Heather Graham, 43: ‘I’d rather be happily single than unhappily married’

The last time I remember covering anything involving Heather Graham, it was that time that she claimed that she stays so young-looking by sleeping for 11 or 12 hours a day. Literally, she’s been asleep half of her life. Anyway, Heather is about to hit the promotional trail for The Hangover Part III, and so she scored the cover of Vegas Magazine. You can read her full interview here, and here are some highlights:

Getting to work with the “Wolfpack”: “It’s pretty awesome. Being the only girl with a bunch of guys, you get a lot of attention. Bradley is super cool and supportive. Ed’s so sweet and charm- ing. Zach is a unique and original person with this crazy comedy brain.”

After working with them, she tok improv classes at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre: “I wanted to understand more about what they were doing.”

She wrote her first screenplay, which she has secured financing for and plans to direct. “I wanted to write something that cracked me up,” she says of the romantic comedy about female friendships, sex, and relationships. Although Graham has appeared in more than two dozen films, she feels there’s a shortage of quality movies told from a woman’s point of view. “I’m intrigued by that,” she says, “and want to empower women the way I want to be empowered.”

She was brought up Catholic in Milwaukee: “A lot of times we’re brought up to please other people or take care of other people. It’s ingrained in our nature to be motherly. I had to step outside of that and go, ‘What makes me happy?’ I had to completely rethink that.”

She likes good sex: “I was taught to be demure, so it was harder for me to learn how to stand up for myself and go, ‘What do I want? What are my desires?’” When asked what exactly her desires are, she says with a laugh, “Good sex!”

Vegas Mag lists her reported boyfriends: Edward Burns, James Woods, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Russell Crowe, Scott Speedman, Matthew Perry, and Adam Ant. “I do have some great stories; I’ve definitely lived,” she says with a mischievous smile. “Maybe when I’m 80 and everyone’s dead!”

On marriage: “I’m not against it. I would definitely do it if I was in the right situation. I would like to be with someone I could settle down with and be with for the rest of my life. But I don’t feel like I need to.”

Choosing a mate: “I want to choose better for myself,” she says. “I think everyone I’ve dated has been great, but maybe not the most compatible match.” Potential suitors should consider enjoying yoga, meditation, traveling to Asia for her charity work with the Cambodian Children’s Fund, and marathons of Homeland, Girls, and Downtown Abbey. But make no mistake, Graham is just fine on her own. “I kind of feel like I dodged a bullet,” she says. “I’d rather be happily single than unhappily married. In the meantime, I’m having a lot of fun.”

She’s 43 years old and still working: “I’m so happy I get to keep working,” she says. “I admire people like Susan Sarandon. She’s older, and she’s really vibrant and alive.” Graham doesn’t feel as if she needs to conform to the stereotype of what her age means in show business: “I’m open to playing different kinds of parts. It’d be great to stretch, but at the same time I want to feel hot. I feel really young.”
No plastic surgery? “I have not ever opted to do surgery, because it’s scary. Maybe some people get it done and you can’t tell and that’s great, but I feel like it makes your face look weird. I think if you’re happy, then that’s the glow.”

[From Vegas Magazine]

Heather Graham strikes me as a very uncomplicated woman. She doesn’t have time for any complications… because she’s so busy sleeping, I guess. I mean, I guess “uncomplicated” could be a euphemism for “not bright,” but that feels kind of mean. She’s not the brightest bulb, but I doubt she’s the “dumb blonde” stereotype that people often tag her with. Anyway, it’s kind of startling to realize that she’s 43 years old. It’s also startling to see that list of all of her exes. Seriously, why can’t I remember Heather Graham dating Edward Burns? Or Benicio? Or JAMES WOODS?

Heather graham always has been 10 years older than me and now miraculously she is only 8 years?….I mean she looks beautiful for 45 but then again in LA so many women in their 40″s look great.

    • ahoyhoy says:

Aw, what’s 2 years? I don’t fault her, Hollywood is brutal. I don’t think Heather did it for her own ego.

If anyone ever discovers Catherine Zeta-Jones first, original published birth year—-now THAT’S a scoop!

      • LAK says:

CZJ’s birth year is easy to find. Go to the British birth registry website. It’s a mandatory government record going back over 100yrs that every British person has to register births. Record can’t be changed or altered. The information therein is open to the public. You can request CZJ’s birth certificate if you wanted.

  2. David99 says:

    Still very pretty.

