VMAs dominated by Miley Cyrus’s stank, Justin Timberlake’s hustle

I don’t even remember the last time I sat down and watched the VMAs purposefully. I’m glad I did, because for the most part, last night’s VMAs was a hot mess. Or maybe Miley just got her stank over the whole night by performing so early and so messily. First, let’s talk about the actual awards. Justin Timberlake won Video of the Year for “Mirrors” which, I’m sorry, is a terrible video. One Direction won Song of the Summer, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won two awards, Best Hip-Hop video (“Can’t Hold Us”) and best video with a social message (“Same Love”). Selena Gomez won her first VMA for “Come and Get It” and Taylor Swift took home an award as well. You can read about the winners here.

Surprisingly enough, there are several moments from the show that I want to highlight, but let’s just get to what everyone is talking about this morning: Miley Cyrus acting the biggest, most cracked-out stripper in the world. Everything about her performance was PAINFUL. I was embarrassed for her. It was like she was nervous and she forgot how to dance so she just decided to grab her crotch a lot and try to twerk and it was just… gross. It’s not a matter of “shaming” a young woman for owning her sexuality. It’s a matter of saying Miley is trying much, much too hard to seem “street” and “ratchet” and “adult” and the whole thing just failed miserably. Oh, and I think Robin Thicke was like, “Um, RLY?”

Here’s Lady Gaga’s opening act. I know she was trying to be grotesque and provocative and whatever, but after Miley’s disastrous performance, I like Gaga’s performance even more. And yes, I think those “boos” were part of the song.

YEEZUS. Call me crazy, but I love this sh-t. Kanye performing a song most people don’t know while completely backlit by a screen of a forest? Seriously, how can you not love Yeezus?!

Justin Timberlake really surprised me – I didn’t expect him to hustle that hard to show people that he deserved to win the Video Vanguard award, which is basically like a Lifetime Achievement Award. Justin’s performance was EPIC. And it really was the best part of the show. Also, old-school N*Sync, bitches!!!

Here’s the video of just the N*Sync stuff.

Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert & Jennifer Hudson performing “Same Love”. This was a beautiful performance. I love the flags!

And that’s about it. I didn’t even stay up for Katy Perry. Was she good? Blah. Anyway. Twerk. Etc.

ha ha, Miley’s hardcore is laughable. gah, what a joke.

    • LB says:

I know she’s trying to project an adult image and by adult, I mean a grown up image. But there are better ways to let the world know you’re not a child anymore. I think in a few years, she will look back and regret this. Which is fine – her mistake to make, after all. But you’re right. It’s a big joke for now – her idea of what adulthood is.

      • Kcaia says:

That is true, but she has to learn her way just like the rest of us. I have no problem with her. I think she’s interesting.

      • lisa says:

        yes

but on the brightside, she looks ready for that hellboy remake if anyone wants to make one

      • Lucinda says:

I do think she will look back in a few years and groan. I will say though it sounded like she was singing and not lip syncing. So I’ll give her that. The rest was painful and I really like Miley but this was just bad.

      • mayamae says:

For me one of the problems, besides the obvious, is the song seemed kind of sweet and innocent, and had nothing to do with the bumping and grinding.

  2. Eh...I'm Indifferent says:

I have never cringed more at a performance than I did last night. Shaking her tail-feather in the faces of the kids in the front row, thrusting her crotch at them, singing off key, giving Robin Thicke a lapdance (notice the camera NEVER panned to his wife). Ugh! I’m usually a Miley Cyrus apologist, but I needed that to be over…for her. You could hear the silence during her performance when she stopped screaming into the mic.

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA, I wanted to pull her off the stage I was so embarrassed for her. When she started dry-humping Robin Thicke I actually covered my eyes.

She made Lady Gaga look like Ginger freaking Rogers.

      • QQ says:

Ugh that watery ass With that latex diaper.. Good Gracious

But also camera maybe didnt pan to Patton cause that lady looked like she got there shitfaced already

      • Eleonor says:

It was the most embarassing thing I’ve seen since Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch.

      • emmie_a says:

“…watery ass with that latex diaper”

        Perfect description of Miley!

      • BooBooLaRue says:

OMG, I just watched the clip and I’m so deeply embarrassed for her. The brief flash to RiRi’s face says it all – polite boredom.

      • UsedToBeLulu says:

“watery-ass”. <— This! I was surprised, because she is so thin, and SUPPOSEDLY in shape! My guess is, she is partying too hard and then not eating to make up for it. Not good.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“It was the most embarassing thing I’ve seen since Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch.”

        EXACTLY!!!! Perfect description!

    • V4Real says:

Even her intro onto the stage was laughable. She kept making those faces like she was smelling something bad. It was horrible and she made Lady Gaga look good and I found her to be bad as well.

As for the gyrating and suggestive gestures she was giving, I’m sure MTV knew about it and was ok with it because they do have rehearsals. There were no 4 second delays. Robin’s wife was probably on board to because their marriage isn’t as straight lace as one might think. Paula was the one that gave Robin the ok to put naked girls in Blurred Lines.

What killed it most was Miley’s attempt at dancing and singing. I can’t believe they paired her with Thicke and 2 Chainz.

      • Samtha says:

Oh god–the worst was her fondling/stroking her imaginary hair. She looked deranged.

      • Mindy says:

        V4Real

Just to confirm that Robin and his wife are hardl vanilla. Robin heavily implied on Howard Stern that they do have threesomes. And when Howard asked him the question directly and told him.that his silence would be taken as confirmation, Robin stayed silent. Not that its our business……

      • emmie_a says:

Just because MTV has rehearsals doesn’t mean Miley did all that during her rehearsal. I think even MTV would tell her to re-think her moves. It wasn’t sexy or shocking — it was raunchy and gross.

      • Sabrine says:

Robin’s wife could care less about Miley’s antics. It’s on stage, not behind closed doors. I switched over to the Oprah channel for the duration – too painful to watch.

Miley isn’t too worried. Here everyone is talking about her. And what do you remember about the VMA’s? Hmmmm?

    • L says:

The Will Smith reaction shot that’s circling the internet pretty much sums up how I felt about that whole performance. Gross.

And the girl needs to put her tongue away. It is not sexy. Not at all.

      • skyler1 says:

I completely agree. That thing needs to be amputated or something. Well, maybe not amputated but hell can’t she keep the dang thing in her mouth and not hanging out pointing at everyone??

      • Petee says:

She could go tongue to tongue with Gene Simmons.Horrible,horrible,horrible.The VMA’s have nothing to do with music anymore. There is no music! What happened to rock and roll and people with real talent?

      • Jenny says:

@Petee, I actually found a number of performers this year to be impressive live. Although the performances were pretty limited to very pop music, I thought Kanye, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and the girl who sings on Same Love were all great. I was also pleasantly surprised by Drake’s singing voice.

      • V4Real says:

The funniest thing about The Smiths reaction is that Jaden always have that same digusted scowl on his face no matter what’s the situation.

      • Jen says:

The Smith’s reaction in the audience was priceless. I agree on Jayden’s scowl though, he and Justin Beiber both have the same look all of the time. I think they practiced that look with each other.

    • whipmyhair says:

So my reaction to Miley looked almost exactly like this…

      http://www.buzzfeed.com/summeranne/taylor-swift-couldnt-handle-miley-cyrus-robin-thicke-vmas

But I was able to turn it off after 3 minutes and then cleanse by brain with some old school Britney VMA action.

    • aquarius64 says:

Everyone’s is talking about Miley’s Ratchet Moment, even the morning talk shows. I feel bad for Paula Patton; and I hope she lets Robin Thicke have it for co-signing on that raunch-fest. The Twerk Jerk better pray MRS. ROBIN THICKE (Paula) doesn’t publicly rip her a new one. That hillbilly hoochie rubbed her #1 mitten hand over a married man’s junk. Out-of-bounds, stage show or not.

What gets me were the audience reactions. The Smiths’ WTF looks on their faces. Rihanna looking unimpressed. When celebrities and the public are putting you on blast on social media for your “performance” you failed. Miley is getting attention, but not the way she may like.

      • Shannon says:

Meh look at Paula. Woman is gorgeous. Her husband was PERFORMING. I’m sure she’s done much worse on the big screen. Robin and her are probably laughing their asses off at Miley. I would be. I’d be saying “baby you looked GOOD last night but that thing you were dancing with…I have no words.”

      • gefeylich says:

For some people (say, Lohan), negative attention is better than no attention. Cyrus obviously agrees with this. She’s seen her [worthless] dad become totally obsolete and I guess she figures this is the best way to stay in people’s minds.

Too bad she also doesn’t know that much better women before her [Madonna, Gwen Stefani] have held attention in the pop music world without resorting to embarrassing shit like this.

    • JudyK says:

That was an obscene embarrassment…watched about 2/3 of the video and couldn’t stomach another second of it.

I’m so over Miley Cyrus. She’s nothing but an overrated, talentless punk.

      • emmie_a says:

Talentless is key. I don’t know – maybe her whole act wouldn’t bother me as much if she could actually sing or make good music or entertain – but she can’t do anything other than try to be shocking. It’s stupid.

      • V4Real says:

        @emmie

Yes I do know that things don’t always go as rehearsed. That is why they now have in place the 4 second delay as I mentioned in my original comment. What I was saying was that this is MTV and they tend to let the performers get away with a bit more than lets just say the Grammys would.

      • Maria_Spain says:

        +1

        she is so patetic now

      • Shannon says:

And on the red carpet she was like “oh wait until you see my performance!!” Like it was going to be this epic, amazing thing. It was God awful. I miss Brit Brit’s VMA performances. Not that sad one she did but the other ones. The one in the glittery naked suit and the one with the snake. Those were EPIC. Miley’s was just ridiculously lame and trashy.

    • karen says:

Just watched her most embarrassing and awful performance. I cannot imagine being a parent today with her as a role model.

      • TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

Exactly, the problem is she has no TALENT; she can’t sing, act or dance; as Maureen said below her sense of entitlement is grating – what you saw was how mediocre much of pop is – can anyone actually sing and play their instruments without busby/berkely dance routines, overdubbing/backing tracks, etc. like they used to – hopefully this will kill Miley’s “music” career.

