Baz Luhrmann’s acid-trip trailer for ‘The Great Gatsby’ released: awful or interesting?

For whatever reason, my expectations for Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby were quite different than the realities presented in this new trailer, the first for the film. I guess I thought Baz’s acid-trip-style had mellowed with age and that this was going to be an impeccable costume drama, authentic in every way. But… from the first few seconds of the trailer, I was instantly reminded of the party scene in Romeo + Juliet, and how much Baz Luhrmann likes to churn up the psychodrama of a party scene. In the end… I’m kind of disappointed.

Some nice things: the scene with all of Gatsby’s shirts – that looks like it’s done really, really well. It was always my favorite bittersweet scene in the book, and I love the look of Gatsby’s two-story closet. I guess I should say something about the actors? Carey Mulligan is such a fine actress. She’s one of my favorites of the new girls, and I think she was a splendid choice for Daisy, and maybe one of the best actresses to portray the Daisy character ever. It seems a bit like she’s in another movie, though – like she thought she was making a more sedate, period, costume drama.

As for Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby… um, he looks really good. I don’t see any bloated face, and he manages to avoid looking ratty too. Probably because Leo as Gatsby is kind of perfect casting too – who else could really play Gatsby amongst today’s actors? Only Leo, really. I didn’t catch sight of Isla Fisher at all, right? She’s not in the trailer? She plays Myrtle. Joel Edgerton plays Tom Buchanan, and Elizabeth Debicki is Jordan Baker (incidentally, when I first read the book, I thought “Jordan Baker” was THE most sophisticated name for a woman ever).

Anyway… it looks okay. I do want to see it, but I think I need to lower my expectations a bit.

    Ew WTH was that ?

    • ol cranky says:

typical Lurhmann over-earnest, overly slick shite

some things do not need the moulin rouge MTV music video approach and this is one of them

  2. the original bellaluna says:

I think 3D is totally unnecessary for this movie. But DiCatchaHo does tend to do well in period pieces.

The trailer is…unappealing, at best. A trailer shouldn’t make you say “WTF?” it should make you want to actually go see the movie.

    • helvetica says:

Haha, almost all people in gossip site start calling him DiCatchAHo, thanks to MK i guess. LOL

Leo seriously need to stop doing serious film, he’s desperately gunning for Oscar and it’s really showing. I’m not sure why Tobey in it, never find him appealing. But hey nepotism works everywhere

      • Rose says:

I think I read (on here?) that Tobey has some massive gambling problem that has got him into all sort of debt, hence why he’s appearing in ad campaigns and films again.

I’ll give the film a go but pretend I haven’t seen the original which is incomparable. It dosen’t do Leo any favours that Robert Redford was a stone cold fox back in the day either but I love Carey.

      • gigi says:

I vaguely remember reading an article or interview transcript once where he said something like he only wanted to do films that were Oscar-worthy. Can’t blame a guy for aiming high but he’s really starting to come off as one-dimensionally serious and kind of full of himself.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Each Oscar bid is clammier than the one that preceded it, it’s literally all over him. And I thought he was just stewing in his own manly essences on account of not having bathed since 1999.

This book again. You know what we should do? We should make a film based on Pride & Prejudice, or, oooh, oooh, Jane Eyre. What about Romeo and Juliet, has anyone done that, yet?

Summer 2014: Go, Dog, Go, The Movie. Screenplay by Edward Albee and David Mamet.

    • asiont says:

agree. this trailer makes me miss the version with robert redford

    • curegirl0421 says:

      I totally agree… 3D? Really?

      • Tiffany says:

I have been to some seminars on 3D, and it actually is a great tool for character based movies. The public doesn’t quite understand it yet, but when you do drama in 3D, it gives the audience a feeling of really being in the room with people dealing with their emotions. It can be incredibly affective, even more so than for action films, but I think it will take experiencing it for people to fully understand.

      • ZenB!tch says:

@Tiffany but will they pay? I only pay for Pixar and *some* action movies. Only *some*

      • the original bellaluna says:

@ Tiffany – I get that, but all 3-D gives me is motion sickness & hubs a migraine. Either way, we don’t go to the theatre to see 3-D movies. We wait until they’re on on of our pay cable channels (even then, I can tell which movies were done in 3-D) and save my stomach, his head, and money.

  3. Jenna says:

I had no expectations for the movie, even though this is one of my favorite books, but in the end I was actually surprised. Definitely want to see this movie. 🙂

    • Selena Castle says:

I agree! I loved the book, thought the film with Redford was OK, but thought there was just not enough CRAZY in it. When you know a little about Zelda and her connection with the book you just want a little more crazy. I sincerely hope that Baz gives us this. I am looking forward to it.

