Elizabeth Olsen really lives in a 300-sq-foot place, wins Best Actress at Ghent Festival

CB has already covered these photos of Elizabeth Olsen wearing a silver tent-like dress at the ELLE’s Women in Hollywood Tribute gala. However, I’d just like to add that for once, I am proud to say that Lizzie’s dress provides me with the opportunity to declare that “the carpets match the drapes” without sounding perverted in at least the slightest sense. So bravo on that end.

Lizzie has just received the Best Actress award at the Ghent Film Festival for her role in Martha Marcy May Marlene (which also stars John Hawkes and Hugh Dancy), but she’s already so busy filming other movies that Martha director Sean Durkin accepted the award on her behalf. In addition to her current work, she’s already completed work on Silent House (an art-house horror movie), Red Lights (a supernatural drama with Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver), and Liberal Arts (a dramedy with Zac Efron and Josh Radnor). Not too shabby for a 22-year-old who took a year away from college to film a few “little” movies, right?

Since Martha comes out in limited release this week, Lizzie sat down for a few interviews. Here are some relevant excerpts:

On Being Recognized By A Stranger: “It was really weird. I was walking in Tribeca and a guy just came up to me and said, ‘I just saw the trailer for your movie, and I’m really looking forward to it,’ and then he kept on walking,” the young actress recalled. “I hope he wasn’t confusing me with someone else.”

Sean Durkin On Elizabeth: Durkin recalls how Olsen arrived at her audition with four giant suitcases – the accouterments of a frazzled college junior more than Hollywood royalty. “I think I had my detergent with me,” Olsen said. She had had to move out of her apartment the same day, and though she’d stashed some things with Mary-Kate, she was heading to a film set and was essentially homeless. “When the audition was over, I was expecting some big dude to come in and carry her stuff,” Durkin said. “But when I asked her, she’s like ‘Nope,’ and threw some bags over her shoulder. There was something very vibrant and determined about her.”

John Hawkes On Elizabeth: “You can’t help but fall for her. There is an openness and a joy about her, but tempered with street smarts and an intelligence that’s rare for someone her age.”

On The Future: Ms. Olsen anticipates graduating this winter or spring. She said that she would stay in her 300-square-foot one-bedroom apartment in the West Village but that she would also take a partial share in a friend’s apartment in Los Angeles. Besides getting more movie roles, Ms. Olsen said she was eager to land a meaty theater role. Her dream? “I want to play Ophelia in Hamlet, Masha in Three Sisters and, really, really later in life, I’d love to play Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey.”

Career longevity, along with challenging roles, is her goal. “I’m not interested in instant gratification. And I think the only way you can do that is to make choices that are representative of where you are and don’t get caught up in what other people want you to do.”

[From LA Times and NY Times]

So The Enquirer, in their report that Lizzie was living in squalor in a 500-square-foot apartment, was clearly off the mark. Instead, Lizzie makes her home in a mere 300-square feet (enough for a futon, a kitchenette, and a tiny bathroom, perhaps), which is actually a detail that The Enquirer could’ve used to form a more convincing story. Oh well. Regardless of the details, her story is one that’ll see her moving on up in the future.

Back to these photos — Lizzie’s hair and makeup look really good here. She looks more like an Olsen in a good way, not in a narrow-bridged nose way. Perhaps it really was the lighting that made her look so tweaked at the New York Film Festival? Or maybe she just used a better makeup artist.

I’ve lived in smaller apartments. I had one efficiency studio that was probably no more than 120-150 square feet. It was in a great location, I was young, and I loved the place. Hardly squalor, though, which BTW is a reference to cleanliness, not size.

  2. anemoneblue says:

She is so pretty. Looks healthier than her siblings.

  3. ZigZagZoey says:

Seriously? She has 2 rich as hell sisters and they let her live in a tiny apartment? I hate rich people. Yes, HATE.

  4. Strawberrygirl says:

She looks just like her sisters, but she is A LOT prettier.

  5. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

Her nose looks good here so perhaps it is a better make up artist. Also wonder if hollywood folks ever get nose jobs to make their noses bigger?

  6. Kelly says:

@ZigZagZoey, she is her own person – why would her sisters “let” her or “make” her do anything? She can live where she wants, and if she doesn’t want to take money from them (which it sounds like), so be it!

“… don’t get caught up in what other people want you to do”

    Very smart choice of words.

    I really like her!

  8. gee says:

I’ll still take her squalor apartment.

  9. miss_bhaven says:

I guess she is the prettier sister? She is gorgeous!

  10. Diane says:

She’s lovely and seems very grounded.

  11. Hautie says:

    Such a cute girl.

A decent reminder of what the twin sisters would look like, if they decided to pick a good hair color. Get a decent hair cut and wear flattering makeup. Plus wore clothes that fit.

Instead of the the bizarro bag women look they insist on. With the raccoon eye makeup.

  12. TheGoodRain says:

If I were rich, my siblings would still have to make their own way and they’ve told me the same. None of us see the reason why one (or two) siblings’ success should mean that you get to sit on your ass and get taken care of for the rest of your life.

That being said, we did make a deal for school loan repayment and a reasonably-priced car.

  13. Ashley says:

She looks more like Ashley & Mary Kate before they went troll in an attempt to cleanse themselves of the skeeze they felt knowing there was a countdown to being eighteen. And Zoey, they have offered to buy her a place several times over, she refuses.

    She has gorgeous teeth.

  14. theword says:

this is proper advice for young hollywood.don””t get caught up doing the big budget movies…get expirience on the smaller movies then graduate to the big ones..with a small independent thrown in once in a while.. taylor lautner is gonna crash & burn cause he has bad people advicing him

  15. Ashley says:

@ZigZagZoey – According to reports that I’ve seen, she CHOOSES to live in a small place that she can independently afford. She’d rather make her own way in the world in lieu of relying on her sisters’ wealth. An admirable notion considering many in her situation would not do the same.

P.S. – Being rich doesn’t magically turn a person into a jerk. Plenty of good people are rich, and plenty of jerks are poor (and vice versa).

  16. ZigZagZoey says:

Hey, thanks Ashley! That makes me feel better! And I didn’t mean that she should be able to sit on her ass all day…..This makes me respect her.

  17. aenflex says:

yup i like her so far 🙂

  18. jdao says:

    She’s really pretty!

  19. kelbear says:

    Very pretty eyes!

  20. Trillion says:

@ Hautie: Her sisters might exude this kind of beauty if they ever smiled like that too. That’s a genuine, happy, broad smile. What’s not to like?

  21. Lena says:

    She’s beautiful!

  22. gg says:

She’s so cute. I like her. She’s got a genuine smile and looks healthy inside and out.

  23. Ranga says:

Smiling makes a big difference to her face, she looks great with a smile.

  24. sue says:

I live in a 300 square log house. Love my cozy little house. Easy to care for and helps me to live a simple life. You only buy what you need and electricity/heating isn’t as expensive. Save money living in a smaller space. She seems down to earth and wants to do her own thing. Good for her.

  25. Bec says:

    Bad nose job

  26. Mia says:

She is a very pretty girl however, she does not need all that eye makeup.

  27. You actually make it seem so easy along with your presentation however I find this topic to be actually something which I think I might never understand. It kind of feels too complicated and very extensive for me. I am taking a look forward on your subsequent put up, I will try to get the hold of it!
