Tom Hiddleston will voice Captain Hook in ‘The Pirate Fairy’ & he sings too

“Captain Hook is Shakespearean…” – Tom Hiddleston

Do you think sometimes that Tom Hiddleston looks at Benedict Cumberbatch and thinks “That should be mine”? I do. Just days after we discovered that Benedict Cumberbatch will be doing his first animated film for DreamWorks’ The Penguins of Madagascar, now we find out that Tom Hiddleston will be doing his first animated voice work as well. And in typical Hiddles fashion, Tom had to grab the microphone and talk and talk and talk. First, let’s hear about the project:

For the sixth installment of the little sprite’s solo adventures, Tinkerbell is getting a new hook. Zarina, the newest fairy in Pixie Hollow, will be voiced by the voluptuous Christina Hendricks, playing a seafaring, smart, swashbuckling fairy who creates a new type of Pixie Dust that gives her the power of all the other fairies’ talents. Tinkerbell (again voiced by Parenthood‘s Mae Whitman) must find a way to return things to normal.

Zarina also keeps some sinister company.

Disneytoon Studio’s latest Tinkerbell movie, The Pirate Fairy, turns the community of Pixie Hollow on its head when dust-keeper fairy Zarina snatches the Hollow’s essential Blue Pixie Dust (insert your own Breaking Bad joke here, please) — and joins the pirates of Skull Rock.

Among them is a young rogue named James, who is better known by his future title: Captain Hook. None other than Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, will be the voice behind the young soon-to-be villain. “Cabin Boy James is educated and polite and energetic and charming and attentive. James and Zarina are steady on. They’re like best friends … for a while,” said Hiddleston. “It’s all an act. He’s covering for his ruthless and cunning nature.”

Hendricks chimed in: “Imagine the betrayal!”

Director Peggy Holmes announced the casting news Friday morning at D23, Disney’s what’s-coming-next expo and celebration. “We start to bridge Tink’s world of Pixie Hollow and her world of Peter Pan,” Holmes told the D23 crowd.

The Pirate Fairy further complicates things for Tinkerbell and her pals when they discover that all their respective talents have been switched — forcing them to walk in each other’s little pixie booties.

Hiddleston told D23 he was excited to be a part of a Disney film because he idolized The Jungle Book and sang “The Bear Necessities” in an audition once. Naturally, the crowd cheered until he was forced to sing some of it live.

Disneytoon Studios also announced another Tinkerbell film, The Legend of the Neverbeast.

In that one, due in spring 2015, director Steve Loter said Fawn, the nature fairy from Tinkerbell’s world, rallies her friends to not fear the white-furred, sharp-toothed creature that comes to inhabit their land. It turns out Ruff, the eponymous creature, looks fearsome but has a big, sweet center.
The other film highlighted by Disneytoon Studios was Planes: Fire and Rescue, a sequel to the high-flying race adventure opening in theaters today. It will focus on the elite team of machines tasked with stopping wildfires. Dane Cook will return as Dusty Crophopper, and Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen will play a tanker plane named Dipper, who has a crush on him. (And since she’s probably twice his size, that’s a big crush.) “You’re smaller than I thought,” her character says in a preview clip shown to the D23 crowd.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Yes, I guess they don’t care about SPOILERS for the whole Captain Hook twist…? That seems like something they would want to keep a secret. Anyway, I want to prepare yourselves for the video. This is like the MTV Movie Awards all over again. No one can stand in between Tom and a microphone and his public. Christina Hendricks barely got a word in edgewise.

Cheeseball. Ham. Typical Tom. I mean, if I’m being nice… I’ll say that it’s good for his career that he’s so willing to fly anywhere to promote future projects. And he IS legitamitely enthusiastic. And I’ll also give him credit for that bulge he’s packing in those tight pants. Mm. But still… did we need a song? No, we didn’t.

So embarrassing. Unfortunately, I still love him. Ugh…make it stop.

    • ncboudicca says:

haha, it’s true…and I can’t help myself, either. I think I’ve been hypnotized by the tight pants.