  4. BB says:

Never Dicaprio will win an Oscar with this thing especially in front of Joaquin Phoenix. The special effects are very good he looks thin.

  5. katie says:

Carrie Mulligan looks kind of dead eyed to me. I agree with your assessment that she looks like she’s in a different movie than everyone else.
Overall, I think it has the same out of time feel that Romeo and Juliet had. You know it’s supposed to be set in a different time but it feels modern all the same. I’ll go see it because I loved Romeo and Juliet, and I actually like Baz Luhrmann. And, I am a sucker for the 1920s.

  6. eva, UK says:

I think Romeo and Juliet was an absolute masterpiece, and I was definitely reminded of it in this trailer, so I have high hopes!

    • gigi says:

Romeo+Juliet is one of my favorite movies of all time. But after that and Moulin Rouge, I was really hoping Baz would take a slightly different approach to this story. It looks too familiar, I guess? It’s almost like you can interchange the party scenes from the 3 movies.

    • Heebeegeebee says:

      ^ THIS ^

    • Irishae says:

Baz is 2-1 for me: I also loved Romeo + Juliet and especially Moulin Rouge, but Australia was just…*shivers*. I hope this will be great, so to speak, but I won’t be devastated if it sucks (unlike Prometheus, it is too big to fail! Right? Right??)

  7. brin says:

It’s such a great story on it’s own, he doesn’t need to “Baz” it up. Leo and Carey look great, I still think it will be worth seeing.

  8. Zelda says:

This movie would be practically perfect to me if they had cast Sienna Miller instead of Mulligan. Like her or not, she’d have been a perfect Daisy.

    • Call Me Al says:

I agree. She could totally pull off the fashions. She just has that look of a girl/woman who could make a man pine over her for years. Oh, well.

    • blah says:

While I agree that actors don’t have to match the physical descriptions of their characters, Sienna is way too busted to play a beauty. Plain at best.

    • Cait says:

Agreed! I’ve always thought SM was underrated, she was very good in ‘Factory Girl’. And she wears clothes well. Carey is just so blah to me.

      • Zelda says:

Blah and simpy. Daisy needs to have a dark streak in her. Also, Mulligan does not seem old enough to have even known these people for years.

And I also disagree that Miller looks busted. She looks her age…

      • OlsenTriplet says:

Yeah. Daisy is both selfish and self-destructive. I’m not sure we’re going to see that from Carey Mulligan.

      • Fleur says:

agreed! I have thought Sienna Miller was way under-rated as an actress for SO long. I was *not* expecting to think of her as a good actress—quite the opposite. But she really impressed me in Casanova (not a hint of the blonde bombshell there) and even moreso in the Edge of Love. I thought she out-acted Keira Knightley.I think it’s sad her personal life overshadows her work when a man with an equally unconventional romantic life (ahem. Dicaprio. Clooney.) can be considered one of the best actors around. BOOH for double standards!

      • bns says:

Ia with this whole comment. Especially the part about Carey. I don’t get the fascination.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

True. I don’t want to see her make out with her babysitter. ‘If I play it slow and mournful, it’ll seem deep, introspective and world weary’. Yeah, okay.

      • the original bellaluna says:

I could see Sienna in this part, but she’s pregnant. (I don’t know how long ago this was filmed, though, or if she was doing anything else.)

    • Bodhi says:

No. Forever no. SM is a terrible actress & would have turned the movie into the Sienna show.

If you don’t like Carrie as Daisy, just think: it could have been Blake Lively

  9. Ainsley says:

I like Luhrmann’s trippiness so I’ll have to see this! Plus, Leo might be the only guy in the world who looks hot in a cream/white suit. Grrrrr….

    • Nessa says:

Yeah, Leo looks pretty hot in the Gatsby costumes. Very nice!

    • blah says:

whoops wrong comment I was responding to haha

    • mandyfan says:

I think…I don’t know what it is, but he was pretty damn hot in this trailer. And I say that as a woman who has never found him attractive.

  10. lower-case deb says:

when i read great gatsby, i alternated between ewan mcgregor or matt damon for gatsby. for some reason. even though they don’t necessarily have that Twenties face.also wondering, can jude law?

whatever it is though, there’s really no mistaking this for a baz movie. it drips baz and bleeds luhrmann.

i guess it needs a strong actor to rise above all the luhrmanness, and not get drowned in it instead.

    • layla says:

Can you imagine JUDE LAW as Gatsby and SIENNA MILLER as Daisy.

