Jay-Z isn’t going to use the word “bitch” now that has a daughter

Personally, I like the word “bitch.” I think most women feel the word has been reclaimed from “something derogatory men would say about women” to “something women say about themselves, a word that denotes fierceness and awesomeness.” I’m a bitch. And you probably are too, especially since you’re on a site called Celebitchy. Now, just because “bitch” has been “reclaimed” doesn’t mean that the old, derogatory “bitch” name-calling still doesn’t happen. Frequently. For example, rap lyrics are full of misogyny (and homophobia, and racism, and everything else). But from here on out, Jay-Z wants us to know that we are no longer bitches to him. Now that he has a daughter, he will never use the word “bitch.” He wrote a poem about it. For real.

Jay-Z has vowed to drop the word “bitch” from his lyrics after the birth of his daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

The rapper, who celebrated the birth of his first child with wife Beyonce earlier this month, has released a poem dedicated to his daughter in which he promises never to drop the word “bitch” again.

In the poem, the rapper writes: “Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich/I didn’t think hard about using the word bitch/I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it/Now with my daughter in this world I curse those that give it”.

He also goes on to swear he will protect her and that the “degradation has passed”. He writes: “No man will degrade her, or call her name. I’m so focused on your future, the degradation has passed. I wish you wealth, health and insight. Forever young you may pass. Blue Ivy Carter, my angel”.

Blue Ivy Carter became the youngest person ever to be credited on the US Billboard chart last week.

Jay-Z released a new track earlier this week which is titled ‘Glory’ and is dedicated to his daughter. The track features her coos and cries, for which she is officially credited and entered the Billboard Chart at Number 74, the highest new entry on the chart this week.

[From NME]

It’s interesting that it took the birth of his daughter to change Jay’s bitch-calling ways and not his marriage to Beyonce. Married to Bey? Women are still bitches. Fathering a daughter? NO MORE BITCHES. Whatever, I don’t really care. I’m too old to be prickled by insensitive rap lyrics, so it doesn’t make any difference to me. Of course, I’m currently on a mission to reclaim the C-bomb. I’m totally a C-bomb too.

PR move indeed as he mentions nothing about the words ho, slut, C U next tuesday, etc. that are mainstays of a lot of rap lyrics, and are IMO worse than the B word.

Yeah, this is right out of Beyonce’s playbook. Jay Z and most of these ex-thug rappers are hypocrites. They use, and sell, these negative ideas as part of their schtick but when they have a kid, suddenly it’s sorry, my child is too good for that sh*t. You know, it’s because it’s THEIR child. Too bad for the other people’s kids they subjected to their crap in the past, only their kids are worthy of respect and reverence. I used to like Jay Z long ago, but the richer he got the bigger an as*hole diva he became. He and Beyonce are so high off their own fumes they don’t even realize how ridiculous they’ve become.

I think when a man has a little girl to protect in the world, it can really make him see things in a completely different light. Bey is a grown woman, he knows she can take care of herself. I think Jay will be a good dad :)

Exactly. I am uncomfortable with the term “wh-re” and try not to use it or the words “b-tch” or “c-nt” in daily conversation. It’s just crass and I think says a lot for the person using it. Especially when it is a man using these terms. I guess it is like the n-word for blacks. The word is bad as it is but even worse when someone who isn’t black uses it. Kinda shows you the way he views women and their value. Too bad it took the birth of his daughter to change that. I’m guessing it was okay for him to call a woman a b*tch but if someone calls his daughter a b*tch then that person is going down. Newsflash to Jay-Z: ALL women and girls deserve respect, not only his little princess.

I respect those women who turn it on its head, but I hate the word bitch, because it still has a connotation of being someone’s “bitch”. It’s not an empowering term in the eyes of most of the world, and I think the turning-the-meaning-around sense is lost on most people.
Regarding Jay Z – I hate people who can’t understand an issue or why something they’re doing is wrong/stupid until they have a kid or can otherwise relate it to their own lives. It reminds me of Tommy Lee saying he only started driving like a sane person, not drunk or speeding, when his kids were born. Like other people don’t matter, too.

      Both opinions: strong! Agree.

I think it’s powerful that woman took a degrading term from men and made it positive for them. Beating them at their own game. However, it’s still sucks that as you say, the positive meaning is lost on most people. A woman who is strong-willed, knows what she wants how and when? Bitch! A woman who takes charge and doesn’t like being pushed around? Bitch! A woman who doesn’t care what others say and lives her life by her own rules? Bitch! Sad. I guess some people don’t like women taking control and want them to be caring and considerate all the time, nurturing other people’s needs.

