? I gotta see it. And is Bones worth watching?

He might be bitter but I love that actor. LOOOOOOVE. Ahh.

  3. Darlene says:

Bones is a fantastic show. I started watching it on TNT this summer from the beginning and am totally hooked. Yes, I have NO idea where that whole Zach/Gormagon thing came from, but aside from that, the characters and their relationships are among some of the best on television. I hope they don’t kill off/send away Booth. I’ll stop watching. The show is all about Booth/Brennan.

I’m watching Fringe too. It’s holding my interest – barely. They should be happy I love Joshua Jackson so much.

  4. Carrie says:

David Boreanaz should leave Bones. Than he should pick up the phone and call Joss Wheaton and tell him they need to make a series of Angel movies!!

  5. Anon says:

Bones used to be my fav TV series but they completely lost me with that horrible season’s finale. It was like watching sockpuppets played by a 13-year old girl. Who was drunk. And has ADD.

  6. Sol says:

Im waiting for Fringe to premiere in Argentina. It has two things i love Joshua Jackson and JJ Abrams.Loved Felicity and love Lost!!I watched Bones on the first season but then stopped watching,i didn’t like some of the changes they made.

  7. Margie says:

Clearly, FOX isn’t doing too well promoting Bones. I have watched the show since its inception, because I’m a fan of Kathy Reichs, who created Temperance Brennan. But I didn’t even realize that the season premiere was Sept. 3. I guess I’d better start watching as this will probably be the last year. Oh, I was sorry to see Zak’s character take such a slide last year, too.

  8. breederina says:

I watch both, loved Bones but got to agree the whole
Zach going over to the dark side scenario really didn’t work. Fringe is starting to roll more Lost and less X-Files, and I realize I’m alone on this, but I absolutely hated Lost. That show annoyed me almost as much as Prison Break.

  9. Sara says:

The Zack/Gorm. plotline could have worked out had they given us a proper setting and clues. I’m actually not that much upset over Zack, as much as I adored the guy.

However,I am truly pissed as how they “tried” to end the Gorgie arc. It was my FAVORITE thing of the whole season. Yes, the writers’ strike shortened the series but that was just lame. Did it hurt to prolong the arc to the 4th season? I don’t even know if the actor playing Zack wanted to leave “Bones”. Did he? He could’ve gone home with the burnt hands and be done with it. Why try to wrap up a brilliant story arc?

Either way, I’ll still be watching “Bones” and am sorry that Fox is doing this to the show because as long as the chemistry between Deschanel and Boreanaz endures as it has, “Bones” will never jumped the shark, as far as I’m concerned.

And Fringe, well…kinda good, I guess. Slow start but Pacey and his father are totally worth watching.

  10. Maples says:

since both of these shows are about scientists (and I am a scientist) I have to say that Bones is the better show. First of all, Bones is about actual science and Fringe is about “fringe science” (i.e. made up stuff that has the credibility of fairy dust). Second, I am against all portrayals of “evil” scientists in the media. Both shows score low in this department: Bones had the Zach/Gormagon fiasco and Fringe has a team of evil scientists. I still say Bones wins, because it is believable that a single individual can be bad, but to make up a whole team of evil scientists as the motivating factor for your entire series is just weak. In closing, support science funding so that I can sit at my desk and comment on celebrity blogs instead of doing experiments.

  11. Hollz says:

    lol Maples.
I’ve never heard of Fringe…but I don’t watch much TV…just the shows I already know about- I LOVE Bones, I have the first two seasons on DVD and am impatiently waiting for season 3 to come out (not until November 🙁 So i’ve still got a bit of a wait )

  12. nycmom100.. says:

Love love Fringe! Very tight cast. The actor that plays the father is delightful. Folks here may night like it, but as new shows go; Fringe is a tv programmers dream.

  13. Spike says:

Big Bones fan, but after the season finale and the absolutely horrible season opener I’m done.

As for Fringe, I really like the characters. I watched the first 2 episodes. Last night dragged so I switched to The Mentalist. Hmmmm Simon Baker!

  14. Nat says:

Bones is awesome! I love it and the season finale was incredible! I hope it never changes. I have to admit though without David the show wouldn’t be as good. Brennan and Booth go so well together in the show. If they lost that, it wouldn’t be even close to as good.

