Duchess Kate’s first (stylish) trip to America: gorgeous or boring?

fp_7574266_barm_royals_17_27

We have twenty million new photos of Prince William and Duchess Kate since they left Canada and flew down to California, so let’s just knock this stuff out in chronological order, shall we? First up: Duchess Kate in this lovely cranberry suit by Catherine Walker, back when she was still in Canada (on Friday, I think). Kate accessorized with the Queen’s Maple Leaf pin, which Kate also wore for Canada day. I love this color on Kate, and I wish she would wear red more often. Also: does anyone else think that Kate might have a button problem? She doesn’t seem to understand that enormous buttons are no longer en vogue.

Next up: this pale lavender/grey/blue by Roksanda Illinic. Kate wore this for her arrival in California, and for her first stop, at a tech conference in Beverly Hills. She and William even appeared on stage, and they were greeted like rock stars by all of the California tech nerds/billionaires. William even made a joke about Kate spending too much money shopping online. I think this is one of my favorites out of Kate’s fashion tour, honestly. I love the simplicity of it, I love the silhouette.

Yesterday, Kate and William headed to Santa Barbara so that William could play polo – it was a fundraising event for his charity. Kate wore a silk dress by Jenny Packham which I’m kind of meh on. Oh, and when someone asked her what she was wearing, she snotted, “I’m sure you know by now.” Well, well, well. Anyway, William’s team won, and Kate got to hand him the trophy and they kissed each other on the cheeks and it was all very racy.

Last look, which is Kate’s dress for last night’s BAFTA event in LA, with a lot of stars in attendance (I’ll get to those fashions later). Kate wore Sarah Burton for McQueen, this pale lilac gown with a full skirt. Too many pale colors all in a row? Perhaps? I’m starting to wonder if these shades of grey-blue-lavender aren’t as much of a style crutch as Kate’s beloved navy/sapphire blues. I like the gown, though. It just would have been more special if it hadn’t followed several pale ensembles. Also: look how tiny her waist is!

    Beautiful!!!

  2. Monie says:

I thought I read here that royals don’t wear open toed shoes. She gets to CA and says “F*** that!”. LOL. She is wasting away but if she likes rattling when she walks and William likes the feeling of her jagged pelvic bones then more power to her.

  3. Luise says:

She looks fab in the red suit. I’m with you about all the pale colors and the navy. Too much and getting kind of old and boringly meh. She’s so OCD with the hair touching. She does look nice with it pulled back.

  4. UKHels says:

bit of both really – she looks very well groomed and always classy but not exactly exiciting

a bit like her personality (I know, off with my head and all that)

  5. Mika says:

I love her, I think she’s beautiful, I think she’s caught a lovely chap and I’m mad jealous of her legs… BUT… her hands are looking a little craggy. Five pounds Kate, just five… maybe 10, certainly seven, more pounds and I’ll stop bothering you forever.

Although, I guess she’ll put on a few when she gets knocked up, right?

  6. SoCalGal in FL says:

I just LOVE big buttons! However, I also think she should add a tiny speck of color to her hair. Close to mousey. Oh wait…looks like she did color it after the day she wore the red dress! Never mind…

  7. brin says:

They are a really attractive couple and I love her “look”, simple and elegant.

  8. Rita says:

Sunday morning with a cup of hot Columbian, a stack of freshly clipped coupons (30% off Kraft Real Mayo, et al), Phil Collins singing “One More Night”, and quiet time with my favorite Bitches is a nice start to the day. Morning all!

My only criticism of Kate is the lavender outfit doesn’t tie very well. Other than that, she is in perfect fashion for my taste. She has an incredibly “girlish” figure and carries herself so well. I saw a picture of a little bald girl, cancer victim, bolt the ranks of royal protocol to hug Kate the other day and it was a touching scene. This world wide honeymoon will be over soon enough but I think the couple is doing just wonderfully.

By the way, I didn’t mean to imply that I was involved with a hot Columbian while a voyeuristic Phil Collins sang to us. Neither was actually in the room this morning.

  9. Nanea says:

Quote: … does anyone else think that Kate might have a button problem? She doesn’t seem to understand that enormous buttons are no longer en vogue. …

Maybe she has an agreement with a manufacturer of large buttons to make them en vogue again?

