Julia Roberts & Lily Collins appear in new ‘Snow White’ stills: busted & budget?

snow1

These are some new production stills from the new Snow White movie. No, not the one with Kristen Stewart as Snow White – that film is called Snow White and the Huntsman, and in that one, Snow is a warrior-princess or something. No, this other version of Snow White just seems like a live-action version of the cartoon. And by that, I mean that it looks really, really budget. Lily Collins plays Snow in this one, with Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and Armie Hammer as the prince/love interest. Since this is so photo-heavy, let me just do some random thoughts with the relevant photos:

I hope Lily Collins is a talented actress, considering so much of the film is going to rest on her performance. I have the feeling that she has the potential to be a very attractive young woman, but it feels like she’s too young right now. Too young for this part, too young to carry a movie. Also, her brows are killing me. That’s some Sam Waterson brow happening there.

snow7

As for Julia Roberts – her costumes SUCK. Why does everything look so cheap?!? I can’t even look beyond the funky costumes. It’s like they’re trying to do Tim Burton on a budget.

snow3

The sets look budget too. And yes, that’s Nathan Lane back there. He’s the Evil Queen’s henchman or something. I bet he and Julia either had a great time together, or they absolutely hated each other.

snow2

Lily Collins says: “Julia’s playing evil in a way that I don’t think people are going to expect. Everyone loves that Julia smile and laugh and she maintains that, but in such this creepy eerie way that you don’t know if you love her or hate her. She’s brilliant and it’s been an honour. She’s so nice, she’s so classy, she’s just everything I had hoped she’d be. Julia gets to be quite horrible to me. There’s a scene where she pulls my hair and she pulled it so hard that some of it came out! But we kept rolling and afterward she was like, ‘I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!’” Yes, I’m sure it was an “accident”.

snow4

OMG!!!!!!!! Her swan headpiece is just disturbing. JESUS CHRIST.

snow5

Armie Hammer already looks like a cartoon prince, so this one is obvious.

snow8

Why are the dwarves throwing gang signs?

Isn’t the Evil Queen (very appropriate role — in terms of concept — for Roberts, by the way) supposed to be pretty herself?

And they should change the movie’s title to Snow Unibrow, based on that second picture.

P.S.: I just pictured Natalie Portman placed on Collins’s head (instead of that swan). Sorry, couldn’t help it.

  2. RocketMerry says:

“Armie Hammer already looks like a cartoon prince”

Right?!! When I first laid my eyes on him, I thought: “Good Lord, Charming…is that you? Why are you studying at Harvard and why are you double?”
Incidentally, I loved that Social Network movie (minus JT and some too-obvious lines).

  3. LisaMarie says:

Those costumes look like someone ran to goodwill and just bought all the crappy bedspreads they could find. Yikes. And that swan headpiece is pure fug.

  4. LOVE ANGELINA says:

OMG dreakitude!!!!! Hideous from top to bottom. I get an actual stomachache when I see bad fashion. OMG WTF. Its beyond budget…its like the new millennium never even happened and this is like a movie from the 90s that thinks its being cool and cutting edge. Sadness. Oh well.

  5. shay kay says:

Just the fact that Julia Roberts is in this movie makes me less like to see it.Somewhere along the way she went from America’s sweetheart to “don’t go away mad Julia just go away.”

  6. MarenGermany says:

i dont care for Julia Roberts but her lips are killing me.
    they look worse than Lilos.
they are like alien tubes strangly pressed together trying to emulate real lips.

  7. ladybert62 says:

There is a sentence I thought I would never read and I certainly dont believe: “Julia Roberts is so classy.”

All those pictures look silly – and the one with the swan on her head is beyond belief.

  8. jamie says:

This reminds me of those all those 1980s live action fairytales. Anyone remember that one with a gigantic frog prince? God were those creepy. Anyhow, I don’t think Lily Collins is too young for Snow White, but that is some SERIOUS unibrow. I can’t believe that much unibrow made it into a big hollywood movie. I’m liking the Prince Charming however, more pics of him, less of Julia Roberts please.

  9. Kiki says:

Julia as an evil bitch? She won’t be doing so much acting, after all.

  10. Kristen says:

I’m pretty sure a couple of those dwarves throwing the gang signs are also on Pit Boss.