      • HappyMom says:

We avoid popular music for the most part in my house. Plus, my teenagers are music snobs-they love the Beatles and jazz. If I even have the top 40 station on in the car they whine until I switch it over to something else.

      • gg says:

Good for you, HappyMom. The radio has been utter shite for many years now. All my friends do as you do and their kids are Beatles, Ramones, Pink Floyd, etc. fans and regard all this hoopla as a big miss.

As for myself, I turned off the radio in about 1985 and have NEVER turned it back on. I stick to my ipod catalogues and listen to podcasts.

Real rock and roll never dies. Go away, Miley and Bieber, you both disgust me.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I haven’t watched it. I am literally grossed out with the GIF’s.
I guess we can thank Miley for one thing, the world at large can now agree that there is a degree of vulgarity that is unacceptable. It actually gives me hope for humanity.
Vulgar, cheap, trashy, disgusting….cringe-inducing, embarrassing. I truly wonder what her so-called fiancé has to say about this.

      • gg says:

I’m afraid she’s just lowered the bar into the subterranean. Because you know some little idiot is going to try and “best” her. I’m looking at Rihanna. Notice she wasn’t grossed out in the least, only bored, and she does that to everyone else but herself.

      • VioletCrumble says:

Her lewd antics would not sit too well with a decent Aussie boy. I think her so-called “fiancé” is long over her. I’m starting to wonder if all this outrageous behaviour is a way to show him what he’s missing?

    • Dannielle says:

“I’m usually a Miley Cyrus apologist, but I needed that to be over…for her.”

      Oh Lord yes. x10000000

I actually like Miley. And I can say that because this crap she’s trying so hard to do right now isn’t who she really is. It’s who she’s *trying* to be. I think in the last 2 or 3 years of her life, everything she relied on began disappearing–her parent’s marriage, her youth and subsequent fan base, Liam…I think she choked. She has actually choked in LIFE. What we’re seeing is, practically speaking, a 2 year-long panic attack. I don’t have any doubt that she didn’t see herself becoming the next JT, and instead thought she’d be the next Hilary Duff–and that terrified her. This girl has been “relevant”, so to speak, since she was a child. She knows no other life. And she panicked at the idea of no longer having that. So, all the try-harding ratchetness…I get it. She’s petrified.

But I was genuinely embarrassed for her.

And she VERY visibly was on something. X, most likely. Or coke.

      • Tara says:

You might be wrong – you might be right, but it is nice to see someone look at Miley from a different perspective. I think there is nothing wrong with showing a little compassion when someone has lost her way.

      • carol says:

i agree with you. I’m curious, how do you know that she was high? How do you tell if people are on drugs?

      • mayamae says:

I have similar compassion. She’s at the age where most child stars crash, and they’re always pretty pitiful. It may seem obvious to us that she should go away and try to live a “normal” life, but I’m sure she has no idea what normal is. I blame some of it on her parents.

      • Hakura says:

@Dannielle – I agree, you made some very valid points, regarding what sort of life she’s had up to now. It truly makes me see her situation from a different perspective, & makes me feel for what sort of pressure she’s always lived under.

I don’t mean it’s a catch-all for all her bad decisions (& *damn*, this VMA ‘performance’- If you can even CALL it that, is sure as hell one of them). Making bad choices about substance abuse is still an issue I think she needs help with.

I think she *could* have a successful music career, if she hired (& listened to) an image consultant, who could help her keep her rather large head from finding its way back up her disproportionately small rear.
She’d be far from the first popular musician with no talent to speak of.

      • Dannielle says:

I can’t help but feel bad for her. She is just spinning her wheels right now.

@Carol: I strongly suspect substances due to several factors–her eyes: very bugged out and rarely blinking. Her body movements: there’s a difference between someone touching themselves as far as choreography goes, and what she was dong. Her hands were all over herself, like she was preoccupied with how strange and “awesome” her skin felt reacting to touch. Utter lack of inhibition: again, most stars will push the envelope, in a very scripted way. This was not on script. People mentioned that it looked like she forgot HOW to dance–I couldn’t say it better.

@Hakura: The music isn’t terrible, is it? It’s not my favorite, but so far there’s enough there to wrangle a decent pop career out of. If she just dialed it back like 3 or 4 notches, she probably *could* be a white Rihanna. And that would be fine, career-wise. An image consultant would help, I agree–if she would only listen to them.

      • Hakura says:

@Dannielle – No, you’re right, about there not being anything wrong with her music. (I didn’t mean to be that harsh, I think she has talent, but her current stuff isn’t showing it at all). I listened to the new single ‘Wrecking Ball’, & liked it for the most part.

I’m just forced, based on her awful performance, to question just how much of her ‘voice/songs’ have to be created/altered before it’s good enough to add to an album or be released. But I also understand the bad performance is likely from a combination of substance abuse/trying to dance while singing/not being able to hear herself singing/being incredibly nervous.

I just feel terrible for her. I had a hard time getting through it, & that’s unusual for me. =(

  3. Maureen says:

It’s Miley’s entitlement attitude that really gets me, more so than what she actually does. She really believes that she is entitled to be adored and have real artists rave about her “artistry” when in reality she’s just a try-hard little mess.

    • Andrew says:

Oh gosh I woke up to this all over my FB newsfeed. Watched last night and turned my head because I was embarrassed. Gaga actually did decent. She can sing live and can entertain live, unlike Miley. I love JT, he’s also a great entertainer, even though I’m not too wild about Mirrors video, but I really wasn’t into any of the vids this year.

    • Laura says:

@Andrew, I had to look away too, I felt so bad for her, it was freaking embarassing!!!! She definately didn’t need to go full hooker. Just get up on stage shake ur booty & sing ur song. But no, Miley wated to be the trashiest girl in the trailer park, and why did Robin let her butcher his song? and the foam finger between her legs??? I just can’t.

    • janie says:

I was horrified by her “performance”. It was like a bad wreck & u couldn’t turn away! I think my mouth stayed open thru the whole thing. She was disgusting, obscene and embarrassing! JT was really good! I loved Kanye!! He did a great job!

      • Hakura says:

@janie – “I think my mouth stayed open thru the whole thing.

That’s something you had in common with Taylor Swift (& probably the rest of the world). And I was expecting *Miley* to be the only one who’s mouth stayed open the whole night.

  4. Winnie says:

I felt bad for Miley. Try hard is not a strong enough phrase. She was on something, right? It seemed like something you would do drunk with your friends, not a vma performance.

    • karen says:

Agree! This girl must be on drugs.

      • gefeylich says:

Cyrus may well be on drugs, but this was a highly calculated performance. It was just a really bad one. She obviously thinks being “outrageous” equals “brave” and “edgy.” It’s the ultimate statement from a very feeble, unimaginative mind.

  5. Kiki says:

Miley needs to stop dancing with molly

  6. LDB says:

Not sure who is responsible for her “New Image” but honestly she needs to get better advice. I know she is going for the shock factor, and I understand that, but this was just a hot mess….and that tongue is just plain annoying.

  7. Cleveland Girl says:

Miley looked like a 7th grade girl jumping around in front oh her mirror. She lacked any kind of dance aesthetic – she was a complete embarrassment to herself and everyone around her.

    • Maureen says:

Indeed. But I don’t think she feels embarrassment. I think she’s committed to the fantasy that she’s AWESOME. Narcissists don’t feel things like embarrassment, shame, or regret. Any attempt at explaining to a narcissist what they have done wrong or could just do better is immediately interpreted as “you’re just a hater”, “you don’t GET what I’m doing”, etc. That’s Miley. 1,000%. Britney Spears is the same. That’s why you see Britney going to church in hooker boots and a dress from 1992 that she had to yank on as she walked because it was SO short. NO ONE CAN TELL THESE PEOPLE ANYTHING.

    • Hakura says:

@Cleveland Girl – “Miley looked like a 7th grade girl jumping around /in front oh her mirror…

What she looks like is a “7th grade girl jumping around in front of her mirror” while on an acid trip, surrounded by big pink disinterested-dancing-teddy bears. Which I found creepy as hell, personally >_>

    • Seattle Girl says:

I agree!!! She needs an intervention.

  8. Soccer mom says:

My husband actually watched Miley perform with me and we were both embarrassed for her and grossed out by all the crotch grabbing or whatever she was doing down there!! It was awful. I did enjoy watching Justin Timberlake’s performance. He has talent so he didn’t have to do weird stuff for attention, he just performed and it was good.

  9. Anaya says:

Miley makes me cringe. The sad thing is she thinks she’s being sexy but no one is saying, ‘Damn that Miley is the sexiest thing out here’. People are laughing at her. Does she not get it?? Apparently she doesn’t care. I think she likes the attention no matter what. Did you all see her mom Tish standing up clapping and smiling for Miley at the end of the performance? If I was her mother I’d be hiding my face in shame. Miley’s so embarassing. I mean really, she’s tragicly sad.

    • whipmyhair says:

I barely made it halfway through before my second hand embarrassment became too strong.

But she came out in a leotard and then did a costume change into a skin colour bikini? The whole thing confused me so much…

  10. QQ says:

I called her an attentionwhory shitshow, I stand by it and add: Slutty Squirrel with a Furries Fetish…. Stop legitimizing This lot lizard sounding joke of a career yall!

JT isnt my cup of tea but i liked his old songs, so that was good, i predicted that because he is a Gigantically Inflamed asshole this NSYNC Thing would be too beneath him and basically he pulled a Beysus; FINE I’ll LET THEM SING ME BACK UP WITH LOWER MICROPHONES AND DO TWO SECS OF A HIT THEN DISAPPEAR ( those dudes were sooooo happy to have a gig!!. I see you Kirkpatrick!)

I liked both Ye’ and Drake all in their feefees I really did (drake is a feeling Ya’ll!)

Say what you want about Gaga, 3 costume and wig changes without taking a breath, missing a beat and singing live?! Im here for her hard!

    • Really? says:

QQ you are both fierce AND funny, you need to start your own blog!

