Ashton Kutcher releases self-pitying whine/rant essay to explain controversy

ashton11

Yesterday, we talked about the scuffle on Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter page, when Ashton got on his Twitter to defend Joe Paterno, then deleted those tweets after all of his Twitter followers basically told him to STFU. Ashton claimed that he didn’t know or realize the full extent of the situation at Penn State, and he apologized and said that he was going to stop tweeting. That lasted a few hours, and then he started tweeting again, of course. He tweeted the header photo tagged “What’s a picture worth?” and of course he also had to give us a lengthy, self-absorbed essay on why we shouldn’t blame him for being so crass and stupid. Here is that essay, titled “Twitter Management”. The only editing I’ve done on this is some paragraph breaks:

Up until today, I have posted virtually every one of my tweets on my own, but clearly the platform has become too big to be managed by a single individual. When I started using twitter, it was a communication platform that people could say what they were thinking in real time and if their facts were wrong the community would quickly and helpfully reframe an opinion. It was a conversation, a community driven education tool, and opinion center that encouraged healthy debate.

It seems that today that twitter has grown into a mass publishing platform, where ones tweets quickly become news that is broadcast around the world and misinformation becomes volatile fodder for critics.

Last night after returning home from work, I walked by the television and simply saw a headline that Joe Paterno had been fired. Having no more information than that, I assumed that he had been fired due to poor performance as an aging coach. As a football fan and someone who had watched Joe’s career move from that of legend/innovator to a head coach that fulfilled his duty in the booth, I assumed that the university had let him go due to football related issues.

With that assumption (how dare I assume) I posted a tweet defending his career. I then when about my evening, had some dinner, did a little work, and about an hour later turned on ESPN where I got the full story. I quickly went back on my twitter account and found a hailstorm of responses calling me an “idiot” and several other expletives that I’ve become accustom to hearing for almost anything I post. I quickly retracted and deleted my previous post; however, that didn’t seem enough to satisfy people’s outrage at my misinformed post.

I am truly sorry. And moreover am going to take action to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. And as an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more deeply saddened by the events at Penn State.

A collection of over 8 million followers is not to be taken for granted. I feel responsible to deliver informed opinions and not spread gossip or rumors through my twitter feed. While I feel that running this feed myself gives me a closer relationship to my friends and fans I’ve come to realize that it has grown into more than a fun tool to communicate with people. While I will continue to express myself through @Aplusk, I’m going to turn the management of the feed over to my team at Katalyst as a secondary editorial measure, to ensure the quality of its content. My sincere apologies to anyone who I offended. It was a mistake that will not happen again.

[From Ashton’s Twitter]

I just… Jesus, he’s such a douche-face. Let’s take it point by point:

*“Where ones tweets quickly become news that is broadcast around the world and misinformation becomes volatile fodder for critics.” First, it should be “one’s”. Second, where was the misinformation besides Ashton’s OWN lack of information. It’s not “misinformation” to say “Ashton Kutcher tweeted this, and then deleted it.” That’s reporting. And those “critics” are the same people who are defending CHILDREN who were raped and abused – a cause that Ashton should be well aware of, right?

*“Last night after returning home from work, I walked by the television and simply saw a headline that Joe Paterno had been fired…” I realize that television work moves faster than film work, and Ashton might even need to be at the studio for 16-hour days or something, but he’s got a giant trailer and he’s got enough breaks in his day – the only way you could avoid hearing about this story is if he literally hadn’t picked up a newspaper, read anything online or watched TV all week. Which I don’t buy.

*“With that assumption (how dare I assume)”… this is the problem stupid people have with free speech. Free speech doesn’t just apply to you. It also applies to people who disagree with you. Ashton as the right to say, tweet, write, assume, whine, cry and lie about whatever he wants to. Everyone else has the right to respond and call him a d-bag. That’s free speech.

*The whole last paragraph is just funny. Like his Twitter page is a newspaper or something. “Editorial control” = bitch please. Go bone some club girls, doucheface.

    What an asshat.

  2. RovingLass says:

Totally agree, Kaiser. If he had been having this conversation in real life with other human beings, they would have called him out on it too.

Besides whoever needs 8 million “followers” must have a god complex or delusions of grandeur.