Of everything posted in this thread, I like the Sarah Burton gown best.

  10. Chicken'sMom says:

Love love love that gown. I want to see a little more bling though. Hey…if they re affectionate in public, maybe then we’ll eventually see the real jewels out.

  11. womanfromthenorth says:

I wish he would take her arm a bit more… other than that I see nothing wrong.

  12. jen says:

Did you see her toes? And no pantyhose! Maybe those are only rules when she’s on British ground.

  13. Beth says:

I love her fashion sense. I feel it’s a welcome change from all of the tacky looks we get from other celebrities, and shows that you don’t need to show a lot of skin to look beautiful and classy… did anyone see J Lo at the BAFTAs?

  14. brin says:

Mornin, Rita! Now that would be a good way to start the day! lol

  15. Jb says:

She has a very long torso.

  16. John Wayne Lives says:

Why was my comment monitored? I’m never excessively mean EVER! But like I said, her “you should know” comment, to me is the long conceled diva b!tch coming out. Your JOB Waity is to look pretty, talk about urself and have a kid. Get on with it Diva.
Aaaand, btw, I think she looks amazing. I always do, even in those cute little “facinators”. I’m kinda jealous over that bit of whimsical fancy the Brits get to wear.
But, I was waiting for that side of her to show. She’s got the prize and noone can take it from her. She has to, and will do what she is told, but a demure geisha she is not. That girl is a powerhouse. Look at her eyes.

  17. Mia says:

I liked the green dress she wore on Friday best. The pale dresses are pale. She should have gone with a jewel tone for the BAFTA event. That dress in red, yellow, or even blue would have been fab IMO.

  18. Anne says:

The grey dress and cranberry suit is nice but the rest is dull in the extreme. I didn’t expect her to go the route of Jlo but that McQueen dress is totally boring for such an event.

I think she wears exactly what she wants to. Her taste in clothing has never been other than middle class girl wanting to join the upper classes.

I’m being moderated too. Why? Did I upset the lovers of Prince Harry?

  19. Newyorking says:

I agree with you about the buttons – her yellow dress had similar buttons. While it worked on the yellow dress, here not so much. Too many neutrals, but hey if she likes them… and her bony self looks good in anything she wears except for this Jenny Packham dress — she looks too skinny.

  20. Justalark says:

    @Beth: Yes, I totally agree!

Katherine’s look is a breath of fresh air…Tasteful, understated, elegant, and classy!

She proves that women don’t have to sport a fake tan, surgically alter their features, get breast (or butt) implants and dress in skin-tight, biscuit-baring mini dresses to be sexy…

  21. Your mama says:

Love the dress when she landed in LA! So forward & modern yet simple. She does look great in red (almost as in the navy). Also agree with you Beth 🙂

But….. Anyone else a little uneasy about her ring. I can’t help but think of it as Diana’s ring forever. Understand why she was given it from Will, but just still think it’s just Di’s ring. I don’t know… Maybe it’s just me.

  22. Miss Marie says:

I saw the pictures from last night’s event at the dailymail. After seeing those photos – Kate vs. Hollywood elite – I can confidentally say the Duchess has class and has dressed that way on her entire tour. You know the saying about class? Either you have it or you don’t. The stars out last night look gaudy in many cases especially JLo. Europeans always dress better than Americans, whether they are rich or poor.

  23. Jane says:

She looks fine. There is nothing wrong with the way she dresses, she doesn’t have to go around all tripped out like a movie star. If she did I am sure it wouldn’t sit well with the commoners since it is probably their money that pays for that stuff. As for the big buttons, now that she is wearing them, they will come back in style.

I do wish she would gain a few pounds, the woman has no curves, but great legs.

  24. mary simon says:

I love Kate – She is doing great!

  25. Chrissy says:

Oh, I soooo agree about the big buttons!!! That red outfit would be my fav from this trip if not for those buttons! As for her comment, wow …. Totally snotty!! Wonder if we will start hearing more like that. Or maybe she was just tired?? I can’t imagine meeting all these people and attending all these events … always having to look your best, smiling, making small talk. I’d hate it.