  3. Lilo says:

    Wait, what? 43?

  4. brin says:

She dated Ed Burns for a while and Heath Ledger too. She seems a free spirit and quirky, I like that.

  5. Micki says:

…”“uncomplicated” could be a euphemism for “not bright,”

Complicated character doesn’t equal sophistication. It may also mean insecurity, low-self esteem, phobias…

I like her opinion of marriage. I’ve met some girls who gave me the impression they’ve married just to have a big party and wear THAT dress with a reason or in one case- to inharit and old china tableware…

    • lunabell says:

      +1

ETA She strikes me as someone whose life was more complicated early on and later became a free spirit. Isn’t she estranged from her parents?

    • Keeks says:

      this!

i feel like this is implying she’s stupid, but she sounds very grounded to me. if someone else had said this, there would be no implication of “not bright”.

    • jes_sayin says:

Yep.. how refreshing to have someone with a realistic view of marriage. She gets that marriage doesn’t = being happy or being “correct”.

    • Nina W says:

She sounds rather sensible to me. She recognizes she would rather do her own thing than be shackled in an unhappy relationship.

  6. Lamb says:

I would totally sleep 11-12 hours a night if I didn’t have an 8-5 job.

    • Boodiba says:

Me too. I constantly wish I could get paid to sleep. I’d work 10/11 hours a day quite happily!

      • Andrea says:

My boyfriend sleeps 10-12 hours per night and he is 36! He is a math professor and thus, only works about 20 hours per week. If he has to get up early for a class, he comes home and takes a 3 hour nap.

    • Barhey says:

Same! Everyone tells me I sleep too much but its just what my body needs 🙂

  7. marie says:

wasn’t there some tale of her and a casting couch? I don’t remember what movie it was for though.

  8. Christina says:

Either she’s been majorly photoshopped, or she’s had a lot of work done. Possibly both. Either way, I wouldn’t have recognised her if her name wasn’t printed next to the pictures.

And isn’t it a bit tedious when female actors always get asked about marriage and kids? Would anyone ask the same question of a 43 year old male actor?

    • Oops says:

yes I didn’t recognize her at first. And I agree with your comment about male actors, the journalists asked this question to only a few male actors and all actresses.

    • jaye says:

Photoshopped? Probably a bit. But she’s not unrecognizable. Maybe it’s because she’s older and looks different from her younger self?

  9. JennJ says:

    Love her attitude towards marriage!

  10. Barrett says:

Nothing wrong with not getting married, but god only knows if she is honest or spinning it. I remember her with Ed Burns. He seems like good husband material but like he needed someone less flighty like Christy Turlington. Lid for every pot.

  11. The Original Mia says:

    Preach it, Heather!

  12. Dedrie says:

Golly, what a miracle.. she gets her wish every year..

  13. dvz says:

She’s so wicked hot, without looking like Nicole Kidman’s nipped/frozen/tucked brand of barf. THAT SAID, she’s been 43 a few times now. As fabulous as she looks, she’s never going to get big roles, so why not be the Raquel Welch of her time and have people freak out over how incredible she looks for her (or anyone’s) age?

  14. jamee draper says:

I don’t think she’s stupid, I just think she is a terrible actress and plays the same hot slutty blonde in every film because that’s all she can do.

  15. truthful says:

I don’t know why I thought she was married.

  16. EG says:

I saw her in a yoga class in NYC a year or two ago. It was scary how skinny she was in person. I’m talking bones sticking out, obviously way too skinny for her frame and height. It really reminded me how unrealistic and unhealthy Hollywood’s standards are for the rest of us. She seems lovely but I think living in that world would drive anyone insane.

  17. mel says:

She is harmless…at least she knows who she is and embraces it. I’m not sure I think she had work done..I think she is heavily photoshopped. I remember her dating Burns…they were so hot together!

  18. bridget says:

She was with Ed Burns for a while, right before he got with Christy Turlington. And I can’t believe they didnt mention that she was with Heath Ledger too! Aside from the mother of his child, that dude liked older women. Heather definitely dated a lot, and I agree that ‘uncomplicated’ is a good way to describe her.

  19. Kelly says:

I love her. She’s awesome and has a great attitude. She sounds smart to me.

  20. TOPgirl says:

Pretty, unmarried..and i’m sure very lonely! At least lonely and happy!

  21. jaye says:

Well, she may not be a candidate for Mensa, but she doesn’t sound dumb to me.