Since I don’t know how to tweet, just let me say, “Ashton, soap is your friend”. 🙂

  3. Sadie says:

Yes Ashton is a douche, so why is very one shocked he did something douchey.
I for one believe he had no idea of the scandal, as with most celebs and other self absorbed people he doesnt have a clue what goes on outside his little world.

  4. Franny says:

I think its a bit extreme to now let his management team take over his twitter. how about your just inform yourself for 3 seconds longer instead of telling 8 million people something? i fact check most of my facebook statuses (stati? haha) and I only have 1000 friends.

also, as a fan of the Big10, something like this could have made him stop for longer than a second to see what happened. I find it hard to believe that he would just see a headline “JoePa fired” and be like “oh, interesting…where’s the nearest hottub”.

  5. What is with the hats?? Is that a nod to his Kaballah religion?

  6. GoodCapon says:

His self-imposed exile on Twitter lasted less than 24 hours. How disappointing.

  7. brin says:

When are thes twits going to realize that the smartest thing is to STFU.

  8. Cindy says:

What is the point of having a Twitter if other people are “managing” it for you? Does he promote his show or other things on it?

This Penn State thing is disturbing on so many levels. I’m disgusted it happened, I’m disgusted that it was reported to school officials instead of police, and I’m disgusted that all these young students are fixated on protecting Paterno instead of thinking of the victims. Sad all around.

  9. lisa says:

I’m curious.. when he went home Where was Demi..

He didn’t say anything about talking to his wife or such.

    Where oh where was Demi????

  10. Jackie says:

i love that celebrities tweet! now, we can see what they are really like, instead of the carefully crafted images usually projected by the hollywood machine.

with twitter, in alot of cases, handlers are not involved – obviously, he is such a tool he needs them.

  11. Jacq says:

I love how the Nikon commercials still portray him as a woman-loving douche who creeps around and takes long-distance photos of them. Priceless.

  12. Kelly says:

Why isn’t he gone yet? Why the hell is he even relevant in the first place? I can’t name a single movie he’s been in since “Dude, Where’s My Car.”

  13. bren says:

I agree! He is a narcissistic douche!

In September he tweeted: “When you ASSUME to know that which you know nothing of you make an [BLEEP] out of U and ME.”

    What a moron!!

  14. Miranda says:

@Bren: My thoughts exactly. How that remark comes back to bite him in the ass is priceless.

  15. RovingLass says:

@Jackie, so true. The mask falls a bit. Love it too.

  16. Nancy C. says:

this is part of the price of fame. good with the bad and all that. also one of the down falls of the community pages.

  17. Rhiley says:

If I worked at that lame douche “company,” Katalyst, I would sincerly hate that my “job” now includes “editing” Ashton Kutcher’s tweets. I know you have said it once this morning, Kaiser, but it is worth repeating,”Bitch, please.”

  18. Jessica says:

    what a turd.

  19. Mark says:

Last year urged his fans via twitter to boycott the “Village Voice”, he accused them of promoting child prostitution.

That guy is a real hypocrite, now he get a taste of his own medicine.

  20. Rhiley says:

I am kind of glad that Joseph Gordon-Levitt hasn’t gone too mainstream, but he is the celebrity that really understands and uses social media and other technology wisely, with oringality, and with purpose.. Ashton Kutcher doesn’t have an origial thought in his head and it is sad (and says a lot about our country) when somebody like him is named one of Time’s Most Influential People. I can’t believe that there are people still drinking his Kool Aid. *shakes head*

  21. gee says:

If I made an error of judgement because I was misinformed or uninformed, I’d probably call myself out. I’d be all “OOPS, I need to read more, this stuff’s horrible.” Why is it so hard to admit you’re wrong, Ashton??

  22. Str8Shooter says:

I love that this guy thinks he is the second coming of the Messiah, and just ‘assumes’ that the whole world hangs on his every word as if it is Gospel.

    Arrogant, self-important, annoying DOUCHEBAG.

  23. Lady_Luck says:

No matter what he says on ANY issue, it still doesn’t change the fact that he is a gormless, cheating douchebag.

Ashton, do us all a favour and STFU!!!

  24. Leticia says:

Yet another uneducated clown/entertainer who takes himself too seriously. He is a baby-man.