  26. You don't say says:

I agree that after seeing what the Hollywood set wore (I would not say A list), she shows class and restraint. I prefer when she does bolder color–the red was beautiful. I wish the BAFTA gown had been a jewel color as well. It was not that interesting, but suits her. She dresses like she wants to and that is fine. Not a problem for me.

I like this couple as they seem happy and easy going and comfortable in their skin. Rather refreshing actually.

  27. kibbles says:

I like her style because I approve of dressing conservatively for most women other than Hollywood stars. The less T&A the better in my book. I agree that her style matches her personality and expectations as a member of the royal family, which is classy and elegant but a bit on the boring side.

I’m expecting comments about her weight in every article, thread, post on Kate until she gets back to her former healthy weight. It’s unfortunate she feels the need to become this thin. I thought she looked great several years ago.

I am assuming that she is going to remain weight conscious now that she is one of the most photographed women in the world. In addition, she can now fit into any designer outfit without having to worry about comments or criticism of her curves. I can just imagine the firestorm these male journalists would have if William or Harry’s wife had the body of Christina Hendricks.

  28. Miss Marie says:

I heard a report yesterday based on a study. As this nation gets larger, they are finding our perception of a good weight is changing. I think those viewing Kate as thin should think how our standard of fitness has changed in this country. As people get larger, a current-day size fourteen lady will look thin compared to contemporaries that are growing. Just consider that before putting your negative comments out there about Kate’s size and take a look in your mirror too. We are a nation of fatties with muffin tops and beer bellies – adults and children. We could all back away from the table. The reason our health care costs are going up, is because obesity is taxing for the body and ones health. Btw, I have a little pot belly so I understand weight control is hard.

  29. NancyMan says:

She looks great but bordering on a little boring. He desperately needs some new suits! No more navy blue with a burgundy tie. He could learn a thing or two from his Dad who’s always well dressed.

  30. linda lou says:

Wow, Miss Marie, hate America much? Your comment really shows your poor judgement and short sightedness about Americans and their fashion sense. Don’t make over generalizations about a whole nation. It gets tiring and old after awhile and shows a lack of understanding about people in general. Looking at the news and viewing movies that have Americans in them or watching an awards show with Americans, does not mean we all look like this nor do we all have similar tastes. Hollywood in general does a terrible disservice to America, sort of a self-hating love affair taking place in Hollywood, so it is not the best place to make conclusions about American fashion. Don’t forget, styles are based on one’s own personal taste, background, experiences. It’s OK if you think Europeans are superior to Americans but just remember, it shows your own ignorance about the cultures that you so conveniently lump together and pit against another culture, which by the way, is made up largely of people with European ancestry. There are well dressed and poorly dressed folks all over the globe.

It is nice that she and the prince took time out to visit the US.

  31. katnip says:

    @Miss Marie:
ITA about the weight thing. America is FAT. And when we see someone lean or skinny we call anorexic. Which is not always the case. Walk down any street or go to a Mall or any where. We have FAT adults and the most tragic.. FAT children.

regarding the buttons. It is obviously a fashion thing. I mean she is not sitting a room sewing them on her cloths. They come that way.

I like her simple style. But her clothing choice is a bit nondescript. I don’t think anything she has worn will be that memorable as time goes on.

But I will say I LOVE the open toe shoes. I want those.

  32. Miss Marie says:

@Linda Lou – you are in denial. Read the papers last week reporting Americans are fatter than ever except in Colorado. Ignorance is not bliss and I am an overweight American too. I have a feeling you are also and being a little too sensitive.
One more thing, I am a proud American, yet a realist. Don’t drink the Kool-aid anymore.

  33. kibbles says:

Developed countries in general (and not just America) are dealing with an obesity crisis. This is in part due to large portion sizes, fast food and processed food, and lack of exercise. However, I wouldn’t place all blame on the individual. As more people lose their jobs and have to end up working for McDonald’s or live on welfare, you will see more families buy dinner from the dollar menu rather than shop at Whole Foods. Healthy food (and health care) needs to be cheaper and more accessible to the poor and middle class.

