Liam Hemsworth covers Details, talks Miley’s weed scandal & the ‘Twilight’ effect

Liam Hemsworth covers the March issue of Details to promote his role in the upcoming The Hunger Games movie, which has the potential to catapult him to global superstardom at the age of 22. In other words, Liam will soon no longer be best known as “Miley Cyrus’ boyfriend.” From a gossip perspective, it will be interesting to see whether or not their relationship weathers the storm to come in terms of Liam almost certainly becoming the target of hoards of screaming fans in manner of Robert Pattinson. In the meantime, Liam comes across as entirely protective of Miley during this interview and discusses, among other things, the Bob Marley birthday cake scandal that featured Miley joking on camera about smoking a ton of weed:

On Dating Miley Cyrus: When Liam and Miley hooked up on [The Last Song] set, he was 19, she was 16–a fact he doesn’t shy away from. “What happened happened, and we’ve been together two and a half years. She makes me really happy. When you start, you want to be professional, but when you’re filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you’re not human if you don’t feel something.” When the film wrapped, he went home with her to Nashville, where he was introduced to the joys of Cracker Barrel and Miley’s dad, Billy Ray. “He’s very spiritual. He’s just one of the nicest guys. Very accommodating. I’ve listened to his music since we got together. It’s awesome.” And so is Cracker Barrel. “I’d never heard of country-fried steak before. It’s great! I love fried food.”

On Miley’s Weed Scandal: Liam was there at her 19th-birthday party, which exploded in the tabloids after she joked about her Bob Marley cake and how she “smokes way too much f&*#ing weed” on video. For the first time, Liam is angry. “She’s in a room full of her best friends,” he says, almost breaking a sweat. “And you have one person who comes in there and videos it. The poor girl can’t have one night where she can feel safe in her own world. It’s ridiculous.”

On The Twilight Effect: “I’ve never met [Robert] Pattinson,” Liam says, remarking on the young Hollywood idol in whose footsteps he seems destined to follow. The path is fraught. Sure, there’s the ability to cherry-pick roles and use your name to get a passion project off the ground. But there are also the endless intrusions and the risk of being labeled for life. Liam doesn’t want to talk about the Twilight effect–that The Hunger Games might similarly explode his life and career–or think that he could gain insight from those who’ve come before him. “What do you say to someone? ‘Your life’s gonna change.’ Okay. Thanks. Cool. It is what it is. Whatever. If it happens, there’s nothing you can do.”

On His Hunger Games Role: Liam stars as Gale, a brooding man-child suffering a serious case of heartache when his girl, Katniss, is shipped off to compete in the killer Olympics. It’s Liam–not Jennifer Lawrence–who is this film’s ingenue, a pretty young thing watching the hero do battle. It’s hard to say how much pressure comes with fronting a franchise, especially when it could transform the guy who’s Thor‘s brother and who walks Miley’s dog into Hollywood’s hottest young star. While Liam downplays such expectations, he concedes that he and his Hunger Games character share a certain helplessness. “Gale is someone who wants to stand up to this thing but can’t. He’s pretty powerless.”

[From Details]

In all likelihood, The Hunger Games will be a raging success when it hits theaters on March 23, but I don’t think the fans will be quite as “fanatic” in terms of Team Gale or Team Peeta. Author Suzanne Collins takes great care to paint Katniss as a heroine who doesn’t need to be in a relationship, unlike Bella Swan of the Twilight universe. So maybe Liam can truly use his role in the (presumed) movie trilogy as a springboard and avoid getting pigeonholed as a teen idol like poor Sparklepants has experienced.

As far as this interview goes, it’s such a pity that we couldn’t find out what Liam thought of the p3nis birthday cake that Miley ordered for him. Honestly though, Liam comes across as very wet under the wings but nonetheless as quite a decent guy, not to mention an entirely photogenic one as revealed in the photoshoot:

I love him. I totally think he looks a little like John Krasinski. He’s totally adorable 🙂

Several of my friends, and myself, are HUGE Hunger Games fans, and no, we aren’t really hardcore Team Peeta/Team Gale…of course, we are adults, not teens, so that may have something to do with it. Regardless, I REALLLLY hope this movie does well. I am much more of a fan than I am of Twilight, and I can’t WAIT to find see!

I am curious about this movie too, but I only liked the first Hunger Games book. The second two were just an afterthought and really didn’t add anything to the story. IMO.

      • Samigirl says:

I actually kind of feel the same way. I get why the other 2 are necessary, but the first one is the best, imo.