  11. sara says:

I wish you would stop shooting off about things you know absolutely nothing about Kaiser, you have truly awful taste. The costumes are done by Eiko Ishioka, one of the best in the world. Please watch “The Fall” and witness some true beauty before you go off one of your stupid uninformed rants.

  12. deva says:

The lighting is what’s killing me.

  13. lisa says:

It looks very cartooney to me. I don’t like the vivid colors and the over the top bling.

But maybe that was the point. To make it very child friendly. I won’t see it in theater. I’m kind of tired of the ADULT remakes of these stories. And Julia does not fit the role at all to me. The Evil Queen was evil, dark and sexy in my eyes. Julia misses on a few points.

  14. normades says:

Um, if Lilly Collins is supposed to be “the fairest of the land”, that’s gotta be one fug kingdom.

  15. MJ says:

Jamie – YES! The Rapunzel one gave me nightmares for years.

  16. Elizabeth says:

Yes, her eye brows are a constant distraction from whatever else is going on. And her swan head piece makes her look like an upside down version of Bjork in that swan dress. But I love that Julia Roberts could knock people over with the padded hip appendages on her costumes. Oops, she says as another flunky goes flying!

  17. laura says:

Is this a hallmarkabcfamilylifetime channel made for tv movie…or a hollywood studio backed production? can’t tell the difference.

  18. Jaded says:

@ Sara – whoa girl….who pissed in your cornflakes this morning? There’s a polite way to voice a dissenting opinion. The costumes look cartoonish which may serve the movie well, but that swan headpiece is wayyyy too Bjork.

  19. sassenach says:

@ Sara. It doesn’t matter WHO created the costumes, they are ugly as hell. You don’t have to be “informed” to see that in the picture where Roberts is sitting down, it looks like they used a bedspread from the discount bin at TJMaxx. “The Fall” won’t make a difference at the B.O. when this movie bombs.

  20. Anne says:

Oh my god, the wardrobe people would be better served to NOT put this movie on their resume. If they do, then I doubt anyone else will hire them ever again.

  21. Eve says:

    @ Normades:

Um, if Lilly Collins is supposed to be “the fairest of the land”, that’s gotta be one fug kingdom.

    LOL!

  22. Terri Brandt says:

Is Julia Roberts working again because of the bad economy…scary. I thought she said years ago that her dream job was to be married and stay at home mom. Well..I thought she could…wished she would. I started to like her less and less the more she began talking so much. I liked Notting Hill, but I think that was much more due to Hugh Grant.

  23. Mi says:

I actually like her eyebrows and when it comes to the costumes I kinda like them. They may look better in motion then in stills and to be honest when you see movie costumes in real life most of them look cheap the important bit is how they look when photographed.

  24. MJ says:

Everyone keeps bringing up these two competing Snow White remakes, but what about that really creepy one from the late ’90s with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill?

I won’t go see either one, but at least the adult versions are more true to the stories. Fairy tales are supposed to be dark and disturbing morality stories that scare kids into behaving, not Disney-fied, sugar-coated romantic romps. I sound like Maurice Sendak.

  25. Ari says:

@MJ I loved that one with Sam Neill but he is awesome and can make even the crappiest thing great (weaver as well although she couldnt save abduction)

I will see both just for the hell of it. What I would REALLY love to see is a Snow White and Rose Red movie – the grimms tale is so much better than this disney crap.

  26. Marianne says:

    Busted & Budget?

Thank you! I can’t stop telling people how much these costumes look sooo tacky. The film is gonna suck hard.

  27. tracking says:

Looks dreadful. The costumes look like they were made for a community theater production, so bad.

  28. Coco says:

I just can’t stop giggling at the dwarves.

  29. LIVEALOT says:

i actually like the last photo and the fact that there’s an asian dwarf. diversity! :-p

  30. whome says:

@ sara…. wow u need to get laid! Eiko Ishioka really who cares if it sucks it sucks.. any whoo it looks like a netflix kind of movie for my every other friday family night! at least some little people( not trying to be mean. i think thats the pc term) got work.