Kate is really thin. I don’t think our perception about weight is so warped that we can’t see the difference between what she looked like for the last decade and what she looks like today. She’s probably a size 0 or 2.

Being fat is unhealthy but so is being too skinny or malnourished. Our society has a problem with obesity but it also has a problem with eating disorders and an unhealthy obsession with having the perfect body.

  34. Karin (from Brazil) says:

She´s gorgeous, so is he, but please Kate gain some pounds!

  35. Jane says:

There is a difference between being the proper weight for a person’s height and bone structure and being too thin regardless of those things. Kate definitely is skinny, not just her proper weight, but below it. The camera puts on ten pounds, so she probably looks even skinner in person. I don’t see what it would hurt for her put on 5-10 pounds. We may be a nation of overweight people, but we also have the opposite problem of young girls and women starving themselves down to nothing because they want to be like celebrities with stick figures.

I was watching an old movie made in the fifties that had Rhonda Fleming in it and she looked wonderful. She was curvy but didn’t look overweight at all. It was mentioned in the movie that her dress size was a 14! Could you imagine any star now admitting to wearing a 14 even in private, much less having it part of a script in a movie. I know sizes have changed and a 14 then is not the same size as a 14 now, but even so a 14 was not considered little even back in the fifties. A fan wanting the same figure as Rhonda Fleming would have been at a healthy weight and still had a good figure.

  36. lrm says:

um,i am very thin/slender [size 6 since forever and mid 40’s now] and I think kate is bordering on too thin….
so it is not a skewed sense of what is thin based on ‘america being full of fatties’…whatever tha tmeans.
I live in so cal, and also my family is from the NE and were all thin as well….anyway, there IS also a problem with too thin images [mainly via hollywood] in the USA.
It’s simultaneous to the weight issues.
anyway,i live with a son and hubbie who are uber thin by design, and sometimes they need to gain weight….even still, Kate is thin-=a bit too much.

btw, i have veiny hands and always have-i dont know if it’s weight reltaed, but ppl are commenting as such….i did not know that-even when i gained ALOT of preggo weight [65 lbs actually],i still had the veins. hate them, but what can you do? just like my freckles.

anyway, i LOVE Kate. more and more as each day passes. Will seems totally smitten with her-how refreshing to see a high profile couple who actually love each other and are in love. that makes me love her more-the way he looks at her.
And I love that she is slightly power hungry and not demure. Her style is appropriate for her position. And while I love the style of the CA dresses, the pale color, IMHO, does nothing for her….too fair for her coloring.

love the McQueen dress-wish the color was at least slightly darker.
She looks great in red, as well as that b righter purple dress, and the bright green one that she wore on the NA tour. She should wear the colors that pop more often.

  37. MarySue says:

I also think she needs to put on a few pounds; however, I like her style. I especially like the red dress.

  38. bluhare says:

@kibbles: Totally agree re portion control. I have participated in health fairs and had an exhibit showing a serving of a food and what size it would be, using every day objects. Ready?

    Meat — deck of cards
    Pasta — computer mouse
    Pancake — CD
    Butter — Two dice
    Peanut Butter — Golf ball
    Vegetables — light bulb

People were shocked. Especially at the pasta!

  39. linda lou says:

Um, Miss Marie….what? “@Linda Lou – you are in denial. Read the papers last week reporting Americans are fatter than ever except in Colorado.” Oh by the way, there you go again generalizing a nation of people and sounds like your are actually drinking the kool aid.

If you read my post you would know that I was not making a comment about the weight of Americans. Check out my post again. Sounds like you really are on a tear to get out some misdirected anger. It’s Sunday, chillax!

  40. TG says:

I agree with the Kaiser on this one. Love love her in red and love the dress she wore last night but wish she wouldn’t wear too many pale shades in a row. But, I have to laugh about the large buttons, first becasue I didn’t notice them until you pointed them out and they do seem kind of large and 80’s like but then again doesn’t Kate set her own fashion? Wish she would put on 5 lbs though. And is the Prince actually in khaki pants? Horrible.

  41. Lacey says:

I am living for that Roksanda Illinic dress! I LOVE it. So simple and classy– well done, Duchess Kate! If it weren’t already sold out, I would buy it immediately!

