Colin Farrell is back on the A-list

Colin Farrell is back on the A-list after his charming appearance and Best Actor-Comedy win at the Golden Globes. He’s been MIA through many of the past years in celebutainment, and it’s a welcome surprise that Farrell seems happier, healthier and all-around better at this place in time.

His win for In Bruges was surprising - even the nomination was a surprise, since the film came out in Feburary, and by Farrell’s own admission, kind of came and went with good reviews and a small box office. Farrell’s co-star, friend and co-nominee Brendan Gleeson was at the same table, and seemed genuinely thrilled with Farrell’s win. Even the epically morose Ralph Fiennes (co-star in In Bruges) broke into a smile when Farrell’s name was called, and Fiennes stood up to embrace Farrell.

First you shocked us, sniffling through your presenter’s script and then explaining, “I still have a cold. It’s not the other thing it used to be.”

Then you made us shmoopy after your surprise win for your role in “In Bruges.” “I’ve never been so at peace with being ignored in my life. It’s seldom that you get a script that’s as simultaneously profound and beautifully comic and wonderfully painful, filled with delightful remorse, and, more than anything else, the sweetest, sweetest redemptive qualities. And that was ‘In Bruges’ for me. To work with [director Martin McDonagh] was a dream. And I love you.

You know, I’ll ride Sally’s coattails and start talking about love a bit because at the end of the day, I think what we all do in some way, shape, or form — I hate to wax lyrical — is about love. Curiosity is love. It’s ignorance’s nemesis. And so thank you, Martin. [Costar Brendan Gleeson], I love you dearly. And this is at least half of yours. I’ll cut it when I get off stage, and you can have a hemisphere.”

From The Los Angeles Times

I really liked that Colin admitted after he sniffled that “It’s not the other thing it used to be.” It was a nice moment of shared realization of how crazy and addicted he was to drink and drugs, and how far he‘s come. Colin looked good last night - a bit too thin, but I think the excuse is still that he lost a lot of weight for that Bosnian war film he did last year. As far as I could tell, Farrell didn’t bring his girlfriend Emma Forrest. His beautiful sister was his date, and she joined with his whole table in looking thrilled with her brother’s win.

  3. God - he looks 10 years younger since he cut his hair! From what I read, it was a very lovely speech he gave. (I think as a matter of policy Colin only ever brings his mother or sister to award shows if anyone).

I think I can say with absolute certainty that Brendan was truely delighted for Colin. Having been a fan for years I’m very aware that he has an enormous sense of social justice and always comes across as a thoroughly decent man.

The Golden Globes seems to bring the best out in some - I placed myself well and truely in the Jonathan Rhys Meyers camp after he won for his Elvis biopic; he came straight off the stage and was onto the Morning Ireland radio show as he “had to give the guys back home the exclusive” - the presenter was genuinely touched. He would have been bombarded by the media in Hollywood but chose to remember his roots.

But back somewhat on topic - no offence Col, but Brendan for the Oscar!

  4. Ach, his wee tartan vest… How can you not love him? He was so fantastic in ‘In Bruges’.. a real surprise. His speech showed him to be the articulate, sensitive, intelligent man he is.. Much like Mickey Rourke, these two went a bit off the rails into self destruction town but they both came back with humility and the goods to back up their names. I sincerely hope they both stay healthy now that Hollywood will once again be knocking on their doors.
    Yay Colin!

  5. In case you missed his speech, his reference to “I’ve never been more at peace with being ignored in my life” was when he pleaded with his agent not to push him for the role because he wasn’t sure he could do it justice…

It’s funny but I really felt that same sense of “give the lad a chance” emanating from Brendan last night as his character in the movie.

  7. Yummy pics, really looking good here. so great to see this little gem of a film get the attention it deserves.

Ditto, Doodahs, re Mickey R. I’m so happy for him it’s like I won the award myself!

Mairead - “..but Brendan for the Oscar!”, guess we need to start our novenas now. (O/T, have you seen Garage? Pat Short is astonishing and just about breaks my heart. Pure excellence.)

  8. Rawr. He looks like the Colin that I was crushing on years ago again, only this time with a sense of hygiene!

He looks friggin hot, and the movie for which he won is pretty damn good as well.

  10. LOL geronimo, I usually detest the “aren’t we marvellous” bullsh*t this sort of thing brings out in the Irish, but I’m so beyond thrilled for him, Gabriel, Martin and Brendan.

btw, geronimo - you’re right re the novena! Which saint should we be praying to? I’ve only got St. Anthony as my default (LOL)
Arragh muise a few decades of the Rosary, and we’ll be grand. Mind you, if I had my way he’d have gotten one for being a disgruntled Womble in Breakfast on Pluto (one of my favourite films)

Re Garage - y;know, I haven’t. It was on telly a few weeks ago and it seemed excellent. Anything Anne Marie Duff is in (Mrs. James McAvoy to most of you) is bound to be quality. I’ll tell you what film to avoid though - “Kings”. I’ve never been more disappointed in a film in my life.

  11. It was a real treat to see Colin acknowledged for his nuanced performance and his speach was so heart felt and honest, a la Mickey Rourke, it made me feel good for him. In Bruges was something I came upon after our video guy recommended it. I’m So glad he did, and this is where I second Mairead for Brendan as the oscar choice, I think he was absolutely brillant. Loved the bromance he and Colin have going. Yeah Colin, yeah Mickey, Kate and the woman that won for the quirky chic movie.

  12. Mairead - Anthony it is! Was considering Jude but that would be implying that it’s a hopeless case/lost cause before we’ve even begun. Or we could try St Clare, patron saint of TV? (Have not seen Kings so will avoid but you must watch Garage. You really must and yes, I am insisting!)

  14. Well, we (along with our new recruit Ter) are helping Brendan “find” his award, so it’s fitting. We’ll have to bribe St. Anthony though. I’ve probably got chocolate coins somewhere after Christmas - do they count?

re Garage - I believe you! I’m sure the play is fine - and to a certain extent the film could be to, if you don’t know Connemara or understand anything about the people or the language. But the characters did seem to be the worst stereotypes of the Irish in London - and the Irish was f*cking atrocious nevermind that none of them bothered their arses to do the accent properly, even when speaking English. Ok… I’ll stop. The only reason it comes to mind is that I remember it being talked about for awards when it was released - it doesn’t deserve it.
