Tilda Swinton in demure Celine at the BAFTAs: lovely or not her best look?

These are photos of Tilda Swinton at the BAFTAs last night, where she was nominated for Leading Actress (We Need To Talk About Kevin) and lost to Meryl Streep. Of course, awards aren’t terribly important to Tilda except in terms of gratitude for helping “our little film” gain exposure. Here, Tilda wore a very minimalistic, off-white Celine jumpsuit-type dress and accessorized with a Pomellato cocktail ring. The overall look is somewhat bland and, as such, highly unusual for Tilda, who could’ve at least gone with a slightly bolder makeup look although her hair is appropriate.

Admittedly, I’m sort of bummed about Tilda’s low-key style on the BAFTA red carpet since we won’t be seeing her at the Oscars this year. She looks lovely here but certainly didn’t kill it like she did with that dramatic, ice-blue Haider Ackerman at the Globes. I suppose we should all just be grateful that she’s not wearing a Victoria Beckham. That would truly be cause to complain.

About a week ago, Tilda also tried to rock another white outfit while hosting a MOCA-sponsored opening of Pomellato Boutique in Beverly Hills. She wore a Lanvin Resort ivory silk matching tuxedo jacket and pants, which pretty gave the effect of fancy pajamas. This seems like a cool outfit to wear while getting bombed with Angelina Jolie while hosting a slumber party.

And just for kicks, here’s Tilda in another androgynous Haider Ackermann (who she should almost always wear) look with a smashing red tuxedo jacket and black pants. She was in NYC to appear on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” on 1/26 and stopped to pose with a homeless dude, who may or may not have thought that he was meeting David Bowie.

I absolutely LOVE Tilda! She always has that ‘I’ll-wear-something-to-look-presentable-but-really-don’t-give-a-sh*t-about-my-damn-outfit’ vibe. After watching her on Charlie Rose, I was in love : )

BTW, the comment about the homeless guy thinking he was meeting David Bowie made me shoot coffee out my nose, thanks XD

  6. SG says:

I LOVE the dress and huge ring. The silky pajamas, not so much.

  7. Katie says:

She has looked better, but you can fault her for wearing what she likes and not caring what anyone else thinks. For that, I have great respect for her.

I wonder if her lack of an Oscar nomination this time can be attributed to her publicly saying that winning the supporting actress Oscar didn’t really mean that much to her.

Considering how much campaigning & ass-kissing you have to do to get a nomination, I wouldn’t be surprised if Academy members look harshly on anyone who seems not entirely grateful about having been honored with a win and make a point of snubbing them in the future, regardless of how good their work is.

She definitely campaigned for her first Oscar, so I think she was posturing a bit when she claimed not to care about getting one. Lesson here is that if you’re going to pull a Rooney Mara on the Academy, you should probably wait until you’ve already won the top acting prize.

With her face, body and swang, she can wear the most idiotic thing and still look classy, edgy and above everybody. I love especially when she wears suits, she’s better than 90% of men!

  10. Isadora says:

That homeless guy was on 30 rock!

  11. Asli says:

She looks a little sloppy in the second outfit but I forgive because she’s Tilda.

  12. Amy says:

I like the dress but her hair is awful. It reminds me of Robert Pattinson’s unwashed, unkempt greasy hair look.

I have to say she looks really good in the white dress. I love her hair!

  14. Jules says:

    Love TILDA!!!

    SWINTON!

I like this dress very much, especially how the fabric holds up to all those satin-y ones that look like they need an iron more than to make an appearance on a red carpet.

If you do more BAFTA fashion, you should talk about Kristen Wiig. She was much improved.

I love the first and the third look a lot.But the silk pajamas look a little too casual/sloppy for me. And they wash her out. She is too pale for that look to work. I want the shoes in the third photo. But I will let the little mistakes go because she has had more hits than misses for me.

tilda looked beautiful in the Celine dress – like a calla lily! I think nobody does minimalism as well as she does. I just _wish_, however, that she would go beyond minimalism with her make-up. She always looks so washed out. We get that she doesn’t want to look like a tart, but she has great features and could accentuate her cheeks and eyes with some very subtle colour. (I know you’re not reading this Tilda, but what the hell.)

Loved the comment about the homeless man maybe or maybe not meeting David Bowie! Guffaw!

Since it’s already established that she is LOVED and a Style Goddess, the dress must be discussed. I don’t really care for it on her. The material is so thick, the little cap sleeves are too precious for her and the only detail or color is at the floor. I do love that RING! I also like the Lanvin PJ’s, but a picture from the beginning of the nite would have been better. And I love the plaid tux jacket on her! She does look like the Thin White Duke, so I guess she’s the Thin White Dutchess!

I thought that man was ROBIN WILLIAMS!!!

It is Tilda…she can do no wrong…PERIOD!!!

I’d like to see her play up her eyes, just for the sake of curiosity.

    Her complexion is gorgeous.

  24. Sarah says:

That’s Radioman! He’s apparently in the know about all the TV shows and movies filming in NYC, and even persuaded Tom Hanks to guest star on 30 Rock!

Tilda’s got the right idea with makeup, the lady is in her frigging fifties and still looks fresh. Don’t kick nature in the nuts.

Though I think she can pull off any shade, the red hair makes her eyes pop and since they’re the most otherworldly shade of green they need to be acknowledged.

I’ll never know what people want with her vis-a-vis her wardrobe. She’s not Jackson Montgomery and you’re not Erica Kane, so a person can only stand to get dicked up and down for so long until a renegrade sister-driven bear turns out to be the mildest interaction of your day. And I believe that someone in this universe, Travis lives. I’m not sure about Dixie Lazarus, is she on Walking Dead?

    Travis Lives.
