Rebecca Black did not become a millionaire from that annoying viral song – yet

There was a lot of buzz yesterday over the fact that Rebecca Black, the cute 13 year-old who put out what could be the most annoying viral song to date, Friday, was laughing all the way to the bank when it came to iTunes sales. According to Billboard magazine, those stories came from a mistaken calculation by Forbes magazine, who estimated that Black had sold 2 million downloads of Friday (at 70 cents net to her a pop) on iTunes. Black has only sold around 43,000 downloads though, which is still good money but it’s not like she’s going to be able to retire before she’s a freshman in high school.

Contrary to several media reports, Rebecca Black is not netting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the more than 33 million YouTube views of her uber-viral video “Friday” or its digital sales. However, she’s not doing bad.

The 13-year-old is netting roughly $24,900 per week from track sales of her surprise hit song, according to our calculations. It’s the start of a great college fund, but she’s not making the kind of money from iTunes sales that some writers have estimated.

Forbes.com erroneously reported her digital iTunes sales at 2 million — a figure that was picked up by other publications. Forbes has since posted a correction.

So how many tracks is she selling? I’d estimate less than 40,000 in the U.S. last week and probably more this week.

Here’s why: On Tuesday morning, “Friday” ranged from #33 to #42 on iTunes and #95 at Amazon’s MP3 store. For the sake of argument, let’s say “Friday” is #42. In recent weeks, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the #42 overall track would have sold approximately 43,000 units. “Friday” was released on Tuesday, March 14.

Black appears to own the copyright to her sound recordings — the label is listed as “2011 Rebecca Black” on iTunes and Amazon MP3 lists “2011 Rebecca Black” in the “copyright” field of the song page. And for distribution, it appears Black is using CD Baby, which takes a 9% commission. Finally, take out 9.1 cents per track for mechanical royalties to the music publisher (“Friday” was written by Ark Music Factory, according to media reports).

Here’s the math: 43,000 tracks at $0.70 cents to the artist minus a 9% distribution fee, minus 0.91 cents apiece for mechanical royalties equals $24,900.

She may be pulling in a bit more money from YouTube views if she had the foresight to set up a content partner agreement before she got 30 million views. If so, that could amount to $15,000 to $20,000 for her 33 million views.

Yet for all that, “Friday” does not seem likely to sell millions. Keep in mind that Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” has sold about 1.65 million units in the U.S. in four weeks, and its official YouTube video has 23.5 million views. Those are huge numbers, even for an established pop icon with a massive marketing and promotion campaign in addition to a successful international tour.

But there’s a huge difference between Gaga’s 23.5 million views and Black’s 33 million views.

Black is a novelty artist who will have a difficult time turning curiosity and derision into actual sales. “American Idol” cast-off William Hung comes to mind as a comparison.

Black has certainly done remarkably well for an independent artist, but she won’t put up Gaga-like sales numbers.

This article smacks of condescension as it’s from Billboard and they’re peeved that any artist could independently sell over a million copies and get 37 million views (and counting) on YouTube without signing their first born over to the recording companies. They’re throwing shade on Black because they hate that they’re not getting a cut. Now that we’ve seen Justine Beaver, this chick, and countless other kids get semi-famous on YouTube you can expect plenty of copycats. Some actually have real talent and potential and will maintain the majority of control over their careers. That’s the real kicker for the recording companies.

Those non-recording contract kids aren’t doing that well anyway according to bitter executives, although they wouldn’t make much more under a major label even if they did sell millions. Artists under a typical recording contract can get less than 5 cents per download as opposed to the 70 cents that Black makes. The real money is in touring, which is why you see top selling artists like Lady Gaga busting their butts on the road and running themselves ragged trying to cram in gigs.

    I don’t know. I know the song is horrible, but I say good for her. It doesn’t feel right to make fun of 13-year-old girl for… acting like a 13-year-old girl. In all truth, her horrible song sounded a lot like that Justin Bieber song “Baby” to me, just less polished, which I guess just goes to show that I’m getting old and that it all sounds the same to me anyway.
    Let her take her money to go to college or put in a savings account and keep doing her thing. She’s a child and she seems to be having a good time, so good for her.

  3. Yeah, I didn’t love this song, but your take on the whole thing really makes me smile. It’s funny to hear them calling her a “novelty act.” Probably right. She might go farther, she might not, but it’s funny to hear them getting worked up about it.

