Katy Perry: ‘My mom thanks God every day for my divorce’ from Rusty Brand

Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s awful parents, Mary and Keith Hudson, are at it again. These two coast upon the goodwill generated by their daughter’s pop-star fame to sell their televangelical wares for the highest price. While they don’t mind posing with their daughter on the red carpet so that they can soak up all of the attention that comes with being “Katy Perry’s parents,” they just as often talk trash about her and say things about her being destined to go to hell because of her saucy image and the fake-lesbian song (“I Kissed a Girl”) that started it all. It was only a few weeks ago when Keith doubled down and preached to a congregation about how Katy was a devil child” that needed healing. Now Katy herself has revealed that her mom thanks God every single day about the disappearance of Russell Brand from Katy’s life. Uh, mom? STFU:

Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s mum thanks God each day for her split from Russell Brand.

The singer – whose parents Keith and Mary Hudson are strict pastors – said: “I thank God every day for having made us all the same way and I pray for anyone who fights for freedom of speech.

“I’m pro-gay marriage and want equality between genders. My mom thanks God every day for my divorce.”

Katy added: “Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to listen to non-religious music. Madonna, my idol, was considered worse than the devil.”

[From The Sun]

One has to wonder whether, at this point in her life, Katy merely shrugs her shoulder at her parent’s obvious antics. Is she truly bothered by this nonsense, or is she just like, “Whatever, mom and dad.” She seems like she’s over it, but I still feel bad for her for having to endure such an embarrassment.

Speaking of the devil Russell Brand, here he is departing yoga class on Monday and killing my lady boner with that Miley Cyrus post-pilates bun. Rusty’s even wearing an “Anarchy in the UK” t-shirt just like Miley’s been doing lately. Conspiracy.

That is just a horrible thing for a mom to say. Russell seems like a genuinely good guy.

    • Jules says:

      How faux Christian of her.

    • m says:

According to the bible, divorce comes with more consequences than being gay, so Im suprised that her parents dont throw rocks at her every chance they get.

      • Organic says:

Uhh no. Jesus lays down situations where divorce is acceptable including adultery on either side.

I am sorry but if you must bring the Bible into this atleast establish the facts first. And remember just because these people call themselves Christ followers, it doesnt mean they are.

The Church doesnt encourage divorce (who does?) but does allow them based on new Testament readings. Really conservative Churches may not allow remarriage until the divorced partner is dead but those Churches are rare.

    • chaser says:

Ummmm, her mum might have said it behind closed doors (still not ok) but Katy is the Ahole whom stated it to the press.

      • Jaye says:

That comment seemed out of context of what she was saying. I’m not sure what her point was at all.

      • Nina W says:

I agree, it seemed rude but also out of context, I wonder if the journalist took liberties with the quote.

  2. Shade says:

Amazingly, Rusty seems to be the sanest of them all.

    • aims says:

Russel came out the winner here. I also think it tacky to bad mouth the ex.

    • Liv says:

Her mom should have better prayed for a break-up when she was with John Mayer!

And I don’t get the context – what do gay-marriage and a marriage with Brand have to do with each other??

  3. Leigh says:

I think HE’s the one who dodged the bullet… I don’t find him attractive, but everything I’ve read about him and heard from him suggests he has a fairly good head on his shoulders and is pretty focused on living well and staying focused on his recovery. Plus, I still think he’s pretty hilarious….

    • Cali says:

I loved his wacky humor but after reading his books, I will adore him forever. He’s made of awesome.

    • Miffy says:

      This.
Despite his image he seems like an intellect and comes across as genuine. He’s also of course exceptionally funny.

When he got together with Katy Perry I was a bit disappointed for him. He needs to go gay and get with Stephen Fry. They would be my personal Will and Kate.

  4. Micki says:

I guess they prayed day and night for her meeting John Mayer then.

  5. Jayna says:

LOL I thought her parents don’t believe in divorce. It seems like they throw their principles out the window when they don’t like the son-in-law. At least Russell had grown as a person and kicked his biggest demons. Now she’s with a man-boy man-whore, who is a misogynist.

