X-Factor premiere featuring Britney and Demi: amazing or average?

Last night was the big premiere of the X-Factor US season two, featuring new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. I’m not a big fan of reality competition shows, although I’ve watched American Idol in the past. X-Factor is different from similar shows and has a kind of gritty realness to it. The emotion seems right on the surface, and they really ratchet up the drama. The backstage scenes make you feel like you’re overhearing conversations instead of listening to a contestant try to impress an interviewer. For instance we got to see two sisters, Kaci and Kaylee, gossiping and mean-girling other contestants with comments like “you look better than she does,” and “she has a run in her stocking.” When Kaci went on stage and failed miserably, there was real satisfaction in it for the at-home audience.

In another scene, a contestant with experience touring in a boy band tried to give advice backstage to his competition, three teenage boys in a band. The boys were receptive, but later told the cameras that they write their own music and play their own instruments and don’t consider themselves a “boy band.” When the veteran failed miserably and the three teens killed it, we got to share in their triumph.

As for how the judges did, I have to say that Demi was my favorite. She was warm, honest and genuine and held her own in some mild spats with Simon. Toward the end of this episode, when the group was in their third location of Providence, Rhode Island, a 19 year-old girl came onstage and told Demi that she looked up to her and was grateful for her anti-bullying campaign. The girl, Jillian Jenson, was the victim of bullying throughout school and explained that she often cried herself to sleep. As she belted out a song everyone was amazed at what a talented, powerful singer she was. Even Simon was moved and got a tear in her eye. Jillian and Demi hugged afterwards as Jillian sobbed.

Britney definitely held her own, I have to say. We’ve heard that she had problems on set and walked off the first day, but none of that was shown. Instead, we got to see her be incredibly blunt and to-the-point with many singers. Even when Britney was giving praise it could come across as harsh. She doesn’t mince words. There were flashes of crazy Britney when we saw her mocking Simon’s accent backstage, but she’s a tough cookie, she came across as in control and she seems fine overall. She was nervous during her introductory segment in which she spoke just to the camera, but other than that I got a very good impression of her. I think this is going to be her comeback.

Oh and there was a scene where a guy auditioned in San Francisco who had sung a duet with Britney 10 years ago. TMZ reported on this audition when it happened. The guy was a mess and was crying before he performed. All the judges told him that his voice wasn’t strong enough and that he couldn’t get through, and Britney very firmly told him “No.” She didn’t seem to cry or fret much about it, or maybe it was edited that way. She’s comfortable judging talent and she’s just as bitchy as Simon. I’m going to watch this show again for sure, I just hope they cut future episodes to one hour because it’s hard to spare two, even after you fast forward through the commercials.

I have to give a shout out to TV Fanatic for their review also. They have a very nice overview of all the contestants last night, good and bad, as well as their thoughts on the judges. They agree with me on Britney and Demi. Oh and I liked L.A. Reid! I didn’t watch last season so I wasn’t familiar with him, and he brings a real industry perspective and comes across like such a professional. Simon is Simon, and is always making rude comparisons. At one point he was incredibly rude to a 14 year-old boy. I wish he would consider who he’s talking to before he opens his mouth.

I actually thought the whole thing seemed like a scripted hot mess

    • Canda says:

Same. The whole bullied girl thing dragged on forever and was milked for everything it was worth. Ugh.

      • QQ says:

YOP! ITA i actually tweeted: ” These Manipulative Sons of Bitches” cause that’s how That mess in the end felt

Also I dont know if i can hang on to this show and Britney’s Raccoon makeup and no bra doing Hawt Derg Faces cause I could almost take shots to that Whole Gaping Maw Thing

      • TheEmpress says:

Seriously. If you can’t deal with people being mean to you or make it through your audition song without crying, you’re in the wrong business.

    • Bubbaang says:

It seemed like it was scripted and mega-edited (kinda phony and over-dramatic). I’m sort of ashamed that I watched it all and have it saved on my pvr, just so I can watch the 3 guys sing.

I’m glad Britney seems to be doing better, but she still seems a little bit “off” to me.