Now THAT would have been inspired casting!!!! 😉

    • Nakli says:

I thought of Ewan Mcgregor too! I am meh about Leo as Gatsby. His expressions look the same as they were in Shutter Island. He needs to take a break from dramas.

    • MsJAPrufrock says:

Tom Hiddleston was great as F. Scott Fitzerald in Midnight in Paris, and could be a great Gatsby?

  11. Sam says:

Oh my. Leo looks amazing in this trailer. Did they digitally remove his carb face or something? I love Leo anyway, but when did he last look this good? Anyway, I guess it’ll be interesting to see a Luhrmann-style interpretation of the novel? Ah, I don’t really care. I love the book and as someone else said, it doesn’t really need anything adding to it. But maybe this will draw in more 2012 audiences?

  12. Gossip Hound says:

I am saying WTF. What is this? I guess it’s very Baz Luhrman. Hate hate hate the music used in the trailer. Joaquin would have been a much better Gatsby because he has that natural moodiness about him. Leo looks good though.
I am loving Carey Mulligan’s head pieces and head scarves! I see a 1920’s fashion revival coming.

    • DreamyK says:

It looks very. Um. Overwrought. I haven’t read the book so maybe the book is overwrought, too. The trailer didn’t make me want to see this movie.

      • sputnik says:

overwrought was exactly what i thought when i saw the trailer. the book definitely is not.

  13. LittleDeadGirl says:

I was totally left with a “wtf” feeling too after the trailer. I hated the stupid music but I wasn’t the biggest fan of Romeo and Juliet so I think I’m just not into the whole period piece with modern twist thing.

  14. Maya says:

It doesn’t look great, but imagine how much worse it would have been if Blake Lively had been cast. I’m glad they went with Carey instead.

    • blah says:

Gross why was that butterface even in the running?

There’s no actress who could even remotely pull off Daisy in terms of looks (MAYBE Keira Knightly) so I too am glad they went with talent instead of vague physical resemblance.

  15. merski says:

    That was… awful. :/

  16. Kaboom says:

Looks like a favorite for the art direction Oscar.

  17. blah says:

Whatevs. This looks a lot more interesting than the boringo superhero prequel/sequel crud Hollywood is shitting out. Even if it’s terrible I’ll love it.

  18. Lindy says:

I don’t know… I think maybe this version could really freshen up a story and characters that everyone feels they already know? I’ll definitely go see it. Maybe I’m not as stressed b/c Gatsby is not my favorite of Fitzgerald’s novels (if Luhrmann were screwing up Tender is the Night, now that might be a different story!!)

  19. Neelyo says:

Tobey Maguire’s narration is not helping. DiCaprio looks too old but still sounds like a boy. I like Mulligan’s vocal choice for Daisy. Isla Fisher has two or three seconds at the end. Blink and you miss her. The actress playing Jordan Baker looks the most interesting to me.

  20. serena says:

It seems good but not great.
Of course the ones who have read the book will be disappointed (I am).

    Didn’t Daisy have red hair?
I kind of like Leo and Toby for their roles but Carey…I like her, but I don’t think she is suitable for the part.

    And they totally glamourized it.
    Sigh.

    • blah says:

Daisy had dark hair and Jordan was blonde. This version reverses it.

    • Kennedy says:

@blah- Actually, no. If you have read the novel, you would know that Daisy is described as having both dark and blonde hair so the general consensus is that she’s somewhere between blonde and brunette… most likely a dirty blonde. Daisy was based off of Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, who was a brunette so a lot of people think she was meant to be a brunette. There is a passage early in the novel where Daisy compares her own hair to her daughter’s “yellowy hair”
but then there is another sentence (which happens to be one of my favorites from the novel)- “[Gatsby] kissed her dark shining hair..”- so short answer: it’s debatable.

Another thing- the trailer is lovely and I think Edgerton, DiCaprio, and Mulligan will really give it their all. Nick is a bland character so Tobey seems fine for the part. I’m all for this film and it’s my most anticipated right after TDKR. Haters… go be “serious cinephiles” somewhere else.

      • blah says:

I have read the novel. I surmised Daisy was being facetious when she compared her hair to her daughters’. What made me think her hair was dark was a scene where her hair looks like a dash of blue paint on her cheek. (blue black). Maybe F Scott didn’t know either.

      • ViktoryGin says:

Can’t agree with you about Nick. He is supposed to act as the novel’s moral compass, so he intentionally doesn’t possess the mythic quality had by Gatsby. This makes him evolved not boring.

  21. Gia says:

I just can’t with Leo. His performances are always soooooo over the top and try hard. He needs to reel it in a bit. That Oscar carrot is forever dangling in front of him and it’s all I can see in his eyes, ‘will this be it? Will I finally get it? Am I acting enough?? ‘ ugh…

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Hm. Maybe they should toss him one, it was the only thing got Kate frigging Winslet to shut up.

