Liv Tyler in polka-dotted Stella McCartney: dated, fug or cute?

wenn3325456

I think I knew at one point that Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney have been friends for a long time. Stella’s high-profile friendships seem to get overshadowed in the ongoing Gwyenth-Madonna War, but here are some new photos of Liv being the biggest celebrity to show up for her friend Stella, at Stella’s new store opening in NYC. Liv wore Stella too – this polka-dotted mess of a dress. It looks so… dated. Is Stella just grabbing dresses from the 1990s (all of them worn by Julia Roberts??) and calling them her own designs?

With a friendship going back over a decade, Liv Tyler can always be counted on to be one of Stella McCartney’s biggest champions. So when the British designer opened her latest store in Tyler’s hometown of New York, the actress was a guaranteed attendee.

The Lord Of The Rings beauty showed off her stunning figure in a black polka dot dress from Stella’s Autumn/Winter 2011 collection as she arrived at the Manhattan boutique. The 33-year-old, who stands tall at 5ft 10in, teamed the sheer and structured peplum dress with a pair of towering heels. Polka dots are back in fashion this season with a host of designers incorporating the pattern into their designs.

But the designer was typically more casual in a white top and black trousers as she welcomed guests and fashion writers into her latest store.

On Monday night, Tyler was in another Stella design at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art Institute Gala. The actress wore a dramatic white feathered strapless number with an ombre yellow hemline at the event, which was held in tribute to late designer Alexander McQueen.

[From The Daily Mail]

Yes, CB was going to write about Liv’s Stella dress at the Met Gala, but she never got around to it (because there were SO MANY photos that day!). I’ve included some photos of it, below. I don’t really like it… on Liv. I think it might have worked better on a blonde, although I think PARTS of the dress are rather lovely. However, the yellow-butt thing is just weird.

UPDATE: Oh, so the Met Gala gown is Givenchy, not Stella. My bad. Bad Daily Mail!

    Dated. Also boring.

  2. arock says:

in the second picture she has that look like “omg, something has been nesting in my dress and its crawling up my leg…”
either that or “…my dad is WHO?!”

  3. k says:

The only cute item I ever saw from Stella was a pair of multi-colored shoes. She’s just riding on her father’s coattails.

  4. dread pirate cuervo says:

    Blah.

  5. mln76 says:

On the Met dress I think the right person could have pulled it off (maybe) Liv is beautiful but she always looks like a deer in headlights and her make-up is all wrong.

  6. Sassy says:

Um, yeah, totally dated considering I had the same style outfit in 1989 (just minus the polka dots. Yikes.

  7. Becky66 says:

Didn’t like the black polka dotted, looks like it’s from the 80’s. i did sorta like the yellow and white tweety bird gown.

On a side note WTH do women think a center part looks good, on 99% of women it’s horrid! Part that puppy on the side and I guarantee you’ll look better!

  8. eowyn says:

It isn’t a Stella McCartney’s dress at the MET but GIVENCHY Haute Couture from the same collection as Cate Blanchet’s gown at the Oscars this Years.

  9. flounder says:

Though I think the dress is dated..she could have accessorized to make it a bit more modern (ie dark nail polish..maybe a more structured hair style???)

I love her, so I hate to say anything negative!

  10. Solveig says:

Polka dots looks good only on Yayoi Kusama.

I clearly remember that clothing line, and this is one of its ugliest gowns. I like the fabric on the bottom of the dress, tho, minus the feathers.

Looks likes something one of the Pointer Sisters might have worn in the early 80s.

  12. Jo says:

Neither one of those dresses are doing it for me, and I don’t even think it’s just on her. Let’s focus on the more important matter, and that’s on how much more she looks like her father every day.

  13. Juu says:

That MET dress looks like a Givenchy wannabe…

  14. TeeTee says:

well they say Fashion is recycled, its not that bad–but they didn’t accessorize it correctly and her hair is drab.

How old is Stella??? she looks beaten down–guess she is working hard..love her handbags.

has she always had a wonky eye and plumped up cheeks?

aarrggghhh!! love Liv and Stella but they are all wrong, on this one.

ps. Liv needs on some sheer hose or something, her legs and toes look, just wrong.

  15. anait says:

I’m off topic, but is she really 5ft 10in? That is more or less 155cm if I’m not wrong. (Sorry I’m not familiar with feet and inches.) I thought she was taller, taller than me and I consider myself short.

Oh, Solveig, I love this collection.
I think it was one of the most strange, well made and beutiful. And the details were amazing.

    Anait: Liv is 178 cm!

  17. Frances says:

    @anait,

    5’10” is 177/178 cm.

