Scarlett Johansson: “Every woman has body worries. I’m not exempt from that”

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson may officially be off her strict diet for The Avengers (and therefore be tucking into countless buffalo wings at this very moment), but she has stepped forward to discuss how she certainly has body image issues like nearly every other female in existence. While she’s never really had to worry about her rack, which jiggles in such a way that it probably got her the Black Widow role, Scarlett has a much closer-to-average bikini body than most other starlets currently working in Hollywood. And I personally think Scarlett has a fantastic body (as do many other people), but she frets over it just the same. At the same time, she doesn’t seem to obsess over it and stresses that a large part of her Avengers training was not merely to look good but to be able to handle the physical nature of the role:

Reprising her role as the butt-kicking Black Widow in The Avengers, Scarlett Johansson had her own butt to worry about. Namely, how it looked in her skin-tight, curve-hugging costume.

“First of all, every woman has body worries. I’m not exempt from that,” she tells ITV1’s Daybreak morning show in the U.K. on Tuesday.

“But beyond part of the by-product of spending that much time in the gym is that you can fit into a cat suit.”

But those workouts weren’t all about her hot bod. Johansson, 27, who’s promoting the latest installment of the superhero franchise, in theaters May 4, says she performed her own stunts in the movie as she worked with stunt-double Heidi Moneymaker, which was “a lot of training and dedication.”

“It hurts and it hurts and then suddenly it doesn’t hurt,” she says. “And you’re getting it right, and it’s a great moment — you feel like you’ve accomplished something big.”

Next up: The actress, whose relationship with New York-based advertising executive Nate Naylor was revealed in January, might just make her way from the gym to the recording studio again.

“I would love to,” says Johansson of a potential music-career resurrection, four years after releasing her debut album. “Releasing an album is like a little baby, and you just have to nourish it and you need time for it.”

Okay, so a lot of people (myself included) have giggled quite a bit over Scarlett’s monotone execution of most of her roles, but I can’t deny that she handles the physicality of the Black Widow role (plus the jiggle) in a competent manner. Certainly, she worked hard to train for this movie and is proud of the payoff, but I really do hope that she’s serious about not returning to the recording studio any time soon. Now that would be a mistake. Also, the stuntwoman’s name is really Heidi Moneymaker? Awesome.

She was interviewed on the red carpet at a premier and actually had the good grace to name-check her stunt double, unlike all the actors who claim to do everything themselves. I’m warming to her.

Oh, and not EVERY woman has body worries – there’s always that one chicha at every club who looks like a 10lb sack of potatoes in a 5lb bag, but don’t give no flying f***!

“Not EVERY woman has body worries”

Ha, you are so right! 😉

Scarlett just seems more likeable recently. Wonder if she’s honest or faking it.

I’m a 40 yr old who recently returned to college and I am shocked by all the overweight girls who wear skin-tight clothes and belly shirts. On the one hand, I envy that kind of body confidence, but then again…I don’t want to see your naked rolls of flesh.

      • Lisa says:

it’s astonishing that so many girls my age are that big at such a young age. Prevention, ladies, prevention!

    • TropicBounce says:

You should see the girls in Latin countries/areas. I was in Puerto Rico and the girls there never shied away from wearing something flashy and revealing, even with a beer gut. It’s just a different culture. I don’t have an aversion to seeing the bellies though; it’s just fat, it’s not like it’s toxic bodily waste or anything.

I actually found it inspiring, like it really doesn’t matter what you look like. Self-esteem is a mental process that has very little to do with objectivity.

      • kris says:

Thats really inspiring and everything but encouraging and enabling an unhealthy life style is dangerous. The issue isn’t with seeing their fat rolls, its whats going on inside thats going to make them have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. And how much is it going to cost me in taxes to support all of these people when they go to the ER at 35 with a heart attack and are in need of a quadruple bypass. Ya – they are comfortable in their skin, they shouldn’t be. Thats not self esteem, thats suicidal.

I’m anxiously waiting to finally watch The Avengers — 51 hours to go for me (already bought my ticket).

    • ThirdChris says:

Jealous!! I spent a good half hour last night watching clips and trailers for it on Hulu+. Can’t wait to see it.

    • Tiffany27 says:

51 hours!!! I have to wait until May 3 midnight show 🙁

      • Eve says:

I bought the ticket to Friday’s first screening (at midday) — there was a 23:55 screening (on April 26th) but I was unaware of that…or maybe it was already sold out.

    • Tiffany27 says:

You gotta let me know how it is, even though its getting really good reviews and is in the 90s on rotten tomatoes. I don’t always trust critics lol

      • Incredulous says:

I’ve seen it. It gets a bit Joss Whedon glib in places but it is funny, every one gets a moment or two and a scene to strut their acting (except Cobie Smulders and maybe Jeremy Renner) and they get Hulk right.

        Mostly, you will laugh.

      • Court says:

It came out yesterday in Australia, it was brilliant! It didn’t drag on and some parts were absolutely hysterical. Definitely going to see it again.

      • Eve says:

        @ Tiffany27:

I will — I mean, if you manage to get anything intelligible from the “squeeeeeees” and “ZOMG!!!!!1s” that is going to be my review.

  3. Esmom says:

Wow, she looks fantastic as a redhead.

  4. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Maybe she is starting to mature a little bit. I like this down-to-earth side of her.

  5. Bodhi says:

I’ve always thought that she is absolutely stunning

  6. Lila says:

Its refreshing to hear. Given her size, I’m sure a few extra pounds show up rather quickly. But man would I kill for her curves

  7. wonderwoman21 says:

Why would she be exempt? Her body isn’t that great and neither is her face. The best she ever looks is when she is photoshopped into what she’s portrayed to look like. They give her more curves than she really has & make her bulbous nose into a tiny pointed Marilyn Monroe nose.

  8. Allons - y Allonso says:

you can’t polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter

  9. Julia says:

Some women have more body issues because society like to say “This si what Latinas look like (Sofia Vergara)” or “This is what women should be(Grace Kelly or Liz Taylor)” so ya they dont stack up and feel bad. No one holds men to a physical standard where they start losing jobs and dating mates from it. Im a 4 11 inch Brazilian and in both countries I have been treated badly and lost jobs and potential partners cus of my height/petiteness or lack of looks or in other words being normal, which nowadays isnt good enough