    • Jenny says:

+1 to everything and I’ll just add that Bruno Mars’ performance killed it.

      • QQ says:

Lol Thanks Really, Im kinda too assholey and the stuff that happens IRL is epic messy so maybe i need to go back to it!

YES Jenny Bruno totally too the virginity from my tv last night, i wish that fude a Long ass happy career, he is super entertaining!

Right Danielle she is kinda a consummate professional, sometimes her shit might be too esoteric BUT is always well executed and her voice is always on point

    • Dannielle says:

+1 QQ; perhaps we’ve been too hard on Gaga. She did well. She’s a PERFORMER, thru and thru. I’ve never seen her perform and thought, “train wreck”. So, good on her.

    • jaye says:

      “Drake is a feeling” LMAO!!

  11. crab says:

That was like a bad bad car accident! You didn’t want to look but you had to and now its going to be engrained in my brain for the rest of my life!! Ugh!!

  12. Zia says:

The girl is going through a Kfed identity crisis, it seems. Someone needs to reel her in but welcome to L.A. Publicity is publicity.
    She’s just being Miley!

    • Nina W says:

Not anymore. Publicity like this is not good, this little episode will dog her for quite some time. Stuff doesn’t just go away anymore, media has changed a lot. Just because you can get famous for acting the fool doesn’t mean you want that to define your life. She needs to grow up.

  13. Willa says:

She definitely forgot how to dance. She was flailing around and it was so weak! She can’t twerk! It just looked like she bent over and held her butt in the in the air and that’s it. Oh Miley.

    • Mourning the Death of Music says:

But wasn’t it so nice and helpful of MTV to bring out dancers to show her how it’s really done?

Or did no one else notice this? 😉

      • EscapedConvent says:

The stage full of dancing teddy bears & the woman with the stripey legs easily freaked me out more than Miley.

  14. Eleonor says:

If I have to get the Rhianna wannabe I’ll take the original one, thanks.

  15. Samtha says:

This morning, I feel really bad for her. I was laughing at the reaction shots and funny gifs last night, but sheesh. This girl…I don’t even know what to say. It was more than a train wreck. It was more than embarrassing. It was so terrible I don’t even know how to describe it.

Timberlake’s performance was okay, but the sound was awful and he went on too long–with the N*Sync part being too short.

I could barely even hear Katy Perry at the end. They really needed to turn up her mic. Kind of ironic for a song called Roar.

    • Jenny says:

I think she has problems singing live and that is why they drowned her out with the backup track. I also found the whole boxing thing to be very tired.

    • Dannielle says:

SO MUCH YES! And Katy does not have any trouble singing. She’s actually a brilliantly consistent live performer. This was MTV’s fault, entirely. Same thing with the static audio all throughout Justin’s performance.

Turn Katy UP, already. I love her voice and really wanted to hear her.

  16. BlackMamba says:

Miley’s performance was atrocious. I was dying of second hand ambarassment for her, and when she was using that finger? I kept putting my hand over my mouths going ugh.
I thought Drake or ASAP Rocky deserved that hip hop award because those songs are way better than “can’t hold us” but it was for the video so I kinda get it.
I loved JT ang Gaga was ok. I did not stay up either for Katy Perry.

  17. lenje says:

LOLOLOL it’s so ridiculous that I can’t stop laughing! rihanna was unimpressed and Drake was so embarassaed he kept his eyes low 🙂 🙂

To me, Miley looks like a pre-pubescent kid trying to impersonate the cool teens so she’ll feel like she’s in their group.

Wasn’t the Smiths reaction during Lady Gaga?

    • Eleonor says:

Rihanna’s face was amazing: you could totally read “is she trying to be me??”

    • littlestar says:

I had a good laugh at Drake’s reaction to Miley’s performance as well. He was looking at the ground!!!

  18. I felt so much second-hand embarrasment while watching Miley perform. She was soo try-hard and cringe-worthy.

JT was amazing, I am one of the few who actually like him as an actor but as a performer he is simply THE BEST.

Kanye was really good too and I liked Gaga’s costume nods to her earlier looks (from when I still liked her.)

  19. Jen34 says:

I can’t make fun. The girl needs help. She is in Demi Moore territory.

  20. kct says:

I don’t watch awards shows so didn’t know anything about this until this morning. This is a sad little girl who doesn’t know who she wants to be. When her look and personality started to evolve, I thought she was channeling early Gwen Stefani. Now it seems to have gone downhill to more mid career Madonna and Lady Gaga, with a little Gene Simmons thrown in with the tongue always being out. I know she’s young and trying to find her way, but my mothering instincts tell me there’s something deeply wrong here. She’ll grow to regret this.

    • Cerulean Skygirl says:

I’m a mama, too, and I totally agree. She’s how old… late teens? I wish her parents had been able to say something like, “there’s nothing wrong with being unique and going for a mature image, but there’s a BIG difference between “sexy” and “trampy”.” ALSO, this is the same girl who YEARS ago was talking about her deeply Christian roots and morals and saying “Modest is hottest”. She used to say it a LOT!

Now her embarrassing stripper/karaoke performance is out there on the internet forever. I sincerely hope Robin Thicke had no say in who performed with him, because this doesn’t help HIS image much (in my opinion). YUCK all around.

  21. Alyssa says:

Seriously? The tongue hanging out every two seconds, that has to be a joke!!?

  22. Mourning the Death of Music says:

My husband actually hid his face in embarrassment while watching her.

  23. Sarah says:

That performance was about as sexy as a dog farting in your soup. She looked like a baby deer having a seizure.

  24. tifzlan says:

Drake’s second-hand embarrassment for Miley pretty much sums up my feelings for that mess of a “performance”. She came out with her tongue sticking out, crotch in everyone’s faces and ended by dry-humping Robin Thicke. Speaking of, why did he even agree to do this? It’s not like Blurred Lines wouldn’t have gotten a reaction from the crowd.

I actually felt sort of bad for Paula Patton. I know if that were me, i would’ve been pissed as all hell if some lame, try-hard 20 year old Disney hasbeen decided to rub her pancake ass all over my husband and nuzzle his neck.

It’s funny though that Miley seems to think that this is just “shocking” and “controversial” because more than anything, it was desperate and pathetic. She didn’t even sound good. It wasn’t even exciting. It just fell flat on all counts, much like her ass.

My boyfriend and i burst out laughing when the camera panned to Rihanna and her crew and One Direction. I mean, if freaking ONE DIRECTION is embarrassed for you, you know you’re doing everything wrong.

    • Shannon says:

Paula had nothing to worry about. It’s not like Miley is this hot piece of ass. She’s disgusting. I’d rather have that nasty thing rubbing on my man then someone sexier.

      • Ava says:

How about having no one whoring it up on your husband?

      • Amelia says:

Yeah, but, in the unlikely event anyone is ever given the choice of picking who acted like a ‘sexy’ prat around your husband/partner, Cyrus isn’t a terrible choice.
She has NOTHING on Paula, who is absolutely gorgeous and effortlessly sexy without having to resort to such lame efforts.

      • Samtha says:

@Ava, have you seen the video for Blurred Lines? She didn’t seem to mind gorgeous, topless models rubbing up all over him. Why would she care about poor Miley?

      • Shannon says:

He’s a performer. As is Paula. I’m sure she’s done sex scenes and kissed other men in her movies. It’s not real life peeps.

      • tifzlan says:

To me, it just didn’t seem like Miley was supposed to grind all over Robin Thicke. Like she did it for headlines, which is what would annoy me. I mean, i thought Robin looked quite embarrassed too at some points. But otherwise, i agree that Paula Patton is more gorgeous and sexier than Miley would ever dream of being!

    • andrea says:

I actually kind of understand why he agreed to this performance. I mean, part of why blurred lines did so well (catchiness notwithstanding) was the raunchy shock factor of the video. How could he top that in a live performance? It did seem a little beneath him with mileys performance being so aeful, but i think it will work out for him in the long run, cause everyone is talking about it.

      • Shannon says:

Oh yeah. He’s not going to regret this at all. I mean that’s all anyone is talking about. Miley is gross but look how much attention their performance is getting. I bet his CD will be selling even more now. Speaking of….I need to go buy me a copy. I can’t believe I haven’t yet.

      • Samtha says:

Yep. Very few people are dogging him about it. It’s all about how horrifying Miley is, which really isn’t fair. He shares some of the blame for that debacle.

  25. neelyo says:

I hate that in Hollywood for the past decade or so, in order for female child performers to prove they have grown up, they must remove as many clothes as possible.

Miley was fucking hilarious. She has given fodder to comedians for weeks.

Lady Gaga owes Miley a muffin basket. Everyone is talking about how horrible Miley was so no one noticed that Gaga’s performance was pretty mundane. Ooh, lots of costume changes, how avant garde.

    • All Mark says:

Miley totally took the heat off Gaga. Funny thing is Miley’s singles are really selling right now… They’re both top 10 of iTunes …

    • Petee says:

Agree.Hopefully Gaga will go away too. While Gaga does have talent she used it all up already. Her shock antics are old news.No one cares.

  26. Tiffany27 says:

F*ck Miley. Justin SLAYED last night. Seriously he was amazing. And this is coming from a person who doesn’t really like him.

  27. Tessa says:

She lost me when she was humping a foam finger with her tongue out. I was so bad. So so bad.

  28. Jacqueline says:

I kinda want to cut out her tongue.

P.S. if you don’t want to be called a “rachet white girl,” quit acting like one.

  29. pretty says:

let’s look at the bright side.
lady gaga probably is furious right now. this is supposed to be her comeback and miley is stealing all the attention. people are only talking about her. hahahaha BURN

  30. TuesdaysChild says:

Miley was pitiful. Has she no self respect? I feel true pity for her because that level of desperation and try-hard must come from some deeply insecure place. What a horrible place to be.

Loved JHud and Macklemore. So over Gaga, her moment has passed methinks.

JT really should stick to music, he is blessed with a gift. Forget that acting schtick.

    • Jenny says:

I do love JHud, but I kinda wanted her to leave. The girl who is actually on the track killed it and JHud was like an unnecessary accessory.

