MTV cancels Buckwild after Shain Gandee’s death, producer: ‘this will get ugly’

As you know, Buckwild star Shain Gandee passed away at the age of 21 in a tragic accident last week. Shain died in his Ford Bronco, along with his uncle and a friend, following a late night off-road mudding session. The vehicle got stuck in the mud, and the three died from carbon monoxide poisoning when they left the engine running to keep warm. The tailpipe had been covered in mud, slowing killing them. It was a sad story and some called it a cautionary tale about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, although that’s no comfort to the families.

As far as MTV’s culpability, they weren’t filming at the time and they weren’t promoting a practice that’s known to be deadly. Mudding is just good fun normally and it’s relatively safe in most cases. They’ve still decided to cancel the show due to Shain’s death, and have pulled the plug in the middle of filming the second season. In response to this news a producer really vented, on the record, to The Hollywood Reporter about how MTV sucks and this accomplishes nothing. He does have a point. This also reveals the kind of relationship MTV has with their show runners and talent.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter late Tuesday, Williams, who manages most of the cast members and produces the show, took particular aim at MTV for pulling the plug midway through filming on the second season.

“This is the network that has shows about teen pregnancy. They’ll stick by a show that allows you to abandon a child, but a kid dies by accident doing what he does for a living [mudding] and they cancel the show?” he fumes. “There’s something that smells of s— here on every level.”

News of the show’s cancellation comes a week or so after Gandee, 21, was found dead April 1 in his vehicle, along with his uncle and a friend, after going off-roading, or “mudding,” on a remote road in West Virginia. The local sheriff’s office ruled the death was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The network had suspended production as it considered whether to continue with the hit series, which was intended to fill a void left by one-time juggernaut Jersey Shore.

According to Williams, his Beverly Hills-based Parallel Entertainment along with production company Zoo Productions were informed Friday that MTV would be moving forward with the series. At that time, the network had four episodes in the can and was planning to shoot four more plus a special dedicated to Gandee to kick off the season. But Williams says MTV brass followed up Tuesday with a different message for the show’s producers: The network had opted to cancel the series instead.

“There was no explanation,” he says, still bewildered. He adds that the cast, which had planned to come to Los Angeles for the MTV Movie Awards this weekend, had not been informed of the news. The network is expected to formally announce the show’s cancellation Wednesday morning. A special, which was shot before Gandee’s death and was produced by an outside production company, is still expected to air.

Williams, who manages eight of the show’s cast members, including Gandee, does not intend to move on to other projects. In fact, he suggests that he will continue shooting the series and will look to produce a Buckwild film, which he would self-finance if need be. “My job is to protect these kids,” he tells THR, adding: “This will get ugly.”

This Williams guy has a point. I mean, I don’t think these shows should exist in the first place but MTV has some messed up standards. (Hence these shows existing.) Remember all that drama with Teen Mom 2’s Jenelle Evans? We stopped covering it after a while as she was such a drug addicted, chaotic mess. She later admitted that she was a heroin addict. Another one of their Teen Moms, Amber Portwood from the original series (which ended last year) is in jail for five years. Teen Mom has had domestic abuse situations (with Amber) caught on tape and no one from the show has intervened, they’ve just taped and aired them.

So in that respect I get where this Buckwild producer is coming from. There were rumors that Teen Mom 2 would be canceled because of Jenelle’s very obvious, very severe and most importantly very public problems, but there’s been no announcement yet. Shain from Buckwild died in an accident that no one could have predicted and MTV pulled the plug very quickly. They’re just covering their asses, which have been bare and waving in the wind for a very long time.

“This will get ugly” quote is slightly ridiculous. As an independent business, MTV can do whatever they want. I’ve never seen the show. But, any confusion as to why popular/good shows get cancelled always goes back to advertisers and which shows they are willing to shell out for.

    • Migdalia says:

True however it is obvious that MTV didn’t pull the plug over the weekend because of any advertising issues. I’ve never seen the show either I’m not sure of how entirely popular it was but what MTV did was whack.

  2. Reece says:

Or people could just not watch shows like this.

  3. Belle Epoch says:

This guy just wants money, right? If MTV paid off the participants he would have nothing to complain about? Am I missing something?

    • Migdalia says:

He might have a pay or play contract so MTV would have to pay out the rest of the season or whatever. I doubt the network just gets off scott free financially.

      • Lucy says:

Yeah I’m sure MTV will have to pay them out for the season or there is some sort of monetary compensation written in the contracts for cases like this.

