Liv Tyler: “I’m learning every day how to get through life and the world”

I just adore Liv Tyler. I think it’s her vulnerability, which seems genuine. I also always remember seeing her kiss Davis Bowie’s hand when she first met him on The Late Show. It was like she was in awe of him and didn’t know what else to do, and it came across as sweet. (I googled that to see if I could find a video, and I did and I remembered it wrong! He kissed her hand first.)

Anyway Liv has been in a lot of emotional turmoil since the end of her five year marriage, to British rocker Royston Langdon, in 2008. She did an interview with Wonderland magazine around the time of her split and it just broke my heart. She said at the time “There’s nothing worse than heartache, being lovesick. It’s like there’s a physical sickness.” She’s 34 and it’s been a few years since her breakup. She’s rich and she’s raising a little seven year-old boy who sounds like he brings a lot of light and love into her life. So I’m hoping that things are looking up for Liv, but in a new interview with Marie Claire UK she still seems like she’s hurt and struggling. That’s just how she’s always been, to hear Liv explain it. Here’s more:

On going East Coast for her son Milo:
“I’m always trying to figure out what’s best for him [Milo] as a person. The kind of person I want him to be. The values I want him to have. Much as I love my friends and LA, I want him to have more of an East Coast upbringing. The sense of community. Walking to school four blocks away.”

On gradually getting over her divorce:
“I feel like I’m learning every day how to get through life and the world. Not just from the divorce. I felt that way throughout my whole life, ever since I was young person. I’ve had a lot of big things happen to me.”

On her unconventional upbringing and what it’s done for her decision-making skills as a mom:
“Absolutely. It’s brought up a tremendous amount of issues, concerns and worries for me, being a mother, and how much that meant to be based on my childhood and what I went through. Wonderful, beautiful things and difficult things. It was always a dream of mine to be a mother. I didn’t ever really dream of being an actress. I used to dream of being a singer, but I always dreamed of being a mother ever since I was young girl.”

On those pesky rumors that she quit acting, or is slowing phasing it out of her life:
“I’ve never really stopped. Even when I was a kid I’d work for a year straight and then I would take a year off. It always felt natural to live my life again and store things up to put in my next performance.”

On her love of collecting photographs on her phone:
“Obsessively, I have thousands of pictures on my phone. Why am I so fascinated with capturing moments? I’ll tell you why. Because I’ve had so much change in my life. My whole life things have constantly changed, so psychologically I’m sure I’m quite sentimental. I want to remember the feeling, not only what it looks like. When it’s happening, it’s so wonderful but I know it’s gonna change or not gonna last. Everything changes so I want to remember it because I feel grateful for it.”

I think it’s sweet that she said she’s “dreamed of being a mother ever since I was young girl” and like that’s what she finds meaning in. Liv’s movie career didn’t quite take off after Lord of The Rings, and that seems apt since I’ve find her acting kind of one dimensional. I like to see her on screen, though, just because she’s so damn likable and gorgeous. Liv will next appear in Robot and Frank, with Frank Langella, James Marsden, Susan Sarandon and Peter Sarsgaard. It’s about an “elderly ex-jewel thief and his new caretaker robot” and premiered at Sundance. In this interview she’s promoting Pantene, though. With gorgeous hair like that she’s an effective spokesperson. She’s probably got some extensions, but her hair doesn’t look all fakey fake like Kate Beckinsale’s.

I’m not sure why I like her, but I do.

I don’t understand why these Hollywood types feel the need to get married and have kids so young. Probably because they feel so “alone” as celebrities or some crap.

I hope her career does well. Does anyone else get the feeling that this girl is super shy and quiet in real life??

    • Flim says:

I don’t think 27 is considered “young” for starting a family in America. It’s pretty typical, if not a shade on the older side.

      • L says:

Exactly. Didn’t she also not get married until after baby? When she was 28?

        That’s not young-that’s normal.

    • HA! says:

That’s why i likle Taylor Swift: she just got a kitty to baby and fill the void Gyllenjerk left…instead of trying to bang-bong random men and getting preggers to fill the void…

  2. Tiegan says:

I love her too. She’s one of the most beautiful actresses of today, and I don’t understand why she’s not in more movies.

  3. brin says:

She is very likeable, down-to-earth and genuine. I’m glad she is still doing films. She seems very selective in her projects and is not a famewhore, so when she is photographed, it’s a pleasure to see her.

  4. Kaboom says:

The Wonderland interview was done by Louise Brealey by the way which most will know as (Cumberbatch’s) Sherlock’s Molly Hooper.

  5. Asli says:

She’s so genuine and not a typical ”Hollywood-starlet”. I see her as a normel person and not some far off/well-kept image. I soooo could be friends with Liv. Rooney Mara? Not so much.

  6. Kaye says:

CB, did you ever see her in “Stealing Beauty”? It was a mid-90s film. She was really good in that.

    • mln76 says:

I LOVE THAT MOVIE! The soundtrack was a classic… I feel bad for Liv I’m pretty sure her bizarre upbringing caused some emotional problems.