    • j.eyre says:

He makes it tough for us Drogonflies, doesn’t he? We almost have to work at keeping any flame lit.

    • SIxer says:

The complex motivations of Captain Hook? Can he not just say,”Love Disney. This will be great fun and I hope the kids love it.”

      • LilyRose says:

He could. But that would be a two-sentence answer and Hiddleston speaks in García Márquez paragraphs.

There was one interview during the War Horse promo where Hiddleston took two minutes to answer a question. His co-stars where brief but the journalist ran out of time to ask another question. And Hiddles even says “you only asked two questions.” That made me laugh.

      • Yep says:

        @LilyRose

“But that would be a two-sentence answer and Hiddleston speaks in García Márquez paragraphs.”

        LOL

    • Samtha says:

Someone needs to stage an intervention for this shit. He’s so adorable otherwise; this stuff just kills the lady boner.

  2. T.Fanty says:

    Cumberbudget strikes again.

And I don’t think that’s his dong anymore; I think it’s his dignity trying to escape down his left pant leg.

  3. Miss RiotBelle. says:

I am not a big fan of him,but something tells me that he is just very very genuinely sweet and enthusiastic about his job and he still can’t believe his success. That being said, this is embarassing.

  4. Birdie says:

Sorry, but I was a bit embarrassed for him. I actually like him, but he just loves to talk and his microphone. And him singing… no.

  5. Maddie says:

I have to ask if any one saw him and his porn Afro in Wallender? Kept saying to myself he needs to get rid of the tight curls.

  6. Colu says:

I love Christina Hendricks’ bob haircut! It looks so beautiful on her, but does this mean Mad Men isn’t going to start filming anytime soon?

  7. flower says:

He knows what the fangirls want and apparently he knows not underpants. Its hilarious how it’s always there like an advertisement, lol.

  8. Spooks says:

I think he’s really really attractive. Too enthusiastic. Embarrassing, but endearing.
Then again, so cold “hot” guys like the Hemsworths or Fassbender leave me cold.
Edit – This was a reply to a comment that apparently went away.

  9. Miss Melissa says:

Tom, since you are reading this, good for you on getting work.

You are talented, but you are aiming in the wrong direction.

Stop playing the game and start being true to yourself.

Go back to the start, darling, starting with the kind of representation that got you Thor in the first place. Don’t let anyone tell you how to do you. Start being real.

The play’s the thing, sweets. You are on the right track with the play. Follow that path for a while.

    • T.Fanty says:

You have to think that this is tied to the Marvel/Disney contract somehow. They must *own* him to have him dancing like an organ-grinder’s monkey in this crap.

      • Anna says:

Oh please. Like he has to be forced to do any of this…

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

Dear God. *Headdesk* I cannot in my wildest dreams picture any scenario in which TommyAnnE would choose this straight to netflicks dreck over any viable option. He’s not poor– he doesn’t need the money. This is *not* going to lead to anything better. It is not Madagascar or any one of those other Pixar flicks that have the possibility of becoming a classic. It… It… Had to be a contractual obligation. Please dear God say that he is sobbing into his pillow over this embarrassment.

      • LilyRose says:

I suggest we start our own Hiddleston management company! Our mission being to guide our little dragonfly through the grand chess game of self-concious celebrity career advancement. Where the quality of the work and performance will be of top priority. Where photoshoots for fashion mags are once in a blue moon and where attending premieres are allowed only if he stars, produces said piece of theater or film. There’s no need to do a press line if you are there to kiss ass (which is acceptable. Networking after all…)

Those in favor of theater work say “aye”

Those in favor of an HBO/BBC miniseries or movie say “aye”

The floor is open to suggestions

      • tubular_trekkie says:

        @LilyRose

        🙂 lol

I’d love to see him work with the RSC. He’s *always*(!) letting everyone know what a Shakespeare buff he is, so I would have thought that would be a fantastic choice for him. Maybe he only wants to stick to London theatre though?