  42. CG says:

I like the Sarah Burton gown, the lilac Roksanda and the yellow Jenny Packham, but everything else she’s worn on this trip … meh. And if she actually said that to the person asking about her dress, what a bitch! True colors finally coming out.

  43. Snappyfish says:

I think she looks amazing. I love this couple. I also want to thank Kaiser for a post not smothered in snark for a change.

  44. munchies says:

i like how she recycles her nude pumps. btw wills has huge bulge in white jeans

  45. Doken says:

As to her comment “I’m sure you know by now”. How can anyone fault her for that, realistically? We all looked at her outfits on this website (obviously) and then comment on whether it’s a hit or a miss.

Other websites are exclusively dedicated to nothing more then updates on her brand of stocking and whether she wears too much navy. Armies of people start hunting out the origins of her clothing the second she steps out in them.

So now she is snotty because she doesn’t pretend to be ignorant of the situation? I also wonder if her response was meant to be a joke. Was it just noted or actually videotaped?

  46. Evelyn says:

I adore her and I think the is almost always beautifully dressed, but I wish she would darken her hair some. I think it would be a better compliment to a the pale colors she wears. Also that red suit was fantastic

  47. kira says:

I really like her sense of style, particularly that red coat/dress.

But I think she does look a bit on the thin side. If you look at her past pictures, you can see that she was always thin, but lately, she’s even thinner. I’m guessing that being a princess is very stressful. Hopefully, she can rest up after all the hoopla dies down.

  48. Hannah says:

I live in LA and the local stations were covering Will and Kate’s every move. A reporter present when Kate made her clothes comment thought the exchange was funny. So perhaps out of context it sounds snarky but in reality the statement was delivered as a joke.

  49. anon_in_pnw says:

The poor thing is tiny! Hope she puts a bit of weight back on when home. She is a role model to young women everywhere.

Thank you CB for not posting the upskirt shots in her yellow dress that other sites put up. Poor thing should have had a better minder to keep her biscuits under wraps!

  50. Hellen says:

She looks very appropriate in every outfit – they are all quite conservative, perhaps even boring, but she hasn’t put a foot wrong. The dress she wore to the polo match and the BAFTA dress were both very pretty and flattering, so yay. And she was adorable as a cowgirl.

  51. Marytere says:

Kaiser, honey… America is a continet not a country!!
Ah, and I love Kate, she is gorgeous, but need to eat more.

  52. Lisa Turtle says:

I like the red suit, but everything else is just “Meh” – there was a lime green Diane von Furstenburg dress as well, and that was just not a flattering cut or color for Kate’s figure.

All in all, I’ve been rather bored by Kate’s style. I know, I know she’s gotta follow royal protocol. Sleeves & long hem-lines don’t bother me at all, I actually prefer a more covered up look. Maybe I’m just bored by her? I feel like there is nothing there. There is a fine looking woman standing around, but she’s not shown much personality (both in style and otherwise)… Any girl who married William and became the future Queen of England would have gotten this amount of attention. I’m not “fascinated” or “intrigued” like the British media (cough-Daily Mail – cough) want Americans to be. I actually think William was more interesting, he was poised, he spoke of his mother. Kate’s just… there. Sure she wears designer clothes, but does she really wear them so well, with flair and personal style? I say no.

And I still hate her eyeliner.

  53. Playlist says:

Hair touching is a sign of nervousness, wanting to look correct for everyone. Most people don’t even know they are doing it, so next time you are at an event where you may be judged on your appearance, or know you are being photographed, make note to see if you keep touching your hair. You’d be surprised.

William and Kate have done such a great PR job bringing fresh, new vibrancy to the royal family. Diana would be so proud of both Will and his wife. It can’t be easy going from one event to another non-stop as they have on this trip, especially when you weren’t born into it. Kate has fallen into the role graciously. It has to be daunting to choose every outfit knowing that women all over the world are going to endlessly critique every aspect of it. Kate’s comment was just a joking reference to the obsessed fascination that everyone knows what she will be wearing before she even shows up in it.

  54. Smokey says:

As to her comment “I’m sure you know by now” – it’s ill-mannered to ask people who designed their clothes. It only appears acceptable on Hollywood red carpets but it’s actually a very proletarian question for royalty or the rich.

