Prince Harry’s handlers, guards being blamed for Royal Jewel Scandal

These are some of the hilarious drawings and cartoons that the UK papers are running with yesterday and today, in the wake of Prince Harry and The Scandal of the Royal Jewels. Never have I been more proud to be an American when I realized that American blogs, newspapers and TV shows were all running with TMZ’s photos of Naked Harry, and that none of the UK outlets could use the photos. Why is that? Because the Queen’s lawyers have been threatening every UK media outlet!

A legal team representing the royal family has moved to block UK tabloids from running Prince Harry’s naked pictures, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. London-based law firm Harbottle & Lewis sent Britain’s biggest newspapers legal letters claiming that snaps of Harry, 27, covering his crown jewels with his hands during a game of naked billiards in Las Vegas over the weekend, were in breach of the Press Complaints Commission code.

However, despite the ban imposed on the British press, photos of Harry’s rear end have circulated around the world from U.S. to Australia!

“In an effort to sweep this under the carpet as quickly as possible, Harbottle & Lewis have told the British papers not to run Prince Harry’s naked pictures,” a source revealed. “The lawyers said any one publishing them would be in breach of the PCC. The media outlets were also warned that their privileges for access to media events featuring the royal family could be restricted if they did use the pictures. Of course, the British media is very careful when a royal scandal is revealed nowadays and has to bow down to the royal family’s demands. But despite the ban on the UK press, the pictures have already circulated around the world on the internet. Everyone has seen them, so Harry’s blushes will never be spared – not in this day and age,” the source revealed.

In an attempt at working around the ban, British tabloid The Sun staged their own reenactment. They hilariously snapped one of their reporters standing in the nude, clutching his private parts with a mystery girl behind him.

[From Radar]

You can see The Sun’s “re-enactment” here. I’m kind of surprised that Rupert Murdoch’s papers didn’t go ahead and run the photos anyway – it’s not like Murdoch and his journalists are royalists, or afraid of the Queen and her lawyers at all. But I guess Murdoch is weakened since the hacking scandal. As for the other papers, they’re mostly running cartoons, drawings, and old photos of Harry. It’s insane to me that the papers would self-censor just because the Queen’s lawyers threatened them… over a naked prince. These aren’t military secrets or some diplomatic controversy that needs to be covered up – it’s a celebrity scandal. Dear UK press: grow some balls.

Meanwhile, as Harry has returned to London, I’m sure he’s been getting a royal scolding from his father and from the Queen. But it seems like the blame is being shifted onto his staff:

The Royal Family is FURIOUS over the Prince Harry naked photo fiasco … and the anger isn’t directed solely at Harry — we’re told the family is also pointing the finger at the Prince’s minders and personal security team.

Here’s what we know. The night of the naked Vegas hotel party, Harry was hanging with two male friends … after some boozing, the group decided to bring a bunch of chicks they had just met back to Harry’s VIP suite at Encore.

That’s when Harry’s people dropped the ball.

When the girls entered the room, we’re told the ladies were NOT asked to surrender their phones … an epic failure considering Harry’s well-documented wild side.

As the party fired up, several girls began to snap pics on their cell-phones … and one of Harry’s minders lackadaisically told the women, “awww, come on .. no photos.”

Sources who were there tell TMZ … the minders were asleep at the wheel, enjoying the party more than protecting the Prince from himself.

After more boozing, the clothes came off … and more photos were taken, in plain view of the handlers, yet Harry’s people did nothing.

TMZ spoke with several people in the Las Vegas VIP scene who tell us they see situations like this every day and it could have been easily contained, but as one source put it, “Harry’s team acted like a bunch of amateurs.”

[From TMZ]

I’ve said before that I bet the royal security officers all really want to be on Harry’s detail, because Harry has the most fun. But even then… horrible, terrible staff work. Of course Harry should be blamed and punished… but good God, he needs better people around him too!

This! Its seems stupid to gather up a load of randoms in Vegas and not expect shizz to go down, his security team are not nannies to babysit him they are hired to provide security. It will be interesting to see how many of them keep their jobs after this.

The funny thing about this is, I could totally picture Harry sobbing “This is everyone’s fault but mine!” and possibly believing what comes out of his own mouth.

    • RocketMerry says:

Yep, that’s what I was thinking. He’s what, 25 or something? He needs to stop behaving like a little boy: the handlers should have been doing a better job, but people are basically going to get fired over him being friggin’ immature and his actions stupid.

