While most parents would be concerned about their barely 16-year-old daughter dating a 20-year-old, Billy Ray Cyrus couldn’t be more supportive of his daughter Miley’s relationship with underwear model-turned-country singer Justin Gaston. The pair have been spotted together everywhere from church to a Pussycat Dolls concert- with her dad’s blessing. In fact, Justin has been staying at the Cyrus family home and even performed alongside Billy Ray at a concert for Miley’s 16th birthday at Disneyland.
Billy Ray Cyrus doesn’t have a beef with his 15-year-old daughter Miley dating 20-year-old aspiring musician Justin Gaston.
“He actually reminds me a lot of myself when I was 20-years-old and I was living and searching for the dream,” Billy Ray tells Access Hollywood of the model (and former Nashville Star contestant).
“He’s got a great heart and soul, and a lot of determination,” Billy Ray added. “I think that’s the true measure of a man, is when you measure his heart.”
Gaston and Cyrus have gotten cozy since they were first linked together last month.
He was spotted attending an L.A. church with her family and supported her at Disney’s Concert for Hope, where she performed.
Most recently, he serenaded Miley at her pre-Sweet 16 bash at Disneyland this past weekend.
That’s just the problem, if you ask me: this guy IS a man, while his daughter is still a child. No matter how rich and famous she is, Miley is still a young girl, and you have to ask yourself why this 20-year-old is hanging around. The whole thing is creepy beyond comprehension. I’m a parent of a daughter who is nearly 14 and there is no way in hell I would let her date an older guy. But I guess when your daughter is an almost billionaire, she calls the shots. I’m sure if Daddy told Miley no, he’d be off the payroll. It really is a train wreck in the making, isn’t it?

A four year age difference isn’t much between adults – my puddin’ pop is nine years my elder. But a four year age difference is HUGE when you’re a teenager. Think of the person you were when you were 16. Now think of the person you were when you were 20. Even the gap between 20 and 24 is substantial. But 16 – 20? Gross.

Not everyone spreads them at 16. It’s sick that her dad is promoting this relationship, but it’s not like he can stop her. By remaining positive, he keeps the ability to stay close enough to catch her when she falls. It’s the closest thing to an excuse I can create for him.

The dude is FOUR years older. The California law states THREE or more years will get you jail time. It does not matter if the age of consent is 16 in certain states, the point is if the CHILD (yes, still a child until declared adult, check that link again) has sex with someone THREE or more years older than her, it is statutory rape.
Her boyfriend is four years older, so while you may think she is old enough to consent, he’d still get jail time. Do your own googling, before you speak about things you are not aware of. It’s not just about sex guys. Even if they never have sex, there is something to be said about a young girl getting mixed up in a more mature relationship with someone who is, well, a man. Teenagers don’t need to have the drama of adult relationships. The difference in relationship experience and life experience is probably huge at this point, and the opportunity for manipulation is also there. Despite how much maturity and sophistication you may gain as a child star, and despite how immature 20-yr. old guys tend to be, there is still life experience that only age will bring.

Although I can understand everyone’s concern over a typical 20 year old man and an almost 16 year old girl, as long as these two are being monitored most the time, not much should happen. How much time do you think super-star Miley is actually alone (for security reasons if nothing else)? I think Miley has real talent and will be one of the few tween stars that make the leap to adult success (Hilary Duff among others have not found that transition so easy), and this relationship could be as much for show and publicity as anything else. Miley is a huge star for Disney, but is anxious to start being accepted as more of a young adult and by dating a 20 year old man helps build that image. In truth, I actually doubt it’s a real relationship.

when I was 15, my best friend was a 21-year old male. Mere months after I turned 16 we started dating…and go figure, it was COMPLETELY legal…why? The age of consent here in Canada is 16 federally. (In my province it’s actually 14 for a few more months- I’m pretty sure it’s going up to 16 in 2009) Frankly, I think that it’s ridiculous that people think that there is so much of a difference in 16 year old girl and a 20-something male- because maturity-wise, they are about the same. Um i would like to say something in favor of miss cyrus and the young man in question. first off down south age of consent is 16, remember she lives there too. also just because he is 20 does not mean he wants just sex from her, i was 17 when i met my kids’ father he was 33 we were together almost 2 years before we became sexual and trust me i tried lol.