  6. Charlotte says:

They’re pleased they no longer have to carry a dictionary around and ask him to repeat himself because they can’t keep up with his ability to form independent and intelligent conversation.

  7. Anna says:

OMG. I am shipping Miley and Russell now! RB really won me over with his post-divorce press tour, where he straight up refused to talk sh!t about Katy and their divorce, even on Howard Stern! Seems like the opposite of all the slime that Liam Hemsworth’s PR team is throwing in Mile’s direction lately.

  8. jinni says:

Why did she feel the need to share this? She’s as bad as Olivia Wilde. As far as I know Russell has been a gentleman about their divorce when he could have been crude and dished about her.

    • Katie says:

Every time Russell opens his mouth about her in any way that could be construed as negative, Katy’s PR plants stories about how hurt she is by his words and how she’s considering legal action. She has no problem speaking negatively about him, though.

    • Cel says:

Katy is beginning to sound like Swifty – they sound off about the men/boys they have dated/married but god forbid those same men do the same to them.

      Very immature and bratty.

  9. Itsjustblanche. says:

He seems like a decent enough guy, although a bit of a booty hound.

  10. Itsjustblanche. says:

He seems like a decent enough guy, although a bit of a ladies man.

  11. Katie says:

I want to like Russell Brand because he seems like a charming guy, but I don’t like his dirty rockstar look. I’m ashamed of myself for finding him attractive in these pictures, though. I don’t know if it’s the bun (lol) or if I’m in need of some coffee, but go on with your bad self, Russell.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Katy thinks just like her parents. Her whole image was created by her record company. Her God-fearing parents should have spent more time stressing the sanctity of marriage than banning non-religious music.

  12. Erandyn says:

When I look at her oh-so-camp dad, my gaydar goes *bwaap bwaap bwaap!*

  13. honey says:

Russell is awesome. He was slumming with Katy.

    • Miffy says:

He really was. He’s lucky he has such a ridiculous sex drive otherwise they’d have had to converse a lot more than they presumably did. The marriage would have been shorter than Kim Kardashian’s.

  14. Simply Red says:

The things parents say in public oh brother.. Her parent coat-tailing behind needs to go sit down somewhere..

Russell is quite charming and cool guy.. He has grown unlike some I know

  15. epiphany says:

I wonder what bible her parents read? Guess they never happened upon this, ” For I hate divorce”, says the Lord, the God of Israel.’
    Malachi 2:16

  16. Willa says:

At least he can legit sport that shirt. Miley not so much.

  17. Annie says:

I like russel. He’s real and he’s honest about his issues, and his book was great. I doubt he didn’t warn Katy about his ways to be honest. Katy probably wanted to piss her parents off and have a wedding but probably never took Russell seriously. I think it speaks volumes of Russell’s character that he didn’t talk smack about her after the divorce or that he didn’t take a single buck from her. That is class, people, even if he dresses like a dirty rockstar.

Besides, his entire past doesn’t make him a bad person. Even with everything he’s still a much better person than John Mayer.
Let’s never forget that awful Playboy interview that cost him a long hiatus.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Since we’re comparing the two, Brand also seems like much more of an intellectual than Mayer, who seems emotionally and intellectually challenged. Rusty really strikes me as a smart and interesting dude.

      • Annie says:

Yeah, I think he’s cool and very grounded. He’s very aware of the mistakes he made in the past. He’s conscious of what he needs to do to be a better person, and he tries to be better. That requires a certain level of maturity and accountability. Addiction and depression can really hurt a person, but that doesn’t make them bad people. John doesn’t seem to think he’s done anything wrong in his life. That awful Playboy interview showed his true colors, his blatant misogyny and racism, and I don’t see how Katy can publicly say something like “my parents were glad I divorced Russell”, as if John, rumored to have slept around behind her back, is any better.

  18. Liz says:

I would be totally supportive of a Russell and Miley union!

  19. menlisa says:

Why did Perry have to mention that?
Meanwhile Mr. Brand continues to take the high road.
    Kudos to him.