Now, said that… “Of course Harry should be blamed and punished”. I’m on board. I’m great at discipline :D

He will be 28 on the 15th of September. He is an officer in the British Army and a senior member of the Royal family, so any excuses that he’s just a lad don’t hold much weight with me. In the grand scheme of things getting naked in Las Vegas in a private hotel suite is not the end of the world but the fact that he, his friends, and his protection officers were all so careless and lacking in discretion as to not ban the camara phones is cause for concern.

I don’t think Harry personally blames his handlers. I think he’s probably downing a bottle of tequila, giggling and sulking because he got booted back to home after getting his ginger nuts out for everyone.

I love it and I think he’s hilarious! He can come play pool with me any day!

I agree that it seems that the ROYALS are blaming the security detail NOT Harry. I’m sure they are more like his entourage than his minders at this point. This is pretty typical spring break behavior and Harry probably didn’t get to let loose like this when he was on school breaks. He is a late bloomer and unfortunately it looks crazy at 28 years old. Poor lad. I hope his accountability and judgement catches up with his age after this episode.

I agree. He’s a young guy partying in Vegas but he should know better. I’m sure worse sh*t goes down in all those swank hotel suites. 15 years ago someone could’ve gotten away with antics like that but everyone has a cell phone with a camera now. He’s probably laughing about it and feels bad that his family is embarrassed but I doubt he’s crying over it. And it’s probably not the first time it’s happened – he just got caught “on film” this time.

I’m of the opinion that he should be allowed some harmless fun and I don’t begrudge him some privacy on the issue. His minders’ job is to protect his privacy, so in that respect it is their fault. And point of fact, he’s not whining about it. His family is. He embarrassed them, but don’t we all do something that makes our parents cringe at some point? I pity his obligations to the monarchy. He didn’t ask for them. I don’t see how this is his fault, really.

I guess I’m in the minority here. I totally think it’s 100% their fault. Wouldn’t it be their job to collect people’s phones? If they are supposed to protect him, I’m pretty sure that would be included…THEY should have been the sober ones watching to make sure this didn’t happen.

I’m seriously surprised at how many people are pissed and saying he should act like an adult. Sorry, but he is rich, famous, handsome and he was having sex with a woman (naked!). That IS acting like an adult! A rich famous one. What adult in his position would be doing anything different?

      Just my opinion!

I agree totally. There is a much bigger issue here than naked pictures, it is a security team who was too dumb or lazy to do their job. That phone could have been a weapon.

I would think a good security team would know how to let their charge live their life, yet protect their privacy and health at the same time.

Harry needs a new security team, one he can trust.

I agree with you. I was in Vegas earlier this year and did I act as though I was at home? No! I was on vacation. I guess most people here think my life should be ruined b/c of what I did in my hotel room. *shrugs* And it is their job to protect Harry from things like this, if not, why were they there? Most big celebs have these people that do their job correctly, apparently, b/c there are not that many pics that make it out of Vegas of them.

Much ado about nothing. Harry naked or Harry in uniform, it doesn’t matter in the slightest – he’s still the same lovable, charitable, good-hearted guy. In fact, this situation amuses me and even makes me like him more. Harry is delightfully human. I hope he can laugh about this at some point… when half the world stops being scandalized by his shocking behavior.

Seems to me that part of that security protection would include his reputation and image. Seeing girls snapping naked pics of him and not putting a stop to it DOES seem a part of their job to me. If these girls were allowed to pull out cameras so easily then what would have stopped them from picking up a table knife and stabbing him?

I think they should all be fired.

      1. Agree it was a moronic move on Harry’s part. Maybe he should try to pick up less skanky (hanging around the bar in Vegas) girls next time.

      2. However if I paid bodyguards, “handlers”, etc. money for “security” (i.e. saving me from my own indiscretions), I would expect them to do their morally compromising job and not slack off. Sigh – good help is hard to find (but naked pics of Prince Harry aren’t)!

      3. Go ahead and blame your “handlers”, dude. It’s so much easier to do that than to actually grow up and be responsible for your own actions.

Other than having the pics leaked, which imo is 100% the guards fault, I would think it would be standard procedure for them to take people’s phones.

@ OTiff…you took the words right out of my mouth. Promiscuous is the last thing I would ever call myself, BUT…at that age, at a raging pool party, everyone over-served and a smokin’ ginger Prince? Seriously, I don’t get why so much praise get thrown at these mediocre people. Unless not completely sucking is now praiseworthy.