    • Me Too says:

Thank God! When I read the above piece I have to admit I was beginning to think I was a cold biotch. It was BORING and a complete waste of time. It was so staged and frankly I found most of the so called emotional parts completely fake. Brittany surprised me yes. Yay she didn’t freak out. Otherwise BORING! Won’t bother again.

    • Lizzie says:

Agree! The whole mean-girl thing was exactly that. At one point I was also wondering if it was a show about who could cry the best and the longest.

  2. beyonce's bump says:

I don’t understand…I thought they were already on xfactor? what is this premiere ish? (I don’t follow the show…or them)

    • Ailine says:

They promoted the hell out of this show. So much so that it seemed like it was on the air already. It wasn’t. Just premiered.

  3. MoxyLady007 says:

I have never even seen an episode of American Idol- I was just never interested. But I caught a huge chunk of this – mostly for Britney- and I thought she was really really great. She seemed tense and nervous sometimes but got more and more comfortable it seemed. Very happy for her. I just want her to do well so badly! LoL I know that’s weird.

  4. Just U says:

I love X Factor UK (I live in Ireland) and watched the US show last year too. The show is starting here tonight so I can’t wait!!!
So good to hear Britney is doing well, I was kinda worried for her.

  5. LeManda says:

I find the way they edit the show very nauseating.
Over-all I didn’t hate it. I really enjoyed Demi and I’ll tune back in to see more of Britney. Considering I didn’t watch last season at all I suppose the producers can consider this a win.

  6. Tifygodess24 says:

I have never seen the Xfactor before but I really enjoyed it. I’m a huge Britney fan ( don’t just meh lol ) so I had to tune in. I really like the dynamic of the 4 , they have chemistry which is nice to see. And dare I say Simon seems a bit protective over BritBrit and Demi. Yes he says crap in interviews for ratings and what not but you can see in his mannerisms that he gives the protective vibe. I actually liked him last night. I think the further along the show gets you will see Britney open up more and more , it’s already showing in the interviews shes been out giving. She joking and laughing like she did back in the day. And she has that light back we haven’t seen in a while.

    • ronnie says:

Simon seems like an asshole but once you find a place in that little black heart of his then you’re set. Just look at the way he treats his exes. Great parting gifts.

  7. Phil says:

I loved all the judges, and Simon is just very truthful…he’s seen a lot of people waste his time thinking they can sing, so I like him. He’s entertaining anyway. First talent competition where the judges didn’t annoy me with their comments. And I think Britney’s was just a little too edited, but she looks great I must say

  8. Raven says:

I thought it was great! I was really impressed with Britney and Demi. Can’t wait until it comes on tonight!

  9. Lila says:

It’s not like they are walking down the street saying rude things to random people. These people are coming on the show, asking to be judged. And judging panels always seem to be made up of a mixture of tough and easy judges. I don’t see any reason why the judges need to mince words. Good for Britney and Simon.

    • Phil says:

AGREED. These participants are doing something called an audition. Of course they are going to be judged, and I think they have a good mix of judges.

  10. Annie says:

I watched last night because I wanted to see Britney, and was so pleased to see how well she did. I’ll be watching next week, but also hope it’s only an hour long.

  11. Jayna says:

I like the judging panel. Brit Brit was a nice surprise, very forthright. Demi is a great addition because she is a young popstar who has been in the business since she was young, but definitely speaks her mind and good to bring in young viewers. One of the few young popstars to have a strong voice.

L.A. is great because that man makes stars. He can really sign people. Simon tells is like it is always. But his new white T-shirt look, ugh, makes him look old. He wore it on Ellen too. He must think it’s his new signature look. Just, no.

The way the show is edited is better than last year (cheesy, contrived), but it still is a little too contrived. That blonde bimbo from the south got way too much storyline that amounted to nothing.

But overall not bad for a first night. I wish they would get rid of a lot of the really really bad singers and only throw in a few. That whole sthtick AI has run into the ground and maybe why The Voice has been such a hit. You’re hearing decent, average or amazing singers, but never jokes showing up.

It’s still not as good as The Voice, which is firing on all cylinders this season. Superb singers. The format with the judges being a bigger part of the show fighting each other for their team right off the bat has more momentum early on. Plus, they all have great chemistry.

I think bringing on Khloe Kardashian as one of the hosts for X Factor will be a great addition. I actually love Khloe.