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

Word has it that RSC locks you into a three year contract, and you have to be in Stratford. Hard to do that and be in Hollywood.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

        @C&C

No, I can’t see him ever decamping to Stratford to do it. Call me a cynic, but I think he wants the fame and adulation of a very high profile acting career (preferably in Hollywood). I don’t believe for a second that it’s solely about the quality of the work in and of itself. And I’m not too sure what I think about that TBH. It’s sort of his Achilles’ heel in my view.

      • Sixer says:

@LilyRose – I think we should abandon all hope of TommyAnne ever having, or wanting, a career of which dragonflies could be proud.

It would be best for everyone if we just abducted him, took him to the Thornfield basement (attic’s occupied), fitted a permanent ball gag so he can never speak nor sing again, and made liberal use/misuse of the tight trousers and their snake (before the snake decamps for pastures greener and more alluring).

      • LilyRose says:

        @C&C and Tubular

Maybe the West End? The big names seem to move from stage to screen with relative ease. Helen Mirren comes to mind. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that UK actors are allowed to be nimble and move from one medium to the other. In Hollywood, theatre is prestige, TV is the gutter (AMC and HBO notwithstanding) and film is where everyone wants to be.

@Sixer- must he be gagged though? His voice is like buttah.

      • T.Fanty says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. HBO. Remake of I, Claudius. TommyAnne. Togas. Highbrow.

        *drops mic*

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

TomyAnnE as Caligula? I could get behind that. I will never forget John Hurt dancing.

      • LilyRose says:

@Fanty I wrote you something down thread about Coriolanus.

He should go to Broadway a la Huge Ackman.

    • Resnictem says:

@Miss Melissa, I love it when Dragonflies read my mind.

  10. Tish says:

    Dear Lord…
    Isn’t this franchise direct-to-DVD???
At least Cumberbatch’s voice gig over at Dreamworks will get a theatrical release and it’s an A-list franchise of the studio.

I have a feeling that the rumors about him and Chastain surfaced because he wants to be in Crimson Peak. I’m sure they have been casting at that time for there were already rumors about Stone and Hunnam’s involvement. Too bad…

    • jammypants says:

What I don’t get is why this article blames Tom from copying BC. Er, they already released the trailer for Pirate Fairy so more than likely they recorded this ages ago. BC hadn’t even started recording Madagascar yet.

      • Miss Melissa says:

Yes, my niece is into that whole thing, and there was a preview in 2012… without him of course. I bet this was already done.

      • Miss M says:

@jammypants: This! The Cumberb*tches are just showing why they call themselves b*tches! 🙂

  11. iheartjacksparrow says:

I was at the animation presentation and got to see him sing live (don’t know if it was an act, but it didn’t seem like he really wanted to sing). He was also at the Saturday presentation for the live action movies (for Thor) but said up front he would not be signing. And I got to see Angie Jo who was there to present the Maleficent clips. She is so beautiful in person, and got a standing ovation.

  12. MissMary says:

TBF, not only is he under a five movie contract with a Disney owned franchise/company, voice work is a good way to keep an actor’s name out there and in the minds of casting directors and producers.

I get the feeling he’s not loving doing this and it might be a “well, you need to do SOMETHING”/mortgage payment sort of role.

  13. mimi says:

Big fan of his so this is exciting news for me.

  14. the other Kate says:

He’s talking and talking and talking, because he loves his voice as nuch as I do 🙂

  15. c'mon says:

yeah no, nothing can make me click that video! this guy is sexy and seem like a nice person but too often gives me second hand embarrassment.

like is he manic or something? does he have bipolar? I have hard time believing this guy is for real. even if he really believes the stuff he says (everything being shakespearian…) it comes off as fake and weird. he is smart, he needs more self awareness. I dunno, something about him rubs me wrong.

    • Miss Melissa says:

Not clicking is the correct choice.

Like Loki’d, I had to stop and walk away in the middle of it.

  16. lisa2 says:

    So basically he sang…

ME ME ME MEEEEMEMEEEEEEM ME ME ME ME MEE

    ME

  17. Leah says:

he can’t sing at all but he loves himself lol… so much second hand embarrassment.

