Green Lantern trailer/scenes released: is this movie going to bomb?

lantern1

A confession: I’m not a comic book person. I don’t judge those who are comic book people because, let’s face it, I have my weird little quirky interests too (cop shows, cheesy detective books, photos of Ed Westwick’s moob fur). We all have varied interests, and none of us have to pay attention to anyone else’s interests. Well, unless you’re being paid to write about it.

So… that’s my explanation for not knowing anything about The Green Lantern other than A) the fan boys love the superhero, and they are fickle bitches when it comes to adaptations of their stories, B) Ryan Reynolds was cast and C) There’s a lot of green, everywhere. So I sat down and watched the just-released super-full-length trailer (it’s a compilation of scenes shown at WonderCon over the weekend)… and… WTF? The Green Lantern comes from the planet Jar-Jar Binks? Did not know that.

I like that the first thing I heard was Mark Strong’s voice – it’s so distinctive and sexy. I also think Ryan looks pretty good too. Buff, but not “Are those muscles CGI?” buff. The part where his eyes turn green is kind of awesome. Oh, I also like how sketchy and trashy Peter Sarsgaard looks! He’s the villain, it seems? Nice. He always does awesome character work. And here’s what I love: Blake Lively is barely in this junk! Just one little fast edit of her opening her mouth (“acting”).

So… is this movie going to bomb, or have the fan-boys been appeased? Honestly, from what I can see, I think The Green Lantern will end up doing pretty well financially. The one that I’m worried about is X-Men: First Class. My poor Fassbender!

Here are some photos of Ryan at CinemaCon last week in an excessively shiny blue suit. Is he overcompensating for all of the green? I don’t get it. Also: the crotch on those pants is so tight, he looks like he has a vagina.

I am a HUGE comic book nerd. I’ve got tons of friends who are also fans, but have gotten so upset at how over-exposed Spiderman, Superman, and Batman are. (Personally, Batman is my fave.) Anyways, I think the fanboys are going to come out and this is going to do really well. Tons of underground Green Lantern fans. I don’t think it will do as well as Batman, and it certainly won’t be winning ANY Oscars, but I think it’s going to be a good, solid film, and I will definitely be going to see it :)

I love the comics and the movie trailer is looking good. (Don’t lay down the wrath of bloggers as I say this)- Ryan is looking hot…ah mean. Anywhohow, I think it will do well at the box office.

My husband and brother are in their 40s and 50s, terribly normal, everyday men who go to work, put in their time, work hard and are completely non-frivolous 90% of the time . . . but damn, if this trailer didn’t make them recite the Green Lantern’s credo by heart from some distant, long ago memories. :) I think this must mean there are loads of closet Green Lantern fans out there, and they are going to see it.

The Hugh Jackman X-men are as far as I can go in this genre, but I think the pics of R.R. in his tight suit were delightful, thank you very much!

Wasn’t excited about this one until seeing that trailer.

I think it should do just fine. (I’m a sucker for a half-decent cb movie though)

At first I was flashbacking to Star Wars, Jar Jar Binks and company…But something about the trailer got me pulled in and I am far from a Ryan Reynolds fan…but why couldn’t the Fassbender be human so we could enjoy his hotness?

John Hamm has got the art of draping his penile region down to perfection, so to speak. Reynolds needs to seriously rethink his ridiculous trousers if he wants to go commando.

Hey all. LONG time reader, first time commenter here.

I am a MAJOR comic nerd, and think that “Green Lantern” has hit the character and concept well out of the park. RR was a great choice for Hal Jordan. I just hope your average movie goer will be so enthralled…

    “Beware my power” indeed, bitches!

@operagirl – I love that story about the guys reciting the oath. That’s great. I was not really interested in seeing this movie until I saw the trailer but I am stoked about it now. I am a fan of Ryan Reynolds.

    Color me skeptical.

The nerds I know roll their eyes at RyRey and the girls I know think swooning over RyRey is a waste of time, myself included. I don’t think we’ll see this in theaters, unless we get treated to the tickets somehow.

Still needs a little polishing. How about the part where the GL’s all chant in unison, like drunk frat boys at a football game?

  23. Jilliterate says:

Well, geeks are never going to be happy with anything — I know, I’m one of them. Personally, I think enough stuff looks like it might have been altered to piss off the actual fans of the comic, but I don’t think it’s necessarily going to strike a chord with the regular movie-goers either. Green Lantern, although popular, isn’t the most accessible series. All the alien stuff comes off as kooky for anyone who isn’t hella geeky. I think that combined with the uncanny valley-CGI is going to leave regular movie-watchers unsettled.

Besides, Ryan Reynolds comes off as too…sassy to play Hal Jordan. Nathan Filion should have had the part.

hm. Still not impressed. I’m not really a fan of Ryan. I mean, he’s alright. A little boyishly plain faced and his body is good. But he’s not exactly that great of an actor. To me, he kinda just plays Van Wilder in different costumes.

Speaking of, you all know that the suit isn’t real, right? It’s all cgi’d. I’m sure they modeled it after his body and all but…it still isn’t really his body. And I honestly cannot believe how bad the mask looks.