  7. TheOriginalVictoria says:

Live Tyler doesn’t need extensions, but it’s kind of hard for me to tell about fake hair when it comes to celebrities cause their stuff super super premium for the most part. Ill refrain.

I’ve loved her since she was in the Aerosmith video (which now that I look back on it was kind of inappropriate, but i still love) with my goddess Alicia Silverstone. i don’t think she’s one dimensional at all, but I can kind of see how she could be mistaken for it,

Loved her in Inventing the Abbotts and Sealing Beauty. Well, I loved her in everything.

  8. Gwen says:

I really like her and I think she’s soooo beautiful <3

  9. Sherri says:

I love this women, it appears she has a kind soul & that this world can be too harsh for her liking . . .

  10. Shaye says:

Royston…why did you ever let her go ?!

  11. Alexis says:

I’ve always liked Liv. Hope everything goes well for her.

  12. Hautie says:

Liv was blessed with gorgeous hair. Thick shiny beautiful hair.

And I seriously doubt, she would willingly let anyone glue fake hair on her natural hair.

Liv has done a lot of small films that I loved. I even loved her in Jersey Girl. Which was a sweet movie. (Even if it got rubbed down in the Bennifer stink.)

And I loved her in “That thing you do!”.

  13. cr says:

OT: Peters Skarsgard. Nope, it’s Peter Sarsgaard.
Back OT: I’m not sure she can really act, but she really does seem like such a sweet person.

  14. Justaposter says:

I was looking on IMDB for a title of hers and didn’t realize she was in so many films!

Have you guys seen her in “One night at McCool’s”? I love this movie!

She was on Jay Leno a few months back and was just adorable! She was talking about Milo and time at Grampa’s house. It was really qute cute.

  15. corny says:

I can see she learned botox too
    poor over privileged child

Just because you grow up with money doesn’t mean you don’t have any problems. There are a lot of things money can’t buy. I figure the whole paternal revelation had to have been difficult even if her relationship with Steven Tyler seems pretty good.

Though I’ve been in love with Liv since I saw Empire Records as a child. And yes to everyone talking about Stealing Beauty! Great movie!

      • corny says:

after a while you have to stop the blaming and get on with what life has dealt you. In her case she had more opportunities than most

  16. Julie says:

She’s one of my favorites. I want to read the whole interview. Thanks for covering.

  17. Lisa says:

She and her dad are so likable. I haven’t seen a lot of her movies, but I still think she’s lovely.

  18. Beregorl says:

I like her sweet voice. I like her great hair and blue eyes. I like her tall body. I like that EVERYTHING is soooo big on her: her eyes, her mouth, her teeth, her hands, her bones. (She even said in a very old interview that “My hands are bigger than most men’s.)

She’s a mediocre actress at best, but she’s absolutely, frickin’ likeable. I have a massive, loyal girlcrush on her (and on Miranda Otto) since LOTR.

  19. joxjooze says:

    love her too!
She is not an amazing actress, but she is not annoying!
    And really exceptionally beautiful!

  20. lovelyliv says:

i love her, she’s so beautiful. is it just me, or does she kinda look like marcia gay harden on the cover photo???

  21. Zoe says:

Really like her. Wish she was in more movies. She always has a calming presence in movies, toned-downed, not over-the-top. Accessibly pretty.

  22. HA! says:

    Liv’s face is…a little too long…

  23. thebl0nde says:

Liv is a truly sweet person. When she was filming “Cookie’s Fortune”, she lived next door to my Mom in the small Southern town where it was being filmed. My Mom, being a nice little Southern lady, would take over cheese biscuits for Liv and friends. One day, Liv saw my Mom in town and came up and gave her a great big hug. I’ve still got the picture!

    • SallyBee says:

I had a friend who worked on this movie with Liv. The way he described her to me was just so perfect- said that she was kind, quiet and sweet, all in a very shy way; not in a celebrity better-than-you nose-stuck-up-in-the-air way. He also said that she is so much more beautiful in person than she is on camera; I attribute that to her serene and calming nature that my friend says she has. He also said that Liv treated everyone with kindness and respect- regardless if you were the guy bringing food to the set or you were one of the other big stars on set. Him telling me that just made me love her even more.

  24. ha says:

Im sure she is nice.. but based on her dating history…. she dates idoits thinking of one in particular totally full of himself and self absorbed.. I think she has definately had some work done on her face… and her sagging jowls are growing by the day… she is probably having some mini-crisis dating a 23 year old…. but all in all who cares about liv tyler?! she isnt a very talented actress she’s just a nice person. She is like a well trained dog.

  25. Niki says:

She purchased some things in a store where I was working in New York, about 10 years ago….She was so kind, humble and…just normal. Calm and beautiful. I like her a lot since then.

  26. LittleDeadGrrl says:

She is so likable I’d love to see her in another movie and see if she’s grown. I like her comment about needing to live her life and then come back to acting, to grow, and bring something to the performance. I’ve not heard that before.

  27. marisa says:

always been a fan of hers. she looks amazing!

  28. annie_grey says:

Always wished Liv would’ve married Joaquin. They were beautiful together.