And the argument against a republic seems to boil down to, “What, would you have one of us do it? We hate us!” No, better these people who, I guarantee you do not give a second thought about anything but their own privilege, represent the UK. Or the false argument of costs that never takes into account security costs, the various grants provided by the government, or the fact that the various Ducal estates that provides the bulk of their income belongs to the people of the UK, not the Windsors.

People stan for Harry and William but how is it okay to keep sending their elderly grandparents out to do unglamorous jobs while they whine about their lives? William, especially. Harry is Prince Andrew part II and William’s version of being normal is making use of his privileges while partying as much as his wealthy friends and avoiding any responsibilities.

There’s little to no substance there with both of them.

William was getting bad press in the UK, and hey, look he finally went back to work and even saved someone again. How convenient. Everything is okay with Harry because one magical day in the future he’ll actually go back to Afghanistan.

As for the older members of the family: Prince Charles actually does dabble in government decisions -google around and you’ll find the stories, and the Queen is a whiny snob who is mostly protected because it’s a huge faux pas to repeat her words. But more often than not what we do get to hear is rude and demanding. And Prince Andrew has only gotten away with his behavior because the Queen protects him. She resented Mick Jagger being knighted but has no problem giving Andrew honors. Seriously, does being a Knight of the Garter even mean anything anymore or is it just another funny costume for royalty if even Andrew and William are members?

Sorry for the rant. I’m still grossed out by homeless people being used as forced labor for the Jubilee Regatta.

It’s wrong to infantilize Harry or to shift the blame on his staff. I don’t know what the technical responsibilities are of the staff, but they are probably more like making sure he is safe, has everything he needs, etc. They should not be responsible for making sure Harry does not make an ass out of himself. This is HARRY’s responsibility, pure and simple.

I don’t see how people can (rightly) hold Kristen Stewart accountable for her affair when she tries to put it off on Rupert Sanders and NOT hold Harry completely as accountable for this. He is an ADULT and he should not have babysitters. He should not be getting a pass from either the media or the Royal Family.

I don’t know what the job requirements are of his security and his minders, so I can’t really judge whether or not they were asleep on the job. But seriously, this should not be their job in the first place.

The bummer is that Prince Harry will probably curtail all of his partying with the peasants due to the freak that sold him out with these photos. After this episode he probably will only party with his inner circle.

His security team and handlers did not do their job and they probably should have prevented the prince from bringing the women back to the room. These women sound like gutter rats. If they sold the pictures to TMZ what is to prevent them from selling their story.

For all the people who are saying he’s to old for this-what do you think happens when you are single, in your mid-20′s in Vegas? Heck-divorced guys in their 40′s-50′s party like that. This stuff happens all the time there.

I think it’s a big much ado about nothing. Those pictures aren’t even that bad. AND I think grandma is a prude who is trying to blame staff when I think Harry would admit it was his own decision.

    • Sachi says:

I agree. I don’t think anything is wrong with the photos, whether it’s a man or a woman who is naked in them. Some semblance of privacy and discretion should have been kept by all the people in that room, especially since it seems all of them were consenting adults and must have had the assumption that whatever happened in that room would just be between themselves.

These photos were taken in Harry’s hotel room. It should have stayed private, except Harry wasn’t very smart with the company he kept that night.

I’m not shocked or offended that Harry does things like this. Many people in their 20s do the same thing. The only surprise here is that the photos were leaked and sold.

Maybe next time, Harry will be more careful in whoever he chooses to party with and invite to his suite.

First of all, I seriously doubt Harry is breaking a sweat about this incident. I’m sure he’s sitting there, putting on the appropriate front of contrition while he’s being chastised. However, we have no evidence that Harry is blaming anyone for this. It is more likely that his family wants to blame anyone but their own; hence, let some “common nobody” take the fall for it. Again, no evidence, so this is how I imagine it to be.

Additionally, I’m not the kind of girl that would have stalked the prince or obliged him with my company, but if I were, you can be damned sure I would bust the fingers of anyone who tried to take my camera/phone from me. I don’t care if you are royalty, you don’t have the right to take my property and if you are laughing and having a good time and I snap a few pictures and you don’t politely ask me not to, then it’s all fair. We are not living in the UK.

I think there must have been an intent to cash in on the photos to begin with. Whoever sold the photos found a quick way to cash in.

And we all know Harry likes to party and he’s not some virginal choirboy. But this is the first time that photos were leaked. I doubt this is the only time Harry has stripped down and it was recorded/documented by someone.