  18. LilyRose says:

    Miss Fanty! Miss Fanty! *waves*

    Over here!
Sorry to make such a scene and interrupt your special “sessions,” but I saw something. I watched Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus, and um… I don’t know how to say this… You see, he… he… he cries. He wept. Tears! Tah eeers! I had to rewind it to be certain. There it was as he is kneeling before Virgilia, Volumina and Valeria. A single, stoic, salty tear.

I’m so sorry for interrupting as you must get back to your guests. Tommyanne mustn’t be left unsupervised with a pole. So I leave you to it.

    And Gerry was fantastic.

  19. Browniecakes says:

@Iheartjacksparrow – was that you who yelled, ‘I love you Tom’ at Sat.’s D23 before I could? He’s ready to take the stage again as the star, he takes big bows and hogs the mike. He introduced Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. It’s on Marvel’s site. Saw the Thor 2 trailer where he tells Thor he will destroy Earth and appears to chop off his arm. Another movie plot? All the bigs do voice overs – Helen Mirren was just in Monsters 2.

    • iheartjacksparrow says:

@Browniecakes – Sorry I took so long to respond, but I was off to D23 early this morning again. That was not me yelling. He was funny and cute, but I’m not a fan of Tom’s and not a fan of superhero movies. I thought they did way too much Marvel on Saturday, but those are the only live action movies that seem to be making money for Disney at the moment.

  20. Lacy says:

Oh I can’t click it, I just can’t!! *misery wail*

TOM! I don’t know what to say! Why does Cumberbatch get consistent work (and I love my cumby!), while Tom seems to be floundering? He got SO much attention from Loki- I remember reading blogs/articles form critics saying he almost stole the show, and the Avengers wouldn’t have been as great if Tom hadn’t sold Loki so well!

But now! Now I feel like he’s still out there trying to figure out what his next move is and it’s… not going well?

    Ah well. 😐

  21. Willow says:

I don’t hate him. But I do hate his foaming at the mouth fan girls who hype him up to be the next big thing and he certainly is not. And he really is not good looking at all.

  22. Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

I have not had the heart to click on that video. I think it would make me cry to see my dragonfly acting like an organ grinders monkey. The wings they do droop. And even the self conscious trouser snake that smacks of product placement will not cheer me up.

Did he really say Hook is Shakespearean?? TommyAnne: i know you are reading this. This is third tier tinker bell kiddie cereal you have signed onto, that will only be seen on Netflix. Have some dignity.

    • SIxer says:

“Product placement” just made me spit out a perfectly good mouthful of wine. Too funny!

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

It is a product! He knows perfectly well that there is a Tumblr blog dedicated to his over eager trouser snake, and that this will get attention!

It’s a uniform now: Blue suit from a designer, white shirt, and (for the fan girls) no manly knickers.

Sort of like some thing Steve Jobs might do (I think this is his intent) only kind of ridiculous.

      • Sixer says:

You know, C&C, you’ve rescued my day. It was all going so well. A morning spent observing the national sandcastle competition at the beach (yes, embarrassingly British), an afternoon with friends, food and wine and NOT being the designated driver, plus ‘thletics on the TV and a pleasurable perv involving the arms of one Usain Bolt.

Then. This. TommyAnne in tight trousers (good) and TommyAnne singing and aggrandizing Captain Hook whilst alltherestofiting (not good. Very not good).

Now I have product placement of a trouser snake and all is well with the world again.

    • LilyRose says:

No he didn’t. I think it’s a riff on the “Loki is Shakespearian” comment. It made me laugh. And I think this project was probably in the works from some time. I wouldn’t read too much into it. It’s another credit. Bigger things will come his way.

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

The year is drawing to a close, LilyRose….

      • LilyRose says:

Don’t remind me, I’m unemployed too with the odd job here and there. But I am optimistic (and there’s no more booze at home) that things will work out. I’m bored as well. Back to Hiddles, the Oct-Jan stretch will have him busy with promotional work, rehearsals and such. Maybe next year he’ll be booked solid working on as many projects as he is offered.

