Kate Upton covers Vogue Brazil: total knockout or kind of cheap?

Kate Upton

Kate Upton covers the July issue of Vogue Brazil, and she looks marvelous if slightly uneventful. What do you think of the cover? Kate herself has tweeted that it was her “favorite job,” which I suppose means that this job was way better than her recent experience of frolicking topless on a horse while creepy perverts snuck iPhone footage.

As far as a cover goes, this one is rather restrained by Upton standards (the cleavage is obviously there, but the girls are not thrust out front and center), and Kate looks quite beautiful with slicked back hair and smokey eyes. She’s also working the hell out of that outfit. This only adds to her Vogue portfolio since she’s already conquered the Italian, United Kingdom, and stateside varieties of the magazine.

You may have also heard that Kate is also trying her hand at acting. Here she is on the set of The Other Woman with Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz. I love Kate, but I don’t expect her movie career to go any further than that of, say, Brooklyn Decker. Cameron is always so classy, ain’t she? Nice finger.

Yuck that top in the first photo. It just shows “fashion” hates women with boobies. That was the only thing they could find for her boobies? So unflattering. The coat and skirt not so bad. I could have sewn a better top for her.

    • Pinky says:

Kate Upton is really kind of average, isn’t she? I like that she’s curvy, but that’s about it. And how can a woman with so much cleavage not be fitted with a bra that actually fits? How did they find a bra that was TOO BIG for her? There’s been so much hoopla recently about how the bottom of the bra needs to lie flat on your ribcage, etc. Amazing.

      • V4Real says:

Not trying to be mean but she does not have nice legs at all.

      • Amanduh says:

V4Real: Just because you say, “I’m not trying to be mean…” doesn’t make it NOT mean, lol. If you were truly “not trying to be mean” you wouldn’t have said anything in the first place. Own your b!tchiness.

      • V4Real says:

@Amanduh saying someone legs are not nice isn’t really being mean or bitcy. Now saying she has legs like a bargain based streetwalker is being mean. Thank you very much 🙂

      • Amanduh says:

Ummm…justify it however you want, but insulting someone’s appearance is mean…and b!tchy. All I’m saying is don’t try to hide it by saying, “I’m not trying to be mean…” because not only are you being mean and b!tchy, but you’re also lying, too.
No need to thank me :))

      • mytbean says:

It’s a mystery as to where this woman’s calves are stored. Her legs are like elongated cones. I don’t dislike her shape but it’s not the traditionally pitched ideal of beauty, that’s for sure. 😛

      • JoanofSnark says:

VReal: Why dont you post a picture of your own legs and we’ll see how amazing they are

    • carol says:

I disagree – I think she looks old hollywood glamourous!

    • You are all wish u looked like her!! says:

She is beautiful. It is nice to see a Vogue cover model with curves. There are so many anorexic woman in Hollywood. Kate looks great!!

    • Raquel says:

Vogue is probably so used to shoots with twig-figure girls that the staff was probably caught off guard by the fact Upton needed a bra at all.

  2. Dawn says:

I love that cover and I don’t see anything cheap about it. How I wish I had her legs…gawd they just go on and on!

    • thetruth says:

Why would you wish that she has chicken leg.

    • hunter says:

Ummm… her legs are crappy and shapeless. Cameron probably has better legs than her (she does).

      • Dommy Dearest says:

I’d rather have Kate’s body than Cameron’s shriveled up leather skin. She is not aging well at all.

    • Pandy says:

I agree – I think she looks great. Look at the muscle tone on her legs. Envious!!

  3. Bubulle says:

I think she’s a terrible model but I’m impressed with her hustle : Vogue us, Vogue Uk, vogue Italia , and now vogue brasil

  4. Maya says:

I just don’t see her as a high-fashion model. I think she’s very pretty and her body is obviously fantastic, but she always has same expression in every picture and her photo spreads are always kind of boring and underwhelming. I don’t know why the fashion world is trying to make her ‘happen’, because I just don’t see it.

    • Bubulle says:

She’s not HF, she’s the Blake Lively of modeling world.

    • siobhan says:

Kate is proof that Vogue isn’t about high fashion. They are about putting celebrities on their covers.

    • emmie_a says:

I agree Maya. I really like Kate — She’s super cute and her body is incredible and she seems to have a great personality/attitude — but she’s not a fashion model. Her pictures always come off as try-hard and yes, cheap.

    • Sumodo1 says:

+3. She is a modelling personality, not a haute couture model. Claudia Schiffer she is NOT. Kate has one facial expression, and most of all, does not know yet how to use the light/lens to her best advantage. NEXT!!!

    • mena says:

ITA. Kate just doesn’t pull off “high fashion” very well.

She seems to have only one look – which is “Girl Next Door Beach Babe”. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Models like Marissa Miller and other SI models have enjoyed long & successful careers doing just that.

But a model like Cindy Crawford could pull off a “Girl Next Door” look and also pull off a “Couture Vamp” look too. And while Kate Upton is a very pretty girl, I don’t think she’s at the level of a Cindy Crawford.