  22. cupidtyrox says:

Leo DiCRAPrio belongs to the Tom Cruise school of try hardness & ruins every movie he’s in. The End

  23. lamamu says:

Fitzgerald would be on board with this adaptation, based on the trailer. The book is all about the excess of the era and its pitfalls. Can’t. Wait.

  24. Jackie says:

very disappointing, and i was really looking forward to it.

leo is playing it just like he played hoover and hughes.

going to be hard to beat the version with mira sorvino…the perfect daisy.

    lame music.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I still haven’t forgiven her for her brazen June Holiday ripoff routine in Mighty Aphrodite. You watch Born Yesterday and tell me why they even let Paul’s kid stand in front of camera. Even Beyonce would say, ‘Look, it ends here This is just too much bastardization for one meal’ in response to the theft.

      • ahoyhoy says:

This whole time I’D been thinking Mira did a very poor imitation of Jennifer Tilly in “Bullets Over Broadway.” I saw both in the theater, and I believe “BoB” came out just A year or two before “MA”. Seeing Sorvino play dumb after Jennifer had so recently done it so well was a huge disappointment.

Jennifer Tilly was hilarious and totally deserved an Oscar nomination for her role…but lost. Sorvino comes along, does a half-assed version and wins!?!!

I will have to bite the bullet and watch “Born Yesterday” whenever it’s on. I just keep hearing about that movie. I’ll be interested to see shades of Mira, lol.

  25. cupidtyrox says:

I just saw your comment after I posted mine. Friends?

  26. Lairen says:

Good old crazy Baz! Apparently the consensus is negative here in the comments, but I’m looking forward to this film. The trailer intrigued me. I love Baz and his over-the-topness.

  27. Adrien says:

My problem with Baz is that the music he chooses seemed incongruous to the feel of the movie. The Art Deco design and costumes were impressive, then you hear Kanye’s song. Kinda throws you off a bit. That’s the jazz age.
Modern music can work in a period piece. Sofia Coppola had proven that.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

If the sonic abortion that was ‘Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) didn’t prove it, something else will.

      Sheesh, I don’t like anybody today :p

      • ahoyhoy says:

I don’t know what you like exactly, but I know I can’t stand much modern music either, except Ben Folds. I always recommend Ben Folds to those, like me, who appreciate pop songs by a person who can really fully compose them.

I won’t post a link here, but on You Tube are pretty good examples:

        “Smoke”
        “Still Fighting It”
“Learn to Live with What You Are”
        “Philosophy”
        “Landed”
He has many rabid fans, but he’s not really played on kiddy radio.

If anybody actually watches a Ben Folds video from me posting this, I’d be so thrilled. His quality over the years just gets better.
        Thanks for reading. Sorry O/T.

  28. lil ole me says:

I don’t know who Carrie Mulligan slept with to get roles, but she must be a good lay. For some reason I have a strong aversion to her and I won’t see anything she is in. Incredibly BORING, and stale performances

    • hmmm says:

      I couldn`t agree more!

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I wish I didn’t agree because there’s really nothing about her that offends. Decent resume, seemingly level-headed, tries different types of things. I can think of scores of starlets who should take her approach, so I’ll accept I’m needlessly pissy for no real reason about this girl. Sigh, the trailer confirmed that I just don’t care qbout this girl at all. Oh well, can’t love everyone.

      • ZenB!tch says:

I just hate her hair. I’ve never heard the girl speak until today. Alas, my aversion to Baz will keep me from seeing this at least until it’s on free TV. I still have a headache from Moulin Rouge – although the Great Gatsby does have to make sense, right?

  29. Rhiley says:

You know Amanda Seyfried probably thinks that she is Daisy. I bet she loses out fairly often to Carey Mulligan.

    • Amelia says:

thank God 0_o I can’t say I’m a huge fan of either of theirs, but Mulligan is by far the superior actress.

      • ZenB!tch says:

Amanda Seyfried bugs me. I don’t know why. I get the feeling she thinks she is all that. It’s not a loathing like I have for some people, just a bug.

    • Angie says:

Amanda Seyfried actually said she lost roles to carey mulligan (and emma watson). She also auditionned for Daisy (Leo produced her terrible movie little red riding hood).

  30. fabgrrl says:

Oh wow! I want to see that movie!

  31. Happymom says:

I loved Moulin Rouge-but I just think the same treatment with Great Gatsby is so cartoony. And I think Leo DiCaprio is a very good actor-but good lord: overact much?? I’m sure I’ll see it, because it’s a spectacle-but I think F. Scott Fitzgerald is looking down going: WTF??!!