  23. Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

Luke: “Are you all right? What’s wrong?”

Obi-Wan: “I felt a great disturbance in the Force… as if millions of dragonflies suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.”

  24. Sarah D. says:

I love how Kaiser hasn’t jumped on the Hiddleston train. She feels similar to the way I feel about him.

I just don’t get the hype about him at all.

  25. Browniecakes says:

DisneyToon (direct to DVD Disney animated features – the fairy movies) is run by John Lasseter. Doing this gets TH on Pixar’s radar.

  26. LadyLupton says:

I watched it with the sound off for the bulge. Judge away.

  27. tubular_trekkie says:

I’m not sure I can steal myself to watch it. It’s difficult to explain why.
Even when he’s coming across as hopelessly goofy/dorky/overenthusiastic (even a tad embarrassing), he’s still *very* attractive. I have no idea how that works…

Can’t say I’m too enthused about this latest role he’s landed. There still doesn’t seem to be much going on for him work-wise aside from Coriolanus. Puzzled am I, to say the least.

  28. EscapedConvent says:

Look at the still shot of the video in the second window—Hiddles in near ballet stance! Is he ready to break out a pirouette?!

    Somebody’s a ham in a Dragonfly suit.

  29. GeeMoney says:

I like Tom, and I think he’s cute. Don’t get the obsessive fangirling that goes on over him though.

Don’t get it for Cumberbatch either (although I love love love him and secretly wish that he was mine – oh, the irony). I feel like people should find other things to do with their time (talking to you, Tumblrers)… and get a life.

  30. Paris says:

Oh Tom you are such a try hard. Maybe if he got better roles he wouldn’t have to be focusing on trying to get people to like him.

  31. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2389293/Daniel-Day-Lewis-takes-dip-sea-holidaying-Steven-Spielbergs-yacht.html

Has anyone seen these? Good Lord, Daniel Day Lewis is a beautiful man (despite those tattoos)….and he’s 55! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 55 year old look like that, ever!

Sigh, I don’t know who to choose from-Liam, Daniel, or Ralph. Maybe a foursome? I swear I’m going to make it my life’s mission to find myself a Daniel lookalike….or maybe a Liam lookalive (in ALL ways…..and, cough, *parts*)

    • LilyRose says:

Those are some really awful tattoos.

    • Kate says:

DDL…10/10 would bang with or without the tats. That man has aged VERY well. God, he’s a genius, too.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Hehehe, I would have plans to move to Ireland, once I graduate, if only another, beautiful, tall, Irishman didn’t need my comfort…..ah, the sacrifices one makes for others 😉

  32. seVen says:

he makes my biscuits tingle. that is all.

  33. Portia says:

That clip is edited to only show the Tom Hiddleston parts. Christina Hendricks did speak quite a bit about her character, Zarina, too. So he didn’t hog the mike or speak any longer than he normally does (which is long by average actor standards).

Anyways, career wise I think Tom Hiddleston wants to be an award winning, respected, and highly sought after actor. That’s what he’s aiming for but no matter what his other fans say, The Pirate Fairy is a big, big step down compared to the greats he was working with previously. I worked at Disney Studios and anything Pixie Hollow related is pretty low on the totem pole even in the Disney world. It’s a specifically little girl targeted product and a 180 from the giant Marvel and its Loki. Money wise, it’s a steady revenue because of Tinker Bell but nothing that great compared to how much the Disney Princesses rake in. If he were voicing a new Disney Prince then yeah, it’d be a good career move but not this.

I don’t know who his L.A agent is but from the pictures and videos the guy looks like a real lightweight compared to the other successful agents here. He even dresses very blink and miss. Luke Windsor, as a PR agent, looks more serious than Tom Hiddleston’s L.A agent.

Hiddleston doesn’t have typical movie star looks but he has the features and talent to play some fantastic memorable characters that would win him awards. But with the sparse Hollywood on his resume, he really needs to live in L.A for that and seriously get an upgrade from his current L.A agent. Even PR isn’t going to cut it if he’s not physically present in Hollywood and pursuing good roles. That is if he wants that. If he wants to be a theater actor, well, then there’s definitely no better than London to hone that art and skill. In that regards, he has more than enough connections and talent to be a big theater name.