      • Ron says:

It will be a pain in the ass. There is undoubtedly a pay or play contract. It is a standard business practice in Hollywood. This may be a bit more than that since the show was a relative hit and was picked up for a second season, The cast may only have a pay or play one season at a time. Reality shows don’t need multiple season pay or play because the casts can easily change. However I bet the production company does have a multiple season pay or play contract after season one. networks always will toss sh*t when these come up. I was cast in a show a number of years ago and had a pay or play and the show “went another direction creatively” and didn’t use me, however, once they sign a contract with you, you are blocked and can’t book anything else. So technically they owe you for your time even though they didn’t use you/you didn’t work. There were laywers involved and eventually they paid, But it’s just nasty business. I would think MTV would release this show and that they could pursue another network. CMT seems like a perfect fit.

There have been many people calling for the show to be cancelled as it is. This may be the “convenient” opportunity for them to do so for a “reason.” It is sad they died; people should be aware that mud and snow covering the tailpipe of a vehicle can be dangerous. RIP

    • Soapboxpudding says:

They were wasted drunk having left a bar around 3am, which likely had a big influence on their level of awareness and the outcome. That info has been omitted from most reports on this ‘accident’.

  5. littlemissnaughty says:

Oh, please. They cancelled it because this is simply sad and tragic but not sexy or exciting. They can’t sell it. The situations on Teen Mom (I’ve seen only a few episodes but it seems to be the same thing every time) are sad and tragic but they also satisfy people’s voyeuristic tendencies and let’s be honest, the heart of the show is sex. And how for these young girls, having sex ended badly. I’m not going to go on a feminist rant here but it’s mostly about a sh*tload of schadenfreude towards “bad girls”. That always sells.

    • kaley220 says:

Yes, the sad loss of lives kind of ruined the whole things. To me it would be awkwardly cringeworthy to have it go on. They could come up with with another show in it’s place. Like cancelling a football game after a tragic death, there are some things in life where respect must come first. I think they did the right thing, but wish well for all involved, hope the best for them. God bless.

  6. ZigZagZoey says:

I have to agree with him.
It was an accident and they were not filming.

It had nothing to do with the show at all.

That Teen Mom who is in and out of jail and doing drugs and getting married and divorced (and I have never even seen the show, I’ve seen it all on sites like these), is beyond sickening. But they keep that on.

  7. Mela says:

I think MTV is starting to change their views in order to cover their asses. For example, they are trying to end Teen Mom 2 as quickly as possible. While called season 3.5, this season they are airing was originally season 4. Teen Mom 3 girls were apparently selected very carefully to avoid another liability situation(ex. Jenelle and Amber).

I was surprised that Buckwild was approved for another season since it seemed kind of boring (and blatantly staged from even episode 1). Plus, didn’t one of the “cast” members recently get arrested? I think it was for drugs but not entirely sure. And I think there was something about the mayor of the town where they filmed wanting the show canceled too. (That story was more recent, around the time after Shain’s death.)

    • gg says:

The actual problem is this: these shows CREATE the Ambers and the Jenelles. Fame and false privilege become their top priorities which lead them to do ever more stupid things to stay in the press; i.e., the pr0n film with James Deen. Nothing good comes of it.

  8. gg says:

Please pull it. Nobody needs this crap tv.

  9. Kristine says:

Never heard of it. Never seen it. Not to sound callous but what a stupid way to die. It’s a shame since the kid looks young.

  10. lucy2 says:

This guy produced the show and managed all the participants? That seems conflicting, they should have had different representation than the boxx. By threatening it’s going to get ugly, it sounds like he’s more pissed about his cash flow ending.
MTV should probably pay out the season’s contracts since they did renew it, and then that’s it, I don’t think anyone is owed anything more than that.

  11. Skins says:

I think one season of the show was enough. It was mildly amusing, but with the kid dying like he did there is really no reason for another season. What were they going to do?, show them all driving around in the mud again all season?

  12. E says:

I’m from West Virginia. This kid died about 20 miles away from where I live. I’ve never watched the show & never cared to. But anytime any network cancels a trashy show glorifying trashy people, I rejoice. These deaths were SO unnecessary- it was 3am, they were wasted, the tailpipe was submerged in mud. I don’t care how drunk I get, I’d know enough to roll down a window (admittedly, I’ve never gone ‘mudding’ even living most of my life in WV). Anyway, I hate pretty much all reality tv shows, so I’m definitely biased against them all.

  13. Megatron says:

I’ll tell you what smells of s*** on every level- that slimy greedy Williams guy! What a hypocrite- “my job is to protect them”… ya right… its obvious by the shows content that he is doing just the opposite. He’s exploiting them for money, along with MTV of course. He’s just butt hurt because his cash cows are now milkless.

  14. Rae says:

I think everyone is missing the main point here – SOMEBODY DIED.

That’s a BIG DEAL. When a cast member of a reality show dies, they cancel the show. Period. Industry standard.

Comparing this situation to Teen Mom is comparing apples to oranges. This is not about MTV’s content decisions. It’s about the way the industry deals with the death of an active cast member.