  32. Sarah says:

Err what’s Amitabh Bachchan doing in there?

  33. hmmm says:

I`m disappointed as well. The only thing that can save this movie is Leo looking hot.
I couldn`t agree more. It seems like Mulligan is in a completely different movie. She is a great choice for Daisy and Leo is the perfect Gatsby but together they are a mismatch. No chemistry.
Avatar looks more realistic than the New York skyline or that yellow car racing down the street.
And what`s with Jay-Z and Kanye West for the music?

  34. Gossip Hound says:

I really like Carey Mulligan, but I think she may be miscast here. She comes off a little too young and innocent. Daisy needs to be played by someone who projects a little mystery. Leo doesn’t have chemistry with ANYONE! Ever. I hated Titanic. I didn’t buy the relationship between Leo and Kate Winslet (whatever their character names were, I don’t know). I can’t think of any on screen relationship between him and any leading lady that rang true. I think the use of current hip hop underestimates the audience’s intelligence. I know BL isn’t going for Masterpiece Theater here, but using hip hop to draw people into a period piece assumes the audience is a bunch of shallow idiots. Could have been done better–a la Sophia Coppola as someone else mentioned.

    • ZenB!tch says:

I hated Titanic too… I always like to give a shout out to my fellow haters.

I only like Leo in non-romantic roles. I liked him in Shutter Island and Inception and some other random movies I’ve seen with him but if it’s an actual romance – no thanks.

  35. Nance says:

I hope the rest of soundtrack is not as shitty…

    • ZenB!tch says:

It has post 1990 U2 in it. Nothing can be shittier. I almost couldn’t get past the horrid song to see the horrid Bazness. Sorry, Leo you will not be meeting Oscar again.

      Sighed,

      Former U2 fanatic.

  36. Insertrandomname says:

love the trailer. ill definitely see this as soon as it gets out! Leo looks great!

Im guessing Daisy Buchanan is supposed to be a real beauty though and i just don’t see that with Mulligan. She can be pretty but i wouldnt notice her like walking past her in the street.

  37. taylor says:

I’m most puzzled by the poster saying, “Based OFF the beloved novel…” What’s up with that? Is it a way of telling movie-goers that they’ve taken extreme liberties with the story? (Which is not to say they can’t. I’m a HUGE reader and I almost always prefer books to movies, but I’m okay with adaptations and changes as long as they make sense and are self-consistent.) Anyway, the trailer looks…fine. I guess. I won’t see the movie, but then it’s not my favorite story anyway. I’m just not a big Fitzgerald fan.

  38. Heebeegeebee says:

A period drama should be in order, however Luhrman’s saturated, melodramatic approach will be very effective. Also I have never wanted a movie poster as much as I want the one above!

  39. dorothy says:

Don’t like how they strayed so far from the original movie.

    • Naomi says:

Which ‘original movie’ is that? The 1926, 1949, 1974 or the 2000 version? You are aware that the ‘original’ source material is the book?

      • dorothy says:

Oops, sorry. I was referring to the Redford version. Yes, I have read the book.

  40. L says:

At least the youth of today can be just as led astray by his rendition of a seminal classic like some of us were with romeo and juliet… i thought for sure shakespeare was writing about gang warfare in rio… Yea…I was 15 give me a break. Other thoughts.

    1) Robert Redford is Gatsby. Full stop
    2) why the heck is this in 3D?
    3) The tone of the novel is that beneath all the glitz is a real sense of ennui, regret, sadness, and underlying tension. For all the pretty-all of the characters are miserable. Since all Baz L movies end up being extended music videos, I worry none of that nuance will make it
    4) the trailer reads as a checklist of the ‘important objects’ of the novel. Dock? Check. Eye billboard? Check.

    • Gossip Hound says:

Good point on #3. This movie may be all glitz and no substance. Yep-they are hitting all the major symbols in the book like it’s a checklist.
The symbolism in the book is pretty heavy handed, so maybe over the top Baz L. IS the right guy to make this movie.

    • ZenB!tch says:

I was 20 and hated Claire Danes and John Leguiziamo (sp) and anything gang or mob so I missed it. I still love the Garbage Song #1 Crush but thankfully I can differentiate it from the movie.

      1. no discussion – no one comes near the greatness of Redford
      2. to make more money
      3. True dat
      4.True datas well.

ICK! Lenguiziamo was also in Moulin Rouge which I saw on DVD and LOATHED – he’s not in this one is he?

