Tom Cruise pointedly avoids looking at Scientology protestor

People are making a big deal out of the fact that Tom Cruise gave Spencer Pratt advice on how he should have conducted his wedding to Heidi Montag, saying that “If the girl wants the [big] wedding, you gotta do the wedding. It’s a special occasion, and she’ll remember it forever. Spencer… dude… you’ll realize this later.”

The fact is that the MTV people interviewing Cruise had to explain the situation to him and specifically asked if he had advice for this guy he probably has never heard of who eloped with his girlfriend, who was hoping for a traditional wedding.

US Weekly, which has been all over the Spencer/Heidi fake wedding with two separate cover stories, reports this news and also has a response from Spencer: “If Tom Cruise says so, it must be true. If Tom’s the best man, we’ll have a big wedding!”

Spencer doesn’t address whether he and Heidi have done the necessary paperwork to make their marriage official. They certainly laid the groundwork for that reality show focusing on their relationship that they’re said to be gunning for, they don’t need to complicate matters by legally commingling their funds and lives. They’re together for the cameras, and maybe the cameras will go away soon and so will their relationship.

Cruise visited the Toronto studios of Much Music yesterday to appear on the show Much on Demand and promote his Nazi movie. He did the “Tropic Thunder” dance with host Matt Babel and also looked amused to encounter two guys wearing dress shirts and underwear like his iconic “Risky Business” character. In the audience at the show was a guy wearing a Guy Falkes mask, the standard disguise of the group Anonymous which is staging a global protest against Cruise’s Scientology cult. There’s a video of Cruise very obviously trying not to look at the guy in the mask, the meaning of which he is surely familiar with. Cruise would much rather be confronted by random questions about a reality star’s life decisions than have to deal with the reality of the cult he supports that destroys people’s lives.

Clearly he had never heard of Pratt but then Pratt and Usweekly are going to milk it for its worth.

Yeah, let’s all follow Fop Cruise’s advice. He’s clearly the arbiter of good taste.

only way i could see him being best man is in a ploy to pull speidi and their $$$ into Scientology. in that case, go for it, man. though i doubt even the scientolotards would take’em.

As much as I hate Scientology and all it’s cultish weirdness, Tom Cruise was doing what any normal person would do in that situation (talking about the video).

He literally gave the Anonymous guys a fleeting glance, acknowledged their existence, grimaced, and moved on with what he was supposed to be doing.

The video seems rather whiny…like they were pissed that Tom didn’t give them any more attention.

I’m confused about what you think he should have done re: the man in the mask.

The guy was making a peaceful protest, which I think is great. But should Tom Cruise have stared him down? Engaged him in an argument? Refused to appear on the show unless the man was removed from the audience?

It seems as if Cruise acted in as dignified a manner as he could. If I were on a TV show and somebody dressed to intentionally provoke me – say, in a Hitler mask or an Osama bin Laden mask – I’d probably do the same.

Okay I am not a beliver in religion and I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan although I do like some of his movies but I hate the way people always dump on Scientology who cares that he won’t look at someone who is dressed offensively to him!!!! he is just out there trying to entertain and if it was a guy dressed as a nazi or a klu klux klan member in the audience that he didn’t look at what would people be saying then???

This is what they learn at those Communication classes where it is a one on one with an auditor: to keep your concentration on what can only serve the purpose of the Church of Scientology.
It is a technique he’s been familiar with for many, many years.

I find it very brave and great that these Guy Fawkes masked people still come out and show themselves. If TomBoy isn’t showing it, it doesn’t mean he’s not troubled by it.
The ending message of the video is great too (look until the very end).

This is how you break down people who believe in such alienation: time and patiently remaining present…

I agree with CandyKay – It’s the right of the Anonymous guy to sit in peaceful protest, and Tom was right to just ignore him and keep the focus on his work. I don’t like Scientology and I think Cruise is a little nuts, but those Anonymous people scare the daylights out of me!! I saw the YouTube where they threatened the Scientology folks and I just CAN NOT agree with that kind of behavior!!

I thought it was Guy FaWkes, not Guy FaLkes?

Or, LOL, is there a special Falkes mask for Anonymous types?

And I stopped liking Tom Cruise about a day after Top Gun but his dance on the show was too funny! He almost looked — gasp — sexy!

And WHY exactly Tom have to look at him? So CB have what to write about?! And what kind of a head line is that anyway! Lame.

Yep, CandyKay, I agree with you. I can’t bear Cruise at all, but I think he handled the situation in a very dignified manner. He’s there to promote a film, not argue about the validity of his (bogus) spiritual path.

    Nice work Anonymous!

For those who don’t understand why Anonymous does what it does, start at these links:

Look up ‘scientology’, ‘sea org’ and ‘RPF’ on wikipedia. And look up the ‘scientology exposed’ videos on youtube.

There is a LOT more to scientology than the so-called ‘church’ wants you to know.

I don’t understand how this was “good work” by the Anonymous group. They are doing a good job in attracting attention to their cause but it doesn’t take guts to mutely stand in front of a celebrity at an autograph signing at a television studio while the cameras are rolling.

i really do not understand all the attacks on tom over his religion. i mean it is not like it is like Jim Jones.
in america people are free to worship how they choose. so what is the problem, what harm has that religion done?

  18. There ya go, heterosexual Tom Cruise, look away and all the hurtful truth, all the pipcketing, protesting, and human rights advocacy that’s addresses against the notoriously criminal Scientology Corporation you shill for will all magically disappear. Sure it will.

Good bloody grief. Hetereosxual Tom Cruise is frothingly insane.

  19. Sister says:

Lanette: PLEASE!!! Do some research. scientology is much, much worse and more dangerous than Jim Jones ever could have dreamed of being.

These people don’t care about what scientolgy believes in, they care about the horrible abuses caused by the cult.

    Start your research here:

Hopefully this will give you alittle more insight on the subject.

  20. Anonymous members who protest the CO$ have more courage than the many judges, gov’t officials, and the I.R.S. have had when confronted with the legal and physical threats by the cult.

Please, yes. Everyone should take just a few minutes to read up on this topic… it’s more of an eye opener than you’d imagine.

Hell yes it does. Scientology habitually follows home protesters, harasses them in various ways, endagers them and threatens them. A high profile protester like this one put themselves ESPECIALLY at risk for this. Tom has a zillion scilon handlers who eager to claim they ‘handled the flap’.

I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life.

Doesn’t matter how many times you say it.

It doesn’t matter how many “Links” you insert into madness.

It’s still madness. And the links to the “facts” are just more madness.

So what, informing people about the dangerous things a cult has done is “madness”?

It’s easy to plug your ears and sing lalalala when presented with information, which is what it sounds like you’re saying we should do. But it’s not the right thing to do.

Anonymous were there to show TC that no matter where he goes in public, Anon’s will be there too. Just a reminder that even tho TC can be kind and smooth talking, he is still a member in high standing of the world’s most dangerous cult, so be very careful of him.

Tom’s failure to respond wouldn’t be so significant if he hadn’t bragged about his “confront” abilities in that infamous video released in January. Tom’s behavior for the situation was probably appropriate, but it was inconsistent with his narcissistic self-adulation on his ability to handle “SP’s”.