  31. alexandra says:

I am astounded that these costumes are from Eiko Ishioka, she did the sublime costumes for Francis Coppola’s Dracula with Gary Oldman and they were amazing. These are dreadful I don’t know if she was stressed out or let an assistant do them but they really are cheap looking and so badly put together they looking like she just attached things together like a big sleeve there a ruffled skirt here. Terrible and I love her stuff

  32. Nina says:

I agree that most of these costumes are hideous. But I am really loving the dress in the last picture. The colors are gorgeous (that blue with orange! OMG WONDERFUL!), the textures are interesting and the shapes flattering. The neckline in particular is very stunning!

  33. podzol says:

Are we sure that these are stills from a movie that will come out in 2012, not some old shots from an 1981 straight-to-video shoot? DAMN this is hideous on many levels. I adore whimsical couture, but this just isn’t alluring in any way.

And Snow White is played by Lily Collins, she of Abduction notoriety? Yeesh.

  34. atlantapug says:

The only thing they need to make this movie complete is cartoon dwarves ala Roger Rabbit.

That’s the image I get when I look at these shots. Overdone in a bad, live-action/cartooney way.

  35. rudypatudie says:

Good Lord, Julia Roberts scared me witless before I even saw these pictures.

  36. Trek Girl says:

No – just no. Maybe this will be a good movie, but from the pictures it just looks…dreck. The costumes aren’t that bad, but it just feels like something is missing from them. I also don’t like Julia Roberts, so her being in it makes me want to dislike the movie anyway.

I will say, however, that this movie could be kind of fun. It seems that some of the movies with the cheesiest costumes, hairstyles, and sets are some of the best.

  37. Hellen says:

“Julia’s playing evil in a way that I don’t think people are going to expect.”

Oh honey, yes we DO expect.

Those costumes look very “unfinished”. If this is a studio production, you know there are a million things that could have been repurposed from the wardrobe dept. that would have looked better than these.

    But that swan-hat is hysterical.

  38. LittleDeadGrrl says:

It does look like a very budget set. Maybe they should have cut Roberts’s salary in half and spent it on fabric that doesn’t look like it was maybe 99 cents a yard.

I died when you said why are the dwarves throwing gang signs. Maybe they’ll rap in this version of Snow White?

  39. TG says:

I am such a sucker for these films! I saw these pics yesterday and am now excited to see the film even if Julia Roberts is in it. It reminds me of the great costumes for Alice in Wonderland. I will probably watch both, though K Stew’s doesn’t look that good to me yet, it is bound to be cheesy and I don’t like watching Medeival movies where everything is brown, gray and dirty.

  40. GiGi says:

Perhaps they’re going for a Lesley Ann Warren as Cinderella circa 1965 feel? Maybe???

  41. mary simon says:

busted and budget. those costumes look incredibly stupid, and Julia looks homely in her Mummer’s Parade creation.

  42. mina says:

Will they try for an English accent for this movie? Lily Collins is British-American so maybe she can pull it off. Julia Roberts, on the other hand, her voice and her laughter…not sure about that.

  43. Lairen says:

I love her brows. But this shit looks terrible.

  44. neelyo says:

Ha ha! Julia looks like she got off a float at Disneyland or something. Cheap, cheap, cheap! The other movie looks like shit too but it looks better than this.

More hollywood nepotism. Lily Collins wouldn’t have a career if she wasn’t Phil Collins’ daughter. And she’s not that pretty.

  45. Original Tiffany says:

That swan makes Bjork look sane. It looks like her Oscar dress dropped acid and rested on Lily Collins head. Which looks like all her Dad’s hair went to her brows.
Julia looks like a budget Elizabeth I to me.

  46. Thea says:

    Is this a comedy?