  25. poopie says:

well i know I start MY day by running for my phone to read the ASSHAT tweets! it’s hysterical that HE ACTUALLY THINKS WE think he’s got anything of importance to say. he put HIS TEAM on it? STFU PLEASE

  26. theaPie says:

What an immature asshole. The more he says the more he reveals just what a dolt and douche he really is. How could anyone be in love with THAT? (Do you hear me Demi?)

  27. SANDIP says:

I am sick of him. He is trying to get Charlie Sheen’s bad boy image so that the show can get Charlie Sheen ratings. Fooling around on Demi and now ths. Sorry Ashton, we can not be fooled, you are no Charlie Sheen. Get a hair cut and shave and try again.

  28. The Original Mia says:

So ridiculous. He made the mistake. He was misinformed. He’s the one that wanted to have 8 million people following his every tweet. He’s the one that makes money off his tweets, but…it’s wrong of those 8 million to tell him he’s a misinformed douchebag. Lordy…this jackass. I can’t even…

  29. james says:

some people have a ‘collection’ of hummel figurines.this one has a ‘collection’ of twitter followers.

  30. Rita says:

The Penn State scandal runs very wide and very deep. I sent an email to the PSU board of trusties demanding that Paterno and everyone else be fired.

This story is just begining. There are new allegations that the pedophile was pimping out children to rich alum. Then there is the murder of the county DA several years ago. I wish the FBI would investigate this top to bottom.

  31. Kimbob says:

Bwahahahaaaaah! Oh it KILLS ME how this doofus tries to DEMAND that we all take him seriously.

    Let’s see….
TV credits: “Punk’d,” “That 70’s Show,” and now “2.5 Men.”
Movies: Umm, I can’t recall ONE TITLE!
Lowlights: Casual encounters w/bimbos who then sell said encounters to media for $$$. “Twitter King”
    Marriage: Means NOTHING to him

What qualifies him to be taken seriously? He truly fancies himself as an intellectual…in-f#@king-credible!!!

Also, I just LOVE the way he’s pandering!! He’s really BEGGING for respect…un-f#$king-believable!!!

  32. TaylorB says:

Could someone explain to my why on G*ds green earth 8 million people would want to follow that halfwit on Twitter to begin with.

  33. Anon says:

Whatever his common sense or judgment, he’s doing well in Two and a Half Men, finally. The latest episode, which let up on the gratuitous nudity, was actually quite funny.

  34. Sigh. says:

He’s hiring PR for his tweets? Lord…

So when something halfway intelligent happens to be tweeted, he’ll stand out front and take full responsibility for someone else’s work, and the NEXT time he says/tweets something stupid (I have no doubt there WILL be next time), he’ll have a scapegoat/human shield to cower behind, blame, then fire.

    Whatever, Kelso.

  35. flourpot says:

One’s? One is. One has. Are you sure? I’m confuzeled.

“Where ones tweets quickly become news that is broadcast around the world and misinformation becomes volatile fodder for critics.”

  36. Embee says:

Indicating the possessive. The tweets belong to one.

  37. Tiffany says:

I got around to finishing the grand jury testimony yesterday. I went to bed and just lied awake and cried. These poor children, my heart just breaks. You just want to wrap your arms around then and hold on and not let go.I am not a parent so I cannot imagine how they will cope with outside interest. There is no excuse for Kutcher on this one. who reads a headline and then ignore the story. That is like coming on the site and just commenting and acting as if I know all. My fellow bitches will call me on it. This asshole really though no one would.

  38. kieslwoski says:

Kaiser, toatlly agree with you 100%. This guy is such a loser, says so much about Demi that she first of all married this moron and is now clinging to him.

  39. Embee says:

All of his justifications for “why” totally negate the sincerity of his apology.

This is one of those times, Ashton, that you don’t get to explain yourself. The only relevant thing to say is “I was wrong. I am very sorry.”

All this crap about how Twitter has gotten bigger and what you saw on tv is just masturbatory on your part. Please stop.