  41. Listerino says:

I really thought Carrie Mulligan did not act like Daisy at all, but otherwise I was blown away by that trailer. It’s going to more than meet my expectations. The Great Gatsby is one of my all time favourite books and so I’ve really been waiting for this remake since I heard about it.

  42. tar says:

Love Baz Luhrmann, love this book, I can’t wait to see his interpretation of it, a must-see for me!

  43. HoustonGrl says:

I’d been looking forward to the release of this film, but now I’m kind of meh. Of course the book is one of the greats, but somehow no one ever seems to capture it well on screen. I think all these actors are overrated and seem quite sedated in the preview. What’s with all the pausing?

    Anyway…I’ll redbox this one.

  44. NerdMomma says:

Are you guys serious about hating this trailer? I watched it and I can not WAIT to go see this movie!!! I loved the book, but I have not seen any of the other movies that have been made for it… but this looks all kinds of fabulous and exciting. I didn’t think I’d want to see it because whiny Spiderman is going to whine his way through it, but they played him way down in the trailer so maybe they didn’t put him in the movie too much. One can hope. Leo looks foxy.

    • Gossip Hound says:

I am confused by the trailer, but I’m totes going to see this movie. And I haven’t set foot inside a movie theater since I saw Walk the Line. Literally have not been to a movie since 2005.

    • Bodhi says:

Ditto! I am SUPER excited to see this & I think the trailer is fantastic!

  45. Gossip Hound says:

The Afghan Whigs should have written the soundtrack to this movie.

  46. Turd Fergussen says:

Awesome. Take one of the greatest books of all time and turn it into a self-indulgent hot mess. The English major in me cringes. Now I see why J.D. Salinger wouldn’t relinquish the rights to Catcher in the Rye. No telling what some crazed Hollywood director would do to it all in the name of ego and vanity.

Also, Carey Mulligan is totally miscast as Daisy. I will not be seeing this train wreck.

  47. Theresa says:

This movie looks EXPEN$IVE! I doubt it will do well financially, I am not sure of one successful (commercially at least) movie that is set in the 20s. I find the era very hard to get in to, and I don’t think this film will resonate with today’s audiences. Plus, it is confusing how Baz likes to use anachronistic styling; it clashes and jars an audience rather than dazzles. Or at least it does for me and ultimately rings hollow. I have seen two of his films, R&J and Moulin Rouge and neither of them are memorable enough for me to recall anything except the starring cast.

I wonder when studios will stop throwing money at him. Ironically, I think he helped create the movie audience of today; one that wants a lot of bells and whistles regardless of the story. But I think he has lost touch with what entertains people, and his earnestness to remake classics, but to “baz” it up (awesome comment earlier) does not work the magic it once did.

  48. normades says:

Wow, that was over the top.

That said I’d rather see this visual mess than most of the other summer blockbusters.

  49. Aud says:

Don’t like Carey Mulligan at all.

  50. Ade says:

I think it looks AWESOME…better than the original. Although I am disappointed with Carey Mulligan’s performance.

  51. bns says:

Some things should just never be remade…

And Leo is always so dramatic. I’m over it.

  52. Michele says:

I just saw the trailer yesterday and was very impressed. I’m not sure about it being in 3D, though. I’m not too crazy about 3D movies in general. I always get a headache wearing the glasses.

    • Turtle Dove says:

      Uhh… me too. I don’t like 3D at. all.

My question is, how the h*ll is the studio going to sell this post release? Do they do 3D on iTunes and DVD purchases? I’d love to have the movie, but I won’t buy it in 3D.

  53. Kim says:

First thing I thought was Moulin Rouge – didnt know it was by the same guy. It looks good – a modern take on Gatsby yet still set in the 1920’s. But whats up with Leos puffy face? fillers? He looks terrible.

  54. Emma says:

I’m surprised to see that there’s people who dislike Carey Mulligan. I guess I understand that some don’t like her as a person, each to their own and all that, but as an actress? She’s one of the most talented actresses from her generation and I’m sure she’ll be great in this movie too.

    • @Emma says:

What`s so surprising that people don`t like her as an actress? Different people have different taste. That`s not surprising. I have seen some of her movies and I wasn`t impressed by her at all. Also I doubt a lot of commenters know her `as a person`. There`s barely anything to know about her she is very low-key. Her acting is overrated.

      • Emma says:

Because I don’t think that recognising talent is about opinion. You can dislike her style of acting, but you have to admit that she is good at it. Just like some people don’t like Katy Perry’s songs you must be aware of the fact that she does have a singing ability.
And when I wrote that I understand that some people don’t like her as a person, I thought it was pretty obvious that I meant the perception of her.

