Enquirer: Daniel Radcliffe is boozing hard again, his friends want him in rehab

Daniel Radcliffe

Here are some photos of Daniel Radcliffe at the Whistler film festival (where he was celebrated for his talent) in Whistler, Canada on 11/30. He looks alarmingly good in those skinny jeans, right? I’ve never really been attracted to the guy (or skinny jeans in general unless they’re on Russell Brand’s legs), but Daniel and skinny jeans make a great combination here. He also looks relatively healthy and clean as well.

Behind the scenes, however, Daniel may not be as healthy as he appears according to a new story from this week’s Enquirer, which alleges that he’s boozing hard and got himself thrown out of a NYC nightclub as a result. Earlier this year, Daniel admitted to filming portions of the Harry Potter movies while still drunk from the night before. At the time, he hadn’t had a drink of alcohol since August 2010. So is he off the wagon, and does Daniel actually need rehab? Here’s the story:

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe has fallen off the wagon — and now friends are urging him to head to rehab before it’s too late! The former hard-partying British hunk had two hard-earned years of sobriety until he began hitting the bottle about a month ago, culminating in a drunken argument with a DJ at a New York City club, say sources.

“In my opinion, Danie’s back where he started,” a concerned pal told the Enquirer, “When he drinks, he gets carried away, and that’s exactly what happened to him in New York.”

According to the source, Daniel was “knocking back Jagerbombs” — shots of the liquor Jagermeister dropped in a glass of Red Bull energy drink — before the dustup that got him kicked out of the club.

“It didn’t take too long for a buzzed Daniel to start dancing around and becoming the life of the party,” the source said. “He’s not a mean drunk, but even happy drunks step over the line — and that’s what he seemed to do.

“Daniel was whooping and hollering and bullied the DJ into playing a Dusty Springfield song. When the DJ told him to chill, Daniel gave him a hard time, and that’s when the management threw him out.”

Daniel, 23, who shot to fame playing boy wizard Harry Potter in the popular film franchise, admitted he had a drinking problem and gave up booze in 2010. “He knows he shouldn’t drink, so this incident was an eye-opening relapse,” said the source. “Daniel is very embarrassed and even considered going back tot he club to apologize.”

While Daniel has vowed not to drink over the holidays, his close friends are urging him to take even more drastic measures. Said the source: “They want him to get into an established booze rehab — and cut out drinking for good.”

[From Enquirer, print edition, December 31, 2012]

Even if this NYC nightclub account is true, it doesn’t really sound like a really bad situation to me. In fact, Daniel would have gotten kicked out of a nightclub for a far lesser offense than Rihanna’s recent escapade where she didn’t get kicked out at all, but that was because she shouted, “Don’t you know who I am?” and then continued to dance on tables unabated. By the way, I’ve never understood why anyone, drunk or sober, would ever dance on a table. That’s just weird to me.

At any rate, it sounds like Daniel realizes he was a bit of a brat about a Dusty Springfield tune, and maybe this will make him sober up for another lengthy spell. He probably doesn’t need rehab — but he does need better taste in music.

I didn’t know he had a booze problem. Daniel pleassseeeeeee get some help. And whatever you do, don’t hang out with Lindsey Lohan. You are much too cute and sweet to ruin your life with alcohol.

It was weird… after the HP films wrapped, he admitted to it in a couple of interviews. I was peeved when he actually said that he filmed many scenes in one of the movies while drunk… because I watch the HP movies all the time (yes, I am a Potter junkie… and they fall into my ‘comfort movie’ category. Now I am always looking for ‘drunk Harry’ when I watch the damn things! I’ve decided that these ‘drunk scenes’ were during HP 6. He mentioned when he saw himself, he could totally tell… I think he said ‘dead behind the eyes’ or something like that. Now that I KNOW about it… I see many of those scenes in HP 6. I think it was good that he talked about it… let people know he was getting carried away with the drinking and decided he can’t handle drinking without it getting the best of him. Great. But I wish he hadn’t said that about filming while still drunk from the night before 🙁

Sorry for the rant. On the topic at hand… I hope he’s ok. If he did indeed fall of the wagon, hopefully he realized it right away and jumped back on!!

  2. andy says:

Really hope this isn’t true. He seems like a nice lad.

    • Liv says:

Doesn’t he split with his girlfriend? Maybe that’s why he’s losing it again..