    • LilyRose says:

      @Portia,

He does seem hungry for celebrity status, which is fine. I don’t begrudge him his ambitions. Being a higher up celeb opens up better roles, better pay and if he wants to move towards directing and producing these opportunities present themselves as well. I can’t get too worked up about his career trajectory, though it is fun to offer him career advise *waves* *hi tom!* but he is getting more media exposure. I don’t think Pirate’s Fairyland, or whatever it’s called, would have gotten as many media hits as it has if it weren’t for the names involved. I think he is closing the year with interesting projects, whether Close Enough and Black Wings Has My Angel start filming next year or not. He’ll have enough media exposure and hopefully interest from directors and producers who want to work with him.

You guys (or some people here) give his PR too much credit. His agent and agency are the ones that need to hustle and get him auditions and in front of directors and casting agents. PR is there to protect the client and pitch him to media outlets for interviews, arrange promotional schedules etc. Everything else you see him do is probably Tom and his agent or manager.

      • Portia says:

LilyRose, there is nothing wrong with him wanting success and fame. I commend him for being ambitious. I’m not sure I agree with Pirate Fairy being a sound choice though. The media exposure is minor compared to what he gets from a Marvel supervillain. The target audience is little girls for Pixie Hollow products, they care more about Zarina and Tink than James Hook. Unless there’s a new Peter Pan movie in the works and Hiddleston is the new Hook, Cronenberg and Aronofsky and Haneke won’t offer him roles based on this PH movie.

And I agree with you, I don’t know why people hate Luke Windsor or give him so much credit for Hiddleston’s career. He is just PR. He’s just there to make sure Hiddleston doesn’t say something off-color or that he’s not asked a non-PC question. That’s why he’s there on the red carpet with him all the time. It’s his job, and so far, he’s doing a good job. But he is in no way calling the shots or helping Tom Hiddleston and his agents make career choices or advising him on which auditions to go to.

If he moves to L.A, he’ll have a better time networking. He can’t expect he’ll get the Fassy deal of living in London and getting choice Hollywood offers. Fassy had Steve McQueen as the director who really gave him his break and he is a spectacular, gritty director. Hiddleston had Joanna Hogg and while she may be a good director, she’s not a great one. Compare the performances of all in Hunger and Shame to the performances of all in Unrelated and Archipelago.

Sorry about the extremely long manifesto. I’ve been lurking for a while and couldn’t help putting in my two cents about Hiddleston after this fairy debacle. I am a fan and thought he really was headed for brilliant fame but now, it’s like he’s plagued with bad luck. From Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen to Pixie Hollow? Not even something Disney Pixar like Brave or Finding Nemo, but Pixie Hollow? And no, Lasseter doesn’t care about Pixie Hollow, he only oversees creative direction as in story and bridging worlds. He’s not making casting calls. I really hope next year fares better for Tom Hiddleston in Hollywood.

      • Tish says:

Wasn’t Close Enough delayed? Isn’t that why he is doing the play? And that film with Paquin has been in limbo for a while. Honestly, I don’t think it’s happening anymore.

He needs a film deal (or even an HBO series) stat or he will have a very dry 2014.

      • LilyRose says:

        @Portia
Hey girl, hey. Spielberg and Allen were small parts. I still think it’s too early to call his career as falling or something. It’ll take him a while to find his place in Hollywood outside of the Marvel universe. I don’t think he should be too picky. Fassbender was in Haywire. Channing Tatum was in a movie called Fighting. I don’t think he’s above doing work in lesser Disney franchises. Cumberbatch, a person he gets compared to a lot, did a lot of period dramas, movies, series, bit parts here and there. Cumby did radio at one point. He was a jobbing actor before Sherlock and the parts that have followed. If he can keep an open mind about the parts he gets offered, he may do some interesting work.

