Winona Ryder hitches her star to a James Franco movie

rydersags2

I can’t help but root for Winona Ryder in her hopeful career resurrection. She gave a very (intentionally) disturbing performance in Black Swan and is a truly talented actress even though, inevitably, she’s “not the ingenue anymore.” Still, I think she can keeping doing the Hollywood thing so long as she steers clear of future mindless projects like The Dilemma, which not only possessed no redeemable value (unless you consider a Kevin James/Vince Vaughn buddy movie to be culturally enriching) but also underperformed at the box office by failing to earn back its budget. In short, the acclaim following Winona’s turn in Black Swan has helped her earn back a few of her former stripes (and seriously, she was punished far too long for one shoplifting incident, whereas Lindsay Lohan keeps getting chances). To maintain this good will, Winona will have to be very careful about what projects within which she participates. For the moment, she’s erroneously selected a James Franco movie:

James Franco will star with Winona Ryder in The Stare, a Jay Anania-directed film that is the first project funded by Waterstone Entertainment, a new producing/financing company formed by producer Jeff Kalligheri and Texas real estate developer and producer Steve Bowen.

Watersone gets started with The Stare, a drama in which a playwright (Ryder) finds her mind beginning to warp as she struggles to launch her next production. She’s plagued by dreams and visions of being watched, but can’t decide if she’s at the center of a manipulative plot or simply losing her grip on reality. Franco plays one of the performers in the playwright’s production. The film will shoot May 6 in New York. Franco is producing with Jolivette, with Kalligheri exec producing with Steven Garcia, Rich Hill and Eric Amadio. Franco previously starred in Shadows and Lies for the film’s writer-director Anania, a teacher of Franco’s who heads the directing program at the graduate film school at NYU.

[From Deadline]

This can’t turn out well, for Franco himself has abruptly fallen from “critical darling” status to “moody, pouting diva” after he thumbed his nose at the Academy with a lackluster Oscar hosting gig and subsequent social media tantrums. In light of Franco’s recent revelation of his true colors, I think it’s a serious mistake for Winona to star alongside him at this turning point in her career. She needs to back out of this one and hold out for brighter pastures, which (if anything else) do not include Franco’s self-referential, cutesy ways that everyone has had enough of for now except, just maybe, on “General Hospital.”

her eyes are crazy. drugs, maybe?

  2. carrie says:

her trouble is that she was totally crazy in love with meds and she’s seriously unstable

Dicaprio’s BFF Lukas Haas has the same trouble!

  3. mln76 says:

I love her and I will watch this movie in the theaters if this will help her comeback. James Franco is annoying as hell but at least he is a good actor.

  4. the_blonde_one says:

I loathed her for about five minutes during that shoplifting thing. What a time of innocence that was for all of us, having the ability to be shocked by someone doing one thing wrong. I miss those days.

With the exception of those five minutes I’ve ALWAYS loved every.single.thing about her including her eyebrows. In short, I have nothing to add about the movie sign on but needed to chime in anyway.

  5. kazoo says:

i want her to talk shit about gwyneth. she must have some juicy stories. that i can get behind.

  6. scotchy says:

hmm the plot sounds suspiciously like black swan set in the theatre world…..not sure about this move.

  7. danielle says:

James Franco might be annoying, but he’s still a good actor. Just watched Date Night, the part with him and Mila might have been the best of the movie.

  8. spinner says:

She looks maniacal. I think she had her eyelids done & now, forever looks like she was just startled. Big mistake on her part.

  9. Mary says:

I guess having multiple lights flashed in your face as they take these pictures wouldnt bother anyones eyes.
    I wish her luck.

  10. original kate says:

i love me some winona and i respect her for dropping out for a while to get herself together. yay nonni! now, for the snark: i agree that yes, her eyes do look different (lift?) and i also wish she would talk smack about goop.

  11. Ron says:

I totally diagree with this post. Franco is coming off being nominated for an Oscar already. Nominated. This post makes it seem like he’s transitioning from GH. Please. So he wasn;t a great host of the Oscars and will never be Tom Bergeron. Whatever. Let it go. As for Winona, she really is a nice woman and so talented. I am happy to see her again and hope this goes well for both of them.