    • Mary says:

I am a hunger games fan as well but actually think the second one is the best! I truly enjoyed all three and think how each one takes place in a different setting will allow them to be beautifully played out as movies.

      Team Katniss.

  2. atlantapug says:

I foresee his fame outpacing Miley’s and he will leave her in the dust.
She was the more famous one when they got together (ewwww statutory rape), and when they switch roles he will want someone better looking.

  3. Monkey Jim says:

The books are sooo much better than Twilight crapola so it should attract a wider audience than teenage girls & frustrated housewifes IF the movies do it justice. These things are always cyclical hopefully he will be the next big thing & let RPatz have some peace (& us a break from him) – I was disappointed in the actor who was cast as Gale tho (can’t even be bothered to google name) but would be great to be surprised.

  4. Zay says:

I don’t think it will explode Twilight style, mostly cause The hunger games books audience aren’t as juvenile.

  5. Abby says:

So many people I know, people that aren’t even big readers, are loving The Hunger Games. Since the movie is coming out and everyone i know is telling me OMGYOUHAVETOREADTHEM, I’m halfway throughout hr first book and I do like it. I feel like it’s a brutal harry potter and the goblet of fire, without the magic.

Seems like it’ll be a good movie from the previews. I liked Jennifer in Winter’s Bone so I think she’ll do well in this role cause it’s similar.

I can’t believe Laim and Miley have been together for so long!

  6. normades says:

I don’t know anything about Hunger Games but doesn’t he seem miscast as a “brooding man-child”. Shouldn’t he have been Peeta? (again, I haven’t read the books)

I was really meh on Liam before, but now he’s really starting to grow on me 🙂

    • sassenach says:

Yes, he would have been a better Peeta but he is fine as Gale. Josh Hutcherson is completely miscast as Peeta and has no chemistry with Jennifer Lawrence.

    • Zigggy says:

Having read the books, I really like him as Gale. Not 100% on Josh H as Peeta, but from the trailer & photo’s I think he’ll be great. I think they did an awesome job of casting. (not like One for the Money)

  7. Talie says:

I would’ve thought he would go for Jennifer Lawrence, but she’s still with Nic Hoult.

  8. mel says:

I just don’t see him hitting it as big as robert pattinson…I just don’t. I think what happened with Twilight was a once in a million opportunity. Plus – the chemistry between pattinson and stewart was pretty palpable…so we’ll see. Can’t wait for the movie!

  9. T.C. says:

He looks like a MAN. Not sure how the teen audience is going to react. Pattinson has a boyish thing going on. Miley is not going to deal well with him getting more attention than her.

  10. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Love him, so hot and broody. Like that he defends Miley, even when she’s being an ass. Agree it will be interesting to see how they play out after this role really comes to life.

  11. skipper says:

he seems to have had a good effect on miley. I hope they stay together.

like that would ever really happen.

  12. Rook says:

Suzanne Collins also took great care in totally ripping off a Japanese story.

  13. operagirl says:

All I can say is, the Hemsworth men are quite fine specimens, and I can’t help but wonder at the genetics that put them together. I keep wondering what their parents look like. Is that odd? hahaha

    • jamie says:

Yep, I wonder about where these brothers come from too.

    • Kara Ann says:

I agree that both Hemsworths are attractive. I especially like that they have a rugged attractiveness as opposed to, say, Robert Pattinson.

I really find the care and protectiveness that he shows towards Miley and their relationship a very attractive quality. Hopefully, even if his fame outpaces hers and they don’t last, he’ll show the same grace in interviews about her then. Nothing is quite so attractive as a good, strong character. Seriously.

  14. lila says:

I actually would have preferred to see him cast as Peeta. Hopefully the movie will change my mind, but at the moment I’m none too happy with the casting of Peeta. Ultimately though, as long as katniss is well cast, I’m okay with the guys. I really like how she has an actual personality as opposed to Bella, who bores the heck out of me.

  15. kimberly says:

I’ve only read the first book, couldn’t get into the 2nd, so I never picked up the third.

Wondering if they changed the book to give Miley’s bf a bigger role in the movie like they did for those twilight movies.

  16. NM6804 says:

“When you start, you want to be professional, but when you’re filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you’re not human if you don’t feel something.”

You can still be human without falling in love, it’s called acting, pretending! You can be friends or not but you don’t have to become lovers. Other than that, good interview.

  17. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Anyone seen him act in anything? Is he any good?

  18. woopidoo says:

He’s hot! i would feel safe with that kind of guy, miley is very lucky
