95 year-old NY fashion icon Zelda Kaplan dies in the front row at fashion week

Last month, there was a really nice segment on the Today Show celebrating older stylish women. It was part of a promotion of a new documentary by a guy named Ari Seth Cohen who runs the wonderful blog Advanced Style. Ari photographs women he meets on the street, asks them about their personal sense of style and strikes up friendships with many of them. The women he profiles are often well into their 80s and 90s and he even has a couple centenarians among them.

One of the women profiled on Ari’s blog was a fabulous 95 year-old woman named Zelda Kaplan. He posted a video interview with Zelda, below, in which she said the secret to keeping young and feeling good was being “healthy and… interested in world affairs.” Zelda said she dresses up everyday and that she “has a beautiful wardrobe I’ve chosen myself.” She mentions that she buys her cloth for her handmade outfits “from the weaver.”

Sadly Zelda passed away at fashion week during a show, while she was sitting in the front row. The NY Post carried this news, along with some details about how well she lived and celebrated life up until the end.

Beloved club and fashion maven Zelda Kaplan died after collapsing in the front row at Fashion Week yesterday at age 95.

Kaplan, New York’s oldest and most beloved night owl and the woman who could famously “out-party even Paris Hilton,” collapsed at the Joanna Mastroianni show at The Studio at Lincoln Center.

Witnesses said the socialite “slumped forward” as the second model came out on the runway, and she was carried out and given CPR by paramedics. An ambulance rushed her to the hospital, but she couldn’t be revived.

Her death left attendees devastated. One told us, “Zelda passed away, right there, in the front row. Security carried her out, but the show just carried on. Everybody is distraught.”

A statement released by her friends yesterday read, “Zelda Kaplan passed away suddenly today at the age of 95 from natural causes . . . She will be deeply missed and always loved.”
Zelda, famed for her African outfits, dramatic hats and large sunglasses, was a club fixture right up to her death. She was at the opening of new XL last month, where she was photographed with Lance Bass and designer/stylist Indashio. Her close friends include fashion exec Keri Ingvarsson, stylist Mia Morgan, artist Andres Serrano and Richie Rich.

After moving here from New Jersey in the 1960s, Zelda became a party and fashion-world fixture, but also made regular visits to Africa to work on human rights issues.
She told The Post in 2010, “I wish more people would have [clothes] made for them. But so many Americans want to look like everybody else . . . I hate to wear what everybody else is wearing . . . I don’t think people should be happy to be a clone.”

Richie Rich told us, “Passing away in the front row was how it was meant to be. Zelda loves fashion, so she died for fashion. She would have wanted to go out in style. Zelda always said, ‘Live, live, live and have fun’ . . . I hope the angels are holding her right now.”

[From The NY Post]

It’s kind of bittersweet and sad yet heartwarming at the same time. She died doing what she loved.

    • Elizabeth says:

ITA – what a great exit to follow what must have been so many great entrances! I love it.

    • Capella says:

Some men dream of dying while having sex, some women dream of dying while orgasming on amazing clothes.

I truly admire her guts for living her life to the fullest, at such an advanced age!

And that is how I want to go too: but surrounded by shoes… With Ewan McGregor putting them on my feet. Not asking much, am I?

  3. Franny says:

I LOVE advanced style! I just discovered it a few weeks ago, and its in my rotation of many fashion blogs that I look at just because they are so awesome!

  4. Delta Juliet says:

    Those hats are something!

  5. Darlene says:

these women are fabulous. i wish they would be featured more in the media. very uplifting to watch.

that is how i would like to leave this earth…front row of a fashion show. perfect.

    • Deb says:

Agreed. My mother is in her late 50s and says she sometimes feels at a loss about how to dress and do makeup, because so much attention is given to marketing to the young.

      RIP Zelda.

  13. wunder says:

Fantastic! I want to know more about these older fashionistas.

  14. Jessica says:

Aww… God bless her soul and family.

  15. Asli says:

Whoa. They show went on? Whoa.

She seemed very nice. Rest in peace and condolences to her family.

    • Capella says:

No worries Asli. It wasn’t truly insensitive, for usually a fashion show is less than 30 minutes. So after Zelda “fainted”, security got her out so emergency can work on her… By the time she was pronounced dead, the show would have been long done.

Just wanted to reassure your kind heart, that no insensitive jerkiness was done to lovely Zelda. May she RIP.

  16. Lantana says:

I love this story! And I love that she dressed up simply because she loved to dress up! Bully for her! Makes me want to gussy up and head to Wally-world lol.

  17. brin says:

    A true fashionista, God bless!

  18. huhsaywhat? says:

RIP Zelda!! NYC will miss you.

  19. MJ says:

What a cool lady. Not a bad way to go for someone who loved fashion so much – quick, painless, and the centre of attention! Rest in peace, Zelda.

  20. monette says:

    Madonna, is that you?

    • Booboocita says:

No, but I’d bet this is how Madonna hopes to go out … front row at some event, dressed to thrill, with some hot boy at her side, adoring (or at least being paid to look adoring).

Won’t happen. True fashion originals are rare. Godspeed, Zelda.

  21. Euphorima says:

Love the zest she had for life…..she sure loves red and black combos though.

  22. Miffits says:

Now THAT’S how you make an exit. RIP Zelda, as awesome leaving this life as you were living it.

    • Lee says:

Seriously. Reading this piece, it sounds like she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. What an amazing lady. I hope I have that much zest for life and personality when I’m even half her age.

  23. QQ says:

Gaahh how freaking cute and adorable wa she?

  24. Lane's Mom says:

What a cool woman, and what a great way to go!

  25. Ruth says:

RIP- amazing lady- Human rights, intelligence, enjoyment and beautiful clothes. Doing it right all the way to the end.

  26. Natasha says:

What an inspiring and lovely woman – I feel better just watching her on that video. 🙂

  27. Jenna says:

She really was an amazing gal – reminds me of some of the older women in my family (which gives ME hope I’ll be horrifying and embarrassing my more uptight family members when I’m in my 90’s as well!).

One tiny correction for the article though – the 2nd vid? She IS included in the intro.

Beyond that – Party on Zelda, and may you meet up with my aunt Grace and have a grand ol’ time playing with her wigs.

  28. Rita says:

Great thread. Beats the hell out of languishing in an old folks home. Raise my glass, curtsy to, and tip my hat to Zelda. Party on hun. RIP (Revel In Parties).

  29. bluhare says:

That’s how I want to go. 95, still in good shape physically and mentally, and doing something I like doing. Good for you, Zelda.

  30. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

“Richie Rich told us, “Passing away in the front row was how it was meant to be. Zelda loves fashion, so she died for fashion. She would have wanted to go out in style.”

    This. What a great story.

  31. ann says:

What a regal looking woman. Love her style and confidence.

  32. the original bellaluna says:

Agree that this was probably her ideal way to go, in the front row at Fashion Week.

    RIP, Dame Zelda.

  33. Ron says:

This is truly the best exit I have seen in years.

  34. poppy says:

    true inspiration

  35. jwoolman says:

Great exit. Also she was right about clothes- they should be made for the person (style and fit) instead of trying to deal with clone clothes. The pictures show she knew exactly what looked right on her.

  36. Lisa says:

Incredible. To die with all of your mental and physical faculties more than intact at 95 is one thing, but to do it at a fashion show? We should all hope to be so fabulous.