      • Dannielle says:

Right? And completely random. I was looking down at my phone, looked up, and there’s Jennifer Hudson. WTH? WHY???

      • notsoanonymous says:

I have no idea why they brought JHud on to sing over the top of Mary Lambert on ‘Same Love’ – in fact, it was obnoxious. Let the person who actually sang the track have her moment in the spotlight for once. Sheesh.

      • Shannon says:

Yeah she kept trying to out sing her. Wasn’t necessary. I thought the other girl held her own. Yes JHud you can sing. Now get the f*ck outta here.

  31. Nev says:

Hahaha she made me smile a couple times. I kinda love that she was running around acting a fool.

  32. Mia 4S says:

I didn’t watch the show but the clips are awful! This is not about slut shaming, or haters, or just a young woman exploring…that was a bad performance. It was bad. Period! Of course nothing surprises me anymore. The idiot public has given entire successful careers to terrible performers!

    • Petee says:

      Word!!

    • Faye says:

This! The problem isnt with Miley acting like a slut its the fact it was an awful preformance it looked like a child trying to act sexy. If Rihannah had of twerked on Robin Thicke I doubt people would of been as bothered. Someone needs to sit her down and say No Miley! Bad Miley! She must have some awful friends to let her go out like that.

  33. Diana says:

Before I watched the video, I thought: ‘it might be lame and cheesy, but how bad can it really be?’

HOLY. crap. That was was so cringe-worthy. She looked horrendous out there. The sad part is, I don’t know if anyone around her has her back enough to tell her that she basically showed her ass to the world last night — and not in a good way.

  34. TG says:

I only got through about 25 mind on the Red Carpet then decided to go to bed. I saw a child in a purple dress singing and giving away free tickets to another child who couldn’t be more than 10 years old. I then saw another child in a red winter cap and a hideous black and white stat skirt and of course the oily face if Miley Cyrus and was board out of my mind. I am definitely past the age demographic for this stuff. I guess having to suffer thru the existence of Miley, Beiber, Gaga, etc. is my generation’s punishment for inflicting Madonna on our elders back in the 80’s and 90’s. So the more we hate on these gross children the more the youngsters are going to like them.

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @TG,

TG, I’m out of the demographic too, & when I see embarrassing attenton-starved children like Bieber & Miley Cyrus showing their asses on TV, I thank God I’m out of it.

I really like your “punishment for inflicting Madonna” theory. Most excellent!

  35. Steph says:

Soooo I watched the Miley one and a couple things:

    1. She was singing like my friends and I sing when we are drunk and “the” song starts playing in the bar.
    2. I think everyone else was embarrassed for her judging by the faces of people in the audience.
    3. Poor Robyn Thicke. How could they do that to him!

  36. AL says:

Gaga must be absolutely FURIOUS that no one is really talking about her today. She really wanted to get noticed while pranzing around in her thong on stage. Disgusting really…

  37. Steph says:

O yea and for all the Pilates Miley seems to do her ass was not looking good in those hot pants.

    • Samtha says:

To be fair, no one’s ass would look good in those, they were so high and tight. If they weren’t compressing her cheeks down so far, her butt might have looked better.

    • emmie_a says:

Miley isn’t thin from pilates and a clean diet – it’s drugs.

  38. Shannon says:

Holy foam finger. Miley is just GROSS. Justin was incredible. I know a lot of people hate him but I’ve always loved him. Loved his performance but was disappointed that NSYNC was only on for like a minute. Not fair!!!

    • LL says:

I agree on everything. I’ve always love JT ever since NSYNC and I still do now. He completely slayed yesterday along with Bruno Mars.

      • Shannon says:

Yeah huge crush on him still. And Robin Thicke makes me giddy too. Even after that Beetlejuice suit wearing performance last night with Hannah Montana. He can do no wrong.

    • Mommak918 says:

Yes, JT knows how to perform!
He gave his fans exactly what they wanted!

And yaaa, Robin’s outfit DID LOOK LIKE BEETLEJUICE outfit!

      But, he still is hot.
      UGH, Miley get off….

  39. Amory says:

I was waiting for her to wear something fun and interesting on the red carpet. Instead we got cheap bedazzled spandex. It looks like she took some old work out clothes and went crazy with the bedazzler.

  40. chloe says:

She needs to stop with the tongue thing, I want to grab it and staple it into her mouth. I can’t decide if this girl is on something or needs to be on something, because that shitz last night was embarrassing, though I completely enjoyed the shots of the audience. Oh yeah I wish she would stop humping teddy bears she’s giving them a bad name.

    • whipmyhair says:

      I have an idea!

Every time Miley can get through a photocall, papshot, music video;or anytime she is photographed and DOESN’T show us her tongue- she can tweet about how she is “all about the music” and Pilates or whatever she wants.

Positive reinforcement. And although I hate comparing people to animals; it’s just like dog training. Behave properly, get a reward. Negative behaviour gets consequences. Any suggestions?

  41. Angelica says:

Miley’s performance made me wanna bleach my eyeballs…

    Lady GaGa for the win!

  42. Merritt says:

Miley and Robin Thicke were just gross.

She needs to stop with the bad twerking. She just looks ridiculous. She just needs to stop with cultural appropriation in general.

  43. CF says:

I saw all of Lady Gagas ass, and her performance was ten times classier than Mileys. Im not a huge gaga fan, but she puts on show. she had obviously practiced a ton for all the choreography. Miley was just awkwardly fumbling around reaching for an invisible penis. I wanted to watch the whole video so i could catch up on what happened but it was too embarrassing.

  44. Lukie says:

FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE PUT YOUR TONGUE BACK IN YOUR MOUTH YOU LOOK LIKE A GARGOYLE!

  45. epiphany says:

What Miley did isn’t a woman “owning” her sexuality – she’s giving it away, apparently to the highest bidder. This is the same rationalization strippers use to convince themselves they’re in control of the men how come to see them, not the other way around. If a woman has to flush her dignity and self-respect in order to be sexy, then she’s not.

  46. Bex says:

I wish I could unsee the Miley debacle. My second hand embarrassment knows no bounds but it is niceties know pretty much everyone else suffered with me.

Miley talk doesn’t belong in the same thread as the JT discussion. Such a contrast between his production and how one-dimensional some of the other performers were!

  47. Debra says:

Did anyone notice the girl who looks like Britt dancing with Justin?
That had to be a calculated move.

  48. M.A.F. says:

“Why does she keep sticking her tongue out?”-that question just kept going through my head the whole time. Painful is correct.

  49. AustinMJ says:

I promise, no more apologies or excuses for her being “young and experimental”. Girl is high and a legend in her own mind. What is the consensus? X? Coke? both?

Embarassed for her. Pathetic. Just pathetic.

    I smell REHAB.

  50. Guest says:

Who turned Little Miley C out? The appropriation awards was dull except for two performances but music sales has been the lowest ever. Looking forward for the train wreck next year.

  51. Mourning the Death of Music says:

“To be perfectly honest, Miley Cyrus’ performance on the MTV MAs tonight even made me uncomfortable.” – Satan

  52. Toot says:

No Bruno love? 🙁 He was my favorite part of the show. I love Gorilla.

    • Laura says:

I, LOVED his performance!!!!!! That is a sexy ass song, like seriously, I’m now obsessed with it!!!

  53. Trillian says:

Ugh. I don’t care what she wears, does with her hair or how much she humps around but for effs sake she need to keep that tongue in her mouth! I don’t even have the words to describe how gross, ridiculous und idiotic that looks.

  54. Mia 4S says:

So I have a question that may or may not be something. Where was Mrs Timberlake? From what I’ve read there is zero evidence she was there? No photos or cutaways to the proud loving wife? Interesting.

  55. Hillshmill says:

My husband and I watched the Miley thing last night. You know, there’s a right way to do sexy and provocative so that the world is taking about you the next day. Britney’s snake Slave For You performance is an example. I get that Miley is trying to publicly own her sexuality but that performance was unprofessional, uninspired, and just poorly performed in general. If she wants to be a legitimate performer, she should take advantage of singing and dancing lessons to develop a show that looks good but still showcases her personality. I hope she takes the criticism well and tries to improve but I have a feeling she’ll just give us the twerking finger.

  56. arabella says:

    I love ‘Ye. That’s all I got.

  57. Cirque28 says:

Poor Miley. With that white tongue, she looks like she has oral thrush. She looks unhealthy in general, IMO.

I don’t want to fat-shame or thin-shame (health and beauty come in many shapes and sizes), but whatever Miley is doing, she just doesn’t look well right now.

  58. dorothy says:

Miley’s performance was….just so, so bad.

  59. Lulu86 says:

i think Miley is punking us all.

    • phlyfiremama says:

Yep, the VMA’s punked us too! All I could think was “wow. OMG. Whoa. WTF? Ouch. STOP!” It says something for my state of mind that I seriously thought Lindsay Lohan would have classed the whole place up a little bit…

  60. ycnan says:

Is it really that difficult to find videos that can be viewed in Canada? Other sites don’t seem to have a problem with it.

  61. starrywonder says:

I have never been so embarrassed for another human being before like this. Ever.

  62. Nev says:

Her second single is already number one on itunes!!!!

    she’s doing something right.

    • Dannielle says:

And unlike WCS, “Wrecking Ball” is actually a really nice song. So, at least she has that.

  63. Mandy says:

I’m having a hard time expressing my feelings about Miley’s performance. It was the most try-hard, cringe worthy “performance” I have ever seen. And as a mother, I couldn’t help but think what was really going on in Miley’s mother’s head while she was standing up and clapping for her. I don’t know what Miley was really going for here, but if it was to look like an escaped mental patient then congratulations, you achieved it! And for the love, stop sticking your tongue out, you look like you’re trying to catch flies!

    • Christin says:

Her mother was probably proud and fine with it. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I think the parent most likely to object is her dad and he’s outnumbered by try hard girl and groupie mom.

      • briargal says:

Agree with this. Sort of sounds similar to another “child star”. The mother let her child run wild and lives off her daughter. And the dad tried to rein in the wildness in his daughter which the mom and spoiled little brat ignored. And now the adult child has tainted her life and career with the nicknames–homewrecker and stalker. Right, LR?