  20. LaLa2 says:

People seem to judge Brand based on his looks but if you really listen to him in interviews and his talk show he’s actually a really cool guy.

  21. Adrien says:

Russell may rub people the wrong way but he’s a damn good, insightful writer. I think he is better read than seen. He hangs out with great people like David Lynch and the DalaiLama and is now on a mission to help addicts. Your loss, Katy’s mom.

  22. grabbyhands says:

It’s okay, Mrs Perry-Russell Brand is probably doing the same thing.

  23. valleymiss says:

I don’t mind that her parents said this, but I mind that Katy repeated it to the press. Completely tacky. Russell made pains to not talk smack about Katy on Howard Stern, AND he didn’t take any of Katy’s millions in their divorce. She’s a b*tch for continuing to speak ill of him. Karma, my dear, comes in the form of John Mayer.

  24. Mel says:

Maybe Katie made it up? Who knows if its even true

  25. The Wizz says:

Yes it’s obvious, Russell and Miley are really the same person.

  26. DreamyK says:

Wow. What a bunch of bullies. She writes crappy songs about him and now her parents are trashing him in the press? Russell has kept his silence because you know, he’s classy like that, unlike Katy and her parents. They all need to go away from the public eye for a very long time. Preferably forever.

  27. Helvetica says:

I fail to see the connection between “equality between genders” and “thanking God every day for her divorce” from Brand.

    Huh?

Russell has remained SO classy about their split, never saying a bad word about Katy. And she shoots off about how thankful her parents are for the divorce. That should have been kept private. Completely. Because it comes off as her slagging Brand in a passive-aggressive way which means his value just went up in my opinion, and hers just went down.

Nothing worse than someone talking smack about their ex so publicly. It’s gross.

Russell went on Howard Stern, of all places, and did not say a bad thing about Katy. Most people wouldn’t have been able to do it. Howard has a way of bringing out all the slime/smack talk about RB stayed above it. That speaks to his character. He really is a cool guy.

  28. NerdMomma says:

She said that in the context of talking about equality between genders. In context, she’s not slamming Russell Brand, she’s saying there’s gratitude that divorce is an option for women. Isn’t she?

    • Izzy says:

Don’t think so. The quote says her mother thanks G-d every day for her divorce. Specifically.

    • anne o'neame says:

This is how I interpreted it, too. She’s contrasting her views on gender equality and gay marriage with those of her parents. By saying she thanks God for making us all the same way, she’s drawing attention to the crazy stuff her mom thanks God for.

    • jwoolman says:

I don’t think she’s slamming her ex, either. She was pointing out a difference between herself and her parents. Her mom thanks God every day for her daughter’s divorce. I can’t interpret that as meaning Katy does the same, actually she’s using that to illustrate how far apart she is from the parentals.

  29. Holden says:

Her parents need to grow up and get with the program.

  30. I'm Want To Live IN New York says:

These are my parents!!!!! I feel for her.

I wonder if her parents prayed for them to split up? If they are this happy now, what were they like during the marriage? Before the marriage?

“Dear God don’t let our little money and attention maker marry this Satan like creature” ???

  31. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

If Russell and Miley ever get together, can we call them Mussell?

  32. bluhare says:

I wonder what Russell’s mom thinks about the divorce from Katy. Probably the same as Katy’s parents, but more because she could never figure out what he ever saw in that manufactured pop tart. I know I can’t. I think he was titmatized.

  33. TheOneAndOnly says:

Low class, and like Swifty, Lady Gaga, KP was fine when she just came out, but fame, money, and more fame, and now she thinks she’s an “artiste” No honey, you’re just a crappy little immature pop star warbling someone else’s songs; What she doesn’t realize is that even her 8 yr. old fans will grow up and move on, leaving her in her self-absorbed kiddie world.
Agree bluhare, who is more manufactured, Kp, Swifty, Beyawnce, Lady Gaga or are they all from the same generic mold?

