Glee creator Ryan Murphy apologizes to Kings of Leon for telling them to F off

Ryan Murphy
Ever since Glee creator Ryan Murphy got into a public bitchfight with one of the artists who refused to license their music to the show, I’ve really soured on it. I haven’t kept up with Glee and whenever I catch the show it smacks of try-hard and sensationalism, with the characters seeming like stereotyped cardboard cutouts. I don’t know if Glee changed, if my perspective did or a little of both, but I’m surely not the only one who decided to stop watching the show as a direct result of Murphy’s petty behavior. Well Murphy seems to have received the message. He recently apologized for telling Kings of Leon founder Nathan Followill to F off. Instead of barking back when Foo Fighter singer Dave Grohl called him out for being so petty about artists refusing to license their music, Murphy backed down and praised them, saying it was their right and that he would still listen to their music.

“F**k you, Kings of Leon,” Ryan previously told The Hollywood Reporter of Kings of Leon after they turned him down. “They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture.”

Then, Nathan Followill responded to Ryan Tweeting, “Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra.”

And next up was Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl speaking out against Ryan saying, “It’s every band’s right… F**k that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee.”

Well, Ryan is now backing down and apologizing for his comments.

“I didn’t speak with as much clarity as I would have liked,” Ryan explained to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday of his comments. “Who am I to say ‘F**k you?’ That’s not what I meant. I completely understand when artists don’t want a show or another artist to interpret their songs. In fact, I respect it. It’s their personal work and I’d feel the same way. We get turned down all the time and I’ve don’t fight it or even go back after a rejection.”

“I’ve never felt that if you don’t give Glee your music, there’s something diabolical about you,” he added. “To the contrary: I support artists and what they choose to do… I think Kings of Leon are cool as shit. The Foo Fighters are brilliant. We’d love to do one if their songs, if they were ever interested. But if it’s not their thing, then OK. I personally wish them luck will still listen to their music.”

And Ryan said he’s learned an important lesson out of this fight.

“Don’t say f**k you to someone in the press,” Ryan joked. But seriously he said, “I’m really proud of the fact that we can introduce songs to younger kids or their parents because I’m the biggest music fan. The show is about the love of performing and arts education — things I think are very special.”

And it sounds like Kings of Leon may have accepted Ryan’s apology.

“We’ve been trading texts and emails and I support them.”

This was the right thing to do, particularly since Grohl really had Murphy’s number and listed out the many ways that he’s been juvenile and petty with artists up until this point. It doesn’t mean I’m going to go back to watching Glee again, though. That ship has passed.

glee is freaken LAME! i don’t blame anyone for saying NO to them. plus murphy is an asshat. ew.

  2. Hautie says:

So apologizing 3 months later is not really a great thing.

It is more like he was forced to do it.

Ryan was way too self righteous, when it all happen. Telling them all to f*ck off.

I tend to think Ryan’s nasty little comments, may have lead to other bands to saying “NO” to his request for their music.

So here he is giving some lame ass… half ass… apology. Three months too late.

  3. embertine says:

Ha, have not enough people been watching your show, Ryan? Poor baby.

  4. Matt says:

I completely agree CB. I found Murphy’s retort to Kings of Leon to be pathetic, however I feel the show is getting stale now. The charaters feel hollow and contrived, Glee is over IMO.

  5. NancyMan says:

I get the sense that the ship has passed for at least two, if not three out of three, of the people in this article.

  6. Violet says:

The glee ship has sailed for me too. Not because of Ryan Murphy though, I mean if I stopped watching every show with an asshole producer there might not be much left I imagine but Glee is just not very good. I don’t think it’s going any where though; tweens and teens adore it so it’ll be around until Lea Michele jumps ship to play a stripper with the voice of an angel or something.

  7. mln76 says:

I’ve only ever watched the Madonna episode that was cool and I love Jane Lynch but I felt like I knew everything I needed to about the show after that. Ryan’s immature fight with KOL only highlighted how gimmicky and lame the show seemed to me ( and I love a good musical by the way.) I am glad Ryan finally apologized but it’s a little too late.

  8. Jacq says:

Hey, Murphy, if that was how you really felt, you would have said this in the first place. You confirmed what I believe that you truly think in stating that those thoughts have never passed through your head. I wonder how much it pained him to take back his “Eff you” statement.

  9. Marjalane says:

I’d love it if FOX were to shitcan Glee and give Jane Lynch her own show. I find this guys apology pathetic, it’s more than a little obvious that he’s trying to recreate some good will towards the show, and the sad thing is, it’s the show that sucks! Not the off-stage backbiting!

  10. Eve says:

Totally agree with Hautie’s comment. Half-ass apology…and too late.

  11. Lala11_7 says:

I guess Ryan didn’t want none of what “Dave” had to serve up…

Man, if I were Ryan…I just would have kept my pie hole shut about the whole thing…

  12. EdithP says:

Yes, I can see how we all misinterpreted that “f*ck you”. Of course it didn’t MEAN f u, it meant “oh my dear, it’s perfectly alright if you don’t want to let us use your songs”. Give me a break. Ass.

  13. Kloops says:

This is an act of desperation. The show’s sinking and he knows it. It was always clear it had a short shelf life, but I don’t think RM realized that.

  14. lucy2 says:

I love when people go on a rant and then say “I was misquoted” or “that’s not what I meant”.
Glad he apologized, but I think it’s mostly due to the backlash he got, and why wait so long? Looking for press again?
I was really annoyed by the show around that time, and that whole hissy fit was it for me, I quit watching and don’t miss it at all. Still love Jane Lynch though and am happy for her success, but the rest? Eh.