  40. Cathy says:

    Buttcrack

  41. Angel says:

He is saying what I have been saying for ages and eventually what all celebs will say who are on twitter. Twitter has become nothing more than fodder for tabloids and gossip shows. Gossip sites like this one now write ENTIRE columns on one tweet. the trivia portion of entertainment shows is now ‘who said this on twitter?!?’, and any celeb who says anything remotely controversial on twitter, is instantly jumped on by that aspect of the media. It’s become a tracking device for the media rather than a fan forum. Yes, he was misinformed but aren’t we all at one point or another? I know I’m not perfect. I don’t blame them for leaving twitter, unfortunately with the way the media is on to it now it isn’t possible for them to use it just to communicate with fans as it once was. Not a fan of Ashton or particularly defending him, I am speaking in a more general sense. Kristen Stewart got attacked for pointing this out not long ago, and I think it’s because she didn’t make the specific distinction that it isn’t the fans fault, but that the vampiric nature of the media had sunk their fangs into twitter and ruined any beneficial aspects it may have once had for celebs. These people are held under strict scrutiny by their PR people, for a reason. Don’t be surprised if, if people keep playing into the media’s new fixation with twitter, your fav celeb is no longer ALLOWED to tweet. It’s sad really, because everyone loses in the end; the celebs can’t use a social network site they clearly enjoy, and their millions of fans lose out on communicating directly with their fav celebs.

They are only human, subject to blunders. He acknowledged his mistake, apologized and we well know it isn’t something he endorses, ffs. People are too damn reactionary, these days. It’s so stifling.

  42. Heather M (Heather) says:

Oh. My. Gosh. I just saw photos of Demi on X-17 online where she looks like she has aged–no kidding–20 years since the last photo a month or so ago. How is that possible?!!!! Is it Photoshop?? I just cannot believe what a toll this jerk is taking!

Re: aging well– A Jolie reminds me not to wear red lipstick and Demi reminds me not to stay in stressful situations!

  43. Nancito says:

@aplusk is obviously already hard at work “managing” for Ashton – are we supposed to believe that this bonehead came up with “volatile fodder” on his own.

  44. Incredulous says:

On the other hand, how hard is it to acknowledge you don’t know about a subject in the first place and then educate yourself?

    Fame != Intelligence. (Or knowledge)

  45. The Original Mia says:

There’s nothing wrong with Twitter. It didn’t do anything to Ashton. All it did was allow something that Ashton shouldn’t have said to be publicized to millions. He’s just embarrassed because he came across as an misinformed twat, instead of the cool jokester he makes himself out to be. He should stop trying to shift the blame and just stfu.

  46. Cerulean says:

The Penn State thing is one of the most vile things I have seen unfold in a long time. I am no babe in the woods either. My rose colored glasses got ripped off my face as a child so it’s not for nothing that I say that.
Ashton is a bold faced liar. He just realized what he said was unpopular. You knew good and well what the freaking story was. For him to tweet means he had strong enough feelings to spend the moments tweeting. So dont tell us you didnt know. God I hate this preening fool. You can’t defend someone who did nothing to protect these poor children. I would have gone all ninja assassin on that pedo and killed him where he stood. There is NO defending anyone who kept it quiet. None.

So yes Ashton, go screw your club girl(good one btw) and shut your stupid dumbass mouth. Take a vow of silence and do the world a favor.

  47. Kara Ann says:

I cannot stand Kutcher. In this instance, I don’t hate him. He tweeted and apologized (and over-explained) the tweet.

I have been avoiding reading about the Penn State situation until this morning. I am horrified. Also, I hope everything gets thoroughly investigated and all crimes are punished. As for anyone who knew about this situation and didn’t report it to the police, while they might not be held criminally negligent, they are morally bankrupt and reprehensible. NOTHING is more important than the welfare of children. Not a stupid football game/coach/score and not the reputation of any institution…maybe, others will watch and learn to do the right thing!

  48. lucy2 says:

I just want to punch him in his stupid face.

Love how he’s blaming twitter for being too big, because he made a boneheaded, uninformed post and people called him on it.
Just like it’s the media fault when they called him out on his wandering dong.
GROW UP AND BE A REAL MAN FOR ONCE.

  49. Kimberly says:

Ashton is a scared little baby right now. His fans aren’t really there anymore.