    I seriously don’t get why clean-cut songs like this get slammed when songs by the likes of Eminem and other gangsta wannabes that sing about, please pardon the language, “hos” and “motherbeepers” and “sliding up into” girls rate not even a ripple on these news sites? Sure, the girl’s singing sucks and she sounds like Fran Drescher in The Nanny singing with that nasal voice, but the lyrics are fun. Its not a song about shooting up people or deriding girls as “skanks” and “hos”, nor is it talking about people banging their own mothers or eating fetuses (ala Eminem with the last one). Give me a wholesome, clean, clean-cut but bouncy fun and and pretty dumb lyrics, over the trash that is put out by some, any day. The song doesn’t pretend to be a great lyrical piece of art, its just a fun song. Not sure what is so remarkable about this song, when other trashy and violent music are apparently deemed ‘normal’. Give me this clean fun song any day (of the week). The only thing I don’t like is the music video. She’s 13 and they’re cruising around in a car? The only people who can drive at that age at your parents. I doubt she and her friends would be cruisin the ‘rents. And the seedy looking middle-aged rapper in the song cruising with young children, its just wrong stuff to put in a 13 year old child’s music video. Sorry for length.

    Go Rebecca, she seems like she’s having alot of fun. The song is kind of lame, but its clean and innocent so I’m not going to knock her for it.

    god, imagine when you were 13, and you could have had your OWN song with your OWN video. How cool is that?

    I find it bizarre that the media decided to jump all over this kid and try to humiliate her- that bitch from ABC was just NASTY! Anyway, the song sucks, but damn- there are so many songs out there that suck just as much and no one rips on them. I’m glad she’s making some cash off her song. Screw the haters.

    Don’t like it–don’t listen to it!
    It’s just another song in an endless list of choices that you can decide to listen to or not listen to.
    It’s not like it effects any of us in ANY way. We didn’t fund her video, so it shouldn’t make any difference.

    Here’s the thing – I agree it’s not the best idea to make fun of a 13 year old girl. But She (and her mother) put herself out there. You put your child out there in the limelight, regardless of her age, there will be critics.

    Beiber was what, 14, 15 when he came out? Don’t tell me he didn’t have people ripping on him at that point. You want to “be a star”, be prepared for the backlash, particularly when you are terrible and the only reason you’re famous is the same reason William Hung had his 15 minutes.

    Excuse you, Celebitchy. As someone who worked closely with Billboard once upon a time, I know that Billboard isn’t “peeved” about Black being successful. Billboard regularly reports on and champions indie artists achieving success. The writer gave informed analysis about whether her sales indicate the real start of a career. Billboard sees artists come and go all the time. Interesting how when Mr. Peoples pointed out how other publications made a mistake, you call him “condescending” instead of giving him credit for noticing the error.

    Touring itself isn’t very profitable for most artists, that’s why labels have to provide “tour support” in their contracts, it keeps artists from losing money.
    Technically, the reason touring can be profitable is merch sales.
    The real money is in songwriting & publishing. Be very picky about publishing deals, young writers! Some writers sign over their entire catalog (meaning half their potential writing income) to companies that do nothing with the songs once they have them.

    I saw her on Leno, and she brought up the “fact” that she’s “only 13” so many times I started to wonder. The more I looked at her, the more she looked like a 20 yr old in school girl clothes. I know that isn’t probable, but it was distracting.

    The child CANNOT SING. The Billboard people are not bitter nor are they condescending. She IS a novelty act. It has nothing to do with them being peeved about recording contracts or whatever. She has no talent. I dont care for Justin Bieber’s music but the young man can sing, has talent and charisma and can dance. I highly doubt Billboard ever said Bieber was a novelty act. No one in that industry has any respect for her because she has no talent-she’s done no work to get this. She didn’t even produce her own video like a lot of underground rappers do. Her song and music video were bought and paid for by her mother.

    The video is a cheap piece of crap, and the song sucks. The girl has the personality of a wet mop-much like Ali Lohan. Her mother is pushing her out there in front of the masses to be eaten alive. I feel sorry for the girl.

    Her song is on the same viral level as the Bed Intruder or Double Rainbow or Chocolate Rain songs. It’s popular because it’s BAD, not because it’s even marginally good.

    My friends were playing this all through the weekend, and the only way to get this annoying song out of my head is to immediately watch Charlie Sheen’s song afterwards. She makes Kesha look like a good singer-just how bad do you have to be to warrant that amount of autotune?

    Teenage sensation Rebecca Black was found dead in her home in Anaheim Hills, California today. While Orange County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the death, an officer at the scene did say “It has all the signs of a suicide”. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department refused to comment any further on the matter.

    Black, 13, was best known for her instant internet hit song “Friday”, the parents have yet to say whether they suspect her suicide is related to her sudden fame.