    • bluhare says:

Excellent question OneAndOnly. I have no clue. You forgot to add Rihanna and Nicki Minaj to the club too. None of them have much talent and all have a bunch of flash and dash to cover it up. I might have omitted Gaga from them a while ago even though she’s basically a Madonna clone, but I think she’s shown she’s just like everyone else. Puffy and nothing but air.

      • Miffy says:

Now, as much as it pains me, I will defend Lady Gaga here. The lads over at Cracked wrote an article about how underneath it all she is actually talented and had a video of her performing Edge Of Glory with just a piano and the girl can seriously sing (and play her own instruments).

In Lady Gaga’s case I think it’s that she’s SO manufactured that it covers up her talent completely. She could have been successful just relying on her singing abilities but dressing like an idiot and being the self-appointed god for teenagers who feel no one understands them was the quicker route (which IMO makes her the bigger disappointment).

      • bluhare says:

Miffy: That’s exactly the reason I would have kept her off the list, but instead of channeling those talents she just does weirder and weirder schtick.

Her duet on Tony Bennett’s last album was amazing. I wish she would do more work like that. Until then, she’s in my pop tart club, only maybe slightly less saccharine than the rest of them.

      • Jaye says:

I agree with you Miffy and Bluhare, Lady Gaga may be an obnoxious twilight zone, but she is very talented. The over-the-top costumes may very well be her expressing her creativity, but they also detract from her talent.

      • TheOneAndOnly says:

        Thanks for the interesting comments;
Two things, Rufus Wainwright, referring to Lady Gaga, said she really has only 3 or 4 good songs – I hear the edge of glory at the casino I frequent, but how many other songs do you hear with any frequency and none are iconic like, say, Voodoo Child; second, when she was at NYU her band covered songs like zeppelins dyer maker (it’s on youtube), she should have gone that route, but being remade as a pop tart brought quicker success.

  34. KellyinSeattle says:

    What’s with her dad’s outfit? Pastor/rapper with a gold chain ??
I , too, think Russell is super smart and super, super funny. He would “clean up” rather nicely, too, but I like him just how he is.

  35. teehee says:

very typical of a mother– to hate the ‘partner’ of the perfect offspring. Thats sooo common….

  36. Miffy says:

Aren’t the divorced longer than they were married at this point? Doesn’t she realise by now that bashing Brand while he continues to take the high road just makes her look worse (and he more like a gentleman)?

C’est la vie, the relationship didn’t work out. Get over it.

  37. jilly says:

Look at Mr. Perry in his skinny jeans. LOL!!!

  38. Fancyamazon says:

Wasn’t her mother the one that was having inappropriate email flirtations with Russell before he and Katy got married? I have never thought of these parents as being very Christian. They may be “prosperity gospel” in fact but spout things that fundamentalists would say. Unsure, but I wouldn’t trust them either way. Hypocrites, the both of them.

  39. Mandy says:

    Men do not wear buns!!!!!

  40. Norman says:

700 Club all the way. Dad calls daughter a devil and mom thanks God her daughter divorced this less than ideal christian or heathen Russel Brand. Not exactly “love thy neighbor as yourself”.

  41. Bette says:

I’m skeptical about this quote – seems like it’s taken out of context and perhaps the part about “thanking God every day” was said partly in jest. Not to defend KP’s parents AT ALL, since I think they’re creepy, but I remember how there were LOTS of stories and pics suggesting that her parents LOVED Russell when they were married, and that they were disappointed when they split up. Remember, KP’s dad was supposedly still texting with RB all the time for months after the divorce? Russell himself used to talk about how despite the surface differences between them, he got along great with her parents and that they were really cool. He even said that on Howard Stern post-divorce. So, while obviously the parents’ opinion on him could’ve soured due to the divorce, I don’t think there was ever any major hate or drama between RB and his in-laws, in general.

BTW, I love that so many of the commenters here are pro-Russell! That’s awesome and a rarity on most blogs, where people usually can’t see past his image.

A few people have said they like him despite not liking the “dirty rock star” look. Well, I will unashamedly say I love that look! I grew up loving dirty rock star types. Dirty, as in scruffy rebels, not literally dirty. (Russell is actually extremely clean and near-fanatical about personal hygiene!)