  47. mouth.like.a.sailor says:

that 2nd picture-the girl with the golden hooded cape on-REALLY reminds me of ‘Labrynth’

sometimes in photos like these it’s really hard to get an accurate vibe of what the movie will actually LOOK and FEEL like ON screen. i don’t think the costumes are as god awful as you all are saying – yes, they are over the top and gawdy, but that’s what unbelievably rich and powerful and ugly people tend to wear.. uh, hello!!! think Donatella Versace. crazy wealthy Eurotrash in the Dolce&Gabbana. some of the stuff is just awful, but the more gold, the more over the top, the more decorated it is, the better. maybe that’s this queen’s look. she IS evil and jealous of youth’s easy and natural beauty. … i don’t know, don’t really care either, i just wanted to throw out a different opinion because i don’t really totally agree with everyone jumping on the “oh my god, these are the ugliest and cheesiest costumes known to man” bandwagon. it’s a fairy tale. meaning it’s all imaginary. it takes place in a made-up time and place, OF COURSE it’s going to look fantastical and weird and over the top. maybe you guys just had a different look pictured in your head for it all – more “luxe” i guess…

  48. anne_000 says:

I like Lily’s yellow hood robe & the blue dress with the white lace neckline. Really nice. Julia’s costumes look bad. I’m kind of surprised that the same designer, Eiko Ishioka, who did “The Fall” did Julia’s dresses. “The Fall” is such a visually beautiful film.

I, also, liked Sam Neill’s Snow White movie.

  49. mouth.like.a.sailor says:

you know, i just looked at the pics a second time and i know it’s probably just me but i am getting a definate “Terry Gilliam/Adventures of Baron Munchausen” vibe. swear to god.

  50. luls says:

All of a sudden, the other one for Kristen Stewart & Charlize Theron, is looking hella more appealing!

But who knows i guess… the final production might look very different. We’ll c.

  51. Camille says:

Awful, awful, awful and VERY budget looking. Going by photos alone I will be avoiding this one like the plague.

The KStew version looks far more interesting by comparison.

  52. california angel says:

Tim Burton is the only director I authorize to revamp fairy tales. lol

  53. Mandi says:

@9>> Julia as an evil bitch? She won’t be doing so much acting, after all.

Agreed! She is an evil, demanding, vapid person. I have seen it first-hand. I wish she would just disappear.

  54. Michelle says:

YES, YES and YES! I love awful movies (in an ironic way, like a hipster) en this is going to be very very very…very bad.

  55. Annie_Grey says:

I see Marty from Pirates otc, and the guy from Pit Boss, in the last picture.

  56. T.C. says:

LMAO @ dwarves throwing gang signs. The movie is a comedy/adventure. The Swan oufit and Julia’s peacock dress are for a costume ball. Kaiser is right, the Kingdom is suffering from a recession so the evil Queen has to live on a low-budget.

Lily looks like Audrey Hepburn in that last shot with the blue dress. I didn’t like her eyebrows at first but they are growing on me. I guess the Brooke Shields look is back.

  57. almond says:

Julia’s dresses look like the childhood designs I improvised out of bedspreads and sheets. Actually, mine looked better because I always made them out of white bed-covers. But these… Talk about a duvet skirt! The costumes are hideous. They’re not whimsical or fun, regardless of who designed them. They’re ugly to the very last fiber and stitch.

Snow’s dresses save some of this mess, but that head swan is really puzzling. And it all looks so budget.

  58. dillene says:

Hmmm, I’ll throw in another dissenting opinion. The costumes don’t look as glitzy as they would if done on Tim Burton’s budget, but I’m still sensing a very ‘1940s fantasy costume drama’ vibe from these. Think ‘The Court Jester’ or any of the zillion costume pics that Maureen O’Hara did.

Apparently Tarsem Singh hasn’t jumped on the gritty realism bandwagon like they had in LOTR or GoT. Too much dirt in those pics, and not enough rhinestones!

  59. Kelly says:

Is this supposed to be a comedy?

  60. dr.bombay says:

    If Julia’s dress doesn’t look budget, then I don’t know what does! It’s h*o*r*r*i*b*l*e!!

  61. Adrien says:

That looks like a catalogue for a Halloween costumes store. Or a Lifetime movie. I don’t know, perhaps it’s the lighting that messed things up. Or those are raw images we are getting. Accentuated the newly sewn gown of the evil queen which made everything look tacky. Also, an Asian dwarf?
Lily’s not too young, she’s 22. No offense, I’ve seen her Met Gala photos and I think she’s really beautiful but I don’t think her beauty upstages Julia. The evil stepmother will have lots of sleep with this.

  62. KLaw says:

Julia Roberts might blow this one out of the water, since she’s got the naturally nasty attitude for it. She won’t be acting at all…

She already ripped out Lili’s hair! Academy Award time!