  18. foozy says:

    5ft 10 isn’t 155cm!!! although i suck at this as well, i’m 5ft3 which makes me roughly around 164cm

  19. Sumodo1 says:

No back on the polka dot dress? That’s worse than scroll-down fug, because if you can’t see the back, you don’t get the full horror, like “yellow-ass dress.” Zoinks!

  20. ladybert62 says:

Tell me why again this Stella McCarney is a famous designer? I cant recall seeing anything of hers that I Liked!

  21. stephanie says:

holy god look at the yellow ass!

  22. Reality says:

I like the polka dot dress! I think it’s got a cool retro vibe, and her body looks so curvaceous.

And when I saw the MET gown, I immediately thought of Cate Blanchett’s Oscar dress- they are obviously from the same avant garde designer.

  23. Mouse says:

I love the polka dotted dress!

  24. kara says:

The Met Ball dress is Givenchy couture. The collection was met with mixed reviews, and I think it’s odd but gorgeous. So much more interesting than anything Stella could do.

  25. anait says:

    Frances and Foozy, thank you…
I find it out by myself, I didn’t remember that a inch is 2,54 cm and a foot is 30,48cm I’m getting older 🙂 and I begin making mistakes…
And I was sure she was taller than me as she is,… I’M SHORT! 🙂

  26. L says:

As other’s have said it’s Givenchy. Which worked well on Cate Blanchett and Florence Welch at the Grammys. Not so much here…..

  27. Solveig says:

@eowyn (16), I loved it too, but I didn’t like the way it was presented to the public (models wearing odd samurai hats) and I hate feathers.

  28. DreamyK says:

Dated, but she’s my girl crush so she always looks hot to me.

  29. OtherChris says:

Well, I sort of liked it until I read that Pointer’s Sisters comment by #11, which is spot on.

  30. Kiki says:

mccartney is a no talent. her stuff is crap.

  31. azurea says:

    BOTH ridiculously UGLY.

  32. Raised brow says:

Liv is a staunch advocate of minimal make-up on the red-carpet, which suits her fine, usually, as she’s a pretty girl. But considering she wore this costume-y get-up to the MET, she needed more drama about the face. I don’t care for the feathery mess she wore, but it’s appropriate for the event. Minimal make-up worked for the polka- dot tragedy, but couldn’t she at least have bothered to get a pedicure? Get it right one of these days, Liv. I’m in your corner, but you’re trying me…

  33. Kiska says:

Liv can do no wrong for me. She is stunning!

  34. jane16 says:

Never liked polka dots, but I like Liv. She’s naturally pretty and “real”.

  35. GeekChic says:

@Becky66: I’m one of those women who can’t wear anything but a center part. Anything else looks awful and ridiculous. My hair dresser tried to play with it last time I saw her (my hair is long and blonde and hair dressers have always loved playing with it, lol), and she had to just go back to the center part because everything else she tried looked horrible. So some women stick with the center part for a reason.

As for the dresses, well… The Stella dress is flattering and the cut looks nice on her, but it’s dated and not all that interesting. The one for the Met Ball is interesting, but I can’t get over the yellow on the butt. It looks like she, um, well had an accident of the urinary variety. I actually like Liv and I like the fact that she sometimes looks awkward. It somehow makes her more real.

  36. Mairead says:

What in the bet-down hell is that MacCartney one wearing? I like her bags sometimes – I spent a lot of time looking at them in the past as I really wanted a nice bag that wasn’t made of leather. But the ones we get in BTs aren’t nice enough to shell out over €300 on. Not when I can get loads of Fossil, Charlotte Reid and Claudia Canova bags that people will genuinely fawn over for the same money.

@ foozy. Oh no you don’t! I’m roughly 5′ 3″ to 3.5″ (that half inch is important) but I’m definitely 160cm.

  37. Becky66 says:

@GeekChic, I think if it’s your natural part it’s fine (and those are the girls it usually looks good on), but I’ve only seen a very few models/actresses it actually looks good on, it seems to elongate the face and most models/actresses have long enough faces. ;0) Your hair sounds lovely! When I went through hairdressing school I was always the guinea pig because everyone loved playing with my long hair.

  38. wunderkindt says:

    dated look

  39. Nikki says:

I don’t think this dress is too bad, it would be fine without the ruffle thing around the waist in front.

  40. Talita says:

Love the polka dot dress! But I’m scared of the yellow ass!

  41. galaxy.girl says:

    Beauty no matter what…. 🙂

  42. Crash2GO2 says:

A center part is fine for most women, actually. But if your face is long (like Goopie’s) it will elongate it even more. Side is better.

  43. Newbie says:

With better styling, it could have been really cute. For now I’m calling it fug. But I like the other dress she wore to the Met Gala. Weird, but I like.