I know this has been pointed out a million times but as someone who works in the financial services industry the double standard applied to men and women is amazing. Women who are powerful, successful, but demanding of a certain work standard are ceaselessly referred to as ‘bitches’. Men possessing the same professional attributes are looked at as role models who demand respect. After hearing so many women called “bitch” by angry dudes in suits, it starts to really wear thin..

Report this comment as spam or abuse

      • @TheOriginalKitten: It’s rampant in academia, too. Just the other day I advocated for more money for our tiny parapsych lab and overheard a fellow professor call me a bitch because I didn’t think more more money was needed for his currently overfunded dead-end project (and no, I didn’t call it that, I simply said that he’s gotten the bulk of the psych department open endowment funds and the “wealth” should be shared.) The males who asked for more funds weren’t called bitches. Just me and another female prof.

The only time the word bitch really pisses me off is when men use it in a degrading way, or when they use it to name call. I think the reason I feel this way is because I don’t think there is a word or name that exists that we can call men that elicit those same feelings as the word bitch does to women. Then again, it is somewhat easy to make a man feel very small, especially if he has the mentality to call me a bitch in the first place. I don’t play.

I’m a big fan of hip hop. I don’t like Jay Z, and I’ve never liked his music. So now he sees the error of his ways? His mother is a woman and so is his wife, but they weren’t important enough to stop using misogynistic language? I blame both of those….(wait for it)…..bitches!

I always feel conflicted when it comes to a lot of (all) rap songs. (Don’t get me wrong, there are many rap songs I like, though I prefer R&B+Rap songs) & I’d never put a whole genre in 1 category.

But it seems like *most* of the time, when I really stop to listen to what’s being said… It comes down to either (very) explicitly describing what some guy ‘has done, is doing, or wants to do’ with/to a woman (or 3…)

…*Or* will talk about violence &/or drugs/alcohol. Like I said, they aren’t all like that, & definitely no offense intended to those who are really into rap. It just bums me out to hear great music only to realize the lyrics are unnecessarily over-the-top nasty.

I’m kinda indifferent to the word bitch but I never really saw ‘reclaiming a word’ as working. You can call yourself something, repeat it over and over, soften yourself to it but as soon as someone calls you it purely to hurt and degrade you the word is right back where it started.

I know a lot of women shrug at bitch but will castrate a man for c-bomb (which was always the stronger of the two).

As for Jay Z…jigga please! He and his wife are such a joke. Glad to know until you physically created a respectable girl child (that poor boy in Paris) we were still bitches but now…well shucks, your daughter is one of us. Guess WE’RE not so bad.

    Welcome to my hood
    My hood

    Giving you false hope
    That if you put two

You could get out da hood foreva
As long as you cop a light bitch
    With a European weave
    And who also ain’t afraid
    Of a sell out mentality

doesn’t matter…there are plenty of rappers who will refer to her one…and a lot of them will be following Jay-Z’s lead.

Yes, because unless a man has a daughter, women are just bitches.

I think the N word is much more offensive and I hate the fact that people have started using it….It just makes me cringe.

Memo to Jay-Z, who supposedly vowed to give up using the word “bitch” in his songs in deference to his new daughter Blue Ivy: TOO LITTLE TOO LATE! Your songs degrading women are already out there and always will be, even if you don’t record any more. The damage has been DONE by you and your fellow rappers and it will take more than erasing a word to change your revolting attitude toward women. If you’re looking for a pat on the back because you might have finally realized the damage you’ve done to the female sex, don’t hold your breath. Blue Ivy will grow up in the misogynistic world you and your fellow rappers created.

He said this sometime after he had gotten married too, I think. I saw it on TresSugar as well. Of course I still think he is a hypocrite.

He’s a hypocritical Ho, he sells commercial crap and calls it art.

I do like Mary J. Blige, Marshall Mathers, Kanye, and others who put out great music and feel absolutely no need to FAKE apologize for who they are or pretend to be something they’re not. They are what they is, make great music, and I respect artists who do their thing.

With my husband or friends, we say “p—-”, and c You Next Tuesday in a friendly happy way (Never ever as a put down), but none of us favors or uses ‘Bitch’. It’s tacky and demeans women, period.

I don’t want to ‘reclaim’ pejorative terms for women, especially because there are too many out there to count!

So, if he thinks it’s wrong now, on some level he knew it was wrong then. Unless he thought it was just any other gender-specific noun and Beyonce gave birth to a dictionary. I’ll bet that didn’t happen. I can’t imagine what people are going to be compelled to say about his innocent daughter, now. Hell, I’m a tiny bit compelled (just some residual infantile ‘see how you like that!’ contrariness) but the key is to exercise consideration when it comes to other people’s babies. Imagine that, there are people who aren’t me who exist. Crazy world.