      • bns says:

@Emma – if you truly think Katy Perry is a good singer, then I don’t trust your opinion on anything.

      • @Emma says:

Yes, that`s exactly what it is about. Some consider a certain actor or actress talented but not others. It`s plain and simple. I`m actually quite surprise that that`s how you see it. It`s all about taste. You like Carey and I think she is boring and not that talented. We are different and we have different opinion. Kathy Perry should sing some songs to prove she has singing abilities because so far her `talent` is average.

      • Emma says:

Well, maybe you (and others with you) let your opinions on who someone is as a person infect what you think of their actual work.

    • mercy says:

Carey is very talented and she seems like a nice person, but that doesn’t make her right for every role or mean she will have chemistry with every actor she works with. That goes for Leo as well. Most of the leads seem miscast, and even though I like Luhrman I’m not convinced he was the right person to make this film.

    • Emma says:

@bns: I didn’t say Katy Perry was a good singer, I said she has a singing ability. Quite the difference.
@mercy: Yes, I agree. It was the comments on Carey being a bad actress that bothered me, because she’s clearly good at what she does. I am, however, doubtful that this project will turn out to be a good one, but I’ll just have to wait and see on that. The trailer is so all over the place that I can’t make a judgement on it.

  55. Turtle Dove says:

To all the people b*tching about Leo not branching out.. well look at this trailer. Leo has been moving away from the typical fare and trying new things. Bravo to him.

You have to admit that J. Edgar was a big departure in his presentation physically and with the character. Any flaws with that film rest solely on Eastwood and Black’s shoulders.

DiCaprio is one smart cookie, that’s for damn sure. As far as I know, he’s done something that few other actors have caught on to…. capturing young audiences via literature that’s studied in school:

    – Titanic, although huge in its time, is reality static with its then demographic.

    – What’s eating Gilbert Grape w/ “Of Mice and Men”. Leo gets to capture a new, younger audience with this film each time it’s used in conjunction with the novella.

    – Romeo and Juliet – still taught each year in Middle and High schools and again introduces a new, younger audience to his acting.

Gatsby – I heard students talking about field trips and being excited to see the movie already. This bodes well for Leo, box office, and Oscar, I think.

    Brilliant.

  56. Abby says:

Caveat: I’ve recently read the book for the first time and never seen any other version of the movie. I think this looks great. Leo seems perfect for this role. I think Carey seems a little young and she didn’t exactly fit, but I feel like Daisy should be languid and ethereal and Carey did capture that. As long as the whole movie isn’t like this trailer, I think it’ll be good. There was definitely excess and self-indulgence and crazy parties–that was the whole point of the book I feel like, but there should be slow scenes just sitting around with tension too. Can’t wait! I love Baz.

  57. Lotta says:

I love the book, and I love Baz, so I have to see this. I think it looks great!! 🙂

  58. Dee Cee says:

Awkward.. amateurs in a high school play with characters that don’t particularly like each other off stage ..

  59. Bodhi says:

I am not getting the hate-on for this. I think it looks AMAZING. GG is my favorite book & I think that Baz’s style goes great with the excess of the Roaring 20s. Its Baz freaking Luhrmann, people, what do you expect?

  60. lease says:

My expectations were so low that I was pleasantly surprised by the trailer – looks far better than I thought it would be (I love Moulin Rouge, so really, perfect audience). Not een on 3d though – I’ll definitley be watching a 2d version!

  61. Snowpea says:

This looks like a total mess.

It annoys me that Baz is such an amazingly talented guy and yet he’s turned into a one trick pony.

I KNOW that people will go and see this and rave about how post modern it is blah blah blah but I, for one, think it looks gimmicky and overwrought.

  62. mln76 says:

this trailerlooks like a bombastic, overblown spectacle.what is wrong with music from the period? there were some great songs that came out of the 1920’s! that is what i like about the 1974 gatsby and even about boardwalk empire: there was attention paid to keeping those productions period specific and they are not anachronistic.

carey mulligan doesn’t work as daisy. not only does her “acting” seem so boring and lifeless that she appears to be dead onscreen, i also think carey is very unattractive. i just don’t buy that she is supposed to be this gorgeous, enchanting woman that gatsby is supposed to be obessesed with. they couldn’t find someone else? seriously? an unknown would have been better then carey.

as for leo, i think if he were a bit younger he would fit better into this role. i wish they had found someone younger and fresher, maybe another unknown actor.

  63. mln76 says:

i think amanda seyfried would have been a better choice.

  64. lola says:

looks surprisingly promising–gorgeous period effects–though this novel has never translated well to film. I’m hoping they’re not doing it in 3D.