I think she’s doing great and can’t imagine how I’d deal with the pressure of the scrutiny she’s under with every outfit.

  55. moja31 says:

can people please stop calling her body athletic? athletic bodies have muscle tone, she definitely does not; she’s in desperate need of a sandwich. she looked much better in pictures 2-3 years ago, there’s no doubt she’s lost lots of weight and isn’t naturally this size. it’s a shame, because she looked much prettier with another 15lbs on her.

as for the clothes, i like everything except for the print dress with the matronly sandals. she continues to be boring but pretty, which would be fine if folks didn’t ooh and ah at her every outfit and try to sell her as a style icon. she’s a girl who married well, and now gets to spend her life shaking hands, smiling & wearing expensive clothes, she’s not a god.

  56. Jaxx says:

I think she is a beautiful girl. Her clothing is not always to my taste but she looks beautiful and appropriate everywhere she goes. That last long, flowing lilac dress is gorgeous. Very Princessy and elegant. I would have loved it more in another color.

She could stand to gain a little weight but her clothes look great on her so I can see why she stays tiny. Her waist is so incredibly small. What, 21 inches maybe?

She and William obviously love each other. I don’t understand why she is criticized for waiting for a man she so clearly thinks hung the moon. They were too young to get married when they first met so…the waiting. It sure isn’t a crime. Though being king is part of who he is I don’t believe she married him because of that alone. She truly loves this man. You can see it clearly in every photo. There is a warmth in her eyes for William alone. He clearly feels the same. I see a long happy marriage for these two.

  57. JulieM says:

Katie-a well dressed empty shell. Just like Lisa Turtle said.

Bluhare: your portion control examples are right on. I’ve lost weight over the past two years following your advise (plus exercise). That’s how you do it. There are 1600 calories in a pound of pasta and I was just stuffing it in! No wonder I gained weight.

Marytere honey, North and South America are continents. Perhaps Kaiser should have put United States of …… but I think we all know what country Kaiser was referring to.

  58. Camille says:

Beautiful. But I hope she doesn’t lose any more weight.

  59. Justaposter says:

I think the hair touching is her being nervous.. heck who wouldn’t be? LOL

I like her taste in fashion, but mostly I like seeing them look happy.

  60. Kloops says:

Maybe she only has to wear hose and closed toe shoes if it’s an official royal function? Maybe the Bafta and princes charity thing aren’t considered traditional royal duties? Don’t know, just spitballing. The hose/shoe thing is so interesting to still be around in 2011. Wonder if theyll relax protocol when the Queen passes?

  61. Rita says:

    @JulieM

Good call on the continents. Don’t forget Central America which I believe is referred to as the sub-continent. If you visit any of these places you are then said to be incontinent…Donde esta el bano?

  62. Poppy says:

I think she looks just fine, much better in the strong jewel colours though. She will start wearing them more often than not on public appearances, for exactly the same reason the Queen wears bright coloured outfits, the public wants to be able to pick them out easily in a large crowd and they stand out better in photographs.

I’m deliriously happy that young girls and women at last have a fashion role model that doesn’t inspire them to leave the house looking like a $2 hooker.

She is too thin and if she is trying for that heir she needs to add a few pounds, her lovely legs are starting to get very thin and sinewy.

As for her statement “you should know by now”, it was a very deft way of not personally endorsing a designer or product, probably a requirement of her position. She knew the designers name would be on the net in 60seconds. She would have had an extensive briefing for the tour from the palace honchos (just like going into battle). This woman has learned her lessons well; I’m actually beginning to like her.

  63. liv says:

@justalark, kate (as well as her sister) loves to fake bake. and she has been rumored to have gotten an eye and nose job

  64. Poppy says:

    BTW….forgot to say.

‘BUTTONS’ are back, expect to see enormous buttons on the new seasons winter wear, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet folks. More 60’s inspired than ’80’s.

  65. Tomas says:

To anyone who says her clothing is dull or boring… are you kidding?? The woman is gonna be the freaking Queen of England one day, what do you want her to wear thigh high boots and leopard print spandex?! She dresses in timeless, elegant designs because of who she is now, and when you look at these pictures in 30 years time she’s still gonna look fabulous and not like some trend following 20 year old!