  64. grabbyhands says:

All the shade being thrown her way is giving me life. Maybe this will be enough to shut her up for a while and wake her up to the fact that the only people interested in this embarrassing schitck are the same 12 year olds she’s so desperately trying to distance herself from. Everyone else is laughing.

Apparently she was pretty pressed that she didn’t get an award and left the show early. Such a spoiled little girl.

  65. Kcaia says:

I really like Blood on the Leaves. I kind of like the direction Kanye is going in. Anyone heard the whole album?

  66. Kcaia says:

I really like Blood on the Leaves. I kind of like the direction Kanye is going in. Anyone heard the whole album?

  67. Yelly says:

The *NSYNC reunion made my life. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt was hot as hell.

  68. Brittney says:

Technical note… this doesn’t seem to be a problem for anyone else, but ALL of these videos started playing automatically at the same time when I opened this link. I watched the show last night, so I just muted them and scrolled past, but that could get pretty annoying.

That said… I watched for the *NSYNC reunion but adored Katy’s performance too. She was fierce and way sexier than Gaga or Miley, even though (or BECAUSE) she was more covered up. I never thought I’d say this, but Katy Perry brought the class last night. It gave me flashbacks to Christina’s Dirrty music video, except the objectification wasn’t gratuitous.

    • Kcaia says:

I really like Katy now, even though I really despised at the time how I Kissed A Girl ripped off Jill Sobules I Kissed A Girl but got all of the credit and praise for it. But the I started falling in love with a few of her songs, Hot n Cold, Teenage Dream, and then my daughter and I watched her movie (which worked its magic) and made me like her more. I don’t personally like all her music or even her personality, but I think she’s incredibly talented and unique. Katys here to bring it.

    • Samtha says:

I wish they had turned up Katy’s mic. I could barely hear her.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I’ve heard Katy Perry sing live (on youtube)….you’re not missing much.

        Girlfriend can’t sing worth anything…

She sounds like someone who sorta kinda sounds like Katy Perry, but in a completely horrible, drunk way.

  69. Rux says:

    What da f…was she thinking?!

    I love Yeezus seriously.

  70. aquarius64 says:

Best news of the night – Miley didn’t get an award. Apparently quality still counts.

    • lady mary. says:

yeah, for all her twerking ,and begging she didnt win ,was she nominated? so didnt gaga ,that must feel awful,

  71. juicylucy says:

I hate to say this, but at a much darker time in my life, I spent a lot of time with people who did a loooot of coke. (not my personal drug of choice but I was just as bad)

If Miley is not on coke, she’s certainly doing one of the best impressions of a coked out party girl I’ve ever seen.

  72. Skins says:

Does anybody actually buy Miley’s music or pay to see her “perform”? That was the most pathetic try-hard, look at me “performance” I have ever seen. This coming from somebody who actually used to like her. Yeah Miley, people are talking about you today, but not how you wanted. Pathetic!

  73. Dawn says:

No matter what you think about Miley’s performance last night she sure has everyone is talking about. I don’t watch award shows but I did watch the blurbs out there have to say was sort of embarrassed for Miley, thought Kanye West proved once again that he is no musical genius just a terrible rapper/singer and performer. No wonder he rants all the time, it’s all he has. And Justin Timberlake killed it! Those are the only performances I’ve watched because those are the ones people are talking about.

  74. smee says:

There’s a think small dogs get called Hanging Tongue Syndrome and she’s got it.

Also, hyper sexuality is a symptom of bipolar disorder. Just sayin’………

  75. Annie says:

Watched all the performances. What stuck out to me was that Miley’s performance was for Miley and about Miley. Period. The best performers perform for the audience. Maybe Miley will get that some day.

  76. emmie_a says:

Miley is probably loving all the attention she’s getting. Some people like it no matter what they have to do to get it or how negative it might be. She’s gross.

  77. truthful says:

Jutin and NSynch did the damn thang!!!

    best part of the show.

  78. jess says:

I Loved It !!! I thought it was hilarious, it was obvious from the beginning she was spoofing GaGa. Anyone doubting her talent should watch the Lilac Wine video. Did I wish she had preformed that? YES, but it was obvious she was just fitting in with the usual VMA outlandishness.

    • emmie_a says:

Nice try but she wasn’t spoofing anyone.

    • Amory says:

Did you see when they panned to some of the other singers there? One guy was clearly avoiding looking at the stage and the others looked bored and faintly disgusted.

If this was supposed to be a joke, it doesn’t look like the musicians thought it to be the least bit successful.

  79. Sisi says:

She just looked plain unprofessional. There was no quality, no good voice, no good performance, choreography and styling. And I’m supposed to take her serious as an artist? It was amateurish.

And her desperate attempts to look grown up and sexy actually only look childish.

  80. Madpoe says:

    Someone stoled her pitchfork!

Since when is being attacked by a bedazzler machine hardcore? Street Credit?
Come to my project sweetie, 😉

  81. Tig says:

JT was amazing- I commented to my hubs, it’s turning into the JT show, to which he replied- you’d prefer more time with Miley? NOOO

OT- what do you supposed Momma Hemsworth is saying to her boy after last night? Run fast, run far?? I was so embarrassed for her- she really has no clue.

    • notsoanonymous says:

I thought the same thing about Hemsworth. I mean, how do you even get up the next morning and look at her in the eye with any kind of respect?

I actually felt a tiny bit sorry for Robin Thicke too. The performance didn’t exactly move him away from the ‘rapey’ comments that were being thrown his way when it came out. Ugh. Who signed off on this sh*t?!

  82. judyjudy says:

    Her hair. HER HAIR.

    • emmie_a says:

It’s bad. Didn’t Gwen Stefani have that same hair style years ago?? It looked fresh and cool on Gwen.

      • judyjudy says:

The little noblettes aren’t so bad, it’s that awful piece of forgotten fringe in the back that made it so fun. Blaaaahhhhh

      • EscapedConvent says:

I thought those were her baby she-devil horns. She is obviously trying to be a “bad girl”, whatever that means to her.

And in a twisted cross-pollination of gossip subjects, I think Kris Jenner, Puppet Master, ought to take Miley on as a new client to “manage.”

  83. MeowuiRose says:

Where is her Mother!?!? Her Grandmother!?! Anyone who would explain to her this kind of behavior is rude, disrespectful, try-hard and tasteless! Her slapping and semi motor boating that woman’s butt was not sexy or cute or whatever the heck she was going for. It was cheap, try-hard and disrespectful. If a man did that on stage I think a lot of people would be up in arms. Miley grow up and learn some self respect…..I did like her outfit on the red carpet. It reminded me of something I would covet and wear…when I was 6!

  84. Adrien says:

Lady Gaga was good and entertaining but it wasn’t her best. We’ve seen that before. It was like an amalgamation of her stunts.

Katy Perry wasn’t bad but she’s kinda corny and trite.

Robin Thicke was so uncomfortable throughout his performance. I know it’s just a show but he’s a married guy (to Paula Patton, no less) with a kid. Really awkward. Miley looked like Vera De Milo trying to seduce Robin.

Best thing about the show was Bruno Mars.

  85. Hayley says:

I winced through Cyrus’ whole “performance”, which really just seemed like a mental breakdown on display. Such desperation is so pitiful it’s hard to watch, yet I couldn’t take my eyes away as if I was looking at a train wreck or something.

  86. stinky says:

omg yall are making me late to WORK!!!!!

  87. sillyone says:

I didn’t watch however my 16 year old daughter did. When Miley’s “performance” was over she comes running in “Mom, Mom, Mom, you should have seen the crap Miley Cyrus just did on the tv she was humping Robin Thicke, Mom he is married! She had her muffin and butt all over him. She was being absolutely gross, I have never seen anything like it. I think she needs a mental evaluation.” She continued to say “you can watch it tomorrow, it will be all over the internet and tv”.

I seen the video and I couldn’t watch it all.

By the way I want to add, I hope a bird comes along and craps on her tongue so she learns to keep that damn thing in her mouth.

  88. Maria says:

    its just sad to me.

i blame robin thicke more. he is way older, married and has a kid.

but he is also a known douche and might have a wandering eye. in germany he was rumoured to be all over an ex WAG and there is a pic where he is hugging a fan and you can see how he grabs her butt.
    here:
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BSl7FSECUAAHvT0.png

    • emmie_a says:

Riiight… I didn’t see Robin rubbing himself against Miley. What was he supposed to do? Push her away?

      • briargal says:

To be honest–YES! Can you imagine the reaction to him pushing her away? Probably a lot of applause and cheers! And some respect!

      • Mourning the Death of Music says:

        Exactly, emmie.
Regardless of Miley’s antics, Robin’s job was to continue to hold his own and perform his bit. HE did not perform lewd acts, grab his crotch or shove a #1 foam finger between his legs like a mock peen.
He maintained and continued to sing, as professionals do.

I do believe the huge smile of disbelief on his face said it all.

      • emmie_a says:

briargal: ha! That would’ve been awesome if Robin HAD pushed her away!!! Would serve her right.

    • OhDear says:

Re: ex-WAG – would the ex-WAG be Sylvie van der Vaart (or whatever her name is now if she’s not using van der Vaart anymore)? If so, that’s really opportunistic of him.

      • Diane says:

For anyone saying how dare miley grind on a *gasp* married man, he did not have a gun to his head. He could have backed away or not let it happen at all, especially knowing his wife was in the audience. also, he knows miley is a lot younger than he is. if his kind was right he would have stopped it before it started. yes he is a grown married man but he is not helpless. not defending miley but he is not innocent here either. miley is gross for doing that, she basically simulated anal sex onstage

      • OhDear says:

Did you even read the comment? It was asking about the person Thicke is rumored to be all over in Germany that Marie referenced.

    • blaize says:

Yeah, in a world where married actors and actresses do make-out scenes and sex scenes with other people, it seems kind of strange to worry about a pop star grinding on a married pop star on stage.

  89. OhDear says:

I thought the Miley thing was…creepy.