  15. curmudgeon says:

I am a huge fan of musical theater and I have never much liked this show. No hatred, just meh.
To me its like Kidz Bop does Broadway.

  16. jay says:

Do.not.evah.fuck.with.Dave. He’ll tear you a new one and take your family jewels as well.

I know Dave can be a bit much sometimes and it isn’t necessarily his “fight” but he was spot on; Murphy just got Foo’d.

Glee is being exposed for over ambition and ego, along with their creator. They could still rein it in and continue a bit longer by returning to some semblance of character development, and I’m not even a watcher, having only seen a couple of episodes. But, with the internet and availability of info, it’s pretty easy to keep up.

Murphy needs to reevaluate and observe all those that came before him in this game; nothing lasts forever, especially if you get a big head.

  17. JustBored says:

Dave Grohl whipped that little bitch Ryan Murphy into submission. LOL. I don’t think we would have had an apology if Dave hadn’t stepped in and given his two cents. Maybe he though Kings of Leon was easy to pick on…Prick.

  18. Iggles says:

I stopped watching. When I heard they were going to make Blaine bi because fan girls thought he was hot, it lost all integrity with me. I didn’t watch the episode when he kissed Rachel, and I don’t care that he’s with Kurt now (they drew it out way too long and killed it).

The multiple Gwyneth appearances, the lazy/one dimensional characterization, the fact that POC characters have yet to be fleshed out TWO seasons in, and the gimmicky “latest record” shtick has run old.

It’s way past it’s prime. The show only exists so they can sell records on iTunes!

  19. Venus says:

Ever heard the expression: “A day late, a dollar short.” Yeah, Ryan Murphy, you’ve already showed your a$$. I know exactly what kind of petty egomaniac you are. The belated apology doesn’t change that.

  20. original kate says:

meh. i think he only apologized because of all the bad press he was getting. plus dave grohl ripped him a new one and i think it hurt.

  21. Maks Back says:

    Asshat Factory
    RE: Ryan Murphy

    To Whom it May Concern:

    He got Foo’d.
    Don’t get Foo’d again!

  22. CoffeeTalk says:

I think dave grohl was being a super-ass by going on a profanity laced tirade about something that had nothing to do with him. He was being juvenile and petty by out-of-nowhere slamming Murphy way after the Kings of Leon thing had died down. Why am I the only one who sees this? Does everyone else just think “oh Dave is so rocknroll! He cusses about stuff! Yea!”

Anyway, I don’t think Murphy is honestly apologizing in the slightest. he said what he said, and now hes trying to backtrack way too late. if he was going to apologize, he should have done it ages ago. This smacks of “my agent told me I had to”

  23. jover says:

RM needs to read the comments on boards like these if he’s to rescue his sinking ship – these shows last on characters – and character development – not schtick as everyone has said. It’s interesting how a prior generation of shows – think cosby, seinfeld, friends, cheers, fraser, hell, even the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, lasted much longer and with far fewer gimmicks so early on in their respective runnings. Granted, times and attention spans have changed, but today’s hollywood doesn’t have the writing talent overall and that’s why glee turned gimmicky, famewhoring, and stale so quickly, and why fans are jumping on it – is rm so delusional that he can’t see this.

  24. Sam says:

all of those rockers that “hate” glee can hate glee all they want. but let us not remember that at one point, if u were a metal head with a metallica t-shirt, u were the one being picked on.

it’s not about a musical, and it’s not about a tv show. it’s about using music to show children that they are all worth something, that even if they are different they are important to the world.

I think that both the glee creator and the bands lost site of what the real issue is.

  25. garvels says:

It is about time he apologized for his juvenile and hostile comments towards these talented artists.

  26. Amanda G says:

I watched the first few episodes of Glee and the singing is absolutely atrocious! They did a cover of Kanye West and it was so so awful. If I were an artist, I wouldn’t want my song anywhere near this show!

  27. hoganbcmj says:

Ya, I feel like Ryan Murphy is turning into a gay douche. I mean, good for him for backtracking, but what was with his attitude in the first place? And though I don’t see what the big deal is about giving Glee the rights to your music, the other side of the coin is if you wrote it and you control the rights, you can do whatever you bloody well want with them. If you don’t want a bunch of auto-tuned young pretty people popping up your beloved rock tunes, that’s your prerogative. I gotta say, though, if it was me I would totally just take the money and say go for it. I’m shallow that way.

  28. maybe says:

Glee – YUCK. Ryan Murphy should check himself before making statements to the public. Not everyone wants to join the dork club.

  29. marisa says:

I admit, I used to watch Glee, now I’m over it. Watching that show is like eating a ton of candy: a shitload of sugar, and an hour later nothing to show for it. I’m a huge KOL fan, and I applaud them for not selling out by letting Ryan use their songs. Of course now he gives a (too late) apology. Sorry dude. Don’t have a hissy every time an artist tourns you down. The tantrums were a huge reason that I quit watching.

  30. MsCatra says:

We loved the first season of Glee, but the second season totally lost the heart the first one had. Too many theme shows, gimmicks, and guest appearances, plus every damn plot line is solved within one freakin show. We kept watching, though, hoping it would go back to what it was, and I think it’s starting to. There seem to be some actual plot lines developing. Yay!

As for RM, yeah, he’s an asshat totally trying to save himself.

  31. Jamie says:

curmudgeon, that’s the same deal with me. I LOVE musical theater, but I could never get into this show.