  12. beth says:

    whoah, her eyes…
    seriously, it was plastic surgery?

  13. Sue says:

scotchy:@ Your right the plot does sound like black swan.

  14. margaritachum says:

on my mind she will always be kim and will always be in love with edward.
i can’t hate this girl. i always root for her.=)

  15. KJ says:

Look, as douchey as Franco is these days, he’s not a bad actor. He was heartbreakingly adorable in Milk. Wait and see what the movie is like before demanding she distance herself from it. James Franco isn’t going to star as James Franco in it, I’m pretty sure.

  16. curmudgeon says:

    Sorry folks.
I have to dissagree re the acting chops of WR. She was always cute until they started casting her in period pieces. Anyone remember Dracula? Performance was cringe worthy. Crucible? Fingernails on chalk board. Not the movie, just Wy. The first time I saw her do anything besides quirky teenager that was worth a damn was Girl Interrupted.
I don’t wish her ill, but she is not Kate Blanchett. She incites nostalgia I think. Sure I will blasted, but whatever.

  17. Bodhi says:

Ditto Ron. Franco has a long, long way to go before he falls from “critical darling” status. I think this was a good move for her to sign on to a Franco movie, people will watch it for sure

  18. Camille says:

@scotchy: I agree, thought so myself.

I’m not sure this is a good idea for Winona. I love her and wish nothing but the best for her.

As for Franco, well, his last film flopped badly, so who knows how his career will go from here on out.

  19. mln76 says:

@curmudgeon she was pitch perfect in her Oscar nominated role in the period piece the Age of Innocence. The Crucible was just a god awful movie even Daniel Day Lewis couldn’t save it. As for Dracula I love that movie!!

  20. wunderkindt says:

WR looks crazy. She used to be really cute and ‘together’ looking. Wonder what happened because this isnt just the aging process which has made her look change.

    Just a guess: Drugs?

  21. Mary Jane says:

    I’ve ALWAYS love my Winona…
When I used to do phone sex, one of my “characters” was “Winona…”
SO glad to see her back again but PLEASE paps, stop with these bug-eyed pics!

  22. curmudgeon says:

    Min76
Have to disagree on Age of Innocence too. I thought it was painful. Dracula was fun but WR was so bad it became comedy. You didn’t notice it because K. Reeves was actually worse. Just my opinion. No hate. I think it was partly the accent. American actors do this bizaar, half British half old school accent in period pieces when they can’t sound like contemporary Americans and it often doesn’t work. Its not really Wys strongest skill.
Again, just healthy hate free debate. No flame wars please, I cry easily. 🙂

  23. Smize says:

Her crazy eyes + Jason Lewis’ crazy eyes = Love.

  24. Reality says:

I understand that this is an opinion piece, but the way this article is written sounds a bit presumptuous.

She’s “hitching her star to a James Franco movie”? How, by simply staring in a movie with him? Not every actress is so mercenary, and her choices in the pass suggest she’s not just looking for blockbusters and acclaim.

“Franco himself has abruptly fallen from “critical darling” status to “moody, pouting diva”?” According to who? He’s an Oscar nominated actor with loads of promising projects lined up, so he’s still a critical darling as well as a diva.

  25. Kimbob says:

I like Wynona, and think she is a brilliant actress. Also, I don’t see her “hitching her star” onto Franco. Wynona Rider’s name is still a headliner, in my estimation. She did do great acting in Black Swan. Also loved her in Girl, Interrupted.

  26. Liana says:

James Franco is still well regarded as an actor. He’s just looked upon as more of a douche. But he’s still very much in demand on both sides of the camera.

  27. harfang says:

Those aren’t crazy eyes, those are “oh sheeit i am not used to being on the red carpet anymore and i am nervous and i hope i look ok” eyes. The role sounds like a lot of fun actually, maybe that figured into her decision. But I also hope she will back out; or if we’re lucky, Franco will have some sort of hissy fit and leave for a laughable reason of his own, and Winona can keep this apparently-decent starring role maybe.

  28. normades says:

@kazoo: yeah, she should totally talk shit about Goopy!