    • Lisa says:

It is NOT true. Daniel hasn’t been in NY in months, he’s been filming in Canada all year, then in Ireland and now he is in England promoting his new tv mini series. We all could watch him last week on Graham Norton and this week on BBC, and he’s done written interviews and on radio, he is perfect.
Also, it’s well known he hates clubs and would never go to a place with DJ music. He has a very particular taste in music.
And his problem with alcohol was he drank alone in his home, he never went clubbing with friends. That’s why paparazzis never took a single pic of him drunk.
And he would not hurt even a fly, let alone a person. He is super shy.
He’s never been in rehab, because it’s never being a huge problem. He drunk like most teens in the UK do. He just decided he didn’t want to be like that, and stopped it. Probably went to a psychologist, that’s all.
If they are going to make up lies, at least get a little information first.

      • Arlene says:

He’s lovely person I’m sure, but he was wasted here in Dublin a few months back, absolutely wasted. Not just drunk, trashed.

  3. Kaboom says:

How much booze could possibly fit into a skinny short lad like him?

  4. Amelia says:

This makes me quite sad. I had him pegged as the only one of the HP trio who would really go places in terms of leading man status, etc.
That Russian doctor comedy with John Hamm looks bloody brilliant.
    Hopefully this is just embellishment.
As a side note, I don’t know how anyone can stomach Jagerbombs. I’m going to an end-of-the-world party tonight and an old friend is determined to get me to drink ’em. Blech.

    • Miss Kiki says:

I don’t know, I’ve never liked him myself. I’ve always thought he was a bit of a ponce, the kid that would get his head flushed down the toilet school. I’m going to watch ‘A Young Doctors Handbook’ before I totally write him off though.

I dunno about all of this though, liking a drink a bit too much and being an alkie are 2 very different things, going to work drunk when you’re a teenager and going to work drunk when you’re in your mid 30’s, very distinct differences.

Jagerbombs became an acquired taste during uni, now I love ’em!

    • Eleonor says:

I’ve watchet the Young doctor’s notebook! It is good (the beloved and always missed Leopold Leopoldovic!)

    • marie says:

drink the first quickly, then the rest are rather smooth. to me, the only thing that stinks about them is that after getting drunk and falling asleep-I only sleep max 3 hours and can never take a nap..

      • Miss Kiki says:

Yea I have vivid dreams at the best of times but when you throw alcohol and red bull into the mix, I’m convinced that’s what it’s like to be on LSD!

      • marie says:

I took a break from bombs for a while after I dreamed I was being chased by Pac-Man, and the pellets were giganitc gumballs.

    • Buckwild says:

Jagerbombs always tasted like cold medication to me. I prefer an amaretto sour for the holidays… Any other suggestions?

      • kc454 says:

They do taste like cold medicine. I had one about a year ago, and that was the first thought I had, cough syrup.

      • Sparkly says:

I love amaretto sours. Try a margarita with OJ, lime, & sugar instead of sour mix/triple sec & salt.

My husband also made a pretty good drink the other night by blending turtle tracks ice cream with kahlua, amaretto, and a bit of tequila.

      • gilly says:

That’s because Jaeger is actually cold medication, repackaged for drinking here in the US

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

@gilly: That is complete bs. Jägermeister is a cordial and not cold medication, and is sold everwhere including Germany as liquor.

  5. GoodCapon says:

Please don’t let this be true! I think he’s a good kid. Actually they all are (the HP trio).

  6. Summer says:

    10 points from gryffindor.

  7. Jo says:

Well it sounds like the Enquirer – which is a reliant source of information as much as all the other tabloids are – is trying to make him the next McCaualey Culkin. I’m not debating whether he was or not drunken and disorderly. Its portrayal comes off as worst thing ever kinda of thing. Sure it’s unfortunate and a bit disappointing but it’s not that shocking or appalling.

Fassbender got kicked out of an after-party for A Dangerous Method premiere and no one was all that appalled. I love double standards, I like them a lot. Fassbender seems to enjoy his drinks quite a lot if we go by photo assumption but he’s hot so will give him a break. We cut a lot of slack for the ones we like.

Also compared to some of his peers, Daniel seems to be a victim of the “too young, too rich, too popular, too soon” syndrome as far as the people go. Nothing as a beating down to take him down a peg or two. Compared to Emma Watson, he seems rather modest and considerate, he doesn’t give off douche vibes a la Gordon-Levitt, he’s bordering on introversion. Maybe he’s got a good P.R..