As for the Joanna Hogg and McQueen comparisons, I don’t think they are in the same realm. Not that one is better than the other. Hogg explores some very interesting middle class mores in a way that feels claustrophobic. I liked Archipelago a lot. And McQueen’s work so far centers on showing these individual stories. But it’s harder to define his work.

LA is hit or miss. McGregor lives in LA and isn’t a really huge name. Kate Beckingsale lives in LA, who else? Hunnan lives in LA. McAvoy, Fassy, Elba, Mirren, Dench live in London and are doing the movies in Hollywood because they’ve built a solid body of work in the UK. Build a strong body of work is all I’m saying. Some projects won’t be glamorous but who knows what other projects Disney has in store that could use Hiddleston.

The media hits is one of the ways PR measures how many times and how many outlets picked up their press release, for example. Google News Pirate Fairy and Google News another title from the same franchise, see which one had more pick up. 😉

Oh, no, no, I don’t think his career is failing at all! I’m sorry if it sounded like that. I’m not ripping him apart either. I truly like the guy and want to see him succeed. I just think the PH movie is a poor choice and a big misstep, and that he’s having some really bad spot of luck with not many offers coming his way.

Hiddleston had small parts in War Horse and Midnight in Paris but they were hefty, ones much higher in caliber and quality than a cartoon Hook in Pirate Fairy. The image and recognition Hiddleston was generating two years ago compared to now with Pirate Fairy is really hitting below the mark. Disney is a huge company, and Pixie Hollow and the Tinkerbell movies are such a small miniscule part of it. And from what I remember from when Disney acquired Marvel, we were told that whichever studios Marvel had contracted to make the movies with, those contracts would be honored but Disney would own distribution rights and would share in majority of the profits. So the Pirate Fairy is a separate contract with Disney Studios under the Pixie Hollow franchise, and not contingent on the Marvel one. I’m assuming his L.A agent got him this gig at the last minute considering he just worked on it this spring.

Fassy in Haywire is not on the same par as Hiddleston in Pirate Fairy. Haywire was a Soderbergh movie which was a decent action flick for the masses with names like Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, and Ewan McGregor. Pirate Fairy is for little girls with a limited DVD release. They really can’t be compared. Haymire made it to the Berlin film festival. I doubt Pirate Fairy, no matter how great Hiddleston voices Hook, is going there.

McGregor is a well-known name and actor, the lead in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge (Oscar nominated), the iconic Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars and he’s worked with Woody Allen and Danny Boyle and Tim Burton too, all in main role capacity. Beckinsale might not be Meryl Streep, but she’s still a recognized name and face in the industry. McAvoy, Fassy, Mirren, Dench, Elba have nothing like Pirate Fairy on their resume because all of them want and have serious acting careers. I can’t draw comparisons between Hiddleston and Cumberbatch because apart from Sherlock and Atonement and War Horse, I haven’t seen Benedict Cumberbatch in anything so sorry about that 🙁

I’m sorry, I know other TH fans are happy and even excited about Pirate Fairy and believe this is good exposure but I really can’t see it that way. It is great exposure but for the Pixie Hollow franchise and its Pirate Fairy, not for Tom Hiddleston. The image an actor’s exposure creates matters. Good and successful PR creates a respectable image but right now, Hiddleston’s image is giving some very mixed signals. If he’s googled right now by a director or casting agent and up pops Pirate Fairy with its pixie dust goodness, they would step back and think twice, or worse cross off his name because that’s not the kind of actor they want for their serious emotional drama about a young widowed father struggling to raise his little autistic daughter by himself.

I really hope Hiddleston gets offered/ accepts better roles, regardless of whether he lives in L.A or London. I really want to see him in some good movies as a lead. I do believe he can carry a film on his shoulders if given the chance and would be phenomenal at it.

Again, sorry about my extremely long replies. I know it’s annoying but I really can’t celebrate Tom Hiddleston playing Hook in Pirate Fairy as a smart career move 🙁

Welp, I guess I’m in the minority that thinks it’s no big deal. Many actors do voice work for video games, books, smaller animated movies. I don’t think it’s a setback.