    • RocketMerry says:

      Agree 100%.
She’s a catalogue model. Which is just fine.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I feel like most models have the same expression anymore: vacant or glare.

There is very little emotion or smiling anymore…which is part of why I love Kate. Her smiles in her American Vogue shoot were infectious! I think when they don’t let her smile, it dims her light a bit.

    • Turtle Dove says:

      Maya, I agree with you.

I admire this girl’s hustle, but she is not high fashion. I know people snark on Gisele, but that woman can pose the s**t out of a picture. Kate, although pretty, is too generic looking to be a HF model. We’ve seen her look before – that pudgy faced, baby doll look was big in the 50s, but isn’t modern in an aesthetic way.

  5. lady mary. says:

so many legs in that last pic…. looks strange .,nvr thought of kate upton as a gr8 model anyway ,why dont they use some real ,strong women with dynamic personalities and hell of a vocation and brains not and tatas or vadges, or as samantha said in SATC
‘giraffes with breasts” for vogue cover pages

  6. Mrs. Darcy says:

She’s a very pretty girl but I have to agree I don’t look at her and think “supermodel”. But then I came of age in the era of Christy Turlington, I like my supermodels to look like beautiful aliens! Agree the outfit is terrible, if they are going to put her on the cover they should just go for it and embrace why she is famous, trying to downplay it makes her look more ordinary.

    • carol says:

christy turlington is f*ing beautiful, probably one of the most beautiful women that ever lived. Where is the christy of the current generation?

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

I know, they all look alike to me now, it’s a very boring era for models imo! I think it’s telling that a lot of the 90’s models are getting more and more campaigns, these girls have no personality. Last month’s (UK)Vogue was pretty much 50% Kate Moss (I mean good for her but someone else could get a campaign now and again), and Tilda Swinton (awesome in the Chanel campaign),and the rest random celebs in bland campaigns selling watches and jewels. All of the models seem interchangeable to me at the moment. I actually wouldn’t mind them using a girl like Upton and celebrating her curves, but they won’t. Well maybe Tom Ford would but who knows what he’s doing…sorry fashion rambling!

  7. bns says:

Wow, that’s a nice cover actually.

Much better than her US Vogue cover.

  8. Nev says:

Nah. She’s not a fashion girl.

  9. Sachi says:

I don’t know. The hair, outfit, and makeup are great, but I’m not getting any vibe from that cover. Is she trying to look sexy and sultry? Is she trying to look fierce? The body language screams confident but the face looks “uncomfortable”.

    It’s all in her eyes.

Her eyes are empty. Her face is always the same open-mouthed, dead eyes, blank expression in most of her editorial photos. You never know what emotion she’s trying to convey.

  10. paige says:

i like that ANTM has made everyone an expert on fashion models!…see that cover-yup kate can do haute couture…she’s got that kelly emberg or kim alexis thing going on…(major ‘supermodels’ from the eighties-look em up)…

    • siobhan says:

I have never seen ANTM. I don’t think it is a tv show influencing many people’s opinions on Kate. It’s her lack of facial expressions and limited posing makes people not like her as a model.

    • mena says:

Kelly Emberg & Kim Alexis were very successful models, but they didn’t do haute couture either.

They did a lot of magazine covers & got major contracts like Revlon & Cover Girl, but I don’t think either model was ever the face of a fashion house like Chanel or Dior or Yves Saint Laurent. I’m not even sure if they did much runway work.

      • paige says:

well, this is a vogue cover and both kelly emberg and kim alexis did DOZENS…
as far as being the face of a fashion line – advertising fashion was very different than and most all the girls were expected to do high fashion. it was part of being a real model. this is before they had categories like ‘california beach girl’…the photog was the one with the clout (and the editor). the model was not the star.

      • mena says:

If the times were so different back then, why compare it to now?

As far as what’s happening with Kate Upton right now, her management team did a great job turning Kate’s “not good enough for Victoria’s Secret” drama into a bunch of high profile magazine covers.

But a model’s management team can only do so much.

If the public ain’t buying what a model is selling, it ain’t gonna go much further. If the comments on this post are any indication, not many people are buying Kate Upton as a high fashion model.

      • paige says:

        mena
def not trying to ‘compare’ the times to now-i had to school you on the inaccurate ‘face of a fashion house’ comment…i just mentioned she had a ‘kelly emberg/kim alexis vibe’.

and lucky for kate, the indications on this site don’t effect her…she’s on vogue and everywhere else, and will be again….somebody likes her. (i’m not really a fan). but i i guess you can’t stop talking about her…

      • mena says:

Well Paige, to school you back on what you wrote only a few hours ago:

“…see that cover-yup kate can do haute couture…she’s got that kelly emberg or kim alexis thing going on…”

Kelly Emberg & Kim Alexis never did haute couture, so you comparing Kate to them does nothing to help your argument that Kate could do haute couture.