So if Harry has had photos of the same nature taken by others in the parties he’s attended before, were those people “loyal” enough to not have come forward and expose him? Or maybe others have tried to come forward, but the Palace was quick to act on it?

Or is it because of the current libel law, which is very strict and can be easily used by the powerful and influential to “censor” these types of stories, so the UK media are reluctant to publish such photos?

Personally, if I had photos of a naked Harry, I won’t share it with the world. I’d keep it in a USB and stow it in a place that is only known by me. Why would I want to share those? I’d like to be the only one (other than his ex-girlfriends) who can look at naked Harry whenever I want. :D :D :D

@Sachi – 1. the fact that the security were relaxed about it reads to me that this wasn’t a one off, but those women didn’t sell the pictures or post them on FB etc

        2. There has always been censorship. If TMZ had reached out to the palace ahead of publication, a deal would have been struck and they would never have seen the light of day. remember Sophie and the fake shiekh or indeed William’s various party pictures.

        3. And if censorship fails, libel laws as they have done for UK media.

        4. i think the fact this went viral in minutes, made it impossible to contain.

@ LAK – I wonder if TMZ even tried to reach out, or if they just didn’t care. I would think they’re beyond the reach of the Palace and the libel laws, so the photos were easily published.

A lot of international media were quick to pick up the stories, too, so the Palace probably didn’t have any choice but to just say that it was Harry and that’s that. Let it blow over.

Yeah, I had a laugh when I saw the photos. Harry looked almost shy when he was covering himself! :D Nobody’s doing anything illegal. Nothing grossly offensive in the photos.

If he spoke on his own behalf, circumventing the PR front of Queenie, I think that that is when he would be feeling the real wrath. Shutting up, doing as told and keeping oneself out of the way with eyes down seems like it would be the de rigeur operating stance for scandal management. Contrition and personal responsibility don’t even enter into the equation, it’s a non-concern in maintaining the dignity of the public face of the Firm. At this point, Queenie can’t be personally scandalized by every sex scandal that explodes within her indiscreet family, this must just be disengaged business as usual.

I don’t feel like the world has a right to see photos of everything everybody famous does. I’m no better off having seen them, and it’s just nonsense anyway – somebody partying, whoopee.

I would impose a ban on papping children as well, and the Queen successfully managed this for the most part while Wills and Harry were growing up and I appreciated that.

They’re not really “celebrities”, they are still members of the Royal Family, and since they are a part of living history and supposed to be dignified, I’d rather not see them acting up, actually. We do not have a “right” to see everything everybody does in the world. More privacy is needed in my opinion.

And having said all that, they should also be acting accordingly, not getting naked in front of strangers; that was incredibly stupid of him AND his handlers. They’re all to blame. So he gets what he gets. And he will pay for this and already is, so he’s getting his repercussions already.

The fact remains that he has embarrassed the royal family.

Part of the responsibility of being “royal” is to represent the Queen in as good a light as possible and to behave in such a manner that shows your role benefits the country. He’s on the civil list and paid to do a good job by the citizens of the UK, not cavort around naked with a bunch of bimbos he just met like he’s 21 and on spring break in Florida.

He’ll end up as disrespected as good old Uncle Andrew or Prince Albert of Monaco if he keeps this kind of behaviour up.

Report this comment as spam or abuse

    • LAK says:

The civil list only covers expenses incurred whilst on official duty. This holiday wasn’t ‘duty’.

He wasn’t representing anyone but himself for 10 days. And that includes hos army job. He paid for entire holiday bar the security himself.

Surely you’ve gone on holiday from your job and don’t expect your holiday snaps to end up a talking point world wide?

He showed lack of judgement by partying with randoms, but the opposite solution is for him to party only with his own kind, in exclusive places, which is a short cut to turning him into an elitist snob who can’t relate to normal people.

He was in Vegas for days, many people were tweeting and taking pictures of him. None of them had the foresight or sleazy idea of selling their pictures to the highest bidder.

Now this story has broken, i am sure people are thinking of ways to cash in….which they probably hadn’t thought of before.

Especially if they get paid to do their job, because let’s face it, it seems like they want to be in on the fun, the free travel & accommodation, the perks, but that’s not why they are employed. Or is it? Perhaps their employment contract isn’t very clear as to what they are there for. Prince Harry is no ordinary adult, and will be singled out because of what he represents. He can thank his lucky stars he is not married, and still fairly young, but this sort of publicity cant be what he needs or wants. The Royal Establishment needs to make his security minders duties clearer in the contract, so both they and Harry can understand it.