  15. Alarmjaguar says:

Love Bones! I think that they would have done a better job last season if the writer’s strike hadn’t interrupted, but the rest of it is great!

  16. Jeanne says:

Re: Bones, like him, hate her. I just don’t see the chemistry between them, too forced, too fake.

  17. rottenkitty says:

It’ll be a cold day in hell before I lay one more eye on ANYTHING JJ Abrahms is involved with. After being jerked around by LOST for two seasons, I realized that he has no idea where that show is going. Abrahms has admitted that he doesn’t care about narrative, just the mystery. If there was ever a bigger “fuck you” to a viewer than that, I don’t know what it is. (I have nothing against mystery, but eventually they need to be solved.)

Personally, Alias meet X-Files doesn’t sound like my cup of frothy cappucino anyway. Hell, Lost is nothing more than Gilligan’s Island “brought up to date.” Yeesh.

  18. Jaclyn says:

    Fringe will never beat x-files!

  19. rottenkitty says:

Oh, I forgot to mention, been watching Bones since the get-go and I think it’s a swell show. Uneven ocassionally, sure, but few shows aren’t.

  20. Syko says:

I refuse to even watch Bones because I love Kathy Reichs’ books so much, and in my opinion the show has messed up Tempe. I’ve gotten to where I hardly ever go to a movie or watch a TV show if I liked the books they are based on, because nothing stays true.

  21. breederina says:

Syko one great exception to that is Clint Eastwoods “Mystic River” IMO so much better than the book. Absolutely nailed the time, place, people etc. Just a great piece of work based on an okay book.

  22. Michelle says:

We now have both shows on tv in Australia, love Bones, Brennans detached persona and Booths soul.
The interaction between them is what makes the show plus the science.
Fringe slow going to get into, oh please don’t go the way of Lost or X Files, Lost only kept my interest for first season then felt like being manipulated by the writers and X Files after about 3 seasons had run its course.

  23. heather says:

I love Bones and have watched it since day one. I don’t think that the enquirer knows what they are talkng about when they put in “David’s opinion.” Did you know he is supposed to be directing an episode this season? If they are allowing him to direct an episode, how could his job really be in jeoprady?

  24. Steph says:

If they ‘kill off’ Booth there’s no show, so if they want to lose viewers, then they’ll succeed. They can’t kill off Booth! It makes no sense, the whole show revolves and around Booth and Brennan’s partnership. If Booth goes, fans go, it’s ratings suicide!

  25. Johanna says:

Your way off, Fringe & Bones are brilliant.

    YOUR SPOILERS SUCK!

  26. Hazy says:

wtf?! the “spoiler” is obviously not worth much and neither is your review. Bones is a great show that is very much about the characters, especially Booth and Bones and the writers are not stupid enough to get rid off any of them. I loved Zach but he wasn’t a major character as far as I’m concerned. Bones fans need to be more loyal to the show not rip on it on a bogus site!

  27. sminor28 says:

I love bones never like fringe, I was very upset when they move bones to wednesday. I don’t watch anything other then bones, and if booth leaves that would just be stupid of the writers. booth and bones are partners you slipt them up theres no show, they don’t need to be in love they are partners and they work great together.

  28. bones fan says:

    A. Bones is amazing and i hope they keep davi boreanez..hes a great actor, and i dont tink anyone else could carry that role and have the show survive.

    B. Fringe is also good…kind of out there and a bit of over acting but still enjoyable. ive always liked jj abrams and ive always been a joshua jackson fan so there you go.

C as far as time slots are concerned i understand why the network decided to mix it up…they wanted to promote a new show. it makes sence. but i understand davids point. plus bones and house was a great combo..and i hate waiting till thursdays to watch it now!!

D anyone who actually pays attention to bones will realize that the season finale with zach being a phhyco was genius especially if you kept watching the next season and realized that hes really not…so suck on that.

    thats all.

  29. Watch Fringe says:

Well I have watched both now and I like Fringe much better.

Fringe is like a reality sci/fi 😛 don’t know how to describe it else. Like it could really happen in our lifes too we just don’t know it yet:P and that genre i realle like.

Bones was also good but didn’t got me really attached to it.

  30. Bubba says:

Bones is clearly a chic flic.
    It is sooo rediculous.
    Gag!!
Jesus, those 2 need to get a room and be done with it.
Week after week all we get to see is bones and booth flirt with each other.
What a worthless waste of airtime.