  66. phaksi says:

Her shoulders in the Jenny Packham! She lost a lot of weight for them to look like that. The BAFTA dress was meh, but she looked better than the B and C grade people there. If this had been an Oscars red carpet Waity would have been one of the worst dressed

  67. Lucky Charm says:

Is she not allowed to wear colored nail polish either? Those peep-toe shoes are cute, but polish on her toes, and fingers, would really finish the outfit.

  68. Vesper says:

I’m so tired of hearing ppl. talk about thinness like it is an unhealthy obsession. Yes, Kate is thin and could probably stand to gain a few pounds, but she is far from unhealthy or anorexic. Even athletes can look too thin, but it doesn’t mean they are unhealthy.

I am also thin (although not as thin as Kate) and I am constantly told by my obese relatives that I should gain weight and that extra weight is good if one gets sick. This is coming from people who fry everything, eat pork and white bread on an almost daily basis, and drink soda, Crystal Light and alcohol exclusively. Most of them have diet related health issues like diebeties. I finally decided to ask my doctor, which is more healthy — being thin even a bit underweight (but not anorexic) and being a bit overweight? He choose the former. I am not promoting anorexia, but in general our culture seems much more familar / comfortable with obesity. Look back 40-50 years and in general ppl. were less heavy, especially children.

As for the camera adding 10 extra pounds, I have read that it mostly applies to video not still pics. I think it is an individual thing and can depend on a number of factors including lighting, colour of outfit, and colour of background. Some ppl. photograph heavier than they are, some ppl. photograph older than they are, and some people photograph as prettier or less pretty than they are. Perhaps Kate is someone who looks thinner in pics.

As for Kate’s outfits, while I am a big fan of elegance I think she could have done a better job chosing many of her outfits. U can still be elegant, but have a wow factor like her cranberry suit by Catherine Walker and her pale lavender/grey/blue dress by Roksanda Illinicred outfit. I find most of her outfits to be either nondescript or the wrong colour for her. I also wish she would lose the black eyeliner.

  69. Stephanie says:

Pretty girl! Nice clothes. I would really love to see her with a pretty updo.

Kind of a snotty comment tho!

  70. macey says:

Im sure she was joking when she made that comment. I just watched a news video and the 1st thing they announced after their intro was the designer of the dress. I wouldnt blame her at all if she was just tired of talking about her clothes all the time. I know I would not be able to remember every designer if i was changing that many times in such a short period.

I hope CB runs the pics from when they were at the skid row Arts Center, they both looked so cute when they were drawing with the kids. You can tell these two are truly comfortable with each other and really enjoy each others company. Im kind of sad they’re
leaving already. I thought they would be here a bit longer.

  71. MaggieNZ says:

Just a note on protocol: She’s not allowed to say the name of the designer – it would be explicitly endorsing a brand, something the royal family are not allowed to do. It isn’t diva bitch or snotty, she just had to find a way to answer a question from a US interviewer who didn’t know she couldn’t say. A British interviewer would never even ask.

  72. Louisa says:

STOP TOUCHING YOUR HAIR YOU FILTHY ARRIVISTE!

  73. april says:

I didn’t think the red outfit did anything for her. I think the short lavender dress and the long lavender dress really made her face and hair pop!

  74. Darlene says:

    GORGEOUS. LOVE HER!!!!

  75. taxi says:

@moja31 She does have an athletic build, with clearly defined muscles in arms & legs & narrow hips, as in “boyish”. Athletic doesn’t mean bulked-up.

The polo day dress is boring & would look good on her grandmother. Stodgy shoestoo even if her does do show. Kate actually looks better in brighter or darker colors. Very pale neutrals are not so flattering for her.

  76. Deven says:

Kate is wonderful…elegant and beautiful. JLo looked like she pulled her dress away from a big dog who was tearing it up. Those holes were in horribly unattractive places. She’s the only one who doesn’t know she should no longer dress that way. Give it up, J.

  77. Ron says:

This girl has impeccable taste, whoever she is working with, is doing an amazing job. She looks beautiful, appropriate, and modern.

