Well, this was a long time coming. Mel Gibson and Robyn Gibson’s divorce has, at long last, been finalized. Mel and Robyn were married for nearly 30 years, but she started divorce proceedings on Mel back in April, 2009. Between that time and now, Mel impregnated Oksana Gregorieva, and they had a baby girl. The custody dispute between Mel and Oksana took less time than Mel and Robyn’s divorce. Would you like to know why? Because Robyn was getting PAID.
Mel Gibson is now legally single after his divorce was finalized Friday in a Los Angeles courtroom, but bachelorhood came at a heavy price.
Robyn, his ex-wife of nearly 30 years and the mother of their seven children, is walking away with half his fortune, once estimated to be as high as $850 million (according to the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2006) in what is considered the biggest divorce payout in Hollywood history.
Because the couple didn’t have a prenuptial agreement, Robyn, 55, was legally entitled to half of everything he earned during their marriage.
Among Gibson’s estimated assets: more than $600 million grossed by The Passion of the Christ alone; $100-plus million in real estate investments worldwide (he bought an island in Fiji for $15 million in 2005); and $75 million for film and TV projects for which Gibson, 55, executive produced.
It appears some of his wealth has already been transferred to Robyn, in particular two Malibu homes worth a combined $22.5 million. As for film residuals, Robyn is entitled to half of every future check Gibson receives for the rest of his life.
“I left my wife because we had no spiritual common ground,” Gibson told his then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in secretly recorded tapes she made of the actor in February 2010.
During his custody battle with Grigorieva, in which the Russian musician accused Gibson of domestic violence, Robyn filed a sworn statement in July 2010 stating that “Mel was a wonderful and loving father” and never abused Robyn or their kids.
Gibson met Robyn, at the time a dental nurse, in the late 1970s after the American-born actor, who moved to Australia when he was 12, had filmed his breakout role in Mad Max.

I always thought that she came out and claimed that Mel had never been violent with her because it was part of the divorce negotiations. Robyn battled hard for the money, and she got what she wanted.

I doubt that Robin is a manipulative golddigger. Considering that there’s no prenup and California is a 50/50 state she was going to get half anyway. She was probably telling the truth that she and the kids weren’t abused. Isn’t she just as religious as Mel claims to be? I think that’s why the divorce took so long. She wasn’t in a rush for a divorce. She didn’t even file for a year or 2 after the separation.

I think she felt a moral obligation to protect her husband. I think she was really religious and submitted completely to him and probably felt it was still her duty to protect him. Glad she’s rid of the bastard and glad she’s got that money. Hopefully she can move on now.

She supported him when he was a struggling actor, she took care of their 7 children (nannies or not, she was rarely seen in public and stayed home to be a mother, she was not a celeb), she married him! It’s their money, whatever he earned during their holy matrimony is theirs. I think she held out long enough for the children to be adults and take this news or change in a more understanding way. They don’t have to “fight” over custody agreements (only 1 child is a minor). I also think because she was so religious and strict, she didn’t want to give up on the marriage even when times were really tough.

Very insightful, I based my opinions on those links and well, on Gibson’s behaviour as a man in general.
Sometimes too much is too much. She endured enough to give up the marriage without guilt of not trying too hard. When she filed for divorce, I think it was because Gibson impregnanted Grigorieva. He has done so much that go against their religion (and she is even more strict!) that it was probably too hard to keep on pretending the marriage was worthy enough to exist (they were separated for three years but only filed after that pregnancy). Maybe the child out of wedlock forced her to end it herself (I bet he’s one of those guys that doesn’t want to seem like “the quitter”). It’s one thing to cheat, it’s another thing to publically make a child with your mistress. Grinning and bearing becomes torture. What a vile coward.
Okay, Mel is an asshole of the highest degree, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he is a good filmmaker and a good actor…Braveheart was an excellent film.

@Lucy I adored Mel in Braveheart along with many others. As an Aussie it’s extra disappointing to see him go off the rails as badly as he has (he was an absolute hero over here until recently). He has indeed done a lot of amazing roles (even The Patriot) and is a good director (I even liked Apocalypto)…it’s hard now to separate the man he is now from how he is portrayed on screen. True, his earlier roles should be enjoyed for what they were 🙂

After 30 years and seven children (all without demanding publicity for herself), she earned every penny of it. However, I do agree with Morticians that there may not be much in future payouts to collect.

Let’s not forget that OJ did not physically abuse his first wife, only Nicole. Of course, he was abusive in other ways, but not physically. Abusers carefully pick and groom their victims, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he did not hit Robin or his kids, but was a domineering, abusive asshole in other ways. I am quite sure that Robin’s stabilizing influence helped him keep the crazy in some kind of check and on some level of hush for as long as it was, which helped him keep his lucrative career healthy for some time. Even though her payout is more than just, it isn’t enviable at all when you look at how she earned every penny. Biggest payout of all time for being married to the biggest prick of all time for 30 years. No thanks.

I am sad at what has become of Mel Gibson. I adored him “back in the day” – the hotness, the accent, the movies….and loved the fact that he was a devoted family man in real life.

A nasty man with a team of lawyers could hold up justice for decades, I’d think. Also, she may have been so downtrodden from all those years with him, she automatically obeyed.