  90. MissNostalgia says:

Well, I am just an old-fashioned, uncool square; but I guess what passes for hip entertainment these days is “entertainers” trying to out-gross each other on stage and generally in public. I am assuming this is what the fans are clamoring for. I am amazed that Ms. Cyrus has not contracted lock-jaw yet as her tongue seems afraid to stay inside her head.

  91. LMB says:

Alas, the singing squirrel with the big tongue struck again.

    • Jessibes says:

Right! I can’t believe nobody has commented on that squirrel with its tongue out that was on her onesie.

  92. Nicolette says:

“VMA’s dominated by Miley Cyrus’ stank”…..GREAT headline!

I couldn’t make it through the entire six minute video. From the first moment she came out with that damn tongue, to the incredibly inappropriate gestures she was making, to rubbing herself with the foam finger I just kept wondering who the hell considers this garbage talent. She looks like a damn fool.

Sorry ladies I am OLD SCHOOL, a throwback to the days when MTV actually was a music station. When videos were campy, told a little story and were fun to watch. When they had “VJ’s” that would host their own segments and interview the singers/bands of the day. Like Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, and JJ Jackson. Do they even do anything like that anymore? Do they even show music anymore, or is it all just mindless reality shows sprinkled with some “videos” in the middle of the night? I remember when MTV debuted, the first video was “Video Killed The Radio Star” and it was a big deal. Now it’s Miley and her stupid tongue. Ugh!!!!! I just can’t.

  93. Asdfg says:

    I’m not surprised. 😆

I was hoping she’d do a faceplant and wake up from the fall to be the normal Miley again. Wishful thinking? 🙁 Before she even performed my jaw was dropping. Her red carpet pics are hysterically embarrassing.

Did anyone she the Smith’s reaction?

    http://www.popsugar.com/Smith-Family-React-Miley-Cyrus-VMAs-31327733

    Look at their faces!
I felt the same way! Hahahahahahahahaaa 😆

  94. aquarius64 says:

@V4Real – Paula may have been ok with the naked models in Blurred Lines, it’s another thing to have some 20-year-old twit rubbing her mitted hand over her husband’s junk during a live performance. When part of the public outcry is Miley disrespecting another man’s wife, she failed. Good thing she didn’t win any awards, she only walked away with public ridicule and scorn.

  95. ds says:

But I really like what she’s wearing in these photos here… Have, on the other hand, turned off the video at the very beginning. But can we be truthful and just admit that some of those people in the audience are as tacky – maybe they were also embarrassed of themselves while watching her. It’s too bad Miley didn’t get that, or just played with that idea. I don’t know ; I thought it was all a joke when she changed her look, and the video, but this is serious and it’s just…sad

  96. Lucy says:

Instead of giving Miley the attention she so desperately craves, I’m gonna take a moment to relive the awesomenes that were Gaga, Kanye, Macklemore JT and N’SYNC last night. Enjoyed them a lot.

  97. Katie says:

her performance was interesting, to say the least. I’m sure she’s going to release some kind of statement about it, saying it was “successful” because it accomplished what she wanted to accomplish, which was to get everyone talking.

Also, how has no one commented about Robyn Thicke’s Beetlejuice suit? As soon as he came out that was all I could think.

And, since I didn’t watch the show did Daft Punk end up performing after the hilariousness of the Colbert Show?

  98. palermo says:

If you’re going to twerk you should at least have an ass …

  99. OhMyMy says:

So what’s next for Miley? Does she and her cannot be controlled tongue just keep trying to go to next extreme?

    Was Liam there?

  100. cookie says:

    so tired of Miley.

she’s getting uglier the older she gets — with those stupid tongue antics.

what a pathetic excuse for a performer.
guess it all goes back to having no talent — so she has to do the things she does.

    turn it off, please!

  101. Jaded says:

Miley brought what’s usually a somewhat low-classy event to a new low of vulgarity and utter lack of talent. No wonder everyone looked squeamish. I watched about 5 seconds of her and felt like I had to go have a bath to get the stank off me. Ewwwwwww….just ewwwwwww.

  102. Mommak918 says:

I do wanna say, as much as I’d of loved to see a longer NSYNC performance….Chris Kilpatrick and Joey Fatone looked like they were struggling to do the dance moves and KIlpatrick even tugged on his tightly fitted ‘suit’ lol.

Those guys could not keep up! They looked a bit ridiculous trying to be sexy lol. Oy.
Now, JC Chasez, he probably could perform!

    ah, ok….
    I’m done w my JT/NSYNC vent

    *As for MILEY….
she doesn’t know how to perform.
I don’t even mind her song, and they could of had a good performance.

This would of been a great chance to show all us (haters) that she IS about the music.

    But, she isnt.

    She is dumb.
    And disgusting.
    And looked ridiculous.
    ALSO, Robin Thicke….looked thick.

Like, I’m not trying to body shame here–but uhhh women are harder on WOMEN but to me…he looked…a bit tubby in the belly.

And his stripped/refree suit was too snug.

    THAT is all. 🙂

    • lori says:

I thought the same thing. And he looked a little bloated in the jaw area too. And to me it looked like kiddie porn with her acting out for an “ol’ guy”.

    • Jayna says:

God, maybe he did. I am embarassed to say my eyes never got that far up, if you know what I mean, in those tight pants. LOL

  103. Marisa says:

I was embarrassed for her. Truly uncomfortable to watch, with the constant tongue action, crotch-grabbing, and “twerking.”
When they pan to Rihanna in the audience, her expression said it all.

  104. BooBooLaRue says:

Sadly, Miley wouldn’t even be considered a talented stripper.

  105. Green Eyes says:

I know Miley CAN sing, some of her best work is I believe the videos on youtube are backyard chronicles. There is also such a thing as artistic expression… That being said that performance was not an artistic expression but one of a young woman conflicted & trying too hard to push the boundaries to become the next Cher, Madonna, Christina, or Britany. Only problem is.. She is not. I would even say frankly she is uncomfortable in her own body that’s why she looks so much like a lil kid practicing stripper moves they saw when peeking at dads private porno stash. Her PR team & whoever is advising her should be fired for letting her think she’s succeeding at being edgy or cool. She is looking like an underage raunchy mess. She still has growing to do, as an adult artist and as a woman comfortable in her own grown body.. Because this is not edgy at all.. And comes a point when you can totally destroy your credibility as an artist, she’s crashing in that lane & if she had a good PR team & advisors they would steer her outta that lane. At this rate by 35 she will be a stripper in some town off the map going by the name Hannah using the same raunchy routine she so proudly dismayed the audience with at the 2013 VMA awards . I like Miley…but even I can’t defend this train wreck. I don’t think it’s drugs. I think it’d genuine insecurity & afraid she has to be something she’s not to be accepted as an adult, while uncomfortable & unsure of her own self.

    • Leslie says:

I agree. And I think a lot of her insecurity right now has to do with her losing Liam. It’s pretty obvious they are no longer together.

      • Hoi says:

I was thinking the same thing! It’s like acting out ’cause you don’t know a better way to express your frustration, sorrow and fear(speaking from personal experience)…

I was just watching The Last Song yesterday, and they looked so sweet together. (I want that movie romance!)

Really wondering what Liam is thinking. Or her in-laws. (the horror I’d feel when I’d be in her place)

  106. Claudia says:

Miley’s performance was akin to a crossover between a chicken and a horny, Chinese Crested dog. Demi-Moore style chicken dancing, humping everything in sight with that GODDAMN TONGUE sticking out. That tongue makes me ragey.

Epic trainwreck. JT did a great job, and I’m not even that much of a fan (wish the *NSYNC bit was longer and better lit).

  107. littlestar says:

Miley’s performance was raunchy. Kanye’s performance was friggin’ amazing – it reaffirmed to me that he is indeed an amazing performer and artist (how sad that the Kardashian hoopla has killed many peoples respect for him?). And Robin Thicke is just soooo friggin’ sexy! Like seriously, I am not a fan of his Blurred Lines music video, but damn that man looks like he knows how to F a woman (apologies for being vulgar, but he is just so sensual and naughty looking!)!!!

    • Happy21 says:

LOL, I’m pretty sure that Kanye lost a ton of respect years ago when he bitched and moaned about how he wasn’t winning MTV awards when he should and THEN the next year or two years later hijacked a young girl’s acceptance speech to tell her that she didn’t deserve to win. I lost respect for that a-hole long before he became Kanye Kardashian!

BUT I can agree that Robin Thicke is hot in a very douchey way and is probably a fabulous lover :p

  108. Onyx XV says:

Oh, man, I can’t even watch it! And I am no prude! But it’s like watching Minnie Mouse go all p0rno or something. It’s got so many levels of ick the VMAs are never going to be able to cleanse themselves of all the slime. Robin Thicke is an idiot for allowing himself to be part of this embarrassing freak show. Miley Cyrus and her disgusting tongue need to just go away. Forever.

  109. Saffie says:

Sure Miley’s performance was vulgar, desperate and degrading but it was unfortunately highly entertaining especially the audience’s reaction. It’s obvious she is in it for a reaction even if it’s disgust and even if she’s a laughingstock. Kanye’s performance was amazing..one of the best of the night.

  110. The Original Original says:

Im just hoping Casey Affleck is filming a documentary on her entry into the hip hop lifestyle….
I mean it seems that ridiculous.
I wonder if the door hit Liams ass on the way out… this cant have helped that situation

  111. TQB says:

Calling Miley a cracked-out stripper is kind of a burn on cracked-out strippers everywhere. At least those gals can dance and are actually sexy.

  112. Happy21 says:

If Miley’s performance doesn’t prompt Liam Hemsworth to dump her FINALLY I’m afraid nothing will…

    • Belle says:

      +1

If I were him, I would be issuing a release now confirming their breakup.

      • lori says:

It makes Chris’s wife look like Julie Andrews. gawd those boys have sh!t taste in women!

    • Christin says:

Liam should run. Her dad should be in hiding. And Dolly would probably like to resign as godmother by now.

  113. HK9 says:

I do believe that after that “performance” Ms. Cyrus has earned her Phd in ratchet.