        No need to apologize 🙂

Saw that coming a mile away. Feige has been monitoring the numbers across the spectrum and knows who his money-maker is going to be for Thor 2.

  35. lc says:

I don’t know what the fuss is all about. He has done short movies and voicework in the past. This isn’t any different and probably takes about a day of two of work to complete. Just because Disney made this project more visible, everyone is now dragging him through the mud.

    • jammypants says:

right? better work than no work. This is obviously a slow year for the guy, but geez, not like it doesn’t happen to every other actor. So what if he’s at every event. The guy is hustling and being professional all the way through.

I also don’t get why some people need to drag the guy down for a) being positive and embarrassingly enthusiastic even if the work is not to their snobby standards, b) compare him to Cumberbatch (to piss on him and make Cumberbatch appear so great. They’re both wonderful, geez), c) rip him a new a**hole for being new to the game and learning.

He’s one of those damned if you do and damned if you don’t types. Damn him for trying. Damn him for not getting roles. Damn him for doing his job promoting his work.

  36. Dani says:

While he’s definitely good looking, and I’d love to see what’s going on with that pet snake of his…he really just gets on my nerves. He’s like an overeager teenage girl, all the time. I don’t think he’s self absorbed as much as he just wants to please his fans. But for the love of God just be quiet for 3 seconds.

  37. MissThing says:

He has sung and danced during interviews many times before. This is not new or unusual or “copying” for him. This is basically who he is. He has also done a ton of voice-work in the past so this is nothing new.

Oh its not a uniform by the way, he simply has ZERO fashion sense. he likes the color blue so he works the 5 outfits he has and hopes he doesn’t look retarded.

He LIKES being on stage and the center of attention. I know that feeling well. His loquaciousness is one of the reasons he has so many fangirls.

You guys also forget that to be a performer is basically to BE nothing more than a dancing monkey on puppet strings bound to the whims of the puppeteers who in this case are Disney.

I think he has talent and I think he has a terrific presence when he is “in character”

I also appreciate the trouser-snake fanservice he gives us 😉

  38. Miss Melissa says:

So what do we think? Nice guy, or a REALLY good actor playing a nice guy?

I feel for him. I’m sure this is not how he envisioned his life post-Avengers.

And I have to admit, I have NEVER heard any stories of him being rude or unkind to anyone. Nor anything other than he works really hard at his job… no matter what one may think of his actual skill (I for one think he is very good).

I know he gets the side eye from everyone, including me from time to time, but can anyone point to ANY story of him behaving badly? Even in rumor?

Nope, not one story. And none of the ex girlfriends are out there bad mouthing him, either.

    Just sayin’.

    • tubular_trekkie says:

      Agreed.

I see no real evidence for me to think he isn’t a genuinely nice chap. If it’s all a façade it must be *exhausting* keeping that going 24/7.

      • DahliaDee says:

Speaking as someone who has to keep up appearances, and not 24/7, it IS exhausting. And impossible. As the philosopher Didactylos put it, ‘Things just happen. What the hell.’ So I think you really have to be a very kind, very patient and very genuine person to pull it off. Which is why I like him. And it makes me wonder whether he’s really full of himself, or just that damn excitable. He’s on the record in a lot of interviews saying that he gets easily excited over the smallest things. Or not necessarily even saying it as such. The torchlight video for his trip to Guinea comes to mind: “And it flashes. Yes!” 5 yo me, who would’ve given up half her toy car collection (*shrug* dolls were for getting their hair and heads chopped off, I really was Wednesday Addams) for that thing was cheering him enthusiastically. 29 yo me who rates her Kindle ahead of her boyfriend as the love of her life begrudgingly admitted he was right, but maybe shouldn’t have given it away… Umm…

      • DahliaDee says:

I think that kind of constant cheerfulness is only exhausting to others. Then again, it’s better than having to deal with constant moping and hand-holding. I’ve dealt with both, and while the former can get on my nerves, eventually you just give in, because how can you not? While the latter just makes you run that “Tom & Jerry” murderous sequence through your head.