    I’m curious.

  63. smh says:

who’d have known she’d grow older to resemble glenn close so much

  64. Sara says:

Ok, I’m usually the kind of person who will even defend Sarah Jessica Parker from the nasty comments about her looks. I have to be honest, I think Lily Collins is unattractive. Strange facial features placed on a tiny face…I don’t think she would even be considered attractive by most people if she didn’t have a ton of money to do her makeup/hair (clearly not the eyebrows). I also think the people behind this movie are kind of weird and not professional…I read on Vulture the screenwriter was slamming the other Snow White when the other Snow White had a guy who won a freaking Academy Award come in and fix the script…Meanwhile, the screenwriter from this film wrote a TV movie and Machine Gun Preacher. Plus, I love Tarsem, he is usually very good, but he has also been making digs lately. The classy thing to do would have been to say that they are two very different movies despite being on Snow White, which is true. One seems to be a fantasy adventure while the other is this hot piece of mess.

  65. Esol Esek says:

They may have to bury this where noone can find it. The early reviews are going to be brutal. This thing looks god-awful. Studio execs need to be fired. They have zero taste or imagination.

  66. aquarius64 says:

Lily’s grateful for this bit of PR. This way she’s not only thought of as Taylor Lautner’s cast off girlfriend.

  67. Mish says:

I think her eyebrows look fine. Shes only what, 13? Its nice to see a fresh face once in awhile.

  68. dilettante says:

Maybe the costumes will look better on film. Not that I will find out, since I will never pay to see Julia Roberts in anything. I do think Lily Collins is pretty and not cookie-cutter or plastic-surgery affected, which is refreshing. And let’s face it, we all know she’s not Taylor Lautner’s “cast-off girlfriend”. I’m sure she ran that mile in under 3 minutes.

  69. Sara says:

Mish, that is another issue I have with this…She looks like a child despite being twenty two. I said before I’m usually not harsh at all but I just don’t get this girl or even this movie.

  70. Catherine says:

@ Ari – “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” IS a Grimm tale and completely separate from “Snow White and Rose Red.”

  71. LittleDeadGrrl says:

They both look crazy but I’m sure I’ll see both versions of Snow White. My favorite fairy tale as a child and I’m still a sucker for them.

Fables is a fantastic graphic novels for anyone who likes fairy tales. They give a fantastic version of snow white. I wish they’d use it as inspiration for a movie.

  72. zesty says:

The eyebrow picture looks like something is off with her eyes…maybe that’s just my eyes.

And, yep, not interested, simply because Roberts is in it. I find her generally unpleasant and overrated.

  73. Estella says:

OMG, even Sean Bean can’t save this mess. Isn’t he slated to play the King? And is the dwarf on the left Tyrion from Game of Thrones?

  74. Lemmy says:

    @Mish:

Lily Collins is 22, if you can believe it.

Besides the horrid brows, I think her face is actually cute.

  75. self help says:

the dwarves are the guys from pit boss, the guy from seinfeld, and mini me. what is this?

  76. RuddyZooKeeper says:

Ah, I get it. This is “Shelly Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre,” right? Incidentally, Burton directed some of those. Same style of bad fabric, budget costuming. Probably same hokey acting as well.

  77. erin says:

    mortifying.

  78. F5 says:

    Snow White-The Sesame Street Edition
    ಥ_ಥ

  79. Jennmarie says:

Her eyebrows have always bugged me. They’re so distracting which is a pity. I think shed be even more lovely if she just had a wax.

  80. Sara says:

    Lol, they stole Bjork’s dress.

    This looks awful.

  81. LAK says:

@MJ: Fairy tales are supposed to be dark and disturbing morality stories that scare kids into behaving, not Disney-fied, sugar-coated romantic romps. I sound like Maurice Sendak.
    =======================================

You don’t sound like Maurice Sendak. What you say is very true. Fairy tales are dark disturbing stories. If you read the original stories, it’s the stuff of nightmares. The brothers Grimm stories are particularly grim, no pun intended. Hans Cristiann Anderson tales aren’t as scary, but they are still horrible.