  114. Shy says:

Did you guys see when Miley stuck her face in that black woman’s gigantic ass. I was so embarrassed for her. I wonder what Liam is thinking.

    • EscapedConvent says:

The woman in the stripey tights confused me even more than the rest of it. What was she doing? Was it on purpose?

I think I would be just as embarrassed today if I were her as if I were Miley.

  115. HappyMom says:

Yes-it was raunchy and gross. But what was most embarrassing was how horrible she sounded!

  116. apsutter says:

JT is an absolute douchebag but he completely stole the show. Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that they gave him the video vanguard award when his videos have always been boring and bland as hell? The only memorable ones were the one where he threw Britney under the bus and the one whining about Elisha Cuthbert. And I felt really bad for N’Sync…poor guys.

I can’t hate Miley because as ridiculous as that performance was she was clearly having a ton of fun. She’s 20 years old, loaded with killer body, and she just wants to party and have a great time and I don’t see the problem in that. She’s out living her life the way that she wants to and I’d suggest we all do the same.

  117. Eleonor says:

After reading a lot of comments I think we can all sum this up like “it was the most embarassing performance since Britney’s 2005 Gimme more”. But Britney was out of mind, what’s your justification Miley?

  118. Vl says:

    Everyone is talking about Miley.
    Miley wins.

  119. snark says:

Put that tongue away ya twerkbag!!

  120. LaurieH says:

Miley’s post-performance comments were that it’s just puberty and this is her “movement”. First of all, bitch is 20 year old. Unless she just got her period and sprouted pubic hair, puberty came and went years ago. Secondly, what “movement” is she talking about? Some hair-brained movement to turn young women into truck-stop stripper bar sluts?

    • blaize says:

You know, there’s a great book on this subject coming out next year. It’s by an author named Kate Harding. I hope you read it 🙂

      • LaurieH says:

There is a fine line between embracing one’s sexuality, expressing one’s sexuality and gratuitous vulgarity. In Miley’s case, in her desperation to shed her child-star image (shich is understandable enough), she decided to swing the pendulum in the opposite direction (clearly, nuance is not her thing). Unfortunately, Miley in her immaturity, is confusing sexuality and sexiness with sex. Twerking and grinding and sticking out her lizard tongue are not expressions of sexuality. They are shallow, vulgar displays by a little girl who has recently found desperately desired acceptance and approval by reducing herself into a spectacle of sexually gratifying orifices. It’s not art. It’s not feminism. It’s crap.

      • blaize says:

I totally agree that her performance sucked and was completely lacking in the art and entertainment department. I didn’t say anything about ‘owning her sexuality’.

However, it’s still not a justification for slut-shaming; I wouldn’t care if we were talking about a woman who has had sex with 50 people and is walking through NYC topless and in nothing but pair daisy dukes. There is no such thing as a justification for slut-shaming, just like there is no such thing as a justification for homophobia or any other systematic bigotry.

  121. d says:

I feel so sorry for her as a human being and as young woman. Maybe as a performer, sure, she’s got lots of attention, but man, it’s just painful seeing this. Sad, very sad.

  122. yoyo says:

Someone’s been working on their car-dio! llol:
Major props to JT. THAT was impressive, he put on a proper show there . He’s in Beyonce pro territory there. That was high quality especially for VMA that has become so irrelevant over the last few years just like MTV.

Miley…sigh, I read the reviews before I saw the performance, I was expecting much worse obsenity wise. It was just soooo sad, she was trying so hard and failing so hard. It was like watching an 18 month old trying to dance like one of those video hoochies without the cuteness factor but with a tragic factor. Think new tongue sticking out thing is beyond stupid. She’s like the female Bieber at this point. Sigh

Wished you’d link to the pictures of the Smith family reacting to her non sense it’s just priceless. To wit:

    http://l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/ok4KGrb8.Y2_L5B4iPKeMA–/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9ZmlsbDtoPTM1NDtweW9mZj0wO3E9ODU7c209MTt3PTYzMA–/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/music/2013-08-25/58712c74-cf15-4e8b-a64c-7c4a3afb8db8_tumblr_ms4a16ZNmJ1r27kz7o3_1280.jpg

  123. Harlow says:

    I give Miley’s performance a 2 foam thumbs down!!!!!

  124. Susan says:

Congrats to Miley for finally unlocking the elusive level 100 Scene Queen! I thought she’d sprain her tongue for sure before such an epic fame whore achievement!

  125. blaize says:

You know, I actually expected Miley’s performance to be good, but it wasn’t. It completely sucked. The singing wasn’t good, the dancing wasn’t good, the costumes were nothing special. I’m all for pop stars getting wild on stage, but her performance was neither sexy nor entertaining.

The only positive things I can say about it is that it made me laugh at one part, and she looked like she was having fun while she was performing. But there was nothing even artistically pleasing about it. That said, I don’t think a lousy performance like that means there’s anything wrong with her as a person, and I can criticize without resorting to bigotry. It’s a skill we should all learn 🙂

  126. Bijlee says:

I heard her new song and its better than this crap. It starts out really nice but then gets just empty. Shes technically a good singer, but she has no soul to her voice. And that’s what miley cyrus and practically all her music feels like. Empty. She comes off that way too, just empty. No substance, just shock and awe. She has nothing of consequence to say. She’s just bland, boring, incredibly superficial, and easily buys into whatever her manager or PR team sells her. Because it makes the big bucks.

Anyways her performance was truly boring. There’s a picture though on Lainey’s website and miley looks so cute in it. I mean she looks like a toddler in it.

    http://photos.laineygossip.com/articles/miley-duana-26aug13-46.jpg

I was waiting for Nsync and I’m so sad that JC didn’t get to do more like he so obviously wanted. I wanted to see just got paid or pop!

  127. Ruyana says:

Miley – lewd, crude and socially unacceptable.

  128. Vampi says:

Miley- Sit. Down…. I watched it on the east coast then again on the west coast feed. I love a goood trainwreck….and I had to be sure I seented what I seed! Ahhhhh: All out of eyebleach now though…and that shizz is expensive. You owe me double eyebleach Moll..er..Miley.
I loved JT too, but was confused by him winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award. They named it after him for a reason! Thriller frecrissakes! Smooth Criminal, etc… MTV was better back then..ugh..I’m too old for this mess..lol!
OH! And marry me Bruno!! YUM!

  129. Jayna says:

Did anyone but me think Robin Thicke looked hot in his wild suit? I loved those tight pants and just the over-the-top awesomeness of it on him for a music VMA show. I think he does have a big D… lol

  130. Ginger says:

Miley sweetie I will say it again…put your lizard tongue away and for heavens sake STOP grabbing your crotch! This was overplayed and made me roll my eyes decades ago! It is neither shocking or original.

  131. aquarius64 says:

The blowback on this mess still continues. Robin, Miley and their teams are putting on a brave face and trying to sell this as a great performance. But if Paula Patton had to put out a damage control statement saying she was ok with this, all parties involved know this went down wrong. This reminds me of Janet Jackson’s/Justin Timberlake Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunction, and the Kanye West interruption at the VMAs years ago. Those incidents drew public ire for months. When your colleagues in Hollywood are ripping you on Twitter it’s bad. Selena Gomez is the only other person that has publicly defended this; but she’s a hypocrite because she was caught on camera looking aghast along with Taylor Swift, the Smiths and others. She and Swifty were whispering to each other during that hot mess, no doubt they were cutting Miley down.

Miley’s in the same boat as Kristen Stewart when she was first caught Mini-Coopering. Miley is not going to be able to live this down for a long time.

    • Jayna says:

What is sad is no one is talking about Robin, and this is the biggest single he has ever had and the best high-profile he has ever been.It should have been his night. He looked so hot in that suit. And all anyone is talking about is Miley in that performance.

    • Bijlee says:

Well it’s not that dramatic. People will stop talking about to soon hopefully because that’s the last thing she wants.

One thing Is clear is that this girl is hungry for the attention and so is thicke. They are desperate for sales! Only difference is that he’s a well established artist and she’s a manufactured pop star. If we just ignore beetlejuice and the spawn of chucky, they probably will eventually stop.

      Also lol
      http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/miley-cyrus-looks-exactly-like-angelicas-doll-cynthia-from-t?s=mobile

  132. Jayna says:

What did everyone think of Gaga keeping on her thong where her whole ass was showing and wearing it the rest of the night in the audience, standing up talking to people LOL

  133. Stacey says:

She really needs to brush her tongue if she is going to stick it out all the time. She always has a nasty white film on her tongue. Yuck, basic hygiene girl.

    • Cirque28 says:

Hopefully she just need a good tongue scraper, but if not, something is wrong. At her age, she should have a healthy pink tongue.

      • Alexandria says:

…Unless she is on a very low carbohydrate diet and her body is in ketosis (fat burning, muscle sparing). If she’s in ketosis, one of the main symptoms is a white, thickly coated tongue.

  134. bmom says:

I love Miley. Not her tongue. She is as cute as a button. And committed to her craft. Love her! hee hee

  135. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

My mom just got home from her first day of college (yay!) and she watched Miley’s antics…the first words out of her mouth were “what’s wrong with her tongue?” and the last thing she said–as Miley was twerking all up in Robin Thicke’s junk–was “oh shit!”

Gotta love my mama…she knows what’s up!

  136. Marybel says:

Miley Trainwreck cannot sing! She’s a total monotone. Last night was her jump the shark moment. Now, farewell, idiot.

  137. Jane says:

She was and is a total disgrace. She must have been high on something. Way too self-indulgent and disgusting.

  138. lisa says:

with those hair horns and buck teeth, she looks like some odd forest creature in an anime cartoon

  139. Vanessa says:

I don’t understand why Miley think she needs to these kinds antics to sell records or to get people to see her as a adult all Miley did last night was make herself look trashly and desperate for attention. Embrassed herself in front of peers did anyone see Rihanna react or one direction Zayn was laughing at her the only one who stood up for her was Selena Gomez.