  78. ElleGin says:

I love this couple, but somehow people seem to be focused on her weight. She looks fine.
Before the wedding she was on diet to look pretty in her wedding gown, and she did look pretty.

After her wedding she has been running around for all sorts of events. She may look thin, but she looks happy and radiant, which says a lot. Compare her to the other recently wedded crown princess, and I’ll say Kate is definitely healthier looking.

I doubt the palace would allow her to starve herself anyway. They want an heir.

  79. NicoleAM says:

I think she looks great in the McQueen dress.

  80. eternalcanadian says:

Did anyone catch those pictures of Catherine’s naked arse at the airport in Calgary (she was wearing the yellow dress) She doesn’t wear underpants!!!! 😮

Catherine is definitely too skinny. I know I’ve said this over and over, but there was a video that clinched it for me. She was up in the NWT at the Canadian Ranger outlet and they were standing in line at the food buffet. You could see the back of her shoulder blades/bones. I mean they stuck out like huge bony lumps, like bony scary. Not healthy at all.

I didn’t like the red dress she wore on her last day in Calgary. It was too heavy for that hot day. What she wore upon arriving in Los Angeles was better and I kind of liked the dress she wore to the polo game. But that ugly green DVF dress from Friday night? No, no, no.

The long dress she wore to BAFTA I thought she could have added a little glitter, some sparkly gems in the dress. The belt was just weird. Perhaps should have been the same colour as the dress. Her shoes were awesome as were the earrings. But her hair, a mess as usual, she looks lovely with it up like at the Canada Day fireworks show.

And that hair touching. My gosh it was really annoying me. I know she likes to wear her hair down, but it was just so windy a lot of times (especially in Calgary), and she was always flipping it or smoothing it. I thought she had a hairdresser along to make her hair nice? She just wore the same style day after day. I think her best look was the evening of Canada Day when she wore that fabulous purple Issa dress and had her hair up in that spiffy chignon. She also looked good with her hair in a ponytail doing the drago boat racing. The weather made it poofy and pretty. But having her hair down and blowing around just makes her hands in it all day long. Just annoying, like a tic or something.

And her last day in LA, the navy and white dress wasn’t too bad.

Again Catherine does not wear underpants! I was gobsmacked by that. 😛 But I know if she had just given in and brought along a lady dresser or valet, this person would have made sure Catherine wore a slip or underwear for such a flimsy dress on such a windy day!

And William. Did he bring just one suit and one shirt? As that’s all he seemed to wear, the same navy blue suit. He had more casual clothing changes than Catherine, although he did wear the same shirt two days in a row in Calgary for his cowboy outfit. 😛

  81. shirls says:

    she needs haispray !!!

  82. Micki says:

Whatever else I may write about her I think she dresses well, according to her body type with understated elegance and simplicity-all true to the Royal protocol.

  83. really says:

    LOVELY!

  84. moderncanadian says:

where’s the green dress from LA?
it was the best, for sure.

  85. Patricia says:

    GREAT JOB KATE!!!

  86. Esmeralda says:

I really don’t care about the clothes she wears. She won me over when she met the little girl with cancer. That was truly kind of her to take the time. Therefore, she could be the fugliest person in the fugliest clothes and I wouldn’t care because she has a good heart.

  87. Kim says:

eternal Canadien – thanks goodnes someone else noticed the hair touching! It drives me crazy, is an annoying habit and makes her look very vain. I get that it was windy but then wear a ponytail.

Having her hair curled and done at even casual events is annoying. I get that her hair is her prettiest feature but its should be an asset and not a disraction like it has become. Get some headbands and rubber bands- change it up Kate. And she needs to gain weight – she is to thin.

  88. jayem says:

I think everything she wears is boring. It’s all nice clothing, just too old for her. I know she’s “royalty” so she has to be demure, but all these outfits age her. She could dress so much cuter and much more modern and she doesn’t. She need a stylist and preferably one who embraces color. As a brunette, some color would look good on her. No one’s saying she has to dress in leopard print or have her bra showing, but she’s young and frequently photographed. She should relax and have some fun. And for the love of all things holy, let a professional do her makeup!!