  65. jamie says:

I’m actually surprised. I’m not a Baz Lurman fan but this totally sucked me in. Wasn’t looking forward to it really before but now I can’t wait. Off to download that Jack White song.

    • Ally says:

I think it’s a U2 song originally. That Baz, always trying to appeal to the kidz.

  66. Ally says:

This will appeal to those who thought the point of the book was the excess and luxury, i.e. missed the entire point.

I love the Coppola-Redford version down to the lighting and the music. Di Caprio’s constipated baby face & Luhrmann’s pyrotechnics won’t do better.

    • Bodhi says:

Of course the excess of the 20s wasn’t the point of the book, but it was certainly front & center.

    • Ally says:

Of course, but to the extent that it stands in stark contrast to the barren ugliness of the partygoers as people, especially those at the top of the wealth pyramid. It is poor Gatsby’s tragedy that he still sees the ideal in his mind and not the reality of the people (especially Daisy) in front of him.

Unfortunately, there are many twits who read the book as a guide to partying in the 1920s. A special hat tip to that moron Diddy for hosting a Gatsby part in the Hamptons. Good thing he didn’t hang out by the pool that day, I guess.

    • Leslie says:

I love the Coppola-Redford version, too.

  67. Dee says:

    Hmmmm, I’m disappointed too.

  68. Jordan says:

eh, I didn’t really see the chemistry between Leo and Carrie. And I love them both as actors, so I don’t know, I probably won’t watch this one in theaters.

  69. Mandy says:

You know, I’ve never really had a thing for Leo but I think this movie might change that a little…

  70. Blunted says:

Was looking forward to this but no idea it was gonna be moulin rouge shit. Definite pass now. Not even worth bootlegging.

  71. LucyOriginal says:

1.Sorry, but I don’t like any Baz Luhrmann movie I saw (can’t say anything about Australia because I just didn’t want to see it). Moulin Rouge was absolutely dreadful.
    2. I like Carey, but I don’t know if she was the right cast for Daisy.
    3. I am glad Carey was cast instead of Blake Lively.
    4. Please Academy, give an Oscar to Leo, so he can stop trying so hard.
    5. Is Tobey narrating? Excuse my French, but: WTF?
    6. I already know I am not going to see this movie.

  72. Princess Di says:

I loved the trailer and love Baz’s work. Except Austrailia, wtf was that? I loved that they used popular music in the trailer. Jay Z and Kanye was an unexpected choice, plus it’s nice to see a NYC that isn’t whitewashed. Especially during the height of the Harlem Renassaince. Can’t wait!

  73. Peach Dancer says:

The trailer indeed looks impressive. I am not a fan of Leo DiC. but I am of Carey Mulligan and also Tobi Maquire (glad to see him in theatres again) so I put this one on my list.

  74. Leslie says:

Over-the-top crazy. That’s a good description: acid trip.

  75. Kate says:

i want to see this! sucks we have to wait until december

  76. Marcia says:

It looks better than I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be really crazy Moulin Rouge like and flashy. I like Carey Mulligan but she isn’t the best Daisy ever but she is better than all the actresses that were vying for the role (ie Blake Lively).

I still love the TV version of this with Mira Sorvino and Paul Rudd. That one was the best.

Also, I have to ask…wasn’t Gatsby from the Mid-West? And Daisy was Southern? Because it sounds like Leo is doing a Southern accent. I know Gatsby lies about his pedigree but I didn’t think he pretended to be Southern. Can anyone clear this up for me? Or was I hearing it wrong?

    http://youtu.be/MQuzYIceWUA

  77. LumaDay says:

I think the trailer looks really fun. It captures the crazed over-indulgent nature of Gatsby but certain scenes also show the underlying current of ennui and sadness. I think Baz is the only one who could make this movie and make it right, and Leo definitely fits as Gatsby. Not so sure about Mulligan as Daisy but only watching the whole movie will tell whether she pulls it off. Love that shirt scene, and the party scenes are very reminiscent of Moulin Rouge – Baz sure knows how to film a crazy party! Definitely going to see this movie opening week.

  78. jes_sayin says:

I’ll never understand the appeal of Leo the man-child. I think he’s SO over-rated.

And I’ve never seen any chemistry between him and his female lead. Never.

  79. Brittney says:

Isla Fisher’s in there, but only for a split-second… around the 2:05 mark.

  80. kaligula says:

Ridiculous. What a joke. Hollywood is so redundant nowadays. The only way they could’ve made this interesting would have been to make it with all black actors. Mekhi Phifer as Gatsby. Will Smith as Nick. Sanaa Lathan as Daisy. Age might be a bit off on this casting but anyway it’s a start….