2.5 Men has lost half the viewers it had in the beginning of the season.HaHa Ashton you suck!

I think his ego is being deflated and he can’t handle it.

    show heading down the drain
    marriage already over
his stupid twitter account that no one really cares about

I don’t remember the last time I even watched a movie with him in it . . . and 2.5 is dumb they just should have shut it down, but people are money hungry so . . .

  50. ol cranky says:

I’m sorry he would have had to be completely incommunicado with no access to any media for at least 24 – 48 hours prior to the announcement of Paterno being fired AND have completely missed the rest of the headline to Paterno’s firing that referenced the scandal. Seriously, every headline I saw/read and announcements I heard on the radio had the reference to the reason Paterno was fired. I call serious BS that Kutcher didn’t know why Paterno was fired. I think he expected a round of supporting cries of Joe Pa being a “scape goat” in response to his tweet and learned that the public at large is sick and tired of celebrity entitlement (include that entitlement that comes from being a sports figure at the college level).

The only thing that disgusts me more than the riots against firing that “good man” of charity Joe Pa who did so much for PSU is the fact that I’m hearing folks in the athletic department there are encouraging people to wear white to show support for Joe Pa. Really?!?

  51. LBeees says:

    What a douchey-McDoucherstein.

I personally like the audacious and overreaching bit where he claims he is going to do something to stop this from ever happening again.

Uh, really? What the deuce can HE do to stop child abuse from EVER HAPPENING AGAIN?!?! Except forcibly making twig-and-berry castrati of the world’s entire male population, of course.

    I HATE HIM!

  52. Wildone says:

(I find it funny when people say while he apologized)

Like he had a choose in the matter if this is the backlash lash he got for his comment with and apologize just think about what the backlash would be if he DIDN’T apologize try the end of his career; not just for his comment but also because he is an actives for underage sex trafficking.

  53. Jover says:

Rhiley Time actually named this asshat as one of the most influential pissants; was it let’s smoke PCP that day in the editorial office. ANd #30 that allegation about pimping out those children was made this spring in a column by a local schock jock talk show host long before this story broke- we’ll see; i live in pa and the grand jury report is stomach churning; i’ve read it.

  54. Ali says:

Ashton, take your stupid hat, STFU, and go away you useless tool!

  55. leetruth says:

Ashton is a disgrace and a manipulative weirdo. He had full knowledge of what led to Paterno’s dismissal but chose to support the raping of vulnerable children.

  56. victoria says:

He’s a dick and why do we care at all I implore!!! No BESEECH!!!!! Ugh..
He was popular in eighth grade.. cutest couple, best smile but that shit’s it. WORD

  57. Howard99 says:

This reminds me of the time Trent Reznor (nine inch nails guy) quit twitter when he got called out for being a douchebag idiot. He wrote a long essay on his website blaming Twitter, fat chicks, and everyone else except himself. It’s like both these guys think their tweets are a gift and expect everyone to love whatever they write.

Wish Ashton had gotten some editing for that last essay, it’s riddled with errors.

And wasn’t this the guy who said there should be “gatekeepers” to the internet? Didn’t he go on and on about editing standards in his last brain fart of an essay?

  58. hatekyle says:

I would be more interested if he wrote “My Bathtub Memoirs.”

  59. Carolyn says:

Ashton’s PR agent told him to apologise. How does someone get to have such a delued opinion of themselves? Does he have an entourage telling him he’s great 24/7? He’s becoming so unlikeable it’s not funny. He’s in Hillary Swank category of unlikeability. Are 2.5 men producers yahooing over their casting decision now?

  60. Jaded says:

Maybe this will be the catalyst for Demi to push his useless ass out of her life for good instead of playing the sad, skinny, pining away little victim. She’s played the celebrity game for decades and this shows how far she’s willing to go to garner attention and sympathy. Remember those awful pictures she had taken of herself in bed with her mother as she lay dying of cancer? Remember the nude pregnant pictures? If that’s not famewhoring at its best what is?

  61. ShanKat says:

Breaking news: The guy from Punk’d is a twat!

But we’re not talking about his crappy marriage anymore…

I live on a tiny Greek island off the coast of Italy, and I knew about the Penn scandal. I’m certain he got the tweets about it from his multi-million dollar entertainment center on the Radford lot.