But it’s nice that you’re staying current with what’s happening now by using the Jonah Hill defense.

      • paige says:

        Mena
        guess you missed the point…
        i’ll go slow…
is Kate in haute couture on the cover of vogue?
        that would be ‘yes’
did kelly emberg/kim alexis do vogue (dozens of times) -also wearing haute couture?
that would also be a ‘yes’
furthur point i made-kelly e/kim alexis always did high fashion and runway and everything else…(you can easily reread)
        but cheers…(knock off the coffee-maybe?)

      • mena says:

Paige, you’re the one who’s making this personal and you’re owning this argument about as well as Kate Upton is owning a high fashion look.

No doubt, you’ll take that as a complement, but I’m sure even you can figure out that it isn’t.

Get off the high horse, maybe?

  11. merski says:

Who cares if her movie career doesn’t last?! She already got to make out with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. What else is there?!
Good for you girl, good for you.

  12. GeeMoney says:

I don’t see why people are making such a big deal about her. Not pretty at all.

  13. mar says:

I like her. She is not the prettiest but she has a girl next door approachable beauty

  14. truthful says:

I think she looks better fully clothed, not necessarily in this outfit though.

    its not too bad

  15. heidi says:

She’s got a sturdy and shapely figure but she vibes trashy for sure.

  16. Roxy says:

She’s a hottie!!! I’d rather see someone with a hot body and cute face than a little boy, hard faced, stick figure on the cover of any magazine. Just sayin!! 🙂 🙂

  17. Happy21 says:

I think she looks great and I’m glad they didn’t put her boobs front and center. I don’t like the top they did put her in though.

I really like this girl. More and more. I’d be surprised if she became a full-time actress but you never know. Maybe she can actually act? Stranger things have happened!

    • Emily says:

She should for sure transition into acting!
One can’t be a swimsuit model one’s whole life! Tits that big don’t stay that high forever.

  18. Emily says:

Why do Americans get haughty about a finger gesture?
    Get over it…

“blahblah so unprofessional, classless, tasteless, immature” Hows about who cares?

Don’t come to Australia! You might drop your pearls with all the stuff we get up to down there.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

Because we take offense to everything. Our government issued sensitivity chip works fantastically!
      😛

  19. bujalnorski says:

She will have a highly successful transition into acting, she has all the right cds on her side and the talent to boot. They love her so stop the hate!

  20. RobN says:

I don’t care much about high fashion one way or the other, but I am struck by how much prettier she is in casual wear when she isn’t showcasing her breasts. She looks so much younger and fresher when it’s jean shorts and a shear top than when it’s just all boobs, all the time.

  21. Georgia says:

Those ladies look like they’re having so much fun in every picture I’ve seen from the set of that movie

  22. Lilac says:

Nothing cheap about it. Very glamourous. She is totally gorgeous and I love that the healthy looking, curvy blonde bombshell is back!

I’m so tired of waify, sad-looking brunettes who are “interesting” looking.

Give me beauty or give me death!

  23. rachel says:

I love love love her. She is 100% adorbs. And I can’t remember the last time we had a woman with a chunky torso along with big sloppy natural breasts as a model, let alone budding movie star. Its beautiful. Calls to mind the gorgeous blond starlets of old time movies. Long may Kate reign! That being said, this isn’t her look. She is breathtakingly cute in very natural or naturalistic settings–outdoor lighting, subtle make up,showing her real smile. This cover doesn’t do much for her. Team KATE

  24. Trek Girl says:

She’s bland. She’s nearly average. The only thing not average about her are her breasts, and they’re not that interesting.

I wonder what the women of Celebitchy who wish for her body look like, because they can’t possibly look so bad that they really think Upton’s body would be such a big step up. She’s just above average, people — that’s all.

  25. Denise says:

She doesn’t quite pull off high fashion, but it’s not awful. Cameron could be her mother. I had no idea Kate was that tall, Cammie’s wearing heels and Kate’s taller with trainers?

  26. Lisa says:

She looks kind of like Edie Sedgewick on the cover.

  27. real says:

Kate looks incredible on the cover. I don’t dislike the top. They were going for subtlety and glamor not in your face. She looks very haute.

Her candid shots are awful. She has a nice body but her legs are a tragedy. Her legs have no tone and look awful close to Cameron’s. Someone mentioned Cameron has leathery skin. Only in her face. Her body is great and her confidence is refreshing.

Back to Kate…Kate is a lovely young lady. She is not unique and that is her appeal. She seems accessible and many see themselves in her and that’s why she’s so loved. Now if she worked on those legs…lol.

    Love you girl!

  28. Vera says:

She’s gorgeous and makes for a good hot model, but doesn’t translate into a high fashion model.

  29. Amelia says:

Kate is cute but her face is unremarkable. Her legs have no shape. She’s all boobs.

BUT… Stick her next to Cameron Diaz and she looks great.

  30. JGL says:

I have to say – a lot of comments by women

    I’m a man – She’s got great boobs and I’m golden