  140. Dommy Dearest says:

I’m not sure if it’s just me but I would feel completely disrespected if I was Liam or any of that family. Grinding herself on Robin Thicke’s beetlejuice man bits was an insult to her ‘relationship’ with Liam.

I didn’t watch the show, had more important things such as Dexter to watch. I think it’s ridiculous that MTV even hosts the music video awards when they play no music at all. I’m pretty much over all the people at that awards show. And it’s quite easy to hate Kanye. He is a douche major. And him showing up on PMK show just shows he’s apart of the brainless organization that is celebrity.

    • mrsmc says:

You are not the only one, the same thought ran through my mind. Also I am beginning to believe that Liam’s family tried to get him to break off the engagement with her. Her parents needs to sit her down and have a REAL talk with her, she is still their daughter no matter what age she is. I felt embarrassed for her.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

I fully believe they did try that route. I think that’s why Liam is barely seen and Miley drops the relationship at every twist and turn. I’m not sure if it’s all parenting, honestly. Yes, a lot of what our parents teaches us stays but at the end of the day we make our decisions. I think Miley has gotten obsessed with the attention she’s been receiving and so she’s doing whatever she feels like she can in order to maintain it. She can fully say ‘No, I don’t like the direction I’m being managed in or with’. I’m betting she knows how trashy she’s coming across and that her audience as far as adults are concerned are negative. But the younger generation is what feeds the ego of Miley, Justin and the like.

I don’t know, that’s my theory on it. My mom raised me to have morals and be respectful of myself but from the age of 16-18 I was a little rebel and had my fun even though I know it wasn’t what I was taught. But she’s like what, 21? I’m not sure her excuse but I’m with you that her parents need to sit her down and remind her of how to act and how to act like a lady.

  141. It’s just a shame to see the spotlight shift to someone like Miley when there are legitimate artists who have class out there being overshadowed by this garbage.

  142. Ming says:

I felt more embarrassed for Liam than I did for miley. Poor guy.

  143. princesslizabeth says:

Arrrgh! Miley and the tongue. She is so annoying!!

  144. Michele says:

    Dear Miley,

Thank you for proving every bad thing I say about you on this excellent website.

  145. iseepinkelefants says:

After watching the performance I can’t hate on it too much. Maybe because I went in there with everyone’s comments I was expecting the worse, but her performance was like her video, some dumb 20-something acting like a drunk idiot with her friends.

As for her Robin Thicke performance, she was just replicating the girls in his video. She couldn’t walk out there nude so she went with the oh so shocking flesh tone outfit.her grinding on him seemed to go with the theme of the song. How many dumb drunk girls haven’t you seeing trying to twerk to that song at the club? It was pretty stupid to have a duet with her but MTV probably didn’t have enough time to showcase all of the top 40 so someone (not very bright) probably thought it would be edgy to put little Miley Cyrus mixed into a song about consensual rape. Blame them. Any youngn, dumb 20 something with something to prove and way too many hormones is going to go with it. What better way to prove she’s no longer a little girl and is a “mature” sexual object?

I won’t completely shade Miley for acting her age.

    • Michele says:

Following this logic would not explain then why many, many other female singers of her age group through all the decades of televised music, managed to perform their music with their clothes on without simulating sex. Many of them were “20 year olds with something to prove too.” Real talent is being side stepped to showcase this trash, this is not misguided talent nor is it normal.

      • blaize says:

Wait, you mean it’s not normal for young pop stars to wear unflattering/revealing costumes and engage in ‘forbidden’ dance moves/gestures?

I’m pretty sure Madonna, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga all did exactly that. The only difference is that they’re all more talented. (Although I don’t really think Madonna sings better than Miley. If so, not by much).

      • Michele says:

        @Blaize

I find it hilarious that you think anything at all that Miley did is remotely similar to Madonna, Pink, Christina Aguilera, or Beyoncé. They did not act like trash on stage. Catch up with the VMAs and the MTV music awards of the past. Miley is not even in the same universe as those stars.

      • blaize says:

Riight… I don’t remember any of those women ever getting on stage in lingerie… or grabbing their crotches…or grinding…. or shaking their butts…

I’ve followed some of those girls (Christina, Pink, Beyoncé a little bit) since I was a kid and I’ve seen a lot of their performances. They’re more talented both vocally and creatively, but yes, they still have done what she did.

      • Michele says:

@blaize Not even close, she’s totally dirty and Lohanland bound. None of those other women bent over and let a man dry hump them on stage or simulated fingering themselves at 18 on stage…But you keep thinking that she’s similar. 😉

I DO like that black & jeweled outfit Miley has on in the pics. Terrible performance. Couldn’t even sing! Especially for Robin Thicke’s song.

Sad N’Sync didn’t have more… or the other guy’s mice were turned up as much as Justin’s.

Boos were definitely part of Gaga’s performance. What high art.

Katy Perry’s performance was boring – in a boxing ring. Is it really her biggest hit ever?!

  147. Cirque28 says:

Interesting article on Miley’s appropriation of black culture within this particular performance:

    • A says:

      This is not my culture.
This is not “black culture”. This is like saying metal or goth is “white culture”.
If we must go there then shoot, rock n roll is black culture, blues, soul, rythm and soul, jazz etc is black culture.
Hiphop is not black culture period. It’s a genre of music that has been dominated by black thugs – yes, I said it. Dominated by black thugs.
Ex cons. Jay Z used to sell drugs and dare I say most rappers are former criminals, heck some are still engaged in criminal activity.
I hate that this has been associated and become black African American “culture”.
The underclass has taken over what’s black or not. What’s African American or not.
It’s like saying “white trash” represents you and is your white culture.
      It’s sad really.
And of course liberals will shout you down and pat you on the head and say “No no no, you are wrong this IS your culture” because ya know, they know more about you and your culture than you do. Sigh.

      • Bijlee says:

I don’t think that’s what the criticism is about. She’s appropriating in a way that perpetuates stereotypes, harmful negative ones that you seem to dislike. Yes, unfortunately hip hop is dominated by thugs because that’s what is popular amongst the crowd that miley cyrus is a part of. Priveleged white suburban kids who only wanna listen to gangsta crap. There are so many other artists out there that don’t use disgusting words and make beautiful music and don’t get the recognition they deserve because its just not gonna make money amongst that demographic that buys that gangsta crap. That demographic has the most money and time to spend on these things so of course you would target them.

Hip hop came from black culture. It’s taken on new meaning but it did come from black culture. There’s a another side to the appropriating debate. Shes being racist and encouraging negative stereotypes. And thats why its a problem. I’m not black, im brown but people appropriate my culture all the time and perpetuate negative stereotypes because that’s all they see. That’s the big problem here.

      • Cirque28 says:

@A: True, I could have said hip hop culture and been more accurate.

It’s a good article, though, and there have been several along these lines: saying that Miley is putting on hip hop culture like a costume (which she will just as readily take off) and using her back-up dancers as accessories and “props for a white woman’s narrative.”

        Here’s another one: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kia-makarechi/miley-cyrus-race-vmas_b_3817286.html

And he’s the cutest too. So handsome. He was always the most talented singer and dancer and super cute to boot.

    • Mourning the Death of Music says:

Notice how turned down his mic was (as were the rest) when they performed? His little ad-lib sing-song at the end was meant for a reason, to show the world he’s still got it.

  149. lc says:

I don’t believe it’s just Miley to blame. There was a particular moment when Robin Thicke positioned himself right behind her as she was sticking her butt in the air. I’m sure it was deliberate as he had plenty of room on stage to do something else or just turn sideways, so that it didn’t look like they were rubbing together. He shouldn’t be coming out squeaky clean from that mess. They probably even rehearsed the whole thing and dirty old man Thicke didn’t see anything wrong with it.

  150. Rudy says:

Miley looked completel unrehearsed and unprepared. Did you notice when she smiled brightly at the other dancers they just glanced back. NO one looked rehearsed. The costumes were awful. It seemed like her first number was just slapped together at the last minute.

Her Blurred Lines part looked improvised by a drugged out narcissistic kid.

And the tongue? WTF? Someone must have told Miley she’d get a $100 every time she stuck out her tongue. How can she ;possibly think this is attractive or even sexy?

No one is looking out for this girl and she is spilling all over the place.

    • Leslie says:

And her tongue doesn’t look healthy. The tongue of a healthy person is pinkish in color. Her’s looks sort of gray which can indicate stomach or intestinal problems. Or maybe she ate some black licorice.

  151. Bitca says:

What an epiphany. Have avoided MTV even from the time it played music vids 24/7, & am not at all familiar with post-2000 pop singers, so thanks for all the clips.

I might really like Gaga without the Art & backup dancers. She has a genuine vocal & musical talent, tho I still loathe the Las-Vegas-style presentations now considered de rigeur among most pop stars: see how powerful Kanye’s performance is, w/just a basic scrim evoking the Holiday song, & NO flashy lights & gyrating dancers? So what if he’s his own worst enemy re PR?

‘Ye is now a much more exciting hip-hop artist than Jay-Z. Funny that the only thing he self-deprecates is his singing, ’cause he does a nice job in ‘Blood on the Leaves’ (whoa; while sampling Billie Holiday’s ‘Strange Fruit’? That seriously raises the bar!). Also, aside from an over-produced clunker or two, love *Yeezus*. For anyone who appreciates rap/hip-hop, Kanye may be among the only ones here–w/Gaga?) whose tracks are not destined to be ephemeral.

Anyhoo, this elderly punkette from the 80s is grateful for the analysis, clips, & comments.

PS: Could not care less about Miley, except a) be nice to know how to pronounce her name, & b) imo, she seems an OK kid–who may have some charisma for AM radio, but appears bereft of any managerial guidance whatsoever. Can’t see how she’s any more untalented than Brit-Brit; there’s just a sense Miley lacks any sense of direction right now.

  152. monkeypants says:

Wow…that was so incredibly depressing. I’m an olds, but to go from The Kinks etc. to pop/punk/Duran Duran and the real musicians of the early 80s to Blur/Britpop of the 90’s to…thismess – uggghh.

I wonder what the oldschool record guys like Clive Davis etc think of this. Entirely repellant. Is there something redeeming, that I’m missing?