Unfortunately when disney got hold of them, they were changed to the fluffy cute happy stories. Most people are not aware of the change, so omnipresent is disney. I look at it as the way that Vampires have been de-fanged and turned into these lovely, brooding misunderstood creatures who are only longing for love. The particular story that MAurice Sendak mentions is a very good example of the disney-fication of a fairy tale. In the original version, she looses her singing and talking voice, each step she takes on her new legs is described as walking on knife blades, the prince never really gets to know her as she can’t talk, he basically ascribes her the best friend role and he never chooses her, so her sacrifice wasn’t worth it. She dies in the sea, where her body is turned into big surfing waves, and her sisters forever mourn her every time they see the surf when they come up to the surface. Compare that to the disney version!!!!

That said, the first disney cartoon, Snow White, is rightly lauded for having the scariest witch queen ever. All other witch queens and or witches of subsequent tellings, whether fairytales or not, are based on her.

Julia Roberts above doesn’t look scary at all, but like someone said, maybe it will work in motion. To me she looks like a panto villain, which isn’t scary at all.

  82. theaPie says:

I think Lilly looks gorgeous with the dark hair and brows. And yeah, I recognize at least one of those dwarves from Pit Boss. Haha

  83. Angelina Stevens says:

I am forced to agree with your statement “As for Julia Roberts – her costumes SUCK. Why does everything look so cheap?!? I can’t even look beyond the funky costumes. It’s like they’re trying to do Tim Burton on a budget.”

  84. My Darling Pinkett says:

Wow, I actually kind of like these. Weird, I know. I saw them yesterday in some mags. I’m not convinced of the casting at all, but it does look appropriately fairytale-ish, and definitely better than “The Huntsmen”. Maybe the new Disney version will be the better of the three. I doubt any of these will be great, though, or make a huge dent at the BO.

  85. Micah says:

What I find more disturbing than the swan headpiece,
is the fact that she’s wearing a set of wings that looks like Alexis Carrington’s Headboard from Dynasty…

  86. Cherry Rose says:

Meh, I hate to say this, but Snow White and the Huntsman definitely looks better. Not that I would see ever see it, but still, if I was forced to choose, I’d pick that one.

BUT, neither Lily Collins or Kristen Stewart is what I imagined to be “the fairest in all the land”. However, casting Charlize Theron as the evil Queen is definitely a better choice than Julia Roberts.

And my god, are those hideous costumes. O_O; I can make better cosplay costumes than this, and I’m usually on a very cheap budget.

  87. Val says:

The Asian guy playing one of the dwarfs is Ronald Lee Clark, who works with Shorty Rossi on the Animal Planet show “Pit Boss.” Very cool that he has gotten a movie role.

  88. bettyrose says:

@ Jamie – they were called (appropriately) Fairytale Theater, and that “giant frog” was Robin Williams (who I agree should not have been wearing a leotard and tights in children’s production. Ugh.)

  89. jane says:

    hideous costumes

  90. Lastword says:

    This movie is gonna suck.HARD.
They should just change the name to “SNORE WHITE”cos thats all I’ll be doing if i watch this shit
The crappy costumes are the least of it’s worries

  91. ebraca says:

i agree with mouth.like.a.sailor — she looks very Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth, but less groomed. and if you’ve seen Labyrinth, Connelly barely had the unibrow waxed. I’m not sure about this remake. I loved the Neill/Weaver version. Whatever, I would like to see a trailer.

  92. Emily says:

The Queen looks like a budget version of Elizabeth I. Lily looks fine age-wise, in the Disney version Snow White was only 13. I’m not sure how old she was in the traditional story, though.

  93. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Agree with everyone mentioning how dark old school fairy tales are … I wish Hollywood would use those as inspiration and NOT give them a white washed happy ending. Don’t even get me started on what they did to I am Legend. Not a fairy tale but an amazing book they gave a stupid ending to for no reason. Hollywood is almost incapable of making a good movie.

  94. kikay says:

This movie should be titled “The Abduction of Snow White “Part 2.

  95. harfang says:

….Well, at least Ron got a job outside Pit Boss. He’s been wanting that very intensely.

  96. I do trust all the ideas you’ve introduced to your post. They are very convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are very short for beginners. May you please lengthen them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

  97. Jin Adcox says:

  98. Peter says:

I don’t know who lily collins is but her eyebrows are absolutely beautiful!