  12. GoodCapon says:

    Amazingly average.

My sister tricked me into watching this with her. I love Simon and his bitchiness, but he can be downright inconsiderate sometimes.

  13. MJ says:

Demi Lovato is so pretty. But I do miss the old days – nothin like a high-as-a-kite, slurring Paula Abdul to lighten your mood.

  14. Becky says:

Never watched x factor before but I’m about to right now, and it’s all be ause of Britney. Simon is an evil genius.

  15. jano1981 says:

I missed it! Directv was out last night where I live. So glad to hear so many positive opinions of Britney’s part in the show. I always wish Britney to do well.

  16. Diva says:

I like Britney BUT who is she to tell someone they can’t sing? Girl has spent over 10 years lipsynching. If she was on a dance competition I would get it but whatever. I can’t really get into any of these shows. I hope she does well.

    • Kayla says:

So you don’t have a problem with Simon or LA judging singers even though they can’t sing either? Just because Britney isn’t the best singer doesn’t mean she’s deaf, she can still judge how others sing. By your logic you must be a great singer to know that Britney can’t sing then. Why didn’t you audition?

  17. Sandip says:

Never watched before, but now I will. I loved Brittany on the show she was very real, too cute and funny.

  18. sharylmj says:

I loved it!!! it was super entertaining! I feel like Britney and Demi bring honesty and they don’t try to sugar coat it like Paula did… I get so sick of that!! I’m excited for the next show and usually I HATE this portion when they are trying to find the talent…. on any of these kinds of shows. Britney was great! She’s definately a HUGE star and acted like her opinion was the only one that mattered!! HA!

  19. Hotpockets says:

I hate these shows, mainly because they are scripted and mostly fake.

I had a classmate audition for AI a few years ago, this girl was beautiful and had an even more beautiful voice. When she auditioned it was just in-front of a panel of strangers who then told her that she could go through, but this involved driving to another city. She ended up driving 6 hours to a large building where there were about 300 other contestants. At this point, she said they had everyone in the same room forever and then started counting everybody and separated them, only one group of people were then allowed to move on in the competition and it was entirely random. She later asked why she hadn’t been chosen to move on and they told her that she wasn’t right for the show, but that she was really talented, they implied they were looking for more dramatic characters.

I just thought this was ridiculous, it was like they played with people and the ones who were genuinely talented and cool were let go. After hearing her story it made me realize that these shows, even the talent ones, are all about creating story lines and not finding real talent.

  20. itstrue says:

I thought Britney did great…although I did notice her obsessing over her fingers. I’ve seen the pics of her bloody fingertips and she is definitely a person who takes out anxiety in OCD kinds of ways. I was proud of her, but can tell it’s a lot of stress and pressure for someone who may not be the best equipped to handle it.

  21. tru tru says:

I’ll never watch it because Britney can’t sing or dance herself–why is she a judge?? oh..for viewers. no thank you.

  22. Dee Cee says:

Britney’s having fun.. leave her alone..

  23. Samantha says:

It was surprisingly entertaining, given how ubiquitous these types of shows have gotten. I watched mostly for Britney, have to admit, but wound up really liking Demi.

That Britney duet guy was so over-the-top. At first I felt bad for him, but then he just got kind of ridiculous.

Oh, but I do wish Brit would get some new makeup artists. It looked like she did her hair and makeup herself.

  24. KellyinSeattle says:

I’ve never watched it; hate these shows where they keep you in suspense forever just to get you to hang on through the advertising.
I’m rooting that Britney will do well (doesn’t she have two boys? Where are they? Hint, hint Kaiser, we want a story on this…anyone else?)….and Demi looked pretty in the above pic.

    • Lauren says:

What do you mean where are her boys? Are they supposed to be sitting at the judges table with her?

    • KellyinSeattle says:

no, no….I just never hear of them lately. I guess I’m out of the loop. I thought she had 2 boys with K-Fed. Maybe she’s just doing a good job keeping them out of the spotlight….

  25. Lacie says:

How about this. I’ll watch ANY of these shows when just one of their judges could actually win the show they’re judging.

Unless of course that judge is Mariah Carey. Bitch is insufferable.

