Michael Shannon on his Superman Zod casting: “I’m on acid!”

Much to the delight of fanboys (and girls) everywhere, the cast of the Superman reboot is quickly coming together; and since Kaiser mentioned that she’s received some Hot Guy Friday requests for Michael Shannon, his crazy eyes, and the rest of him too, it’s probably not a bad idea to cover this story. It’s also rather refreshing that Shannon, to his very own surprise, has been cast as the villainous General Zod in the upcoming Superman reboot.

The addition of Shannon only adds to the inexplicable amount of Oscar power for what is essentially going to be (arguably) a throwaway comic-book movie. Amy Adams, who shall play Lois Lane, has been nominated thrice (for Junebug, Doubt, and The Fighter); Diane Lane, who’s been cast as Martha Kent, has earned one nomination (for Unfaithful); Kevin Costner has won twice (for his directing work in Dances With Wolves); and Shannon has been nominated once (for Revolutionary Road). So much wasted talent, right? On the other hand, these blockbuster movies carry higher salaries than the indies, so perhaps it’s truly overdue that a superhero movie would hire real talent instead of, you know, Linnocent. As for General Zod himself, Shannon has displayed a rather disarming “Who, me?” approach to being cast in one of the most sought-after roles in Hollywood:

Michael Shannon, who was cast as villain Zod in director Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, still can’t get over the fact that he is now a part of the franchise.
“This ‘Superman’ thing is ridiculous. It just came out of nowhere,” he said during an appearance at RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, notes MTV.com. “I was talking to my agent … she’s like, ‘How about ‘Superman’? I’m like, ‘What?” The idea that I would ever be in ‘Superman’! I’m like, ‘Are you serious?’ ”

When he met Snyder, Shannon said he was “seriously sitting there and he’s telling me, ‘You can’t read the script, so I’m just gonna tell you what happens.’ And he spent a half hour telling me every scene in this movie. He’s at his home in Pasadena and I’m looking out — there’s the Rose Bowl, there’s little hummingbirds flying around. I’m like, ‘I’m on acid!’ ”

Snyder eventually decided Shannon was perfect fit. To convince others, he had Shannon and Henry Cavill (who plays Superman) do a reading together. “They said, ‘You have to come back because we want to see if you and Superman have chemistry,'” Shannon recalled.

He got the part a month after their reading.

His thoughts of Cavill as Superman?

Said Shannon, “I think this guy will be all right.”

Here’s a video clip of the same interview, and I was immediately struck by how different his real-life voice is from the character that he played in Revolutionary Road, and I love that he was genuinely shocked to even be considered for the Zod role. Now, we just have to wait and see if Zack Snyder puts all of this talent to good use or just turns it into another one of his CGI circles of hell.

LOVE him! Seems clever and humble.

  2. brin says:

He is a fantastic actor. He is amazing in Boardwalk Empire and I think he will be great in Superman.

  3. Kaiser says:

Ever since Bedhead & I talked about him, I’ve been having sexual fantasies about him. What is about the crazy-eyed ones?

  4. Melanie says:

He certainly has the jaw line for it.

  5. gloaming says:

Saw this earlier this morning and with his addition to an already stellar cast, this is shaping up to be a great Movie.

  6. Eve says:

    All kneel before Zod!

Ugh!, I’m such a nerd sometimes.

I heard it was going to be either him or Viggo Mortensen — being both great choices for the role (in my opinion) I immediately considered watching this (not usually a fan of DC Comics heroes or Zack Snyder, but I may watch this after all).

As for Shannon being a constant request for HGF posts…I’ll try not to judge anyone else’s taste but I have to say he really creeps the hell out of me. I swear that if I crossed paths with him in an empty place or street, I’d turn around and run for my life (just in case).

  7. silken_floss says:

@ Kaiser: The crazy eyed ones are usually batshit insane in bed LOL 😉

  8. Stubbylove says:

This guy scares the living crap out of me – love it. Did anyone see him in that movie w/Ashley Judd called Bug? That will creep you out for days. He’ll be an awesome General Zod!

  9. TQB says:

Great news! BTW, I renew my request for Henry Cavill for HGF. He is pants-dropping hot and going to be AMAZING as superman.

  10. brin says:

    I second TQB’s request!

  11. Lala11_7 says:

I had ZERO interest in this updated Superman series…too soon after the one with Brandon Routh, which I LOVED (minus the camp of Kevin Spacey…I mean, WTH?!?!)…

However, seeing Michael being picked to play Zod? I AM ALL IN!!! I’ve seen everyone of this man’s movies and even remember the bit part he had in “Groundhog Day”…

    Can NOT wait!!!

  12. Tiffany says:

Note to self…See this Zod, no wait, Superman movie.

  13. Tar says:

I’m just excited that they are redirecting the character … He’s such an awesome villain. He has big shoes to fill, but every part I see this guy in, he brings the psycho freak hard, so he has the potential to be awesome!

  14. Amandahugandkiss says:

I think he looks more like the big guy who played Zod’s muscle man.

I’ll be saying ‘kneel before Zod!’ for the rest of the day now! 😀

  15. Solveig says:

I’m not a fan of Superman but I loved Zack Snyder’s The Watchmen and 300, and I love Michael Shannon too. How amazing was he in Revolutionary road? His performance was overwhelming, I fell in love with his acting skills.

  16. Cleo says:

I thought this guy was Matthew Salinger when I saw him in Boardwalk Empire.

  17. I Choose Me says:

I’m already picturing him in the role and I gotta say as much as this ‘remake the shit out of everything trend’ crazes me, I think he will make an excellent Zod.

  18. harfang says:

I’m totally a fangirl but had no interest at all in the Superman remake until I found out about this. He is going to be So. Freaking. Good. I know him from the Runaways movie, and I swear it’s not just because I’m a Krisbian that he impressed the bejeezus out of me. He’ll make an awesome supervillain.

It is so rare, and refreshing, when multiple forces in Hollywood make a somewhat left-field casting decision that makes you go “that’s perfect!!” This is almost better than when Ron Perlman, the 54-year-old Jew, became an action star in the first Hellboy.

  19. JenJen says:

This guy is a great character actor, look for him and you will see him in alot of movies.

  20. MaudeLebowski says:

This guy is perfect! Who’s going to play Ursa?

  21. Eve says:

This is almost better than when Ron Perlman, the 54-year-old Jew, became an action star in the first Hellboy.

    @ Harfang:

But Ron Perlman was always the first choice for playing Hellboy — especially when we consider that the character itself (the one from the comics), or its looks, were based on Perlman’s facial features in the first place. The good — and surprising — thing about that is the fact that the producers went with Mike Mignola’s (creator) and Del Toro’s (director) decision of having him, and not a major star that would probably ruin everything.