And sure it’s a matter of taste, but compared to Josh Hutcherson whose acting skills are as stiff as hardwood, Daniel emotes pretty well – I’m referring here in particular to Lady in Black. As for HP like with Pirates of the Caribbean where Keira was blasted by the critics, by nature of the fact they’re in something that cost hundreds of millions, they’re just a target. Those roles are obviously not Oscar bait as far as characters go, you can only do so much with the script you’ve got, if you get what I mean.

  8. Eleonor says:

If he didn’t talk about his problem with alchool I wouldn’t even suspected it, then I saw this post on the Dlisted
I hope he can clean himself again.

  9. Alice J says:

If true – at least he has friends helping him instead of enabling him.

The Potter trio seemed to have a solid support system. They were a nice change of pace from the “Hollywood kids”.

Hope that was not just PR. It would be great to see all three do well and not take the “lohan” express.

  10. j.eyre says:

I don’t know, sometimes a moment just calls for Dusty Springfield. Granted, those moments are undesirable, but you have to feed the need when you happen upon one.

Blame the moment, not the moment’s victim. We’ve all been there.

    • Marty says:

Yup! Personally I think Dusty Springfield kicks ass. She was the Adele of her time.

      • divax says:

Agree 200% Dusty Springfield was the best white female soul singer EVER. Would love to see this writer’s music collection

      • Meredith says:

+1. Her work with Hal David and Burt Bacarach in the ’60’s was timeless. She was great on the soundtrack of the original “Casino Royale” – a James Bond spoof starring David Niven, Woody Allen and Peter Sellers.

  11. FirstTimer says:

He’s got a movie coming up and yes I doubt this is true. It’s NE.

  12. dahlianoir says:

oh, Harry, say no to butterbeer !

  13. madpoe says:

This man brings out the cougar in me! *sigh*

    • Eleonor says:

I was thinking the same thing!
I am 31 (too young to be a cougar??) and he is 23, I know it’s not that much, but I feel a bit cougarish about me and DanRad.

  14. Louise says:

Something about this doesn’t ring true?

First he said he had been drunk and out of it during scenes in Harry Potter, but only he knew which ones. I’ve watched them all and he seems fine in them all, not “completely gone” as he claims in some scenes.

Next, an interviewer asked his co-stars and Rupert Grint in particular said it was news to him & actually laughed thinking it was incredulous. Emma Watson also looked incredulous when asked about it during a seperate interview than Ruperts, and also denied knowing about it and thought it must be a joke. Rupert added that Dan had been joking. It was news to him and he thought it sounded like an amusing joke. When the interviewer insisted Dan had said it, Rupert looked perplexed.

When you’re working that close with two actors they would know if you were an alcoholic, they genuinely didn’t believe it when they were told and both thought it was kinda funny and not true.

Next, dan said he had desired to be a drunk on purpose while in harry as he looked up to Gary Oldman who played Sirius in HP from yr 3 onwards. Except dan said it didn’t make him interesting or anything just pathetic. So he stopped doing it fast. He made it sound like he’d had a few drinks over a couple of nights, that’s all.

Now this, he’s a drunk again? I really am not sure what to make of it. If it’s true, why do so many stars who lets face it aren’t any more talented than the rest of us so are very lucky in every way, why do they drink so hard and take drugs? It makes no sense to me at all. They live very charmed lives. What can possibly be so sick in their environment to drive them to early self-distruct?? Clearly, there’s something very wrong with that industry.

If it’s not true, then it’s just the usual rubbish and gossip. Let’s face it we know nothing about Dan to talk about him, he’s v private and prob boring, so it makes him look more interesting or smth. Made up by his pr. A bit like the “pregnant girl” by Justin Bieber to get rid of the kid image. Either way, it’s all boring bollox 😀

    • Belle says:

I posted about this above as well..
I wasn’t all that happy when he said he filmed scenes in one of the HP movies while still drunk from the night before, because I love the HP movies (because of my kids… *cough* of course), and watch them all the time… they are some of my go-to ‘comfort movies’. Ever since he said that, I have been LOOKING for the ‘drunk’ scenes and I hated that! I feel like I found those scenes in HP 6. Of course, I would never have noticed a thing if I hadn’t been LOOKING for it. But he mentioned seeing himself in those scenes later, and how he could totally tell… something about being ‘dead behind the eyes’. Every time I watch Half Blood Prince, I am more and more sure that he was at the very least, a bit ‘dead behind the eyes’ in several scenes 🙁