  26. Tara says:

I watched it last night and was VERY impressed and entertained by Britney. She looked great and it was always interesting to see her reaction to the contestants. I think she let her personality shine through and didn’t seem nervous or robotic at all. People can say what they want about Britney lipsyncing in the past, but the reality is that she’s had more success than the contestants can ever dream of – through being a recording artist first and foremost. Every record label is drooling over the thought of signing her on when her current contract expires, and the X Factor is going to do great things for her.

I’m also impressed by Demi. I thought she was a bad choice at first because of her age and lack of major success in the industry, but she was actually very charming and had good feedback for the contestants as well. I think she’s a great addition to the team and I’m gonna keep watching every episode just so I can see her and Britney.

    • Sunny says:

Yes, Britney has had more success than these contestants, and no, LA and Simon don’t sing. Here’s the thing though – My issue with Britney Spears is she sings like a chipmunk on helium and it’s people like LA and Simon that made her a star ( it is X factor – aside from singing what is appealing and can be marketed?). Britney was marketed and dressed and groomed along. Her songs were written for her (oh, I’m sorry, she “co-wrote” a few) and once she balked – for whatever reason, she’s never conformed her exact diagnosis – and went off the deep end she was lucky enough to have some people left to take charge. The same ones people want to criticize for running her life and forcing her to work. The conservator role is very different from what people believe, and clearly it has only done her well. So again she has people pulling her together to be successful. But every time I hear her in an interview she sounds obnoxious, whiny and throws in a few kindergarten funny faces. This woman has no place to judge another’s talent. I’m not deaf so can I be a judge? Don’t really care for Demi either as a judge, but someone please get somebody else up there who has talent for something!

  27. KMD says:

Those three boys were amazing. They had that stoner surfer type of music (like Pepper, Slightly Stoopid sound). I really liked them.

  28. Casey says:

my favorite part was the montage of britney and everyone saying she was really mean. i thought it was hilarious. i’m a bad person so i really enjoy seeing people humiliated on television.

  29. mimi says:

Britney Spears SERIOUSLY needs a new makeup artist. WTF!

  30. TheTruthHurts says:

I loved it. Britney was fun and entertaining and Demi was adorable.

  31. Kosmos says:

I saw the show for the first time last night. I was surprised to find Britney to be very nice to the contestants, and found her to be compassionate. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Lovato, though. I don’t think she should have been a judge, in my opinion. Sometimes she appears to think a little too much of herself, but other times she seems okay. I totally AGREE that the drama of having the contestants bring all of their sad (but true) stories to the front is a little over the edge for me. Sure, we like to know what they are trying to overcome, but they should then sing, but not sing & cry or go into a highly agitated emotional state.

  32. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

Demi came across really well, very likeable and pretty girl.

Britney looked rough as hell. My hubby kept commenting about how awful she looked and what a ‘derp’ face she had lol.
I had to wonder if she didn’t have an ear piece in with a producer or someone telling her what to say. It wouldn’t have surprised me.

    • Hotpockets says:

That’s what I think or that the show is heavily edited, surprise! I feel like Britney Spear’s handlers are using this show as a platform to showcase the new and healthy Britney, which I still think she is just as crazy now as she was during her head shaving, pink wig wearing days.

  33. d says:

Oh man, rock on Britney and Demi!

  34. Tara says:

Britney looked a MESS. Her skin, hair and makeup looked awful and she looks really old for only being 30. I thought Demi was refreshing and looked beautiful.

  35. Aqua says:

When it was first announced that Demi was going to be a judge on the X Factor along with Brittney I was a little worried that Demi would be overshadowed by her.But Demi did a wonderful job last night. She was honest but not overly mean and she look great. The show definitely had a younger feel to it.

  36. Gabby says:

    Love Demi!!!

  37. Salla says:

People are happy cause britney is better.. im sorry but i think her lines were all scripted and edited. once i heard simon say to her “u sounded very natural”. they have very talented stylist for the show also.
but.. all my friends who had watched thought the same (here in Finland)that this was so scripted that it hurted to watch. and someone could say something about britneys “talents”, can she really sing? that demi girl i cant say anything, cause havent heard her music anywhere.. she isnt popular in europe.