Honestly, I think the other members of the cast either were told (after Dan decided to give a bit TMI) or knew it wasn’t really a good thing for the movies for people to know that Harry Potter was ‘drunk’ in some of his scenes… and tried to play dumb, and just avoid the topic. I don’t think it was a made up story. Dan seemed pretty open an honest about it… and it sounded like it wasn’t a long-term problem, but that he realized fairly quickly, he just couldn’t handle drinking without taking it too far… to the point of blacking out even, and needed to stop. There is no way that him saying he was drunk while filming some scenes… and that he can totally tell when he watches those scenes… was a good PR move. Okay to talk about having a problem, realizing it and taking care of it… but to tell the world he is drunk in some scenes of (what I assume to be) one of the movies… NO. Not a good PR move.

  15. Madriani's Girl says:

People dance on tables so more people can see them, thus garnering more attention than they would get if they did like everyone else and just danced on the dance floor.

  16. Annie says:

The NY post had this same story first. It’s true. And there were pics a couple of months ago of him peeing on the street in Dublin after drinking hard, and then partying hard with total strangers again in Dublin, who posted the pictures on tumblr and basically mocked him.

He definitely has a problem and I just wish he got help. Also, what friends? He’s had a very isolated life thanks to HP. It’s funny but we want these guys to be those characters forever and he probably hates HP. It’s not the same for Emma or Rupert who seem better adjusted – his face is on everything Harry. The entire planet knows him as Harry. It took his identity, his childhood, his adolescence. Now that he’s an adult it’s over and he’s not handling it well. Childstars will always face this issue.

Emma and him seemed close and she’s got a good head on her shoulders, I wish she reached out :/ Maybe Gary Oldman, his idol, who also had substance abuse problems can step in? I wish him the very best.

  17. Sparkly says:

This is such a shame. I hope it’s not true. He’s always been really honest about his problem, so I hope if it is true, he’s able to be honest with himself about it. I got to meet him once when he was on Broadway. He’s such a sweet guy. I wish him all the best.

  18. KellyinSeattle says:

He looks like he’s in 5th grade w/ facial hair; poor guy. Get some help!

  19. MJ says:

Those are definitely not skinny jeans! They look pretty normal slim-fit to me.

This guy seems so well-adjusted considering the level of fame and riches he’s achieved at such a young age. Hope he’s OK. He’s cute in a little brother kind of way.

  20. Christian says:

I’m allllllll about the Dusty Springfield! Not so much the Jager bombs. DRad and I should chill.

  21. jules says:

those are not skinny jeans, they are supposed to hug the body, those look like old timey unwashed Levi’s denim, the Best kind of jeans, and he looks great in them.

  22. Belle says:

I posted enough about this particular story in other comments above… so I will just add that I think Dan looks REALLY good in these photos 🙂

Love him in HP, but not a cougar kind of love. After the movies, for the most part, I didn’t think he was even overly attractive. But I think he looks damn good in these pics!

  23. dragonfly10192002 says:

Better taste in music??? Dusty Springfield is great.

  24. mom2two says:

These photos are probably about the most attractive I’ve found Daniel Radcliffe. Normally, he is not attractive to me…
However, he (along with Rupert Grint) is someone I do root for to succeed, he does seem like a nice guy. If his problem with alcohol is resurfacing again (and he has admitted to a problem before), I do hope he gets the help he needs.

  25. unclevanya says:

I feel sad for Daniel, but I feel sadder still for anyone who thinks liking Dusty Springfield equates having bad taste in music.

Someone else needs music rehab a lot worse than Daniel needs his rehab.

  26. blonde on the dock says:

He’s a really nice down to earth guy. This story is not true.

  27. Hakura says:

I hadn’t heard about the drinking problem. It’s so sad! Makes me wonder why they allow children to be part of the entertainment industry… I’m not saying all child-stars are trainwrecks as adults, but the percentage that are is disturbingly high.

It’s just too much for a kid, whether it be acting/singing/modeling/or beauty pageants (which i despise anyway). Should be against the law until a certain age, at the very least.
